    Thanks!

Also, Stetson should have hired Oggy IRL. Made the tournament for the first time in school history:

Cool to see you still going at this after all this long. Any plans to do something for the college football game when it comes out ?

        Thanks man.

I probably won't do anything officially with the game, though I may play it. I've tried football, soccer, and basketball dynasties, and seem to have more fun with the documentation and storytelling for basketball than I do with other sports.

I am sure the football section will absolutely take off though with tons of new NCAA dynasties.

          Coach callouts

You may have missed it in the NCAA season preview video, but there were 2 new hires called out by Greg and Clark: Mark Pope and Ogyan Dragomirav.

While it's notable for Oggy to be called out and shows his growing profile in the NCAA landscape, it is especially comical to have him called out next to Pope, who he very publicly criticized a few months ago.

Glad this is back, Oggy at LMU is going to be interesting for sure, being in the WCC gives Oggy the potential to compete at a high level. Loyola Marymount has put together some quality teams in the past, can Oggy bring them back to their heights in the 1980s, we will see.

That's absolutely the goal. Can he spend 3-4 years here making them respectable, then get a Big 6 job? It'd be awesome to get them back to the tournament after 30+ years away.

Well, I hit the game save issue again. None of my changes are saving. I am not sure how I precisely fixed it last time, but I'll keep messing around to see what I can do. I am working on the Spurs now - which means I only have 9 teams left.

I'll pivot over and get some College Hoops updates posted soon.

November 4, 2024 St. Francis at Tulane [Non-conference]

Dinko and St. Francis have a unique honor: they face Tulane in the very first basketball game of the 2024-25 NCAA season. The game also carries a special significance for him: if he wins the game, this marks 100 wins in his coaching career. A great milestone that shows he’s averaging nearly 20 wins per season so far.

The game will not be easy, however. They are on the road against a Tulane team that features first-round NBA prospect Jazz Grace (SG, 86 ovr). Grace is a very well-rounded player who has a great shot and will be tough to slow down. Tulane surrounds Grace with a lot of lanky wing players but not much top-end height or other shooting. Grace is their only true outside threat and they only have 1 player 6’10” or taller.

The game looks like it should be fast-paced and high scoring – a great kick off to the college basketball season.

St. Francis jumped out to an early 13-6 lead largely thanks to Chris Thompson’s play in the post. Jazz Grace had no impact on the game so far and was subbed out. Immediately the Green Wave went on a 7-0 run to tie the game and Dinko called timout.

A few minutes later the game was still tied, this time at 23-23, and Jazz Grace was officially in foul trouble and likely wouldn’t be seen again this half. It was truly a back-and-forth game and Dinko felt the team had a good chance to win if Jazz Grace kept struggling.

Erwin Willingham fakes a Tulane defender out of their shorts on a breakaway.

The game was tied at 27, then Chris Thompson decided it was time to take over again. Supplemented by 2 steals from Erwin Willigham as well, the Red Flash went on a big run. Tulane took a timeout when the score was 34-27 but it made little difference as St. Francis went into halftime with a 45-33 lead.

That was a tremendous end to the first half, with the last 7 minutes being an exceptional 18-6 run for the visitors. The gameplan of feeding Chris Thompson inside and getting out on fast breaks seemed to be working very well. Thompson had 14 points while Akindele added 8 for St. Francis.

The Willingham-to-Diakite oop that gave St. Francis a 7 point lead in the first half.

5 minutes into the second half, Jazz Grace finally scored a bucket. This cut the St. Francis lead to 10 points and had all the fans in the arena wondering “would Grace finally heat up?”

Initially, Erwin Willingham responded “no way”. He had an assist, steal, layup, block, and a dunk-and-1 in a 30 second period that extended the lead to 15. However, Tulane responded emphatically and cut the lead down to 7 points. Dinko could see his team fading a took a timeout, exhorting the team to slow it down and work the ball inside.

St. Francis got the lead back up to 70-59 and Dink breathed a sign of relief, but it was short lived. Jazz Grace was on fire and had scored 21 points this half and very quickly cut the lead to 5. In a desperate move, Dinko started to double team Grace when he got the ball – and it worked initially as they forced a jump ball.

With 1:30 left, the Red Flash started wasting time. However, this has been a losing strategy for them in the past, and it would prove to be so again. After Diakete missed both free throws when fouled, Tulane’s PF Parks makes an and-1 and cut the lead to just 2 points. Then Diakite turned the ball over and Dinko had no patience for more mistakes from the senior. He subbed him off and replaced him with Bobby Valdez.

With 15 seconds left and down by 2, the Green Wave had the ball for the last shot. St. Francis doubled Maldonado in the corner with just a few seconds to go, but he found Hart in the opposite short corner and he drained the shot as time expired to force overtime.

St. Francis was down 3 early on, but Taj Hailey made his heroic return from a redshirt season by nailing 2 free throws and then Willis Holman threw down a fast break dunk. St. Francis was up by 4, but Tulane went on a 5-0 run and found themselves up by 1.

A few minutes later, with just a single minute left in overtime, St. Francis was up 95-93. Tulane hit 1 of 2 free throws to cut the lead to 1 point and Dinko subbed on his best free throw shooters, knowing that Tulane would be fouling.

With the score at 95-94, Chris Thompson was fouled and missed the first of his 1-and-1 which gives Tulane a chance to win the game with the last shot.

However, Tulane tried to hit a bounce pass to the inside and Fernandez Markovic stepped in front of the pass and stole the ball with 2.5 seconds left. He was immediately fouled and the Red Flash’s best FT shooter was sent to the line. He made the first, but missed the second.

Tulane got the ball down the court and barely missed the go-ahead three to give St. Francis the 96-94 overtime victory!

Chris Thompson and Floyd Akindele led the way with a combined 45 points and Vern Quick added 16 for the victors.

Tulane had 25 assists this game to St. Francis’ 17 and Jazz Grace scored 24 points, all in the second half. Maldnado had 11 assists and 14 points, Hudson had 21 points and 8 boards, and Parks had a 10 and 10 double-double.

                    Congrats on Oggy's 100th win.

I'm going to stan Chris Thompson this year, a combination of him being a high-energy 4 and sharing a name with the former Washington running back. What year is he in?

Oh man, I forgot about the RB Chris Thompson. He was fun.

Our Chris Thompson is a junior. He's been solid and reliable starting at the 4 ever since he was a freshman. His biggest downside is probably his biggest upside: he's pretty good at everything, but excels nowhere. He will definitely contribute this year, but as with many college teams, it may be next season he shines as Vern Quick and Floyd Akindele graduate.

Yeah, all around pretty special day for St. Francis. This is the last year this whole group will be together, so it would be sad if they don't win the regular season and post-season titles, as well as make some sort of splash in the NCAAs.

Coach Kostadin now has 100 victories in just over 5 seasons and the fans are excited for what should be a fantastic season in Loretto.
