"A Look in My Eyes" - Journey Of 5'4" Guard Michael Kane

                      June 10th, 2015

A week later after our heart breaking lost against the All-Ohio team we were back on the road heading to Fort Wayne in Indiana to take part in the Spiece Run & Slam tournament event. I sat in the back on the bus hoping to feed into some of the conversation but everything was so quiet.

“Anybody know who we play first?” I asked, breaking the silence.

“Nope, but I know we’re not losing in the first round again.” Replied Sterling.

“Yeah that’s for sure. We only lost because that one dude . . . Malik. He’s like the best of our class.” Blaine added.

I honestly believed it was my fault we lost that game. Even though I finished with a great statline, I wasn’t playing good defense and Malik in company tore us up. I figured today would be different and my ambition to capture this win was unleashed and was ready to be taken onto the court.

“Aye that’s an afterthought." I said trying to prepare the team’s mindsets. "Let’s just focus on what’s ahead of us today.”

"Yeah Mike is right. We can't change the past so let's just look forward to winning today." Said Jeremy.

                      -----Later-----

We arrived at the fieldhouse a little later than expected so we rushed into the Fieldhouse and viewed the schedule which displayed us going against the Illinois Future right after Indy EBC and the Illinois Gold Rush finished their game. I couldn't help but to notice all the cameramen all throughout the courts of the Fieldhouse so curiously, I asked coach about it.

“Coach, what’s up with all these cameras?”

“It's self explanatory Michael." Coach then directed our team towards the court the front desk lady told us we’d be playing on. "This is a big event therefore there’s going to be a lot of media here today and tomorrow.”

                      -----Later-----

We ended up capping off our opponents, the Illinois Future, 60-41.

The game went our way swiftly in a blur. Early on everything was going for us and as an individual I was able to hold my own in front of the cameras. I was playing with a lot of confidence and it showed its results. We all checked the box score posted on the sideline table before walking off the court. I scanned the paper searching for my name until I spotted it, “MICHAEL KANE – 24 POINTS 0 REBOUNDS 6 ASSISTS 4 STEALS 1 TURNOVER 10-19 FG."

“Good stuff dude.” Said the approaching voice from behind me. I turned around to see it was number 8 from the Illinois Future. He was a white kid, about my size back when I was in eighth grade but he sure could ball.

“Thanks man. You did well out there too.” I said and continued to glance at the box score.

“Michael, there’s somebody here to see you.” I took an aggravated deep breath after I was once again interrupted and walked over to coach. I then realized that the man who stood next to him was Billy Donlon.

“You can take it from here.” Coach Gatson said to Billy and walked off towards the rest of the team.

“Hey coach.” I said while extending my hand out for a handshake.

“Hello Michael. What a coincidence that you’re here today. I actually came to this event to see Raymon Sol but this is even better. Now, to get started, you’ve been a name that’s been discussed around Wright State for quite a while now especially since your dad is a part of our coaching staff and I’ve actually been taking further looks of you as a prospect and all I can say is that I’m very impressed with what you have to offer. So much that we’ve come to a conclusion that we’re prepared to offer you a scholarship to our basketball program.”

                            June 10th, 2015

My facial expression froze up in an unbelievable shock. I was really receiving my first scholarship offer! I knew Wright State wasn’t as prestigious and that I had team from higher majors interested in me but after hearing this that was all put behind.

“Wow, thanks coach. I’m really going to keep that in mind, especially since I’m heading into my junior season.”

“Sounds great, but don’t rush your commitment. Take your time and think what’s best for you. Luckily you have basketball all throughout your family so they’ll be there to help you as well. Good luck next game Michael.”

“Alright thanks. See you later, coach.”

“Alrighty then. I’m going to be watching your game against EBC.” He said as I nodded and walked in another direction.

                            -----Later-----

Within the opening minutes of the game I believed I was the man after earning a scholarship. I got to the bucket with ease in my first two possessions but right after that, things started to go south. All my looks were good but they didn’t fall. Gatson took me out of the game and just shook his head at me as I took a seat. I had taken all the shots for our team so I guess I couldn’t have been surprised. EBC was leading us 9-7 after Erwin went 1-2 at the free throw line.

Quickly afterwards, I found myself off the bench. I came in and right of the bat I continued the fire off the shots. First a three pointer, then literally anything I thought about became a reality. I flew past my defender like you’d see on a YouTube mixtape. I knew I was being a ball-hog but at the time I knew I was putting in work so I felt no need to change my ways.

It wasn’t long after the second quarter until I began to receive excessive double-teams from Indy EBC. Instead of growing frustrated about the matter, I used it to my advantage to find the open man on the court. But despite me dominating thus far, every time I glanced up at the scoreboard I saw EBC hanging on right with us.

After halftime, I started to get a little heated with the team. My teammates started taking the most ill-advised shots I’d ever seen in my life. It caused and allowed EBC to start edging closer and closer to us until finally they grew a lead of their own. Coach called a timeout and that’s when thing turned around for us. Our shots started going in more often and our interior defense improved. It carried us all the way to the victory when we won 62-54.

                            -----Later-----

I swiped my hands through my face . . . My head felt terrible once I opened to towards the bright lights in front above me.

"Where am I?" I asked despite me even seeing anyone around.

                                June 10th, 2015

"He's conscious again." The un-familiar voice said. "How are you feeling?"

I didn't know what was going on nor the voice that spoke to me. I noticed something cold planted onto my forehead and tried to slapped it off my head but it was quickly replaced.

Then a series of questions bursted through, one after the other.

                                "Are you okay?"

                                "What is your name?"

                                "What month is it?"

"Shut up." I barked, still unaware of what was going on. "What is this?"

Everything started coming back to me. I looked around the room and noticed all my teammates and coaches crammed into what I realized was the emergency room.

"Michael, you had a concussion. Jed, tell him what happened." Said coach Gatson.

"Well … We were all playing in the gym and you tried going for the save but hit your head pretty hard onto the floor."

My mind flipped. I realized the consequences of the injury and the fact that we had the rest of the tournament tomorrow.

"How long will I be out?" I urgently asked to no one particular.

"Probably just a week or two. You seem to be back in good condition but you don't want to risk tomorrow or the rest of your tournament." The doctor said.

"F*ck that!" I yelled furiously. "I'm playing tomorrow!"

                                "No you are—"

                                Suddenly, everything blacked out.
