    December 18, 2008

Charleston Southern came into the Stuart C. Siegel Center and wrecked havoc on VCU this evening. The defense of CSU was stellar all night long as they forced many bad shots en route to a 65-47 road win.

Sheldon Strickland was, once again, the leading scorer for the Buccaneers as he filled his stat sheet with 17 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. Darian Vargas has done very well stepping into the starting center role, finishing with 2 points, 12 rebounds and 4 assists. Off the bench it was Saah Nimley who dropped in 14 points on 5-8 shooting with 4-5 being from downtown.

It was a rough shooting night for all of the Rams, but there was one player of note. Jared Guest finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds and a respectable double-double for the sophomore power forward.

The Buccaneers travel back home for a Sunday afternoon game as they host Nicholls State (4-4). CSU is riding a season-high 4 game winning streak with 4 games left before their Big South opener with improving UNC Asheville.

      December 21, 2008

Charleston Southern was riding a season-high 4 game win streak going into this afternoon's home game against Nicholls State, but they never expected the performance by their leading scorer. It was never really close in this one as Nicholls State powered through Charleston Southern 76-57.

For Charleston Southern it had been a while since they had seen it, but Jeremy Sexton led the team in scoring tonight. This wasn't as great as it seems since Sexton finished with only 14 points, adding 2 rebounds and 4 assists. The shooting was awful, especially from deep, going 13-41 from three.

The story of the night was the solo performance of Jeremy Smith for Nicholls State. Smith shot the lights out and finished with a career-high 34 points while also grabbing 5 rebounds. His shooting night was spectacular as he went 11-18, 7-10 from three, and 5-6 from the charity stripe. The only other Colonel in double figures was point guard Dantrell Thomas with 11 points and 6 assists.

The Buccaneers will have to lick their wounds before they go back into battle away from home with a trip to George Washington (6-5).

From the last box score I am guessing your rotations are fixed now. Starters all averaged over 30 minutes except Vargas and Deter went from 26 minutes to DNP. I am assuming Vargas was in foul trouble.

I am curious what you have Vargas for shooting tendencies on Close and drive to the hoop? He only took 2 shots and then zero. Seems like he does a good job on the boards though

I think the answers are yes and no...I'm not quite sure if it is due to foul problems or the messed up rotation cycle that keeps resetting itself whenever I leave the rotation screen. The shooting seems to be unique game to game as well...no real consistency with players shooting attempts. I understand makes and misses going up and down with no real consistency, but when a player throws up 8 or 9 shots then 1 or 2 the next game it is a little concerning.

I'll look into the shooting tendencies to see if that is where I need to tweak some things because I agree, it is like coaching, not cheating in terms of changing that stuff!

                Thanks as always, Deuce!

Looks like you're having a good start to the season. Hopefully how the rest of the Big South is doing will be an indicator for the rest of the season I have NO clue how your team manages to pull down 40 rebounds a game! It doesn't look like they're doing too well on defense though. But hey, as long as you can outscore them you can win!

I've always had a decent defense...just can't find the offense. I'm excited to get this kicking again!

                      Charles E. Smith Center
                      December 28, 2008

It went down to the wire at the Charles E. Smith Center this afternoon as Charleston Southern walked out with a huge 83-82 win on the road against a quality A-10 side in George Washington. The Colonials held an 82-81 advantage with under 30 seconds to play when the Buccaneers inbounded the ball under their own hoop. Taking their time up the court, Coach Pfeifer was not necessarily looking for time to be wasted, rather hoping to find an open shot and to take it. With 9 seconds remaining Sheldon Strickland fired up a long two that rattled the rim, but was grabbed by Paul Gombwer as he completed his double-double with the offensive rebound. Gombwer proceeded to lay in what would be the game-winning basket with just 5.4 seconds to play, a lead they would not give up. A great finish to a back and forth game that had both coaches out of breath in the end.

Four of the five starters for Charleston Southern found their way to double digit scoring en route to their highest scoring output of the season. Leading the way were the guards. Strickland and Jeremy Sexton were back to their old ways of leading the team with a barrage of threes. Strickland finished with 21 points and 3 assists, while Sexton added 19 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists. As previously noted, Gombwer came up huge when he was needed and had a complete game with 14 points, 10 rebounds and 3 assists for the big man.

For George Washington they may have a name to look out for in the future. Freshman back-up guard Buster Houston was the 34th ranked PG in the country and 104th overall coming out of HS and had himself a career day with 23 points in 22 minutes of play as the 6th man. If senior Lasan Kromah continues to shoot the way he did this afternoon, you could see Houston joining fellow freshman Wilson Johnston (19th PG, 54th OVR) in the starting lineup.

Up next for Charleston Southern is a trip down to see North Florida (5-6). Coach Pfeifer is hoping to see the offense continue to click with Sexton and Strickland leading the way.

Thanks, it all means nothing if we can't compete for a Big South title though!!

I've been off the forums all week, so I have a lot to catch up on. I'm looking forward to seeing how everyone else is doing!

                              December 31, 2008

New Year's Eve was not kind tonight for Charleston Southern who found themselves down big early, 45-32 at the half. Their comeback brought them within 4 at 61-57, however it never got any closer than that, eventually ending in an 81-71 victory for the hosts North Florida who have now climbed back to .500 at 6-6.

Charleston Southern saw Kenny Mitchell have yet another career game as he scored 28 points with 5 rebounds and 3 assists while connecting on 6-12 three pointers. Aside from Mitchell, there was not much to note offensively for the Buccaneers. Youngster Darian Vargas had a solid 4 points and 11 rebounds, but was in foul trouble throughout. This has been a constant since he has come into the starting lineup. Vargas either needs to tame down his aggressive defense, or learn to do it in a way the refs don't see it.

Sophomore point guard Jacoby Davis Jr. was out of this world with his 16 assists this evening for the Ospreys. With four players in double figures for scoring, the balanced attack was too much for CSU with Parker Smith and Jerron Granberry dropping in 19 points apiece, Hunter Williams finishing with 17 points off the bench, and Andy Diaz rounding out the group with 12 points and a career-high 14 rebounds.

The Buccaneers must lick their wounds and turn the page as they enter Big South conference play at UNC Asheville in 10 days time, a place they lost a tough overtime game 77-70 last season.
