William & Mary Tribe at North Florida Ospreys Dec 7, 2007 1ST 2ND SCORE William & Mary (1-4) 27 23 50 North Florida (1-3) 30 43 73
Jacksonville, FL. --- Where did that come from?
It's no surprise that the Ospreys of North Florida can be dangerous, but this performance was almost scary.
North Florida walloped the Tribe of William and Mary 70-53 in its first home action of the year at UNF Arena.
North Florida outscored William and Mary 43-23 in the second half. It was a close first half but the Ospreys came out firing on all cylinders in the second. Most of that was the interior game with Justin Cecil and James Grimball dominating the paint.
"The reason why we won truly was the rebounding, I think we out-rebounded them 2-1. James (Grimball) and Justin (Cecil) we excellent again on the boards," said Coach Shell.
And coach was not wrong, the Ospreys out-rebounded the Tribe 42-21. Freshman forward Justin Cecil is quickly becoming the star, there is no lie in that statement as he went 8-13 from the floor for 20 points in only 16 minutes.
Coach Shell on his team tonight, "you know after that double overtime win against Savannah State I think some of our guys were still on the high and we showed it tonight. Justin (Cecil) is becoming the leader of this team and for me to say that about a freshman, that's something in itself there."
Sophomore Stan Januska grabbed 6 rebounds and scored 10 points in his best game of the year to date. Junior guard Tom Hammonds also went double digits in points, scoring 13 and notching 5 assists.
Off the bench, freshman Kyle Groothuis scored 11 and grabbed 7 rebounds in the win. Everyone on the North Florida roster who was dressed tonight saw action, it was just that type of game. "There is no better feeling as a coach when you can get guys minutes and experience during the real thing," Shell said.
Freshman forward and buzzer beater hero from the Savannah State game Devon Jones scored 5 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in the win. Senior PG Chris Timberlake for North Florida was ICE COLD scoring 0 points in 16 minutes. If the Ospreys want to be successful, he needs to be better, simple as that.
Freshman guard John Sexton for the Tribe played well but it was not enough. Sexton put up 17 points on 7-14 shooting from the field.
North Florida now increases its record to 2-3, and has won two in a row. Some may call that a winning streak.
About another week or so off until the Ospreys travel to take on the Florida A&M Rattlers in Tallahassee.

North Florida Ospreys at Florida A&M Rattlers Dec 15, 2007 1ST 2ND SCORE North Florida (2-3) 28 40 68 Florida A&M (4-3) 27 38 65
Tallahassee, FL. --- Diversity. It is a simple 4 syllable word with so much undertone and implication that for most of its literary life, most will never know the meaning.
But if there was ever a game where the North Florida Osprey's learned that, it was Saturday. "With Justin (Cecil) getting into foul trouble early, we really depended on the deep ball and worked tonight. The next game it might be different but I will take it." That was Coach Shell reflecting on the teams shift from the paint to the 3-ball to win the game against Florida A&M.
Osprey Sophomore forward Stan Januska filled some big shoes today when Justin Cecil picked up 3 fouls in less than 3 minutes in the first half. Januska and Guard Tom Hammonds combined to go 6-12 from deep. Coach Shell on the 3-pointers. "Making the shots is one thing but the ball movement is another, great job all the way around."
It was pivotal 3's down the stretch that ultimately led the Ospreys past the Rattlers. It was huge.
Januska scored 18 points while Hammonds racked up 13. Center James Grimball was a nasty presence on the glass for the Ospreys again bringing in 10 rebounds, just two points shy of a double-double.
It was a back-and-forth type of matchup the whole game with neither team leading by more than 5 at any point.
One area that needs a lot of attention however is the Osprey's free-throw shooting. "What did we go, 2-9, wait are you serious, 2-9. Well, I guess we know what we will be working on starting tomorrow." That was Coach Shell's reaction when he saw the stat sheet while being interviewed after the game.
Luckily for the Ospreys, the Rattlers were just as bad, shooting 7-19 from the stripe. Leslie Robinson and Akini Adkins led the Rattlers offensively and defensively in its losting effort.
S. Ten was a bright spot for the Rattlers rattling in 16 points on 8-15 shooting.
Adkins was pure dominance on the boards grabbing 17, almost 50% of all Rattlers rebounds today.
Also for those wondering, it only took 6 games but freshman Brent Wood scored his first points of the season. Keep an eye on him, he may have a bright future.
With the victory, North Florida is now 3-3, Florida A&M goes to 4-4. North Florida now rests up for a few days before heading down to south Florida to battle against Florida Atlantic.

North Florida Ospreys at Florida Atlantic Owls Dec 18, 2007 1ST 2ND SCORE North Florida (3-3) 38 29 67 Florida Atlantic (4-5) 35 55 90
Boca Raton, FL. --- The three game winning streak of the Ospreys came to a crashing halt Tuesday against the Florida Atlantic University Owls.
"This was the worst we have played since our opening game against Maryland," said North Florida Coach John Shell.
The final score may have been 90-67, but the laziness and inability to play good team defense for a WHOLE game stood out in this one. What also did not help was the turnovers, 16 for North Florida.
Yes, FAU shot 64% from the field and 75% from 3-point, but the game just got away from the Ospreys and they were never able to get anything back. This is ironic but North Florida actually led at halftime 38-35.
Another glaring statistic that should be noted is the difference between assists in the teams, UNF - 13, FAU - 26. Twice as many assists. You will never be able to beat a team when they are shooting lights out and moving the ball at a higher light speed than the Millenium Falcon.
But then the FAU Rex Walters must have given the ol' Lombardi speech because his Owls were on fire. Junior guard Paul Graham III scored 21, with 6 assists. Forward Jeff Parmer was a perfect 7-7 from the floor for 15 points.
For the Ospreys, guard Tom Hammonds was 2-12 for 10 points today. Coach Shell said this about his Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde star. "You know, it seems we live and die by Tommy's leadership but he is so hard on himself that at points I think he forgets he is a leader and focuses too much on himself than the team."
Sophomore forward Stan Januska led the Ospreys in scoring with 13 followed by steady eddy Justin Cecil who notched 12 points and was 5-5 shooting.
FAU defended the pick and roll almost perfectly which really hampered UNF's attack down the stretch it seemed. "You have to give them credit, especially Rex, he made changes at halftime and just crushed us," said Shell.
This whooping ends a three game winning streak for the Ospreys.
Coach Shell took full responsibility for the loss as those who know the man would fully expect. "As the head coach of this team, I need to make sure we are ready to play every game, every second. Today we didn't look like the team that had just won three straight. Especially not in that second-half."
UNF now takes a day off before heading to Miami to face the currently undefeated #23 Miami Hurricanes. It is the last game for the Ospreys before Christmas break.
Let's hope the same team we saw tonight doesn't show up against the U or it could be a very, very long game for the Ospreys.

Miami, FL. --- A case of mistaken identity?
That is quite possibly what this game was, simple as that. the U (University of Miami) came into Thursday's contest against North Florida 8-0 and ranked in the top 25. There were grumblings that Miami may have been overlooking the Ospreys and after their performance, it is hard to say otherwise.
North Florida coming off of an ***-whipping courtesy of Florida Atlantic just wanted to play better, more as a team.
The result was something that left Coach Shell speechless for most of the post game presser. "We played the best 40 minutes of basketball yet."
North Florida was down 35-28 at half. The second half saw the Ospreys defense hold the Canes to a mere 21 points.
The combined efforts of Stan Januska, Devon Jones, James Grimball and Justin Cecil on the glass really was impactful today. Even though the Canes out-rebounded North Florida, you would not of known it.
A balance attack on the offensive side of things made the Ospreys a dangerous team. Januska scored 12, grabbing 9 rebounds. Grimball brought in 8 boards and scored 11 points. All 5 starters for the UNF were either in double-digits or just a point or two away from being there.
The U's Jack McClinton scored 15 on 6-17 shooting, leading the Hurricanes offensively. Sophomore forward Dwayne Collins grabbed 13 rebounds for the Canes.
Free-throw shooting is still a problem for the Ospreys but it is something they work on extensively Coach Shell says. Today say them hit 7 of 16 from the stripe. "We practice, they get their reps in, it will come in time."
One aspect that was not a problem tonight, turnovers. North Florida 8, Miami 16. Well done Ospreys, well done.
Junior Osprey guard Tom Hammonds was hit n' miss again, going 3-8 from the floor and scoring 9 points. "Tommy is doing what he needs to, I have no gripes about him. Jesus guys, you're asking questions like we lost today," Shell was quite excited after this win.
Win the victory, North Florida is back at .500 and now has roughly a week off before traveling north to take on IPFW. It should be noted that the players get a little break for Christmas and then are back at it with games against IPFW and Notre Dame before starting conference play.
Miami is now 8-1.

North Florida Ospreys at IPFW Mastodons Dec 29, 2007 1ST 2ND SCORE North Florida (4-4) 28 43 71 IPFW (5-4) 36 45 81
Fort Wayne, IN. --- If someone was to say you're going to beat Miami and then lose to a team nicknamed the Mastadons, I am not sure I would have believed it.
"We just could not ever take the lead. Anytime we would get to within a basket, they'd hit a bucket or draw a foul." That was North Florida's head coach John Shell with his take on the Osprey's 5th loss of the season Saturday against Indiana University – Purdue University Fort Wayne or better and more easily said, IPFW.
After coming off a huge win against top 25 ranked Miami (FL.) this was probably the last thing Coach Shell and the fans wanted to see, a loss to lowly IPFW.
A sad stat was that UNF had an OK day from 3-point land, draining 10-26. But even the 10 three's were not enough to propel them past those big a** prehistoric beasts.
Osprey Senior James Grimball tallied a double-double for his efforts, scoring 14 and grabbing 13 rebounds. Grimball is averaging 8 points and 9 rebounds per game.
Sophomore Stan Januska continued his hot shooting streak, going 5-10 from deep, scoring 21 overall and bringing down 6 boards.
Hot-hand Freshman Justin Cecil was held scoreless, yes SCORELESS on 0-6 shooting. Junior Tom Hammonds did not do much either only putting up 5 on 1-9 from 3-point land. Far too many threes, but sometimes that is the way the cookie crumbles.
Another stat that usually is not in the Osprey's favor is free-throws, but even Saturday those weren't the problem, the problem is that it was hard to tell what the problem actually was. was IPFW just that much better, or was lady luck just never on UNF's side?
"You know sometimes games just don't go the way you'd think. Don't get me wrong, IPFW is a good team, but I just felt we should have won," that was coach Shell after today's loss.
UNF Freshman forward Kyle Groothuis has been a help off the Osprey's bench this season and this game was not different. Groothuis scored 10 in 7 minutes. Senior guard Chris Timberlake was 4-6 from deep for 12 points in the losing effort.
One question that seems to always be brought up to coach Shell is the playing time of Freshman guard Brent Wood. Wood who is averaging about 3 minutes and less than a point a game shows promise but coach Shell has been very clear that when Wood is ready to start, he will make sure to let EVERYONE know. As for now, more minutes and possibly more opportunities just don't seem to be in the works.
For the IPFW Mastadons, Senior forwards Dewitt Scott and Jaraun Burrows scored 25 and 17 respectively, while going 17-29 from the field. As a team the Mastadons shot just over %50 for the game.
With this win, the Mastadons move to 6-4, while the Ospreys drop to 4-5.
The Ospreys will now regroup and head to South Bend where they will face off against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
