Comeback Kids strike again!
(AP) – Despite dealing with extreme foul trouble for the entire game the South Dakota State Jacks took a different approach. Instead of trying to over power the much taller and bigger Thunderbirds they took a large number of shots from the outside, 27 to be exact. Today it paid off when Vandrell Smith hit a wide open 3 while the team was down 1 with less than 30 seconds to go. The Thunderbirds put up a three for the win which missed and despite getting the rebound were unable to hit from the wing. Game to the Jacks!
Coaches Corner: I always look for the open shot, it just so happens that when your down by one the other team expects you to drive to the hoop. The last few games they leave our best shooters alone outside and well the plan is to kick them the ball. Today it paid off as we won by the skin of our teeth, but I would prefer leading some games at half time every now and then.
Next Game: @ 12-12 UMKC whom the Jacks beat 88-80 in their last meeting.

Re: CH2k8-- The coaching Legacy of Dan Baker
Jacks take season series from Roos, 1 game away from .500
(AP) – Today the Jacks took a play out of the Southern Utah playbook. Instead of allowing their bigs to be put into foul trouble earlier the Jacks attacked the bigs of the Kangaroo team, starting center Sead Boyce was only on the court for a total of 13 minutes. The Jacks also got big games from Vandrell Smith who had 24 points, Troy Kinloch who had 15 points and was 4-4 from 3pt land.
Coaches Corner: We came out so hot I had to check the settings, we didn’t miss any of our first 10 shots, and 4 of those were from 3 point land. We should have won by much more but gave away a decent number of opportunities at the free throw line. Now that we are one game away from .500 I am getting the feeling that if we can stay hot we might have a shot at the conference tournament.
Next Game: vs 9-14 ND ST who beat the Jacks 86-82 in the previous meeting.

Re: CH2k8-- The coaching Legacy of Dan Baker
Jacks have another buzzer beater waved off?!
(AP) – Somehow the Jacks blew a 12 point halftime lead to the rival Bison in the most attended game in the history of coach Baker. Not only that but it appears the refs of the Summit conference are against the Jacks. For the 2nd time this season a buzzer beater from Vandrell Smith was waved off! On an even more somber note Forward Odie WInans basically ended his season today unless the Jacks make it to the 2nd weekend of the NCAA tournament with a broken ankle. It is expected that sophomore Julio Perry will be upgraded from the reserves list as his redshirt has already been used.
Coaches Corner: Wow, one bad call in a season is one thing, but twice? This is getting ridiculous. Either way it shouldn’t have been that close of a game with a 12 point lead at the half. Now we are aiming to finish the regular season at .500 and close out the final two games with wins. Losing Odie really hurts, you could tell when he went down our second line wasn’t the same; that is when they made their big run in the 2nd half. This should make things interesting.

Re: CH2k8-- The coaching Legacy of Dan Baker
Jacks blow right by Golden Eagles!
(AP) – The Jacks heard what coach Baker said about coming out and handling a game from the get go, they did just that. The Jacks took the lead and with some help of Louis Sheppard who scored a career high at 20 points and was 8-10 from the field, 4-5 from 3pt range. The 2nd half was a more or less slow half as the Golden Eagles did their best to come back but the Jacks continued to hold onto the lead.
Coaches Corner: That game was a fun one to watch. We had the lead and never lost it, Sheppard had a huge game and with the end of his career around the corner it is the kind of game he deserved. He was lights out, didn’t miss until the last 2 minutes of the game when we were just stalling the game clock until about 2 seconds on the shot clock. One more game in the regular season and then we get to see the conference tournament layout.
Next Game: vs 8-21 UL-Calcutta whom the Jacks lost to 111-108 for senior night and the final game of the regular season. The Jacks are going for .500 with a win.

Re: CH2k8-- The coaching Legacy of Dan Baker
Jacks rock Calcutta (Not India)!
(AP) – In a game in which the Jacks just seemed to bide their time the Jacks came out victorious. In the first half it was apparent the lack of Odie Winans really hurt the Jacks on the second line. The Jacks went into the locker room down by 7. In the locker room coach Baker reportedly threw some water bottles around to stir things up. Whatever he did it worked, the Jacks outscored the UL-Calcutta team 51-24 in the second half with only Jari Zuzak scoring over 15 points in the game.
Coaches Corner: I went in there and told the guys that they should believe in themselves. I might have gotten a bit heated with the team and called out a few guys but it worked didn’t it? Giving up 46 in the first half and only 24 in the second shows that when we play our defense the way we can we can stop just about anyone from scoring. Overall the 3 ball was huge for us, we were getting open looks because of their 2-3 zone and I told the guys to keep shooting. 34 of the 75 shots were 3s and 13 of the 32 field goals were also 3s.

February Wrap Show!
Erin Andrews (EA): Welcome back to our final wrap show of the regular season. We have had some exciting basketball this year and we are sure there is more to come in the conference tournaments. With that here is a look at the top 25 to finish the regular season.
NCAA Hoops Rankings - AP Top 25 - Updated: Mar 1, 2008 RK TEAM (VOTES) RECORD 1 Kansas 24-3 2 North Carolina 22-7 3 Marquette 23-5 4 Clemson 22-4 5 Michigan State 23-5 6 Memphis 24-5 7 Georgia 21-4 8 UCLA 23-5 9 Rhode Island 27-4 10 Tennessee 20-8 11 Louisville 21-9 12 Georgia Tech 18-9 13 Oregon 21-7 14 Georgetown 20-8 15 Pittsburgh 21-7 16 Baylor 21-6 17 Duke 19-8 18 Arkansas 21-7 19 Virginia 21-6 20 California 21-6 21 Auburn 19-7 22 Saint Joseph's 20-7 23 Penn State 21-6 24 Alabama 20-9 25 Kentucky 19-10
Dick Vitale (DV): THAT’S AWESOME BABY WITH A CAPITAL”A”! THE MOST UNDERRATED TEAM ON THAT LIST HAS GOT TO BE THE DUKE BLUE DEVILS, NO QUESTION ABOUT IT! THE MOST OVERRATED TEAM IS WITHOUT ANY QUESTION RHODE ISLAND WHO HAS SUFFERED NOT ONE, NOT TWO, BUT THREE EMBARRASSING LOSSES TO TEAMS THAT ARE UNDER .500!
EA: With that said here is a look at how some of the Mid Majors are looking heading into conference play.
NCAA Hoops Rankings - AP Top 25 - Updated: Mar 1, 2008 RK TEAM (VOTES) RECORD 1 George Mason 21-7 2 New Orleans 24-3 3 Tennessee State 23-5 4 Old Dominion 21-9 5 Columbia 21-5 6 Davidson 20-6 7 Western Kentucky 20-7 8 UT-Arlington 20-4 9 Rider 22-5 10 Gonzaga 17-12 11 UNC Greensboro 21-7 12 Western Michigan 19-7 13 Santa Clara 20-6 14 UC Irvine 18-7 15 Tennessee Tech 20-7 16 Lafayette 21-8 17 Butler 20-9 18 UC Santa Barbara 18-8 19 Yale 15-9 20 Kent State 19-9 21 Montana 20-6 22 Missouri State 16-13 23 Townson 17-11 24 Fresno State 18-8 25 Austin Peay 19-11
DV: SOMETHING THAT SHOCKS ME AND I’M SURE MOST EVERYONE WATCHING IS THAT GONZAGA IS 17-12 AND ONLY 8-5 IN CONFERENCE. THE GOOD THING FOR GONZAGA IS THAT OF THOSE 12 LOSSES 8 OF THEM COME AGAINST TEAMS THAT ARE RANKED OR WERE RANKED DURING THE SEASON. ANOTHER TEAM THAT STANDS OUT IS DAVIDSON, THEY HAVE PLAYED A LOT OF RANKED OPPONENTS AND HAVE PLAYED THEM TOUGH, LOOK FOR THEIR SHOOTER STEPHEN CURRY TO BECOME A DARLING OF THIS TOURNAMENT!
EA: Thanks Dick, now for the segment that I have been looking forward too, I will have a brief chat with South Dakota State coach Dan Baker, the Jacks finished the season at exactly .500 in conference and non-league play which is quite a feat for a 1st year coach. Here is a quick breakdown of the Summit League Conference.
Summit League Conference Standings - Updated: Mar 1, 2008 TEAM REC PCT CONF GB IUPUI 16-11 .592 12-6 IPFW 15-12 .555 10-8 North Dakota State 11-15 .423 10-8 Oakland 13-13 .500 10-8 Western Illinois 14-12 .538 9-9 Missouri-Kansas City 14-15 .482 9-9 South Dakota State 14-14 .500 9-9 Oral Roberts 14-13 .518 8-10 S. EA: Well coach it’s nice to see you again, how do you feel about your first regular season coaching basketball?
Coach Dan Baker (DB): It’s good to see you too Erin, we should have more visits, maybe you can come work for me again? Anyways, I feel great about our season, ya we had some losses that we shouldn’t have had, but that happens all of the time.
EA: (Blushing) How do you feel about the team going into the conference tournament?
DB: I feel confident, I haven’t seen the seedings yet and am not sure how they are going to place those of us with the 9-9 record in the conference. All I know is when we play our best we can beat anyone in this conference, we have beaten the conference leader both times we played them and beat the #2 team in the conference once as well.
EA: Rumor is you will have another look at Oakland here soon, what are your thoughts on that seeing as the team has beaten you twice this year?
DB: Well, if that is who we play we will have to take care not to get into early foul trouble and we will have to play some tight defense. It is tough to beat a team 3 times in a season so we have that going for us. If that is the case though look for a hard fought game as both teams are trying to get above .500 on the season as well as fight for their lives in the season.
EA: Well it has been great talking with you, hopefully we will do this again after conference tournament play.

Here is a look into the Road to the Final Four!
Today we preview the Summit Conference Tournament
It appears that not all teams get a shot in the conference tournament in the Summit, looks as though only the top 8 get to play. That means Southern Utah and UL-Calcutta get the perverbial shaft and are done for the year.
#1 IUPUI 16-11 (12-6)
66.5 PPG
Biggest Threat: Taliek Werner, Junior, Shooting Guard, 16.4 PPG
Big Man On Campus: Philip Sylla, Junior, Power Forward, 6.9 RPG
