Tovarich: Press conference time. Let me avoid all the questions I can here: I have put together the following schedule, not that it matters because no matter how many good teams I schedule, none of them play like they do in the tournament but we'll throw the young team into the fire and see what they can do. I realize we may head into that conference opener 3-8 before we destroy Denver, who didn't fire their clown coach, but I still expect to do well in the Sun Belt.

Tovarich: The depth chart is going to fluxuate. There's a lot of very evenly fought battles here and we'll see who is better at what and what situations fit them better:

Tovarich: I have a scholarship available despite having no seniors. I think I may have cut a recruit somewhere last year. Who remembers? Not me. The one scholarship will be to get the best PG we can find to replace Galbreath the following year. I kept recruiting assistant. There was no better recruiting assistant available. I replaced tape guy with Winston-Salem State coach, so he is the new tape guy. Yes, I turned down DePaul, which was the only power job available.

Tovarich: 1-0, as we should be.

Reporter: You don't seem excited coach.

                  Tovarich: Lot to work on.

Reporter: Would you like to elaborate on that?

Tovarich: Happily. The so-called starters got outscored 55-27 by the bench. We let some average center playing at Eastern Kentucky, the obvious lesser half of this state, get 15 rebounds and block us 5 times. We should be dominating down low against them, and we didn't. I know I don't have a Tamayo kinda 3-point shooter anymore, but I was hoping it would go better than that. Everyone was kinda disappointing. I scheduled this cupcake school so I could get to see some of the new people and what they can do and I ended up relying on the new people to put the game away when the starters failed to. I know we ended up with 43 rebounds, which is a high for my career but they missed 27 3's so we should have statistically outrebounded them, but it didn't feel that way because of their center. The big guys are still soft. We cover up a lot of this stuff with 3-point shooting, but nothing about today's 3-point shooting encouraged me.

Reporter: Can that all be chalked up to team unity coach?

Tovarich: Sure, why not. Even though we're starting 3 JR's and 2 SO's, you'd think it would be higher than it is.

Reporter: You said the depth chart would be fluid. Will you start some different people next game?

Tovarich: Maybe. Lots of very evenly skilled players on this roster. It's a bit easier to have a gap between the A team and the B team, and it's quite blurred with this team. We'll mix and match and see what works. I guess it's best we started with an easy opponent, because I don't think that would have gone well against a real team, which we now play a lot of.

Tovarich: Well, didn't really expect to win that, especially how we started. Their press caused us problems early, and Riley isn't here to break it so easily for us. Pawlak doesn't have his speed. Jack was rough trying to drive it in. Suotamo wasn't allowed to make a shot. Luckily Shehan did, and we started getting some fouls on the drives eventually. I'm sure Roy is upset with the FT disparity, though probably 9 of those were at the end when they were intentionally fouling. Luckily they were sloppy with the ball. Shocking for having a SR PG who could score at will. The ideal offense for them was obviously for him to just not pass.

Reporter: They say teams who press don't like to be pressed back. Did you feel that was the case today?

Tovarich: It seems like a bad strategy for a team who only wants to use 8 players. There's a reason we never pressed my first season @ Eastern Shore unless we were desperate. It gets everyone tired and you risk getting in foul trouble. Even when we weren't pressing, their main offensive philosophy was just to rush everything and play as fast as possible and it lead to a lot of turnovers on their part, also a bad strategy for a team that apparently doesn't trust the end of the bench. They start 2 FR, and they were some of the turnovers. I don't think we got that many from pressing.

Reporter: Have you ever seen such a long period of basketball with no stoppages?

Tovarich: That must have been like 7 minutes. We were slowing it down a little because we had enough of a lead that I felt comfortable killing some time, but everyone on the floor was exhausted there at the end. I had to leave the B team in for the final 1:46 because the starters were all huffing and puffing there.

Reporter: Did you rebound better than you expected?

Tovarich: Probably, only -6 is good by our standards. If this were the tournament though, we'd have been -26.

Reporter: Do you expect to be ranked now?

Tovarich: I don't know. That's not really important.

Reporter: Are you disappointed in the Pre-season NIT field?

Tovarich: Very. Not a single ranked team. I didn't sign up to play Butler and Brown and then some mediocre unranked power schools like Washington State or Seton Hall.

Tovarich: Basketball is such an easy sport when you get rebounds. It's not a concept I'm very familiar with, but having an opponent shoot maybe a little below average and not having to worry about constant putbacks is nice. It makes you feel like you don't need to be hyper aggressive going for steals because you know they'll shoot 65% and outrebound you by 25.

Reporter: How long will Suotamo be out?

Tovarich: If my team's medical doctor is more competent than my assistants, I am told 6 days he'll be feeling the effects, but he can probably go. We may not need much from him against Brown, so we'll have him keep it light in that game if things go as they should.

Reporter: You could play 5 games in 5 days next week if you beat Brown.

Tovarich: Yeah, it would be nice to know exactly when the semifinals of this pre-season NIT thing were, so I'd know not to schedule anything around that but now I know that for the future.

Reporter: Do you worry your team will be tired?

Tovarich: Not at all. These young kids can play 5 games in 5 days like it's nothing. They won't start the game tired from the day before, or 4 days before. You can be in Hawaii one night and Maine the next and they're great. What a world we live in eh?

Reporter: You hoped Lewis could make 3's like Tamayo used to. How'd you assess his rough start?

Tovarich: 2/13 is not great, but Li hit a lot of 3's tonight, so I just need it work for one of them. The B team is overperforming on 3's so far from what you would expect, so it's all pretty random and we'll plug in people, but there's no one on this team who gets to keep shooting 3's when they're 0-9 like Tamayo would have. There's not much of a difference between starter and coming off the bench with the depth on this team, so I'll pull the plug in a close game on someone shooting that badly.

Reporter: What kind of experimenting will you try against Brown then?

Tovarich: We respect all our opponents equally. (wink)

Suotamo and Shehan out together was the next experiment, but we can't do that now, so I'm not sure what else we'll try. Zoellner will have to fill in with some minutes the next two games, which may be an issue with Texas Tech, but I don't expect it to be tomorrow. Now because I said that, Brown will probably outrebound us and make it close.

Tovarich: That was pretty ugly for a while. The big guys seemed cursed in the first half. None of them could make a shot it felt like. No one could rebound for a while it felt like. We shot poorly to start. Brown stayed with us in that one for too long. Eventually things went how they should, but a lot of things to work on as usual.

Reporter: At one point, you were being outrebounded 21-14 and you looked baffled. What changed for you to outrebound them 22-3 the remainder of the game?

Tovarich: I have no idea what changed. Partly they devolved into firing off 3's so fast that we were the only ones around to rebound. Camper did a nice job snagging 3 offensive rebounds. He showed some real toughness getting down, I can't say amongst the trees, because Brown had no trees, but the big guys couldn't rebound, so glad to see he could. They shot poorly on 3's when they got down big, so it probably was fairly even before that, though we did a good job on the offensive glass in the second half too. But it all needs to be a lot better. It felt better against Butler, but I shouldn't be surprised we managed to take a step back there. Butler was likely a fluke.

Reporter: Usually you mix in some press and go for steals in the halfcourt. Why not tonight?

Tovarich: I was going to be as stubborn as I could about that. It's Brown. We ought to be able to just play half court basketball against them, straight up, with no press, no double teams, no trapping, etc and beat them. And they got me close to changing strategies a few times early in the 2nd half when they got it down to one score. Then we went on the 15-0 run when they went cold shooting and things were easy from then on. We'll get back to our usual aggressive defense against Texas Tech and our 5 games in 5 days next week.

Reporter: The B team got as many minutes as the starters. Is that what you anticipate to be the norm?

Tovarich: Maybe. Today the starters just didn't have it. The guys off the bench outscored them 53-32 with the minutes perfectly split. They outrebounded them 22-14. They outdid them in shooting percentage, got to the line more, out assisted them, literally outplayed them in every facet of the game. So they deserved every minute they got. Everyone's so even, we'll have to be constantly re-evaluating who the best 5 are to start.

Tovarich: Not sure what magically changed there all of a sudden. The first 3-4 minutes resembled Marquette in the tournament last year. We were being pressed relentlessly, turning it over, they were 9/13 shooting and grabbed seemingly every rebound and were up 10. We were 3/10 in the paint, with perfect defense every time apparently and no ability to make a layup. Then we started to press back, went on a 13-0 run and then they seemed like they couldn't make a shot. Luckily we shot great from 3, because none of the big guys shot well from 1 foot away. Another team with no depth speeding the game up with the press and playing too fast on offense and turning it over a lot. I don't get the strategy. Li had a Tamayoesque night and he's been tremendous. Got some other guys we need to get going.

Reporter: Eventually you gave up on driving it in once you broke the press. Is that the plan going forward?

Tovarich: I love my 3's, but against the press, you usually can get a decent advantage down low and make their big guy choose who to defend, and usually draw some fouls, but he somehow guarded both our PF and center perfectly while never committing a foul the entire game and we were softer than jello today, couldn't rebound until they started firing 3's before anyone was down court and couldn't finish down low. So at 3/10 I'll stop and accept that what seems like a 2 on 1 advantage is not and we'll work it around for my favorite shots-the 3's. If I knew we'd shoot 50% on 3's the whole time, then I'd have started that strategy from the beginning, but they finally stopped shooting 9/13 so we got into the regular offense and then I saw we were gonna have a good night from the outside.

Reporter: Jack ended up with more minutes than Pawlak. Will you make a change at PF?

Tovarich: Pawlak had a rough night breaking the press, that's probably not a good position for him. Jack seems a little better at it, so in that scenario, Jack's the better option for sure. Suotamo also had a rough night shooting. We have a lot of time to figure that stuff out.

Reporter: Everyone on the roster scored and everyone had a rebound. Is it going to always be a group effort or is it going to often be a committee?

Tovarich: If Li keeps shooting 3's like this, he can be a Tamayo-like guy who averages almost 20. I got a lot of other options if he's off. Options are always good. Jordan's on fire from 3 too and he's only supposed to be a so-so option from out there. Still hope to get Lewis going too.

Reporter: In 5 days you'll play Notre Dame, Missouri, then Washington State or Seton Hall, followed by Georgia and potentially Texas. What do you expect in those 5 days?

Tovarich: I'm sure we're due a clunker in there somewhere, we'll see. I would like to see a team like we see in the second round of the tournament and see if we can figure out what to do. Troy likes to do that to us, but it's tough to get prepared for that kinda scenario when no one seems to play like that in the regular season. I know the tournament is more intense, but gosh, it's like night and day. They play like well-programmed machines. That's what we need to learn how to play against, so I pile up all these big time schools and see if they'll do it, and Texas Tech did it for a few minutes, but they just fell off the face of the earth all of a sudden. Everything's about prepping for the NCAA tournament. It doesn't mean anything to keep piling up all these regular season wins if it doesn't translate later.

Glad WKU held on after that rough start.

There was no new poll until after all those games. I start playing November 1 every year because I can but many teams don't start until the second Friday. I still noticed 3 schools haven't even played a game yet and I've seen a school with 6 already. So WKU is in the polls in time for the marathon of games.

Tovarich: Ugly wins count too, and that was quite ugly.

Reporter: The backups seemed to be quite productive during their lower than usual 8 minutes. Why didn't they get more minutes?

Tovarich: I think most everyone was quite productive, except for Lewis. I think I'm ready to make the switch there and maybe he can start again if he gets going. Turning it over twice to compound his not making shots isn't good enough around here.

Reporter: Are you disappointed in the rebounding?

Tovarich: -11 against them, and 16 by one guy is pretty rough for us. It feels better sometimes but we still have these clunkers.

Reporter: Pawlak has struggled to break the press, but he seemed better today.

Tovarich: For sure, after his first one, which he got blocked by the rim.

Reporter: The happiest you looked was when their alley-oop ended up going out of bounds.

Tovarich: Yeah, that's a first. Usually the ball and the player it's intended for goes through us like we're ghosts and there's nothing we can do to stop it. It was nice to know it's humanly possible for that play not to work just once.
