We've caught up with Pelicans GM Mike before the tip off of the 2014-2015 season to get his take on the team.
Reporter: Mike it was a wild 1st season for you here in New Orleans. How do you top that in year 2?
Mike: Well, I said I wanted to bring a Championship to my state but i never imagined it would be in year 1. Only thing to do to top that is win another one.
Reporter: You drafted Joel Embid and Exum. How will they fit into what you have going on here in New Orleans?
Mike: Joel was needed and was the #2 guy on our board. When we got the #4 pick we knew we had a good chance or getting 1 of our top 2. So when our time came we wasted no time picking Joel. He will be plugged in as our starter in the Center position. Putting him down low with AD we feel we have a great pair of bigs to rebound, block shots and also distribute from the post. Exum to us was a steal. We could have never imagined he would have still been on the board with the start of the 2nd rd. His addition will only strengthen our bench.
Reporter: You were able to bring back Babbitt and also sign DeJuan Blair in FA. Is this your plan as you add more depth to the team?
Mike: Yes! Yes! Yes! depth is the key in this league. When you have a bench that consist of Rivers, Exum, Evans, Anderson, Blair, Babbitt and Muhammad that can be nothing but a great thing. Scores surrounded by Bigs.
Reporter: This is a big season as the contracts of AD, MGK, Henderson and Rivers expire. Do you feel you can get them all back?
Mike: That's our #1 goal to keep them together for as long as possible. We will do everything within our power to make sure they stay right in the Big Easy.
Reporter: There was a report during the offseason that the owner wanted you to trade Evans. Is that true?
Mike: Yes, that report is true. I told him I just can't do that at the moment. Tyreke is a valuable asset to our team right now. Now if the right deal comes along I can't say I won't pull the trigger. That was a main reason for bringing back Babbitt. Just in case.
Reporter: The West as gotten stronger with the addition of Melo on the Lakers. Does this worry you?
Mike: I'm not going to say it worries me but any time you look at their roster you see Kobe, Melo, Pau and Jabari Parker. You just have to make sure you guys come ready to play. They will probably make a lot of noise but we are the Defending Champs people are going to come for us every night.
Reporter: Speaking of being defending champs. How has the city been since the big win?
Mike: The city, the state it has been great. We've been known as a football state. Now people are now talking about us in the same breath as LSU and the Saints.

The New Orleans Pelicans GM has been rumored to be shopping Tyreke Evans and Ryan Anderson. Thought around the league he is looking to free up money to re-sign starters who's contract is up at the end of the season. Evans is making $11.27M on a 3yr/32.20M contract while Anderson is making $8.49M on a 2yr/$16.99M contract

The Pels pulled off 2 trades after Wednesdays game against the Warriors.
Tyreke Evans was sent to the Knicks. The Pelicans received Andrea Bargnani
Ryan Anderson was sent to the Mavs for Shawn Marion
Reporter: Mike are you happy with the trades that were just made?
Mike: Yes, we got some quality players on 1yr contracts while freeing up room for our future Free Agents.
Reporter: Do you think this will effect the team at all after getting off to a great start?
Mike: I don't think so. They all understand that this is a business and we are doing everything we can to keep the Core here in the Big Easy for a long time.
Reporter: Does this mean more mins for Exum?
Mike: More mins yes. Dontae has been very special coming off the bench. We have added two guy that will complement him and Austin.
Reporter: Both AB and Marion can knock down the three ball, does these mean more shots from behind the arch?
Mike: That's up to coach. We just want guys to take the best shot possible.
