Tovarich: Luckily they played like a 14-15 9 seed in the second half. My cardiologist probably wouldn't let me deal with another half like the first. I don't know how we withstood the stretch where they scored 7 possessions in a row and we missed 7 layups in a row.

Reporter: If your team can't make a layup, why not try something else?

Tovarich: Because it's a layup. I know someone's standing near us while we attempt the layup, but it's a layup. It should be executed far more frequently than we manage. They should have kept pressing, it seemed like we were banned from making shots against the press. We got their starting C 2 fouls in 2 minutes. Depth is supposed to matter. It should then be easier to score on the backup. And somehow it wasn't really.

Reporter: You always say your goal is to be hyper aggressive and go for steals, you forced 21 turnovers, how do you feel about the defense?

Tovarich: Tremendous. The press was moderately effective, but a lot of that was half court passes we stole too.

Reporter: How about your guard fouling out?

Tovarich: I've never seen a guy get called for 5 ticky tack reach in fouls. Luckily of all the people on the floor for it to be, it's best it was him. I can't lose Stivers or Tamayo but it seemed like the refs were determined to foul him out on anything they could find.

Reporter: Next up is the Cajuns. You had a pretty easy time with them with both games in the regular season. Does that mean anything here?

Tovarich: No. Their season is on the line and even when it's not, we get some superhuman performances. I expect them to do the same.

Reporter: You're ranked in the top 5 by the media, but only 20 by the coaches. How do you feel about that?

Tovarich: The coaches are probably more accurate, but that seems like a crazy disparity.

Tovarich: It was nice to have a routine, easy game. As usual, I wish I could take credit for them shooting 36%, but I've been around this game long enough to know that it wasn't us. Rebounding was frustrating. Finishing in the paint was frustrating. All the usual stuff.

Reporter: Do you think you have a shot at 1 seed?

Tovarich: I think that would be laughable. I would love to be a 1 seed, maybe get a slightly easier 2nd round game, but I think that would be a joke if the committee did that. The only team we beat that looks headed to the tournament is Mississippi State. Texas struggled in the Big 12. UConn beat us and they finished dead last in the Big East. Cal lost 19. Some of those other OOC games, Sam Houston State, Kennesaw State, George Washington, Liberty all lost at least 17 games. We have no particular SOS other than 23-9 Mississippi State and 22-9 Greensboro that we got to play in St. Mary's' tournament.

Reporter: How important is tomorrow's game knowing you're in the tournament either way, but their entire postseason hinges on winning tomorrow?

Tovarich: Yeah, obviously we know we're in, so it'll be less intense for us. And that might play in our favor.

Reporter: You only played Atlantic once in the regular season. What can you take from that game to use tomorrow?

Tovarich: I don't even remember that game, so not much.

Reporter: Any big pep talks planned for tomorrow?

Tovarich: No, I've used a lot of those trying to keep Magley happy. We'll save what big speeches I have left for the 2nd round of the NCAA's.

Reporter: So you're not using them to keep Ryan?

        Tovarich: No.

Reporter: And you're just assuming you don't need them for the 1st round?

Tovarich: If it turns out I needed them for a 15 seed, then we weren't going to do anything in the 2nd round anyway where we'll likely be out-talented by whatever 7 seed we draw.

Tovarich: Surprisingly easy win. We haven't had many of those lately.

Reporter: You never once full court pressed, which is not something we've seen since back before conference play. Was it just because it was unnecessary?

Tovarich: I wasn't going to do it at all unless we got down 3 scores. I think more than anything I needed to know if we could win just playing 40 minutes (28) of straight-up half-court basketball. I don't want to become dependent on pressing when we're giving up 65% shooting to our opponents and can't keep up. 11 forced turnovers without it is a nice number and we still played great defense. They had a rought shooting night that I'm sure we didn't cause, and part of that was their quick firing the last 5 minutes there where it was one pass and fire it up ASAP.

Reporter: You said you didn't care about winning the Sun Belt tournament, do you feel differently now?

Tovarich: No, unless that gets us a 1 seed. I still think that would be laughable, but I guess the rules require me to take it.

Reporter: Do you have a preference on where you play?

Tovarich: I don't think there's any way to know the locations in advance. That seems like something that should be made public beforehand, so I have no idea where the hosts are, so no preference.

Reporter: How about an opponent preference?

Tovarich: I just want a nice easy win in the 1st round, and then I suspect in the 2nd round, we'll already be the underdog. Just give us whoever, wherever.

Reporter: How important is getting a tournament win since you're 0-2 with 2 blowouts in your career thus far?

Tovarich: It's important mainly to avoid losing to a 15 or 16 seed first thing. It's not about me. These guys know they're better than the thumping we got from UCLA last year, and I'm sure they're eager to go prove it, but winning the 1st round doesn't prove that. Beating a good, likely power program in the 2nd round will do that.

Tovarich: It's a win I guess, but it wasn't pretty. It wasn't inspiring and it needs to get a lot better in 2 days to beat North Carolina.

Reporter: You had an unusually high 9 turnovers, is that concerning?

Tovarich: Yeah, we forced 16 and had 9 and we never pressed. They never stopped pressing so it was a helter-skelter game, too fast at times for either teams good really.

Reporter: Just nine 3's attempted and only 2 made? Are you feeling ok?

Tovarich: Yeah, it was hard to get into a half-court set against the press and we had a lot of transition baskets from all the turnovers too. We had a big advantage down low, so we took advantage of that, got their C in foul trouble early and then took advantage of the bench. We'll need a lot more 3's in the next round.

Reporter: What do you know about North Carolina?

Tovarich: I don't know how they're 20-13 with their talent. We'll need a lot of hot shooting, a lot of luck, a lot of help from the refs most likely. I don't know why they underachieved other than they're young, like we are. Looks like just 1 SR and no JR's on the roster, so they're crazy talented to already be rated as high as they are.

Tovarich: I think it became apparent very early in the game that the usual patterns were emerging. Excessive offensive rebounds for them. We didn't make a 3 in the first half. 0-7. We improved to 2-11 in the 2nd half. We shot 0% when we had a chance to tie or take the lead. Had a great look as time expired after they scored. It hit the rim about 4 times and rattled out, predictably. I knew we'd miss. We missed every other tying shot, many of which were layups. You could see it all coming. +17 turnovers, +17 shots and that was just to have a change, although not really, to maybe heave in a 3 as time expired to go to overtime.

Reporter: You usually claw your way back and win all these games where you claim to know the patterns of the game, why not today?

Tovarich: Because this team is insanely good, way better than we are even. But after about 15 missed layups, you can just tell. When you can't hit a 3, you can just tell. When you get a miss, but they just keep getting it back until they score, you can tell. When they score 100% of the time you're within a score, you can tell. But that team's way better than their seed and they're quite a bit more talented than we are.

Reporter: So, will you be expecting a power job offer or you'll be back?

Tovarich: I don't know. We'll see who calls. No follow ups to that.
