After the lottery the 76ers have picks 8 and 12 in the first round on top of the you have three early 2nd round picks in 34, 36 and 42. Before we dive into all the options as far as trading up goes lets take a look at the roster and see just how many spots are locked up. We will also look at how many spots in the rotation are even open for rookies.
Point Guards
Fultz
McConell
Wings
Covington (a free agent, but the team has said he will get a new deal)
Luwawu Cabarrot
Justin Anderson
Utility Player
Ben Simmons
Post
Embiid
Holmes
Saric
Okafor (option will be picked up)
Under Contract potentially Traded
Bayless
Korkmaz
Free Agents the team wants back
J.J Reddick
Walter Tavares
FA not expected Back
James Mcadoo
Amir Johnson
Stauskas
So before we even get to the draft next year you see there is just no room for another big man on the roster. It's worth noting the team is high on the 7'3 Tavares upside as a rebounder and shot blocker. If a injury down low was to happen then Simmons can play PF and Saric or Holmes could play Center.
The front office has said they want to give Covington 30 + minutes a game and find a way to move him into the starting lineup. They are two younger guys in TLC and Justin Anderson depending on how they progress that could make even more noise for playing time. Anderson was solid last year when Covington got hurt and should only get better.
Fultz was 1st team all rookie this past year and keep in mind he was only 19 so the sky is still the limit for him. If Simmons starts at PG then Fultz will move over to the 2 guard. TJ isn't much of a scorer, but can hold his own as a backup PG. It's unclear if J.J Redick will be back, but its hard to imagine the team would not want his veteran leadership and shooting ability coming off the bench. A 2 year deal at around 6 million per year should be able to bring him back.
So we have 10 guys not even counting Bayless or Korkmaz that will be back and at least 9 of those 10 are deserving of being in the rotation. The team will have some cap space also so you will want to save 2 spots for FA to be signed even if its smaller type moves for depth.
So that gets us back to all these draft picks the 76ers have and how in the world do you use all of them. I think it is safe to say that some more depth could be added at SG / PG. If you look at the mock drafts the top 2 SG's Doncic and Mushidi will be gone before pick 8. They are a handful of others expected to go in that range like SG Rawle Akins, PG Duval and PG Sexton. If you take two Guards then its hard to imagine that J.J would want to come back and sit on the bench. It would also make Bayless who was a good deep threat and versatile combo guard last year with no chance to ever see the court.
So do you just sit back at 8 take the best guard on the board and BPA at 12 ? Do you package the early 2nd rounders with 12 and go up and draft someone else. They are a alot of rebuilding teams in front of you that could use the extra young players like the Grizzles who now own picks 5 and 10 after the Gasol trade. This draft is also weak on overseas players with only 1 that shows potential.
If we have learned one thing from this article it is that trades have to happen on draft day as the 76ers do not have room for 5 rookies on its roster
