Kevin Durant, Thunder stay hot against Hornets

OKLAHOMA CITY -- The Oklahoma City Thunder have finished a stretch of beating up on the NBA's weaker teams.

Kevin Durant scored 26 points to lead the Thunder to their 11th win in 12 games, 78-69 over the New Orleans Hornets on Sunday night.

The victory improved the Thunder to 13-5, the best record in the West.

Russell Westbrook added 24 points and 6 assists to OKC effort. Thunder coach Scott Brooks said Westbrook improved as the game went on. He was 3-for-4 in the fourth quarter.

He will have to continue to step up his game as the Thunder lost sixth-man James Harden to a lower back strain. Harden is expected to miss 2-4 weeks.

Lazar Hayward filled in for Harden and scored 8 points. Serge Ibaka had a great game on defense blocking 5 shots and grabbing 9 rebounds.

Oklahoma City led throughout, including by as many as 14 in the first half. The Hornets pulled to 62-65 with 9:07 left in the game, but Westbrook hit back-to-back shots and the Hornets never got closer than four the rest of the way.

Eric Gordon scored 22 points to lead New Orleans, no other Hornet managed to reach double-figures.

The Thunder will have a day off before starting a stretch of 4 games in 5 days. Three of the games are away from the Chesapeake Energy Arena, against Indiana, Toronto and Houston. The lone home game will come against the Sacramento Kings.

Russell Westbrook shines in Oklahoma City's win

INDIANAPOLIS -- Kevin Durant watched Russell Westbrook carry the Oklahoma City Thunder for most of the game, then took over at the end.

Westbrook scored 27 points, Durant had 11 of his 26 in the final quarter as the Thunder pulled away to win 77-65.

"We were rewarded for our hard work and perseverance," Durant said. "It was a good win for us tonight. Tonight was one of those games where had to grind it out."

"I think the guys did a great job hanging in there," Thunder coach Scott Brooks said. "You like to hear words like tough and scrappy. Our team is improving in those daily."

Durant also had a steal, three assists and nine rebounds, and Brooks said his defense was as critical late as his offense.

I don't look at his shooting," Brooks said. "I see what he's doing all around. Kevin Durant wants to be a special player, and special players have to be two-way players."

Indiana was led by Danny Granger with 18 points, Roy Hibbert had 11, Darren Collison scored 10 but couldn't handle Westbrook on the other end.

"Russell Westbrook was very good tonight," Pacers coach Frank Vogel said. "We tried different matchups. He was just too much. We didn't have what it takes to stop him. He's quickly becoming one of the better guards in the league. He's so fast and explosive."

The Thunder face a quick turnaround as they play the Raptors tomorrow night in Toronto. OKC took the first meeting 100-91 at Chesapeake Energy Arena.

Thunder stay hot after beating Toronto for 8th straight win

TORONTO -- Kevin Durant and the Oklahoma City Thunder made quick work of the Toronto Raptors.

Durant scored 23 of his 33 points in the first half to lead the Thunder to their eight straight win, 98-75 over the Raptors.

"He's turned into a bona fide superstar in this league," Raptors coach Dwayne Casey said. "He finds ways to score. He's active. You take one thing away from him, he goes to another."

Kendrick Perkins added 13 points, and Russell Westbrook had 22 points and 6 assists for the Thunder, first in the Western Conference at 15-5.

Leandro Barbosa led Toronto with 15 points and Andrea Bargnani had 10.

"We didn't respond. We didn't impose our will," Bargnani said. "We didn't resist them at all, and you can't do that, because this team is going to play hard and they're going to play their basketball."

Durant scored 23 points in the first half to take a 60-39 lead. Oklahoma City stretched the advantage to 24 in the second half on an Eric Maynor 3-pointer.

The fans at Air Canada Centre stood and booed as the game ended.

Oklahoma City will make a quick trip home to face the Sacramento Kings then face the Houston Rockets on the road the following night.

Westbrook ignites Thunder comeback before leaving with injury

OKLAHOMA CITY -- The Sacramento largest lead of the game was 19 points, they were ahead 37-25 after one quarter and led 59-53 at the half.

Then Russell Westbrook took the game over, scoring 17 points in the third quarter. It was Westbrook's steal and break-away dunk plus the foul that gave the Thunder their first lead of the game at 72-71.

Oklahoma City wouldn't trail again as they held off the feisty Kings 97-88 for their ninth straight win.

Unfortunately, Westbrook wasn't around to see the finish. After driving hard for a lay-up with a little over three minutes left in the third quarter, he hit the floor hard and separated his left shoulder. He is expected to miss the next one to two weeks.

Kevin Durant picked up the slack down the stretch on his way to game high 32 points.

Sacramento was led by J.J. Hickson who had 21 points, 8 rebounds and 4 blocks. Marcus Thornton added 17 points and Tyreke Evans had 15.

"Lapses of concentration and judgment, that's probably our biggest problem," said Kings coach Paul Westphal.

The Thunder will be without Westbrook for the first time since he was drafted as they travel to Houston to face the Rockets tomorrow night. One piece of good news for OKC is that James Harden is expected to make his return to the line-up after being out with a back strain.

Durant's 1st career triple-double lifts OKC to 10th straight win

OKLAHOMA CITY -- With Russell Westbrook sidelined Kevin Durant took on the play making duties for the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Durant dished out 12 assists, grabbed 12 rebounds and scored 32 points for his first career triple-double.

Oklahoma City needed his all-around effort as the Houston Rockets gave the Thunder a run for their money before fading late as OKC won the game 95-85.

Kevin Martin scored 21 points in the first half as the Rockets took a 57-53 lead into the locker. However, the Thunder turned up the defense in the second half holding Martin to just 4 second half points.

The Thunder's bench played a key role in the victory as James Harden scored 13 points in his first game back from a back injury and Nick Collison added 10.

Eric Maynor filled in for Westbrook in the starting line-up and had a decent game with 6 points, 4 rebounds, and 7 assists.

Serge Ibaka had his second straight game with double-figure rebounds grabbing 10 to go with his 9 points.

The Thunder will have a day off as they return home for 4 straight games, starting with a visit from the struggling Detroit Pistons. Oklahoma City will be looking to extend their win streak to 11 games.

Thunder run win streak to 11 as Durant notches 2nd straight triple-double

OKLAHOMA CITY -- For the second straight game Kevin Durant tallied a triple-double as the Thunder made it 11 straight wins.

Durant filled up the box score with 29 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists as the Thunder beat the Detroit Pistons 89-72.

The Pistons got off to hot start thanks to Tayshaun Prince, who scored 17 of the teams 24 first quarter points. Unfortunately, he only scored 7 points the rest of the game.

Nick Collison had his best game of the season with 14 points and 8 rebounds off the OKC bench. Thabo Sefolosha was the only other Thunder player in double figures with 11 points.

"We did a good job defensively," Collison said. "I think we did good job of coming out and making our presence known defensively."

Oklahoma City will continue their home-stand against the Orlando Magic and Dwight Howard who leads the league in rebounding.
