Tovarich: It's encouraging to see there are other teams in the country who are as bad as we are. We couldn't do much wrong tonight. They couldn't do much right. I know the feeling.

Reporter: Doesn't this prove you can use your big guys and stop taking so many 3's?

Tovarich: No. It proves their big guys are as bad as ours, so we weren't at such a disadvantage. They have all the same problems we do.

Reporter: You really locked down on Bright in the 2nd half.

Tovarich: Yeah, when he has 19 at halftime, you may as well try to do something, so we played tighter on him. He snuck away a couple times, but it was kind of obvious they're a one-man team and no one else had it going tonight. That's us sometimes when Tyson's nailing all the 3's and we can't make a layup.

Reporter: You're 1-0 in conference, is that encouraging?

Tovarich: Well, we just have to not finish last to make the conference tournament, so maybe 2-3 more and we clinch a spot? Haha, I know our conference is pretty lean, so we'll play some bad teams, but we're an alright home team so far and we're pretty miserable on the road. We're a somewhat young team, so that's to be expected and I hope to get even younger next year and have that problem all over again.

Tovarich: I'd like to take credit for their late collapse, but I don't think we had anything to do with. They got our lead from 7 down to 1, then we scored 16? in a row and they couldn't hit a shot until the last 2 minutes when they were done.

Reporter: Your big guys had a good game. Would you like to praise them or just blame the other team for being bad?

Tovarich: They did a good job taking advantage of the opposition's similar lack of skills. So both?

Reporter: They're not motivating you to move the offense to being less dependent on 3's?

Tovarich: This works against St. Francis and Delaware State. It won't be working against our next 5 opponents. So, no, I likely won't get away from that. We'll be grossly outmatched in the trenches for the next 5 games I assume.

Reporter: You don't play another home game for 44 days and haven't been too competitive away from home so far. What kind of ideas do you have to play better away from home?

Tovarich: It's common amongst most teams. I don't know what to do. We'll be slowing them all down as long as we can.

Studbucket: Maybe try some 3-2 or 1-2-2 zone?

Tovarich: Sure, can't hurt. I imagine we're going to have a lot of defensive problems in these next 5 games when we're big underdogs. I may as well try every combo of numbers they've invented for zone at some point and experiment.

Tovarich: Not much traveled with us as usual. Rough shooting night, particularly down low. It felt like none of the big guys could do anything. Funny how it seemed to happen to all of them. Their big guys must be incredible to cause all those misses with few fouls.

Reporter: You didn't try any zone.

Tovarich: Wish I felt like I could have but with that Thornton guy going for 18 at half, I saw no good reason to possibly leave him even more open, not that many was working either. We stayed tight on him, had a hand in his face frequently and it felt like nothing we did was going to matter and he was going to go off.

Reporter: The in-season recruiting week ended. Anything to share?

Tovarich: No. I thought we might get one commit, we still could get him. Don't know why he didn't sign yet. Hopefully no one else ends up swooping in. Most people we were going for ended up signing somewhere, so we had to re-start for the most part.

Reporter: Moore and Mirjacic each made the most of their minute of play. Any faith being restored in them?

Tovarich: It was nice of them both to contribute, but it doesn't change that it's better for all involved if they...I'd say transfered, but if you can't play here, you can't play anywhere else either, so pursued some other opportunities outside of basketball next season, and by playing them too much, they might get the false sense of security in their spot on the team should they attempt to come back.

Reporter: Do you expect to win any of your 4 tournament games coming up?

Tovarich: I don't see a path to winning either game in El Paso. We're quite outmatched by all those teams. If we're lucky, we get a favorable 3rd place game in Orlando.

Tovarich: It's hard to explain things you see sometimes. Popovic missed his first SEVEN shots, all from point-blank range. I can't explain how someone 6'10" can get blocked by the rim twice, how he can jump and all it has to do is fall off his finger to go in and he somehow doesn't let it roll enough. It's like there was an invisible shield over the basket, but ONLY when the big guys shot. Incredible. Speaking of incredible, their defense to force all these missed shots. AMAZING. Great interior defense I think I've ever seen.

Reporter: They tried to turn that into a track meet, did that wear you down a bit?

Tovarich: Yeah, that first 7 minutes where they pressed and we inexplicably were forbidden from making a layup was too fast. Had to go all the way down the bench. We slowed it down as best we could after of course. Can't be doing that, as painful as it can be to stand around and dribble while the clock runs.

Reporter: Playing the track meet game didn't go that badly, are you sure you can't make more use of the bench and play that way?

Tovarich: If I thought that was better, that's what we'd do. Next year we'll have some more bodies and I may be able to run up and down more and press occasionally.

Tovarich: Another team shooting 60%, I guess we just don't know how to play defense. Guys did a good job keeping it close and we missed the 3 at the buzzer to go to OT, but we did a good job just keeping it that close. Tried some pressing at the end because we felt fresh enough thanks to Buffalo calling some timeouts for us. Won't be a long term possibility, but it got us a few turnovers today and once I have some more bodies, I look forward to trying it some more.

Reporter: No Mirjacic and Moore again?

Tovarich: Nope. Too close of a game.

Reporter: The first half you slowed it way down. Was Buffalo really worthy of such a tactic to keep the game close?

Tovarich: Compared to us, all of our opponents are.

Reporter: Is heading into conference season potentially on a 5-game losing streak going to make things more difficult?

Tovarich: I don't think so. Maybe some pep talks are needed for the start of that. It's not like we expect to be 10-3 or something gaudy when we go in. That game back on December 1st being a conference game makes scheduling kind of a pain with the rules, so we have to play some tournaments to fill the gaps and we still have 12 days off coming after the Central Florida tournament and we're going to have a rough draw in any tournament no matter who we get, but getting the hosts twice in a row is a little tougher.

Tovarich: That's the worst game I've ever been apart of in my life.

Reporter: How was that team 3-6?

Tovarich: Baffling isn't it? The Orlando Magic should be undefeated in college basketball easily.

Reporter: Any positivies to take away?

Tovarich: Nope. Everyone shot badly. I don't get how you can shoot 33% from point-blank range. Amazing defense. Tons of blocks. I hopefully can recruit someone who can make a layup. 45-21 on the boards was actually closer than I thought. It felt worse. I think they got offensive rebounds on 80% of their own missed shots. Officially it only gave them 6 blocks. It had to be closer to 16 and yet almost all without fouling. Incredible.

              Reporter: Is tomorrow's game winnable?

Tovarich: Sure, I guess. They're 2-10, but they're still better than we are.

Tovarich: The big guys were able to make some layups tonight. It was nice to play another team who isn't big either. It's pretty depressing watching all these guys who may as well be Shaq compared to ours and not being able to do anything about it.

Reporter: You're around .500 against the quality of teams you'll see the rest of the season. Is that encouraging?

Tovarich: It makes me think we can win a few here and there. We're still picked to finish last for a reason. But at 5-8, we're tied for first in winning percentage. It's a rough conference but we contribute plenty to that.

Reporter: Can this be the start of some momentum heading into conference play?

Tovarich: We have two on the road up next. This was the first time we won a game away from home, so I wouldn't count on it.

                Reporter: Moore went 3-3.

Tovarich: Yeah, I'm not saying I deserve an award or anything for letting him play and giving him the green light to shoot the wide open layups against the press at the end, but if anyone was losing faith in humanity, just remember the kindness I showed and feel warm and fuzzy about it.

Reporter: How do you feel about how recruiting is going?

Tovarich: Not great. We're on as many people as we can be and hopefully some fall through the cracks. I only got one guy I feel good about getting at the moment. It'll have to come together at the last minute in the offseason I fear.

Tovarich: Couldn't hit a 3. Couldn't rebound. Way too fast of a game.

Reporter: Why can't you play well on the road?

Tovarich: I imagine there are coaches who are a lot further into their career than 14 games like I am who still haven't found the answer to that. I don't know.

Reporter: You did a good job getting their big guys in foul trouble in the first half. Why couldn't you do the same in the second?

Tovarich: They must have made amazing adjustments. But we were so far behind the whole time we were shooting all sorts of 3's, so we weren't driving it in so much, especially when they finally stopped the full court press.

Reporter: We saw some 1-3-1 zone. Is that going to continue?

Tovarich: I don't know. Everyone shoots such a high percentage against us, it seems like zone just makes them more open. Not much works.

Tovarich: I'm at a loss. That's a team on paper not much better than us. You'd expect to be competitive and we were for a half. The second half was incredible. Their PG can drive it in the lane and make it against our big guys. Our big guys wouldn't make a layup if a someone in the stands got in their vision. Can't win when you get outshot 65%-40%. Can't get outshot 15-4 at the line. Amazing how they don't foul but everything we do is a foul. Great job by them hitting that 3 at the buzzer. We won't see them the rest of this season unless it's in the MEAC tournament, but I'll remember it.

Reporter: What else can you try?

Tovarich: We tried some 2-1-2 zone. We'll draw a different set of zone numbers out of a hat and try that. There's not much we can do. We are what we are and we have a lot of weaknesses.

Reporter: You're back home now. Does that give you a little more confidence?

Tovarich: Can't hurt. We play semi-competently there.

Reporter: Are you actually trying to accomplish anything this season or are you just waiting for this one to end so you can move on to next year?

Tovarich: The current players can consider this somewhat of a tryout to stay on the roster for next season. I'm doing what I can with what I have, but getting better players isn't as easy as it sounds. There's not much of a draw here for recruits either. This is a very long-term project. In the short term, it's very frustrating, but we're doing the best we can.

Tovarich: Luckily they only shot a pedestrian 40something percent in the second half. Their 62% in the first half was super human. Amazing for a 2-9 team. It's rough when you have to hit 14 3's to eek out a home game against a team with only 2 wins, but that's life for us. At least we got a win.

Reporter: Do you think it was a mistake for them to stop pressing you in the second half?

Tovarich: Probably. Maybe they finally got tired. The big guys were about 50%, but I am not understanding their allergy to dunking. They're right under the basket, it's the right there. The basket isn't lava. It's not glowing green from radiation. Yet, instead of dunking, they do all these cute little shots from 2 feet and I can't watch them miss anymore. It's infuriating. The lack of aggression at the basket is why they all need to be replaced. I'd play 5 guards if I had 5 guards and it wouldn't get us killed.

Reporter: So what is your ideal style of play when you can morph the roster into something you'll be less fatalistic about?

Tovarich: I'd probably like 4 guards and one gigantic Shaq-like center who can grab a rebound, unlike just about everyone on this roster. I'd like to play quickly and get out in transition. I'd like to hockey sub all 5 guys in and out. It's depressing the style of play I feel like we're forced into with lack of personel.

Reporter: How important is the next home game before the 4-game road trip?

Tovarich: All the home games are important. I have zero faith in us winning one on the road. Gotta get as many at home as we can.

Tovarich: That may be the new ugliest game this year. Abominable shooting. That big guy they have single-handedly out-rebounded us. I'm amazed it was even close since they out-shot us 63-34%. I think we once missed 8 shots in a row. It felt like the basket was playing defense against us too.

Reporter: You've had multiple games of just 4 FT's. Is there any motivation to get to the line more?

Tovarich: I'd like to, but I guess every other coach is great at teaching interior defense without fouling, and I've reached my quota of missed layups because someone was breathing on them. I'd rather just watched some missed 3's if I have to watch more misses. We often shoot better from out there.

Reporter: You didn't really try and zone in that game?

Tovarich: They were 0-7 on 3's despite winning easily, so the defense wasn't too bad. We forced them into some turnovers but we just couldn't shoot.

I know the team is bad, but 6-11 is decent for this team.

Any possible recruits that aren't just warm bodies? Maybe that "big Shaq-like" center?

Tovarich: I think a few people in the crowd likely fell asleep during that one. It took some extreme tactics but we stumbled our way into a road win somehow.

Reporter: Is it encouraging to get a road win or discouraging because of the strategy you feel you need to get it?

Tovarich: It's encouraging that something worked. I know it took some luck. They had 3 chances to take the lead in the last 2 minutes and happened to miss all 3 and it was nice of them to play out the defensive possession with only a 6 second difference on the clock.

Reporter: Is full court pressing something you might do more of?

Tovarich: We only did it for about 3 minutes. That's about all the stamina the team has for that right now, so don't count on it.

Reporter: You stayed in man the entire game, why do you think you forced so many turnovers?

Tovarich: Their big guys were a bit clumsy with the ball, so when we double teamed them in the paint, it threw them off a bit and they gave some back to us.

Reporter: Does Davis have a red light on shooting 3's yet?

Tovarich: Yeah, probably. Their 1-3-1 zone lead to him having some open shots, so he took them. But both PG's are slightly under 25% for the year, so yeah, we need to stick to the other two guards. It'll have to be desperation at the end of the shot clock for them to take one now.

Reporter: Tyson has attempted 67 3's more than anyone else in the country. Are you going for some kind of record with him?

Tovarich: No idea what the record is, but it's our best bet on many possessions.

Tovarich: Frustrating ending, but I guess I'm proud we almost overcame the refs and all the other bizarre things that kept happening.

Reporter: Would you like to have gotten a technical?

Tovarich: Yeah, that would have been great, but it seems like you can't 17-2 FT's and 13-1 fouls was laughable. We weren't allowed to breathe on them.

Reporter: Why go to Krleski at the end for the 3 instead of Tyson?

Tovarich: Neither were shooting well. Krleski was more open. Not surprised whoever bricked the 3. It's the part where we got the rebound and missing a point blank layup. It all just felt predictable.

Reporter: How big was their 16-0 run in the 2nd half?

Tovarich: Amazing how we clawed back from 13 down and then the instant we took the lead, it's like they turned into an NBA team all of a sudden and we couldn't score for 12 possessions in a row. I'd love to ask their coach how they just decide to play like that and why they don't do it every game. You'd think they'd be a lot better than 5-14 with that power.

Reporter: This would have put you 3 games ahead of them in the race to avoid being the lone team left out of the conference tournament. Is it that much more frustrating?

Tovarich: We get them at home at the end, so we have some winnable games still. If we'd gotten this one, I'd say one more and we're safe to stay out of last. Now I feel like we need 3 more.

Studbucket: Any possible good big men in recruiting or are you just going to end up acquiring warm bodies?

Tovarich: We've gone overseas trying to find some big guys. Having little luck with much. I have a feeling I may end up saving some scholarship and waiting for next year to use them. We're in good shape on one recruit and ok shape on another if he doesn't go to High Point, but it's rough gathering interest from much of anyone. Going to have to work on my recruiting skills in the offseason.
