Tovarich: Good balance of scoring. Rebounding not great. Did a good job getting to the foul line.

Reporter: You started Tyson, but then moved him into the B team. What's the logic there?

Tovarich: Trying to keep his confidence up a little. Maybe if we call him a starter it'll help a little. The guys who started last year and aren't this year are getting pretty down on themselves and the unhappiness is already moving through the B group.

Reporter: Don't you want most of them gone anyway?

Tovarich: I don't know. I am more familiar with them. They're apparently not as talented as the new recruits, but the new recruits aren't playing that great either. I'm not in a rush to run them all out even though I can probably get someone with more 'talent' and keep starting this team unity thing all over from the bottom again and again.

Reporter: You're the underdog of the 4 teams in Charleston, do you think you can get any wins there?

Tovarich: I guess since they're "neutral" and not road games, maybe we'll be able to do something. We've had some rough road losses so far.

Reporter: You seem to be pressing from the start, but then stop after a few minutes. What's the plan with that?

Tovarich: Just mixing it up. Can't be too predictable.

        Tovarich: Yes.

Reporter: Did you notice that when they did a lead pass that everyone seemed to suddenly move in slow motion on defense and it's like the ball went through them to make sure they caught it for an easy layup?

        Tovarich: Yes.

Reporter: Why do you think they hurried to score when inbounding the ball with 7 seconds to go?

        Tovarich: Yes.

Reporter: Do you hear anything we're saying coach?

Tovarich: Crazy to be +20 in turnovers and +10 in shots just to eek out a tight win over a 2-9 team. Luckily they cooled off in the second half. They went from 86% on 3's in the first half, so obviously we couldn't withstand another half of that. 76% total in the first half, but they only ended up at 63% so they should a very human 50% in the second.

Reporter: Why don't you just press everyone all game, every game to force all those turnovers?

Tovarich: Because it's a dumb way to have to play basketball. It's not very realistic. It shouldn't be needed to win a game. Sometimes it isn't, but it's insane the way teams shoot against us and then also outrebound us 41-12 lol.

Reporter: UMBC us 3-11, what do you expect from them in your final pre-conference game?

Tovarich: For them to play like they're 11-3 and shoot like they're robots programmed to make almost every shot and for us to be grossly out of position on every rebound so they can have them all.

Reporter: Will you be less negative and pessimistic when you win more?

          Tovarich: Yes.

Tovarich: Rough night for them, seems like a rough season from their record. I feel their pain. It was nice to see our home court again. I forgot what it looked like while we were away for the last 8 games in a row. Hopefully I remember it when we come back in 2 1/2 weeks after 4 more away.

                Reporter: Is this a rivalry?

Tovarich: We happen to be in the same state. I'm not so sure that matters that much. Seems like an infrequently played game. I just wanted some games in the area. I don't plan to play them next year.

Reporter: Who else in the area do you want to play?

Tovarich: We'll probably go for a home and home with Loyola. Towson still owes us one here once we have their required prestige.

                Reporter: What's gotten into Wiley?

Tovarich: No idea. He's on fire behind the arc and we needed every one of them last game to keep up with the robots from Chattanooga. Didn't need them so much tonight, but it's fun to watch.

Reporter: What percentage do you think you shoot when you're fouled?

Tovarich: 10%? Seems like we're in capable of finishing with some contact.

Reporter: You're having the same kind of road woes as last year. Why do you think that is?

Tovarich: We keep getting younger I guess. Or that team unity thing :deep eye roll:

Reporter: Are you ok coach? You look like you're seizing.

Tovarich: I'm great. Hopefully we're not mathematically eliminated from the 1-seed by the time we get home.

Tovarich: Both teams shot the lights out. It wasn't a real fast-paced game, or that would have been really high scoring. People just plain didn't miss much. 26 total rebounds in a game is low. Usually we allow more than that.

Reporter: Do you think you solved any of the road problems?

Tovarich: No. The fixers simply didn't get to this one.

Reporter: So that's why you won?

Tovarich: We shot great at 3's, that's why we won. Percentages were similar, we just took a lot more 3's and they didn't do too well at the line.

Reporter: Did all the previous road experience help you in this one?

Tovarich: Maybe. We're almost halfway through the season, so everyone's gaining some experience. The road problems eventually got better last season too. Still a young team, still growing. Ideally it'll be a young team for a few years once some better recruits start showing some interest.

Tovarich: Thank you turnovers I guess, or we'd have lost to another 60% shooting team. It's lame it has to be that way though.

Reporter: Maybe your hyper-aggressive defense causes some of the easy makes?

Tovarich: They make them anyway. Pressing occasionally, double teaming people are necessary to force some turnovers. Whenever any team we play shoots, I pretty much assume it's going in. Occasionally we run into a UMBC or a Citadel who can't hit anything, but it's ultra rare.

Reporter: 7 wins out of 8, have you solved whatever problems you were having early?

Tovarich: No. It's the world's easiest schedule probably. Binghamton's 3-12, Savannah State's 2-16, Citadel's 1-13, Alabama A&M's 3-14, Longwood's 1-17, Chattanooga's 3-11. Missouri State, Delaware State, Morgan State and UMBC at 5 and 6 wins is the crowning achievement of our season. And I'm still upset at the St. Francis and FAMU games. NJIT too. Given how we're supposedly better and our easy schedule, I'd say we should be like 13-2.

Reporter: So you're just playing bad teams?

Tovarich: We're a bad team. We're playing level competition. We hung in there with Villanova, but that's not a team you see in conference, so it only does so much to get you ready for it. Playing level competition prepares you for what you'll spend more of your season playing.

Tovarich: Thrilled with the comeback. I thought the way they started that we were done for early.

Reporter: Have you ever seen a team make their first 12 shots of a game, 7 of which were 3's?

Tovarich: Somehow I feel like I've probably seen that done to us before.

Reporter: Why did you wait until 28-14 to finally call a timeout?

Tovarich: Because I was too mesmerized by the amazingness to even think about it. Then when I was able to snap out of it for a second and come back to earth, I figured I better call a timeout, get someone tight on the PG, start some pressing and emphasize a little defense.

Reporter: Why did Tyson start at PG?

Tovarich: Some kind of error, probably by an assistant if I had to guess. When Montrimas got dinged up in the last game, it seemed to reset the lineup somehow. We caught it quick and fixed it.

Reporter: Usually you complain your guys can't make a layup. Are you pleased with how they did tonight?

Tovarich: Yeah, 14/17 is more what I expect.

                      Reporter: You expect 80%?

Tovarich: Maybe not quite expect 80%, but I expect a lot better than the sub 50's I often get. Had to keep up with all their 3's somehow.

Reporter: After they started 7/7 on 3's and 12/12, they finished 2/12 and 13/31 respectively, did you do anything different to change it?

Tovarich: Just the things I mentioned earlier. Forcing the turnovers was the main thing. We shot fairly well in the first half too and then we all turned incompetent in the second half. Funny how that all seems to happen to everyone, weird.

Tovarich: The outside shooting was generally bad from both teams, that kinda killed the percentages but I think both team's big guys scored well in the paint. We broke the press well and scored most of the time and Montrimas suddenly knows how to shoot from 2 feet without fear of the air touching him.

Reporter: Even without the press, the big guys are getting more shots and you're shying away from the 3's a little more, is that a philosophy change?

Tovarich: A little bit, now that they're making some. I can only sit and watch a few point blank misses a game. If they'll continue being a little tougher in the paint, then we'll give it to them some more. We're not as 3-dependent as last year, so I don't mind mixing it up some.

Reporter: Basically everyone on the bench is unhappy, even though they're getting relatively decent minutes, why do you think that is and do you anticipate more departures?

Tovarich: Yeah, it's looking that way. I guess because they started last year and are back, they think they're entitled to start again, but we're a meritocracy and the better players are the new ones so they'll play more. Popovic and Tyson are SR's so they'll be gone anyway. Honestly if McFadden and Bright want to leave, I won't lose any sleep over it. I'd like Krleski to stick around and shoot me some 3's next year. But it seems like they tasted the starting 5 and now that's all that's good enough for them.

Reporter: You're back home against the only other winning team in the conference, how big is that one?

Tovarich: Yeah, home, where is that? We've had 1 home game in 70 days. Howard's in the mix for the 1 seed in the MEAC tournament, which is all I'm worried about getting so they're all big because you can't lose more than 3-4.

Tovarich: That was some rough shooting from both teams. Had to be hard for the 383 fans to watch. It was closer than it looks until the last 9 minutes or so when we suddenly started hitting shots. It's hard to imagine winning by that much when we started 1/10 with 6 point blank misses and missed our first four 3's.

Reporter: I guess whatever Wiley was on earlier has worn off?

Tovarich: Rough day for him for sure. Walcott was just 0-4 on 3's last game and he was 7-15 today. It's such a random sport. And we're young, so we're due to have some inconsistency.

Reporter: Montrimas looked afraid of "getting hit with air" as you said again.

Tovarich: Yeah, I don't know how a 6'10" guy gets blocked by the rim on a layup. Most of our players probably forgot what our home court looks and feels like, so hopefully they were just confused that we're not in a hotel again and will get in a rhythm.

Reporter: It's you and Hampton at the top of the standings, so how far might this next game go in deciding the regular season championship?

Tovarich: We'll see them twice, so this one's important, but that late one will be the big one, especially since it'll be on the road. They're 5-12 but they played a killer schedule I see, so that's probably why they're doing well in the MEAC. We're all a lot less scary than Arizona, Arizona State, Alabama, Cincinnati, Kentucky, Oregon, Penn State, Temple and UCLA.

Tovarich: They must have a great halftime speech. We got to the line for 11 FT's in the 1st half and just 2 in the second. Amazing they suddenly stopped fouling and we still couldn't make a layup or much of anything in the second half. Usual 60% for them. Great win for them I guess.

Reporter: Why do you think you finished the game 2-15 shooting with 5 missed layups, 2 of which were on breakaways?

Tovarich: Must be their superior team unity. How do you make a layup when there's some more experienced player 3 feet away from you? We were too in awe of their togetherness. They start 4 JR's, so next year, they ought to go 31-0

Reporter: Why do you think the refs called the second half so different from the first?

Tovarich: Great question. Let me know if anyone ever finds one of them to ask.

Reporter: Usually getting the starting bigs in foul trouble gets some lesser players on the court, but none of the ones off the bench missed a single shot. Did you underestimate them?

Tovarich: Must have. Our bench didn't do much of anything.

Tovarich: Thought we were in good shape 58-50. I guess all we did there was unleash some atomic supermen.

Reporter: Why do you think they went on a 21-6 run from that point?

Tovarich: Well, they shot 63% so that's amazing for a 5-11 team. Incredible they've lost to much of anyone. We suddenly went 3-13. We were +16 in turnovers, +12 in shots and we were barely even in it at the end there somehow LOL.

Reporter: You were also outrebounded over 2-1.

Tovarich: Another incredibly amazing thing a 5-11 team did.

Reporter: What do you have to do to turn it around?

Tovarich: Continue to slowly and patiently acquire team unity, the key to the universe.
