Re: The Coaching Legacy of Danny Carmichael (CH 2K8)
November 13, 2007: Northern Colorado vs. Radford
Radford, VA -- The Radford Highlanders completed a fantastic 2nd half comeback and defeated the Northern Colorado Bears by a scored of 73-71 thanks to some last second heroics by Sophomore PG Frederick Garnett.
The Highlanders were down as much as 13 points in the 2nd half and came storming back in the final 8 minutes to take the lead and ultimately win the game.
The score was 71-70 with 28 seconds left, Northern Colorado was winning. Garnett took the ball up the court and the Highlanders set up a quick play. After a couple ball reversals, Garnett received the pass, got a screen from Drake Conn, and was WIDE OPEN behind the 3 point line and drilled the shot with 6 seconds left in the game. That shot ended up being the game winner as, Bears SF Whitney Karangwa took the final shot for the Bears and it was short.
Garnett led the way for the Highlanders in a really balanced attack all night. Garnett had a team high 12 points even though he shot 3 of 13 from the floor. Backup SG Ryan Ariza came off the bench and scored 11 points, which really helped the late Highlander run in the 2nd half by making 3 of 4 3 point attempts. Starting SG Aaron Dupre had a solid game as he scored 10 points and dished out 5 assists.
It was basically a 3 man attack for the Bears tonight. Bears C Cordero Bonfim got a double double by having a game high 21 points and a game high 13 rebounds. SG Eugene Woods finished the game with 20 points on 8 of 22 shooting. SF Whitney Karangwa had a very solid performance as he finished the game with 19 points and 7 rebounds.
The Highlanders are now 2-0 for the first time since the 2003-2004 season and will take on Gardner-Webb at home on November 17th.

November 19, 2007: Radford vs. Air Force
Colorado Springs, CO -- Radford moves to 4-0 on the season in the ugly win at Air Force.
The "Mayhem" defense continues to be a force, as it made the Falcons rush to get the ball up the court all night and because of that, they never got into any rhythm on offense.
Highlanders' SF T.J. Gouard led all scorers tonight with 15 points on 4 of 8 shooting. Gouard also grabbed 9 boards to come up just 1 short of a double double. PG Frederick Garnett had 7 points and dished out 5 assists, but missed 9 shots on the night as he continues to struggle from the field.
Air Force did not have a player on their team that scored over 9 points. Senior PG Anton Chen had the best game of any Falcons' player as he finished with 9 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 steals. Walk-On PF Bron Grochowalski finished the night with 7 points and 6 boards.
Radford's next game will be on the road at Campbell on November 24th.

November 24, 2007: Radford vs. Campbell
Buies Creek, NC -- Radford suffered their first loss in the Danny Carmichael era tonight while Campbell picked up their first win.
Tonight, it was Campbell's defense that caused the "mayhem", not Radford's. The Highlanders turned the ball over 24 times tonight in the loss and shot just 39% from the Free Throw line.
Radford was led by PG Frederick Garnett who scored 12 points in just 18 minutes due to being in foul trouble most of the game. Senior C James O'Hanon who recently transitioned into the starting lineup scored 10 points on 4 of 7 shooting and added 3 blocks to his stat line. Starting SG Aaron Dupre filled up the stat line tonight. He finished the game with 7 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals.
Campbell was led by starting SG Wesley Fulton who had a game high 14 points. Because of foul trouble, Backups SG Lelan Sykes and SG Jose Dalida played their most minutes of the season tonight. Sykes played 30 minutes and finished with 13 points, while Dalida played just 17 minutes and finished with 13 points as well. A couple of other stats to point out. Starting PG John Minnifield dished out 11 assists, while Starting C Tommy Zwikker made up for his lack of offense by grabbing 18 rebounds.

December 3, 2007: Radford vs. Gardner-Webb
Boiling Springs, NC -- Radford comes out victorious for the 2nd time this year against Gardner-Webb, winning by a final score of 81-71.
Radford was led by starting PG Frederick Garnett who was on fire shooting the ball tonight. Garnett finished the game with 21 points on 7 of 10 shooting, including 3 of 5 from behind the 3 point arc. Garnett also dished out 4 assists and came up with 4 steals. Starting SF T.J. Gouard had a great overall game as finished with 14 points on 6 of 9 shooting, 7 rebounds, and 3 steals. C James O'Hanon had every Center's dream. O'Hanon was matched up most of the night with a 6'6 PF playing Center, and he could only manage to shoot 2 of 12 from the floor. The Highlanders really lack an interior presence, which may end up hurting them down the road.
Gardner-Webb was led by Starting PG Milton Starkey who finished with a team high 16 points. Starkey also had 4 rebounds, 6 assists, and 2 steals on the night. Backup Freshman SG Rodrick Merchant came off the bench and scored a season/career high 15 points on 2 of 4 shooting.... But, he made 10 of 14 free throw attempts. Then, 6'3" PF Stefon Bro finished the game with 12 points and 8 rebounds.

December 8, 2007: Campbell vs. Radford
Radford, VA -- The Mayhem defense is at it again as 23 Campbell turnovers propelled Radford into the lead which they kept throughout the 2nd half in the 79-68 victory.
Radford was led by starting SF T.J. Gouard who finished with a team high 14 points and 6 rebounds. SG Dave Torbert came off the bench and gave the Highlanders a much needed boost. In his 13 minutes of playing time, Torbert scored 13 points on 5 of 6 shooting, including a perfect 3 of 3 from behind the 3 point line. PG Frederick Garnett added 8 points and had a game high 5 steals. But, once again, the Highlanders' free throw shooting leaves something to be desired, as they shoot just 63% from the line on 15 of 24 shooting.
Campbell was led again by C Tommy Zwikker who had a great performance. Zwikker finished with 14 points and 17 rebounds. PG John Minnifield only shot 1 of 8 from the field, but did stellar job at the free throw line by making all 10 of his attempts. SG Wesley Fulton chipped in 9 points and 5 rebounds. But, despite Zwikker's great performance, it wasn't enough to give the Fighting Camels the win. One big reason the lead grew in the 2nd half was the massive amount of turnovers. Campbell turned the ball over a total of 23 times and that's ultimately what lost them the game down the stretch.

December 17, 2007: West Virginia vs. Radford
Radford, VA -- West Virginia cruised to the easy victory tonight as they defeated the Radford Highlanders 85-58.
Radford was led by a surprising performance from Backup SG Ryan Ariza. Ariza had a team high 10 points and 7 rebounds in 22 minutes played. PG Frederick Garnett ended with 8 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists. The Highlanders only shot 33% in the bad loss tonight. One bright spot is they were 22/27 from the free throw line, but the shooting percentage and the 18 turnovers doomed the Highlanders.
West Virginia was really led by just 2 players. Junior PF Veltra Atchinson who scored 31 points and grabbed 6 boards. Junior SG Eric Merriex filled up the stat sheet tonight as he finished with 25 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals.

December 28, 2007: Georgia Southern vs. Radford
Georgia Southern came out victorious in the first round of the Gulf Coast Challenge by defeating Radford by a scored of 84-76.
Radford had a 43-37 lead going into halftime as the offense was really clicking. The Highlanders were shooting 52% going into halftime. But, the second half is when the Eagles took over the game. It all started with 7 minutes left when they went on a 10-0 run to take their first lead of the 2nd half and they didn't look back.
The Highlanders were led by SG Aaron Dupre who had a team high 14 points and 3 steals. Starting C James O'Hanon had a very efficient game shooting the ball as he scored 13 points on 6 of 7 shooting from the field. PG Frederick Garnett chipped in 10 points and dished out 4 assists. But, what killed the Highlanders in the 2nd half were the turnovers. In total, the Highlanders turned the ball over 23 times throughout the game. One bright spot for Radford is that, as a team, they shot 80% from the free throw line, since we all know they have struggled most of the year from the free throw line.
Georgia Southern was led by PF Chad Fitzwater who had a great game. Fitzwater finished with a game high 24 points and 9 rebounds. PG Romas McCleod also had a great game as he finished with 15 points and 9 assists. The Eagles as a team had 18 assists which was a big part of their 2nd half comeback.
