2024-25 NBA Season Preview: Southeast Division

The Southeast division is a giant pile of “what ifs”. If this were a Bill Simmons podcast, he’d make this its own episode full of “what ifs”and “sliding doors”. What if Jerry Sparks becomes the best 4 in the NBA? What if the move for JJJ unlocks Charlotte’s potential? What if the Grizzlies can get back to their 2022 form? What if Trae Young finally leads his team to real success? What if the young Magic just needed Dejounte Murray to unlock everything else for them? What if the Heats rebuild finally ends?

We won’t know the answers for 6 months, but we know the journey will be intriguing.

44-38 last year (8th in East). Swept by Milwaukee in round 1.
Key additions: Jaren Jackson Jr (C, 84 ovr, from Grizzlies), Dan Vignale (PG, 82 ovr, from Thunder), DeMar DeRozan (SF, 80 ovr, from Hawks), Gilson Mulholland (PG, 79 ovr, from Raptors), Otto Porter (SF, 77 ovr, from Heat), J.B. McCroskey (SF, 76 ovr, from Hartford), Darius Lovelace (C, 76 ovr, from Univ of Washington)
Key losses: Zach Lavine (SG, 85 ovr, to Nets), Lonzo Ball (SF, 83 ovr, to Grizzlies), Bobby Portis (C, 81 ovr, to Grizzlies), Richaun Holmes (C, 80 ovr, to Nets), Kris Dunn (PG, 76 ovr, to free agents), Georges Niang (PF, 76 ovr, to free agents), Malik Beasley (SG, 76 ovr, to Pelicans)

Why the Hornets are a championship contender
Because they overhauled their roster, shipping out some quality pieces but replacing them with players who are more defensive-minded, savvier veterans, and better complement their two stars: Jerry Sparks and De’Aaron Fox. Sparks is already a star, and putting a true stopper and rim protector behind him in Jaren Jackson Jr is huge. The Hornets have been one of the worst defensive teams in the league the last few seasons and shipping out Lavine, Portis, and Holmes (defensive liabilities) and adding Jackson and Vignale will do wonders for their team defense. They haven’t proven it yet, but they could be the most talented team in the East.

Why the Hornets may miss the playoffs
Because Sparks isn’t quite ready to carry a team and all the roster turnover means it’ll take a season for this group to settle and gel.

Projected record and finish: 49-33 (5th in East)

42-40 last year (9th in East).
Key additions: Lonzo Ball (SF, 83 ovr, from Hornets), Bobby Portis (C, 81 ovr, from Hornets), Dewan Hernandez (C, 82 ovr, from Knicks)
Key losses: Jaren Jackson Jr (C, 84 ovr, to Hornets), Yante Maten (PF, 82 ovr, to Heat), Moritz Wagner (C, 78 ovr, to Clippers), Jrue Holiday (PG, 76 ovr, to Nuggets)

Why the Grizzlies are a championship contender
Because Ja Morant is a superstar and they are only 2 seasons removed from losing in 7 in the NBA Finals. JJJ is a talented player, but they think Clark is just as good and Lonzo Ball provides great defense and a distribution option alongside Morant. If a few of the other wings can step up and start hitting threes regularly, this is a very scary team.

Why the Grizzlies may miss the playoffs
Because they struggled in their first year in the East and it’s debatable if their team is better than it was last year – and the East got better.

Projected record and finish: 41-41 (9th in East)

46-36 last year (5th in East). Swept by Boston in round 1 of playoffs.
Key additions: Josh Richardson (SG, 81 ovr, from 76ers), Al Horford (PF, 77 ovr, from 76ers)
Key losses: John Collins (PF, 85 ovr, to 76ers), DeMar DeRozan (SF, 80 ovr, to Hornets), Patrick Beverly (PG, 78 ovr, to Pacers)

Why the Hawks are a championship contender
Because they shook up their starting rotation just enough to better complement Young’s game, giving him a defensive sidekick in the backcourt who can make threes – Richardson complements him much more than DeRozan and Horford provides the type of leadership this team desperately needs.

Why the Hawks may miss the playoffs
Because they can’t seem to put together two straight good years and it’s not clear if Trae Young is more interested in winning or getting stats. They lost Collins and DeRozan and replaced them with Richardson and Horford, which is a step down.

Projected record and finish: 41-41 (10th in East)

21-61 last year (16th in East).
Key additions: Dejounte Murray (PG, 86 ovr, from Suns), Kevon Looney (C, 79 ovr, from Knicks), Angelo Braswell (PF, 77 ovr, from UNLV), Darryl Mitchell (SF, 77 ovr, from Lakers), Trey Lyles (PF, 77 ovr, from free agents)
Key losses: Gary Clark (PF, 81 ovr, to SuperSonics), Tim Hardaway Jr (SF, 79 ovr, to Spurs), Angelo Braswell (PF, 77 ovr, injured), Monte Morris (PG, 79 ovr, to Wizards)

Why the Magic are a championship contender
Because Dejounte Murray brings experience and leadership to a team that is on the cusp of greatness. With him at the helm, Reaser turns into a Jarrett Pressley-like floor general off the bench, and we see Jameer Trammell become a 25 ppg scorer.

Why the Magic may miss the playoffs
Because they are just 1 year away from maturing into a playoff contender. Many of their pieces still haven’t fully proven themselves and injured Angelo Braswell was certainly the missing piece they need, but he’s going to be out the entire season.

Projected record and finish: 38-44 (12th in East)

27-55 last year (14th in East).
Key additions: Yante Maten (PF, 82 ovr, from Grizzlies), William Howard (SF, 79 ovr, from Pacers)
Key losses: Otto Porter (SF, 77 ovr, to Hornets), Jarrell Brantley (SF, 76 ovr, to Spurs), Antonius Cleveland (SG, 78 ovr, retired)

Why the Heat are a championship contender
Because SGA and late-bloomer Jawun Evans make up what is arguably the best backcourt duo in the league and their young players are finally ready to step up and become the kinds of players we thought they were when drafted.

Why the Heat may miss the playoffs
Because Evans and SGA play too similarly and don’t complement each other, and none of the Heat’s young players have seemed to develop into anything more than a 7th guy on a good team.

Projected record and finish: 29-53 (13th in East)

This might be the best Charlotte team I’ve seen in my lifetime lol. Jesus Brand is a goatee name too.

I really, really want them to be good. But I'm at the mercy of the sim engine

Jesus Brand is a 3rd year wing out of Iowa State who was picked #7 overall. He's basically a great athlete who needs to step up this year and show he was worth the pick.

2024-25 NBA Season Preview: Atlantic Division

The Atlantic division is going to be very competitive. At the top you have 3 teams who believe they should win a title soon. Then you have the Nets who seem like an experiment in turning a fantasy roster into a basketball team. After that are the Knicks, whose motto is definitely “just wait until we get Bosnjak next year”. Rounding things out are the Wizards, who are mostly just happy to have some talented players to watch while they lose.

57-25 last year (2nd in East). Swept in round 1 by the Raptors.
Key additions: John Collins (PF, 85 ovr, from Hawks), Cedi Osman (SF, 78 ovr, from Wizards)
Key losses: Josh Richardson (SG, 81 ovr, to Hawks), John Wall (PG, 78 ovr, to Jazz), Al Horford (PF, 77 ovr, to Hawks)

Why the 76ers are a championship contender
Because Embiid is awesome, Simmons is very good, and their supporting cast just got a huge upgrade in John Collins. The 76ers have never had a great 4 to pair with Embiid and now they have someone who complements him exceptionally well. They just got scarier and maybe this is the year they get rid of their Milwaukee-shaped demons.

Why the 76ers may miss the playoffs
Are they actually that good? Sure, their regular season record is good, but they got swept by the Raptors in round 1 last year and they’re just an injury away from becoming the Chicago Bulls. John Collins gives them a tantalizing roster on paper, but that’s all Collins has ever been: good on paper.

Projected record and finish: 55-27 (2nd in East)

46-36 last year (4th in East). Lost in 5 games to the Bucks in round 2.
Key additions: Robert Covington (PF, 76 ovr, from Cavaliers)
Key losses: Kevin Knox II (SF, 75 ovr, to Spurs), Kyle Anderson (PF, 75 ovr, to Knicks), Londrick Helms (PF, 78 ovr, to Knicks)

Why the Celtics are a championship contender
Because any team that is good enough to bring Damian Lillard off the bench has the talent to win a title. Between Radja, Tatum, and Lillard they have 3 stars and they are surrounded by players who could be the leading scorer on a bad team in Myles Turner, Gordon Hayward, and Cam Reddish.

Why the Celtics may miss the playoffs
They won’t unless there are massive injury problems.

Projected record and finish: 54-28 (3rd in East)

45-37 last year (7th in East). Lost in 5 to the Pistons in round 2.
Key additions: Jaylen Adams (PG, 78 ovr, from 76ers), D.J. Monroe (SG, 77 ovr, from Bucks)
Key losses: Gilson Mulholland (PG, 79 ovr, to Hornets)

Why the Raptors are a championship contender
Because we know that a team led by Kawhi and Siakam are capable of winning a title and they have an even better supporting cast than they did last season.

Why the Raptors may miss the playoffs
Because their pieces fit really strangely together and they haven’t put together any consistently good runs since re-acquiring Kawhi in January 2023. This team is just a locker room argument or an injury away from being below .500.

Projected record and finish: 46-36 (6th in East)

50-32 last year (3rd in East). Lost in 6 games to the Pistons in round 1.
Key additions: Zach LaVine (SF, 85 ovr, from Hornets), T.J. Warren (PF, 82 ovr, from Pacers), Richaun Holmes (C, 80 ovr, from Hornets), Marcello Barber (PF, 77 ovr, from Duke), Mike Conley (PG, 76 ovr, from Jazz)
Key losses: Kevin Durant (PF, 88 ovr, to Thunder), Juan King (C, 81 ovr, to SuperSonics), Marko Guduric (SG, 76 ovr, to Mavericks), Caris LeVert (SG, 76 ovr, to free agents)

Why the Nets are a championship contender
Because they just sneakily become one of the deepest and most well-rounded teams in the league. Sure they lost KD, but they have 4 guys who could drop 40 on any night and more talented bench players and big men than they even had when they won the title in 2022. Kyrie and Parkinson know what it takes to win and Lavine and Warren are hungry and motivated after being discarded by their previous teams as a burden on their championship hopes.

Why the Nets may miss the playoffs
Because that’s a lot of change in one offseason and players like Lavine, Irving, and Warren aren’t known for playing in ways promote a winning and team culture. In an East that is stacked, one rough stretch could have you on the outside looking in.

Projected record and finish: 45-37 (7th in East)

32-50 last year (12th in East).
Key additions: Jaylen Brown (SG, 84 ovr, from Trail Blazers), Bruno Fernando (C, 81 ovr, from Bucks), Kordel Cleaves (PF, 79 ovr, from Univ of Kansas), Lonnie Walker IV (SG, 78 ovr, from Timberwolves), Londrick Helms (C, 78 ovr, from Celtics), Darren Bonner (SF, 77 ovr, from Timberwolves)
Key losses: Jarek Kickert (PF, 78 ovr, to Spurs), Marcus Derrickson (SF, 78 ovr, to Clippers), Dewan Hernandez (C, 82 ovr, to Grizzlies), Nikola Mirotic (PF, 77 ovr, to Lakers), Kevon Looney (C, 79 ovr, to Magic), Tyler Davis (C, 79 ovr, to Jazz)

Why the Knicks are a championship contender
Because this is the most talented they have been in a long time, probably even more talented than the Carmelo-Stoudamire stretch. Rubio distributing to Ingram, Brown, and their deep supporting cast, the Knicks could be a dark horse in the East.

Why the Knicks may miss the playoffs
Has Brandon Ingram or Jaylen Brown ever won anything? Have the Knicks shown the ability to put together anything resembling a winner for over 20 years? No and no. Sure, the Knicks fans have hope, but we have reality: this franchise is built by losers and with losers. Once Bosnjak joins from Europe next season, we may be having a different conversation though.

Projected record and finish: 44-38 (8th in East)

36-46 last year (11th in East).
Key additions: Monte Morris (PG, 79 ovr, from Magic), Luke Kennard (SG, 78 ovr, from Clippers)
Key losses: Cedi Osman (SF, 78 ovr, to 76ers)

Why the Wizards are a championship contender
Because RJ Barrett and Goga Bitadze continue their trajectory from last season and show us they are ready to be the new best 2-man game in the NBA. If the Wizards add 1-2 quality pieces at the trade deadline, they could surprise people.

Why the Wizards may miss the playoffs
Who am I kidding. Since when did a team built around Barrett and Bitadze become something we’d take seriously?

Projected record and finish: 20-62 (16th in East)

It's so true. Their FA moves have been bad. Their trades have been bad. Their draft picks have been bad.

R.J. Barrett + Goga was a lot of fun last year, even if they lost a bunch. But that's not gonna help them win. I'll be interested to see how they eventually turn it around.

Again stepping back in time... back to the end of 2020

Like others reading along, I felt like the win against Fairleigh Dickinson which got St. Francis to 9-9 in conference play was gonna lead to something a little surprising. Alas, it was not to be after the Will Frandsen dagger. I've been slightly more interested in the SFU story so far and that hurt lol.

Still, it was exciting to see Oggy step up and get that win with Jahnke being so key throughout. Surprised he wasn't selected player of the game on the broadcast.

An even more exciting affair against NAU, Stiles was money until he wasn't with those free throws. Right down to the wire there.

Couldn't have been more stunned to see Portland State take a big fat one right there on the court in front of everyone. Thought for sure they would be the end of the road. Can't wait to continue and find out what happens with the tournament and the offseason. Congrats to Oggy!

It's always a treat to enter the time machine with you

That Robert Morris loss was killer. First true heartbreak for either brother and Dinko wouldn't forget that game.

Was so surprising to see the Portland State game not even be a contest. Was really quite surprising and it's a huge deal for Oggy to make the tournament in year 1.

Enjoy the brothers' first post-season and offseason. Season 2 has some twists and turns to it.

                    In-Season Recruiting Update

The in-season recruiting period has wrapped up and it was a disappointing one for Dinko. He saw 2 players that he had scholarship offers to commit elsewhere and he’s falling behind on his #1 recruit Jerel Cross.

Cornell House, the #77 overall small forward, decided to commit to Akron.
Herb Halsell, the #108 overall center, decided to stay closer to home and committed to LSU.

With those 2 gone, Dinko and his staff re-analyzed and re-ranked their entire recruiting board and offered scholarships to 2 new players:
                    1. Ben Iti, a 3-star SF out of Australia.
                    2. Dedric McFadden, a 3-star (#126 overall) SF from Chicago.

                    Top Prospects
We saw 17 of the top prospects sign this week, which is fewer than usual. The big winner was North Carolina as they grabbed the #2 shooting guard (Toby Meade), the #3 point guard (Nik Randolph), and the #4 small forward (Lou Ere) to give them three 5-star recruits. It’s been 5 years since their national title run and they saw Duke win it twice since then, so the folks in Chapel Hill are getting antsy for another title.

Just a few hours away, NC State has punched above their weight as they have grabbed the #4 point guard in Andrew Nevill and the #5 center Wiley Beckwith. Florida State also grabbed 2 prospects.

One prospect of note is the #16 overall player and 2nd ranked center RJ Bartlett. The Cleveland, Ohio native is an alum of the Drago’s Dominators big man camp and is eying West Virginia, UConn, and Pittsburgh.

Tough break in the recruiting period, although I can't imagine there's much you can do if someone has a scholarship from an SEC school on the table (not sure if the game applies the logic or not). Hopefully Dinko gets one or both of Iti and McFadden.

Yeah, the game absolutely does. Each recruit has a list of top priorities. They can be things like:
                        1. Play close to home
                        2. Good coaching
                        3. Chance to play/start right away
                        4. Play for a big program
                        5. and some others I'm forgetting

What can stink is by the time I learn a player's priorities (like wants big school and to be close to home) I may have already offered him a scholarship. So then I either need to let him go or hold onto the sunk cost fallacy

Amazing, it's an honor to be put on the front page, and I love how you described the dynasty.

Pretty cool how the tournament selection show noted that this was N. Colorado's first appearance in the Big Dance.

Well, Kansas was never going to lose to Northern Colorado, I'm happy Jahnke could go off and score some points. Sometimes I wonder if we're STILL not seeing teams shoot enough three-point shots, as you pointed out the volume of shots it took there, that's still - slightly - more points per shot than if he went 6/12 from inside the 3 point line.

I've always found this an interesting topic and remember doing some math and finding that Steph Curry netted almost 15% more points per shot taken than MJ in his career. (of course, free throws off attempted 2-point shots largely evens this out I'm sure). I'm hoping that one of the coaches eventually goes 3-ball heavy in his attempt to win a natty.

It was nice to see the three guys receive all-conference awards. Good thing there was talent to be had even if they aren't world beaters like you're hoping to get eventually.

A blue blood comes through and wins no matter their seed, most of the time, and UNC made the grade this year.

Who replaced Steve Fisher at SDSU? Any idea?

One thing I can say is that despite how much info you post which is amazing, I can go pretty fast when I get time because - for obvious reasons - the NBA is F*$#*&g dead to me. Like, more dead than any person in the ground on planet Earth. Although... Respect to Nate McMillan. Hope he can indeed turn the T Wolves around.

I may have missed it, but did you post the individual stats at the end of the year? Super shallow teams for each coach in year 2. No injuries? Does the one recruit signed by Oggy do anything in his career?

Good video posted at the end of p 26. Watching the highlights of game play, it looks nearly impossible to drive to the hoop as - although physics in certain areas appear really good - they just stop when their path is blocked. Is it possible to have players that are good at driving to the hoop or is that something you can only do when the seas part?

Yeah, the way that basketball has changed - it's sort of like the way the NFL changed from the 70s to 90s to 2010s. It's the same sport and guys could succeed in any era, but they've developed habits and skills that helped them succeed in that era. No doubt Jordan and Curry would have been drastically different players if you shift them by 20 years.

If either brother gets enough shooters, they'll definitely use it. Lennox Evertsen (future recruit of the brothers) may be the best sharpshooter either has recruited so far.

It turns out that Fisher retired in 2017, so he wasn't the coach in this dynasty. It was Brian Dutcher, who (in this alternate reality) is now at Valparaiso.

Spoiler alert: he doesn't. But the guys they hire to replace him are a big surprise, and it's kinda fun (former players as HC and assistant duo).

You know, I don't think I post my teams' end-of-season stats anywhere. Probably a miss, and not sure why I don't.

EXTREMELY SHALLOW. It was a rough year 2 due to the recruiting struggles (which I actually loved for story purposes). Taron Guy does come through and make an impact for Northern Colorado, because he's just so tall and wide, he was tough for opponents to deal with.

There definitely are injuries at times, and both brothers deal with them a bit more in years 3-5, if I recall correctly...but I don't think the injury bug strikes much in year 2.

No, if a player has a good handle, decent acceleration, decent jumping, and decent layups/dunks, they can definitely drive and finish through contact. I think Andres Swanson does this some for Northern Colorado and you'll definitely see a number of gifs and videos of Muhamed Payne doing this for St. Francis (pay attention to that name, he is still probably the greatest player either brother has coached).

The game is old and has some silly things, but it's really quite fun to play.
