Morehead, KY - After a 12-18 season last year the Morehead State Eagles looked to go for some fresh blood as they went about looking for a new head coach. Today they announced the hiring of James Frizzell.
Frizzell is a bit of an unknown. The 25-year old coach has no collegiate coaching experience. His only coaching experience came as the head coach of his local recreational youth league. Some doubt whether his experiences justifies his holding a D-1 job, but the Morehead State administration must have seen something in him to hire him.
"Do I have the experience justify being on this podium right now?" asked Frizzell at his opening press conference. "Who knows? One thing I do know. If I do win here, no one's going to care about my previous coaching experience. If I lose here, no one's going to care about my previous coaching experience; they're going to care about the failings I've had at Morehead State. Of course, I'd prefer the former rather than the latter."
Frizzell also lacks playing experience. The 6'0" 150 lbs. 25-year old was never all that successful on the hardwood, where he was relegated to playing at his local YMCA's rec league.
"I was decently fast and I could jump fairly well, but I couldn't pass, dribble, or shoot the ball to save my life," explained Frizzell. "Maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration, but it's not too far off the mark. But a wise man once said that you don't have to be good at basketball to be good at coaching it. That wise man was me, by the way."
Frizzell looks to bring in a Princeton offense that will test each player's cerebral and shooting abilities. This will be an interesting transition from the previous system used at Morehead State, but Coach Frizzell believes it can be a success.
The Eagles have not made the NCAA Tournament since 1984 and only have five tournament bids in school history. Coach Frizzell will look to change that.
"You just have to have the attitude to win," explained Coach Frizzell in his inaugural press conference. "Sure, you have to have talent. Sure, you have to have size, height, and all that. But, most importantly you have to put in your best effort and have the will to win. We may not have the most talented team in our state or our conference, but we can still have a successful team. I fully expect us to be very competitive in our conference this season. Our goal is nothing less than an Ohio Valley Conference Championship."
Those are strong words for a man that has never stepped onto a high school basketball court as a player or coach, let alone a college one.
