The gut wrenching saga of Emmett14 (FBCB2010)

*I am not liable for how wrenched your guts get while reading this.

With all of the amazing video games in the world, I've easily played this one the most. Fast Break College Basketball 2010. A text sim. I would not want to see how many hours I've wasted staring at the bland screens of this game.

So, what's a few more hundred hours. Here goes.

It's May, 1968 and 28 year old Emmett14 has spent the last 4 seasons as an assistant for a very successful Notre Dame program, with 4 NCAA tournament appearances in his 4 years capped off by a national championship in 1965-66.

Hampton, Virginia is where he'll begin, to coach the Hampton Pirates of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. The Pirates are coming off a very strong 24-10 (11-5) season. After winning the play-in game in the NIT, they lost in the 1st round to Pennsylvania. Unfortunately, most of that talent is graduating.

The guys in blue are graduating. It doesn't leave us much. We'll get into the roster and the staff I have to hire soon, but first a bit about the universe this is taking place in.

It started in 1900, starting with the circa 2010 alignment and a handful of changes over the years. There have been a lot of smaller colleges added, all real D2 schools that have been created and spread around the league. A lot are unaffiliated with a conference and Independent. There are too many to mention, so as we come across them we'll learn about the new additions.

Given that we're nearly 70 years from the genesis of this league, there is zero resemblance to any real life prestige, as far as Kentucky, Duke and Kansas being perennial powers in real life means nothing in this.

That being said, here are the current powers in college basketball:

    In the major conferences:

East Carolina has joined the ACC.

Illinois State is in the Big 10 and a very good college basketball program.

The PAC 10 is the PAC 11 and has the 10 from the 90's and 00's and has added UNLV. A 12th team is likely to be added in the next few season.

Memphis and Louisiana Tech are in the SEC and both are strong programs.

There are a couple of new conference in the NCAA that debuted in 1958-1959, the Frontier Conference. There are 9 teams and they currently play just 8 conference games. They do not receive an automatic bid but will sometime down the line as they accumulate a few more teams.

Again, there are a lot of minor changes that would take too long to go back and delineate. So, I won't. But, what I will do is talk about my Hampton Pirates the next post.

    The coaching staff

Basically, what I did to pick my team was find a coach my age (28) who organically took a new job and had never been a head coach. There was a guy my age, level 6 (out of 15) who took the Hampton job, I rearranged his ratings to my liking, keeping the number of points, and changed his name to Emmett14.

That is not my real hometown or high school, but the one the computer generated coach had, whose name has been lost forever as soon as I replaced it with my message board name, oops.

I have no alma mater, and will be looking to advance in ways that are natural and help my career. But, before I can even think about getting out of Hampton, Virginia, I need to hire a coaching staff.

We offer a ton of guys the minimum salary, $30,000 dollars, and they all decline. The one guy we bumped up our offer up a bit for was 32 year old Gerald Chamberlain. He's a really strong defensive coach and this will be the SE Missouri State grad's first coaching job.

Our next two spots are filled by Cornelius Zeller and Cary Martinez. Martinez is another rookie coach at 34. Zeller is the only one with any experience, the 46 year old lead scout spent years with a poor Charleston Southern program.

      Blue games are conference games.

The red game is the first game of the Lon Varnell (???) classic. It's a 3 day tournament, like all tournaments in this universe and every team is guaranteed 3 games. We're the 6 seed.

Former St. Joes walk-on (a common theme to this team). Started 5 games last year and then got hurt. Only healed up during the summer. I think he stinks. He does rebound pretty well and will get some steals, but his offensive game is bunk and his on-ball defense is worse.

A walk-on who saw a little playing time. He's got size and can score the ball a little. Really good free throw shooter. Won't kill us if he has to play a few minutes.

A former walk on at Northern Colorado. He's just awful and a waste of a scholarship.

Walk-on at the College of Charleston. Has never played. Horror show defensively, but gets on the glass some and has enough offensive game to contribute a bit. But his defense makes him unplayable.

Finally someone else with a little promise. Gentile is an undersized shooting guard with legit offensive talent. Had solid scoring rates last year, and had a good off season as well. Will see a lot of playing time, and will need to score points consistently for this team.

Walk-on who saw a little time. Can handle the ball and knock down a three. Bad defender.

Jan Bratcher, 6'5", 204, Freshman, Hedgesville, West Virginia, 2*, #629

Has some real offensive talent. Shoots the ball well and can get to the rim. Doesn't rebound or defend, but still has a little room to grow their at least. Surely will see some playing time at the wing, since he can score the ball.

        John Stansbury, 6'0", 186, Freshman, Hartsville, Tennessee, 1*, #1018

Steady ball handler that will hit an open three. Not much of a defender, and really just a lackluster player all around. But, due to the lack of point guard options he might see a decent amount of playing time.

Another former walk-on, but at least this time I recruited him. Played a total of 4 minutes at UCONN, and since he's a senior who will free up the scholarship next year anyway I took him (and Brown). Bowie is competent across the board. Holds his own defensively, will help on the glass and actually has a bit of a three point shot. Will try to find a spot in the rotation.

Another senior walk on I recruited. All of the stats above are from his days at Southern Mississippi. So he's actually played a fair amount. Has a bit of an offensive game inside and out and will get on the defensive glass some. He's a a very bad defender, though.

Former walk-on at Yale. Ovalle can rebound at an elite level and knock down a three every other game. But he's useless otherwise. His rebounding is strong enough to maybe fight for some playing time.

Played a bit last year as a freshman. Solid defensive big who will snare a few boards. His offensive game isn't much, but at least it isn't a liability. Was 4-8 from three, but has poor ratings, which worries me that he might like to shoot it.

Charles Ceja, 6'8", 246, Redshirt Freshman, Virginia Beach, Virginia, 2*, #828

Excellent defensive potential, though he's a bit raw. Same goes for his offensive game, a work in progress. Doesn't do much on the glass, but if he did he'd be at a mid-major and not here. Needs to develop, but when he does he'll be solid. He'll get some playing time just for the experience.

Zachary Fowler, 6'8", 258, Freshman, Ilion, New York, 1*, #1131

Not as promising as Ceja. He does do a good job scoring the ball and gets on the offensive glass, which I like. But his defense is sorry.

            Recruiting Class of 1969 update

I've played this game a ton and been in control of programs from the lowest of the low to 100 prestige schools and I don't think I've ever been as fortunate to start off so strong at a low level institution. I have 4 scholarships to give and before the first tip-off of my career, I've already filled 3 of them, and I'm happy with all 3. I also am the favorite for what would be the cherry on top of a great class. But, I won't jump the gun. Here's the 3 I have so far, from lowest ranked to highest.

Georgetown and St. John's didn't offer him, so don't get too excited. My scout thinks he's going to be a fantastic defender and rebounder, which sounds perfect for what I want to do. Defend and maximize possessions. Offensively, he looks versatile and competent. Should step right into playing time next year as a junior.

Another promising looking defensive player. Passes well, though can't play point, rebounds and can score at least a little. We need a lot of help on the perimeter, so anyone we sign is likely to step right into 15+ minutes and Smith certainly will.

As of right now, the star of the class. Roop is a good athlete for his size and he loves to score and rebound. His defense doesn't look like much, but in a low level conference like the MEAC, if Roop reaches his potential, he's going to cause a lot of problems for opposing front lines.

Hartford is a 15 prestige school that has 10 NCAA appearances to their name, though none since the 1942-43 season. The 10 wins (out of 18) in conference play last year was just the 3rd double digit conference win total since 1947.

PG: Green, 6'3", Junior: Started last year. Solid point guard with a nice three point shot. Averaged 8.7 points and 3 assists last season. Poor defender.

SG: Godin, 6'2", Sophomore: Started last year. Volume shooter who averaged 15 a game as a freshman, but on 38% shooting. Did make 90 three pointers last year on that same 38%. Doesn't contribute much outside of offense.

SF: Gillies, 6'9", Senior: Played 9 minutes a game last year. Giant wing that is a strong defender and doesn't add much else despite his size.

PF: Schuck, 6'11", Senior: Played 14.5 minutes a game last year and averaged 5 and 4. Average across the board. 15-35 from beyond the arc last season.

C: White, 6'10", Senior: 3 year starter. Averaged 10.5 and 8 last season. Gets on the glass and is a competent defender. Does enough inside to keep teams honest. Will get a few points off putbacks a game.

Bench: Jones is a 5'10" backup point guard who will get some steals and is aggressive with the ball. Nock is a 6'6" 3 and D reserve wing that was 23-55 from three last season, he's just a sophomore and can really defend. Oubre is a 6'8" sophomore post who looks like he'll get most of the minutes off the bench in the paint. He's got skill and should be a solid big man in his league in a few years. Nobody else looks like they'll play much.

Coach: Pat King, 60 years old. 182-229 career record. 11th season at Hartford.

Excellent offensive coach and good scout that has just sort of tread water his whole career with Hartford, never falling into oblivion, but rarely getting above .500 in conference.

Godin is the main threat, and we could be anemic enough offensively that a 25 point game from him could beat us. Would be nice to get the gut-wrenching off on the right foot.

The depth on this first team is really rough. After about 7 guys, it gets real shaky. Foul trouble and/or injuries could decimate this team.

My lineup to start the year:

                  G 6'0" Dirk Gentile, Sophomore
                  G 6'2" Earl Gordon, Senior
                  F 6'5" Jan Bratcher, Freshman
                  F 6'9" Charles Neff, Sophomore
                  C 6'10" Jan Bowie, Senior

Two freshmen, Stansbury and Ceja will be the first off the bench. Hackney is versatile enough to play the 3 and 4 poorly, and will surely see some time as well.

The first points in Emmett14's era is at the free throw line by the freshman Bratcher. By the time of the first media timeout with 15:40 left, we trail 11-13. Hartford is off to a very good start. We're 5-8 from the line. Neff has 4 points and 2 rebounds early on.

Both teams are really doing well offensively, and at the 11:10 mark we lead 24-20. Gordon's got 7 points and Neff is at 6 with 4 boards.

But both teams have cooled considerably and Hartford goes on a little run, and after we rebound a missed shot I call a timeout to regather. With 5:52 left, it's all tied up at 28. Bratcher has 8 points to lead the team. Gentile picked up his 2nd foul.

At half, the score is Hartford 37 - Hampton 35. Our shooting percentage, which started off well, is down to 35%. Gillies has 13 points for Hartford, which is pretty fluky. Bratcher has 10 for us, but is 2-8 from the field to go with his 5-6 from the line.

Bowie fouls twice in 50 seconds to pick up his 4th foul and both teams are hitting shots, and we're down 41-42 with 19:10 left.

At the media time out at 11:42, we trail 58-60. Bratcher is up to 16 points, but White is starting to beat us up inside and has 12 and 9 for the Hawks.

Godin hits a 3 for Hartford to get up to 17 points and extend their lead to 58-67. I call timeout with 8:50 and we're in trouble.

At the 2:51 mark, we're down 68-79 and we are having a hard time scoring, and I imagine that will be a frequent occurrence this season. I've hardly talked about him, but Gordon has 19 points and 6 boards on 6-9 shooting.

By the end, the score isn't a pretty one. Final score is Hartford 86 - Hampton 71. Gordon ends up with a very efficient 22 points, but everyone else to a man, struggled to score. Hartford was efficient on offense.

Thanks! Yeah, it's purely a text sim. You make subs and set things like pace, motion and 3 point shooting, pick your defense, pressure, etc...

It normally takes me about 15 minutes to play a game.

PG: Crouse, 5'11", Senior: Started 27 games total the last 3 years. Averaged 9.7 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.8 assists last year in 23 minutes a game. Solid, steady point guard all around. Plays defense, passes well, helps out on the glass. Shoots the three quite a bit, even though he can't hit them, is 51-218 in his career for 23%. Much better getting to the basket.

SG: Steffens, 6'1", Freshman: True Freshman making his first collegiate appearance. Has a very nice three point shot. Defense is poor.

SF: Hubbs, 6'3, Junior: 3 year starter. Averaged 15 points a game last year. Loves to attack the basket, and has only shot 25 threes through his first two seasons. Can create for others too, 2.7 assists a game last year. Average defender.

PF: Cray, 6'9", Sophomore: Started 14 games last year. Averaged 5.4 points and 5.0 rebounds in 21.5 minutes. Versatile forward, who could get away with playing the 3. Shoots the ball well, and will get on the glass.

C: Dickerson, 6'11", Junior: Started last year and averaged 8.5 points and 6.7 boards. Solid big man with good size. Scores some, gets on the glass and can block a few shots. Very good big man for his league.

Bench: Wisner is a 6'2 guard with a nice mid range game, but is a horrendous defender. Snelling is a true freshman guard with some offensive ability at 6'4". Their post defense is weak. Looks like the sophomore 6'7" forward, Medina, will be the main guy. Good defender who is bouncy and will block some shots. But can't score a lick and isn't much on the glass.

Coach: Hal Coleman, 57 years old. 155-138 career record. 5th season at Navy.

Solid recruiter and offensive guru. Before he got to Navy, he spent 5 years at Howard (a fellow MEAC school), where he had some decent success, always being competitive in conference and getting them to a few postseason tournaments.

They've got some offensive talent in their starting lineup, which their coach is well equipped to take advantage of. Their bench is weak, and is full of freshman and/or lackluster players. Hopefully a few of their starters can get into foul trouble.

By the 2nd media time out, at 11:49 we trail 8-10. Both teams are struggling from the field, and are under 30% so far. We're in some foul trouble as well, as both Neff and Gordon are at 2 fouls, and are horrible depth is about to be tested.

Media time out at 7:20, and we trail 10-15. Both teams are a horror show offensively. We're at 22% and they are at 25%. We're 1-12 from three and have 4 players with 2 fouls, all of them starters. My depth is so pitiful, that I'll have to risk a few of them playing.

Last media time out of the first half, and we trail 16-23, with 3:29. Have all of my 2 foul guys back in, hoping to hold on until half time. Dickerson for Navy has 8 points and 10 boards.

We survive for the most part, with just Neff picking up his 3rd. But, the halftime score is Navy 30 - Hampton 22. Navy has yet to hit a three pointer, but is killing us on the glass 27-15. Dickerson is at 9 and 12 and Crouse has 4 points, 4 boards and 4 assists. Gordon has 9 to lead the way for us, on 3-4 shooting. The rest of the team is a combined 4-16 from the field. Gentile is shooting way too much, 3-10 from the field.

Under 12 time out of the 2nd half with 11:48 and we're down 32-45. Navy's starting to get their offense going now. Crouse picked up 4 assists in 4 minutes.

7:37 left and we've made a dent, trailing 39-45. Unfortunately, Gordon picked up his 4th and will have to sit for a few minutes. He's up to 12 points and 6 boards. Gentile has slowed down a little bit, and is having a much better 2nd half, 2-3 from the field and has 15 points now.

But, they immediately go a 9-0 run and then Gordon fouls out and with 2:30 left, it's pretty well all over but the box score, and we trail 39-53.

We score a total of one point the last 7:37, a Bratcher free throw with less than a minute left. And the final score ends up being Navy 57 - Hampton 40. We shoot less than 30% from the field and are 7-30 from beyond the arc. A very ugly game. Cleland, a backup point guard had absolutely horrendous minutes. His +/- over a 30 minute average is an impossible -42.

Going to be a long year while we wait for reinforcements.

                              Location: Frankfort, Kentucky
                              Conference: Independent

Kentucky State is a team that joined the NCAA in 1911, and have been unaffiliated with a conference ever since. Typically, it can be tough for Independent squads to find their way into a conference with an automatic berth, as many of them just tread water and act as soup cans for bigger schools to beat up on. KYSU had some solid years in the 40's and 50's for their level, but didn't get an invite during those years, and have seen themselves fall back down to a 9 prestige school. They haven't had more than 10 wins in a season since the 1961-62 campaign.

They somehow managed to get a home game against Arkansas (one of the things I wish I could change in this game is how often power conference teams go on the road to play teams they would never, ever play there. Let alone having 2 or 3 games a year like that). They were beat my 30.

PG: Bunnell, 5'10", Junior: 3 year starter, averaged 5.8 points and 3.7 assists last year. Solid passer and okay defender who is very timid offensively.

SG: McNeal, 6'4", Junior: 3 year starter, averaged 12.4 points a game last year. Solid offensive guard who is competent defensively.

SF: Turner, 6'6'", Senior: Played 12 minutes a game last year. Good three point shooter, but is slow moving his feet on the perimeter, and would be better utilized as an undersized post who can stretch the floor.

PF: Wagner, 6'9", Senior: Started last year and averaged 7.6 points and 8.4 rebounds a game. Was 13-42 from three last year and is solid on the glass. Poor defender.

C: Wilkinson, 6'10", Freshman: Two star recruit out of Ohio. He's got a little skill offensively, and is another big that will shoot the three. He's already pretty developed, and shouldn't improve too much. Below average on the glass and just barely acceptable defensively.

Bench: Prater is a 6'4" sophomore guard who got 14 minutes a game last year. He's a good defender with a nice jump shot, but doesn't rebound and isn't more than a spot up shooter. Buckles is their backup point guard and he's a guy that likes to drive to the basket and then struggle to convert. Freshman Feaster gets the post minutes off the bench, getting 22 in their first game. He's very bad defensively, but he's got some skills offensively and will rebound.

Coach: Richard Finch, 35 years old. 4th season at Kentucky State.

He's a horrible coach, 35 or below in everything. These super low level schools give guys too much rope sometimes as they have such low expectations. So, Finch might be there a while.
