Tovarich: Obviously a bit of a gulf in talent there, but I guess one of those regional games you should play occasionally.

Reporter: Did you learn anything about your team from that?

Tovarich: Always. Hopefully Stivers just had a bad night from outside and that'll get better, or we need a new plan. There are some FT motions that need to be adjusted because they're just bizarre. We got outrebounded so that's going to continue to be a problem. I think Blankenship couldn't make a shot from less than 15 feet if his life depended on it. Jack and Pawlak broke the press well and finished relatively well. Pawlak is supposed to be a decent 3 point shooter, so the B team could have lots of options if I have a PF that can shoot from the outside, but we didn't get to see any of that today.

Reporter: So what are your expectations for the season?

Tovarich: See how we stack up against a bunch of power opponents and I expect to win the Sun Belt again and we'll give it a try in the NCAA tournament again.

Tovarich: No idea how we won against their 66% shooting and their 9/13 shooting on 3's. We didn't force all that many turnovers. The press was ineffective against their SR PG. Luckily they don't have much of a bench I guess. We didn't rebound all that well. I guess we just accumulated more 3's and more FT's than them although 4 of those FT's were at the end when they were fouling. It's kind of a hard win to explain. Luckily they weren't shooting 3's in the second half like they first. 7/8 at halftime and just 1/5 in the second, but they made everything else it seemed. Great win, but I can't entirely explain how it happened other than we shot enough 3's to overcome it. Thank you Stivers.

Reporter: This is the highest ranked team you've ever beaten, is that your biggest win ever?

Tovarich: I guess the rankings say so, but we're better than them on paper and we were at home. We'll see. It's looking like none of the people I scheduled are panning out again as I see no one on our schedule that's rated higher than us and LSU was the only ranked one. I see we can get Illinois in a tournament here who are rated higher but unranked somehow.

Reporter: What was their press strategy? It wasn't constant, but it was more than just here and there.

Tovarich: That was confusing for me too. They weren't on full blown full court press or we'd have seen it after every score, but when coaches say occasionally it's like 10% of the time maybe. It was like 50-50 with them. I don't know what the rhyme or reason was, but considering how little faith they have in their bench, that doesn't seem wise to me.

Reporter: Will the upcoming CBE Classic be a disappointment if you only end up playing the 2 games?

Tovarich: Probably. More disappointing is Illinois is the best team we may see all season and they're not even ranked, so the benefit of playing them doesn't seem to be there. I don't see how Savannah State's going to beat them, so we'll get a good neutral court test, but indeed, I didn't sign up to just play 2 games. I want more elite opponents in the last two games there, but we'll have to earn those for sure.

I was going to pause for a while after the last season ended but I still had the urge to go for a few more. Between burnout from all the games and college basketball season wrapping up, it's time for a hiatus until the fall. I'll check in on everyone else still going here and there though.

Tovarich: We came out pretty rusty after that long lay off. Good thing we were playing a team that also looked pretty rusty.

Reporter: What are you talking about coach? You just played LSU six days ago.

Tovarich: I don't know, man. That felt like 8 months. I don't know if I went into a coma or something, but that felt like forever ago. I was trying to remember who some of the guys on the bench even were and what they were good at and such.

Reporter: Your FR Suotamo rebounded well and you out-rebounded the opponent. Do you think you're making some progress there?

Tovarich: I doubt it. If we can't outrebound Charleston Southern, then there's just like no hope for that, ever. He scored well too. We were trying to remember how to play basketball, and against the man defense, it seemed like he had an advantage. We didn't shoot well from 3 in the first half, so we had to keep the gameplan simple until we got back into the swing of things.

Reporter: Uhhh, ok, coach, so that "8 month layoff" that caused this rust, do you think you knocked it off for, probably Illinois tomorrow?

Tovarich: We'll see. I think by the end of the game we were back in some rhythm with the subs and the defensive alignments and who can shoot and who can't, etc. Luckily we got pressed a little which was good to remember how to break. We maybe should have used some ourselves, but it never felt necessary. I assume we'll need it tomorrow though.

Can you imagine this interaction at a press conference? LOL. I'm dying.

Tovarich: Obviously being -23 in rebounds in untenable. Even being +15 in turnovers can't make up for that. That team was enormous, not that it mattered. A team of 5 Muggsy Bogues' can probably outrebound us.

Reporter: So, were you rusty coach?

Tovarich: I don't think they shot 60% because we were rusty. I don't think they got rebounds on almost half their own misses from that. We had those problems before.

Reporter: Will this help you in March?

Tovarich: That's the point of scheduling all these types of games and tournaments. We have less talent than whatever 8 seed we're going to see in the 2nd round and we aren't doing so great in the tournament so far. We'll see a lot more good teams like this. That team's better on paper and yet aren't even ranked somehow.

Reporter: So you're giving yourself a 1 seed already?

Tovarich: Unless we really bomb a lot of these OOC games like Iowa and Indiana and such, yes. The Sun Belt is weak again and we should cruise through most of those. That's why I loaded up the OOC schedule.

Reporter: What will you do differently against the next big school with much bigger players?

Tovarich: Something different. I don't know yet.

Reporter: What do you want to get out of the Maui Invitational?

                Tovarich: 3 wins.

Reporter: Are you disappointed in the field?

Tovarich: A little. There's lots of big schools in there, but Arizona, Cincinnati, Oklahoma, all unranked somehow. I'm sure they'll play like a ranked team though, if Dartmouth doesn't first.

Tovarich: Well, I'm not one to tell the opposing coach how to coach, except for the 10 or so previous times I've done that, but leaving Tamayo open all the time against the zone was probably something that should get him fired.

Reporter: Do you know about 2-point shots coach?

Tovarich: About as much as they know about defending 3-point shots.

                  Reporter: What changed at halftime?

Tovarich: We were a little less embarrassingly bad at rebounding, and they refused to defend Tamayo. Dartmouth coach ought to look up man to man defense.

Reporter: Pawlak hasn't made a FT this year. What can you do about that?

Tovarich: He practically shoots underhand, so I have no idea what release point he should use. We probably need to just overhaul that whole thing. It's absolutely broken as of now.

Reporter: Just 1/5 at the line. Is that a concern?

Tovarich: That we only got 5 or that we only made 1? I don't expect to get many when we take 37 3's. Only making 1 isn't great, but Capel, like Pawlak has some bizarre side motion where he's leaning more than the Tower of Pisa.

Reporter: Can you take anything away from the game with Arizona last season and use it this season?

Tovarich: Absolutely not. I don't remember the slightest thing about that game.

Tovarich: I'd like to think I made some awesome halftime adjustments, but I can't take much credit. I don't know why they shot so poorly in the second half.

Reporter: What did you think about the rhythm of the game?

Tovarich: It was simultaneously helter-skelter, and yet choppy because of the refs needing their camera time. We got lucky with a few deflected passes, which normally I say seem to go 90% against us, or we'd have had more turnovers. They were totally out of control in transition at points trying too hard to force the ball down the court, which is baffling considering their lack of depth. Yet, we got called for 8 fouls in the first half I think.

Reporter: Speaking of fouls, what gave you the confidence in Riley to leave him in when he picked up 2 fouls in under 3 minutes?

Tovarich: I wouldn't call it confidence. It's more a lack of concern. I don't care if he fouls out.

Reporter: Did the refs over-calling of the game cause you to go down low more often in the second half?

Tovarich: Very much so, also let some of the guards wander in there and drive it in too. They don't like to play many players so getting to the bench is obviously something that's not good for them. Getting their starting center 2 fouls early was helpful.

Reporter: Why do you think it is Arizona has such a lack of depth?

Tovarich: I don't know what their recruiting has been like since Lute retired, but if they'd like to hire me, I can fix it.

Tovarich: Tough loss on the lay-in with 2 seconds to go. I thought that 19-5 run that put us up 4 was good enough, but we didn't cover the guy in the corner on the in bound pass and he ran right in for an easy winner.

Reporter: Would you have preferred Riley hold the ball on the offensive rebound down 1 with 12 seconds to go rather than going right back up?

Tovarich: Nah, we already had the chance to hold it until the buzzer, and Tamayo missed. Getting 2 offensive rebounds there was lucky. I'm not sure we could have gotten lucky again. It's an easy thing in retrospect to change, but taking the lead was a good result. We just needed to cover the in bound pass better.

Reporter: What will you change between now and next week when you play Oklahoma again?

Tovarich: Probably nothing. There's a good chance nothing that happened tonight will play out the same next week.

Reporter: Is the tournament a disappointment for not winning it?

Tovarich: Ideally you win it, but we're racking up some serious strength of schedule. We're getting experience in close game, and against good teams. I don't know how they're unranked at 5-0 but they're a good team. If we end up better for it, then it's not a disappointment.

Reporter: But you didn't get a trophy in either of your tournaments.

Tovarich: I've already made some space in the cabinet for the Sun Belt championship trophy and the banner's ready to hang up.

Tough loss, but from a meta point, it's great to have close games like that. Learn and grow.

Tovarich: Nice to get them back for Maui.

Reporter: What did you do differently?

Tovarich: Not a lot. We were home this time. We got tighter defensively on some of the 3-point shooters who hurt us last week. So we got them down to about 30% instead of a little over 50% and that was pretty much the difference. Mostly that game went about the same otherwise.

Reporter: They only played 7 players and seem to suffer from a lack of depth. Would you like to openly lobby for them to hire you too like Arizona?

Tovarich: I wouldn't take that job.

Reporter: The in-season recruiting window is coming up. Will there be any signings?

Tovarich: It's not looking like it. We'll be in some recruiting battles to the end of the season most likely.

Tovarich: I haven't told another coach how to coach in almost two weeks, but has no one watched the tape of the team who play zone against us? Like, are people using the Johnny Manziel philosophy on watching tape?

Reporter: Was that a 1-2-2 zone or a box and 1?

Tovarich: It was hard for me to tell too, but that's a bad plan. They were lucky Tamayo was relatively cold shooting tonight.

Reporter: You looked frustrated at the rebounding in the first half.

Tovarich. Extremely, as usual. 9 offensive rebounds they had. We got the starting center in foul trouble and got him sent to the bench for the rest of the half, and I thought that would get better, but even one of their 5 different PG's wandered in and got his own putback. We couldn't make a layup in the first half, and they missed a lot too, but they always got it back. I yelled until I was blue in the face about rebounds the entirety of the game, and it never really was too good.

Reporter: Some of those FT's were at the end, but the team seemed to do a good job getting to the line.

Tovarich: Yeah, we must have brought our Sun Belt refs with us. But, them fouling Stivers on a 3 with .1 to go before the half was one of the dumber decisions I've ever seen. Those 3 FT's he nailed were huge going into the half.

Reporter: You said there would no real news for recruiting, but you got some huge recruits.

Tovarich: Yeah, I don't know why Sid Jordan had no other scholarship offers. Boston College was ahead of us the whole time. Offer him and he's theirs. How does a 5* 16th OVR recruit not get an offer from anyone besides Western Kentucky? Baffling. A 4* SF too, another top 10 at his position and top 50 player overall. No other offers? Crazy.

Reporter: What will you do with your last scholarship?

Tovarich: We'll aim for a PF. We've offered someone. Long way to go in recruiting him.

Tovarich: That was an odd game of no defense and yet a lot of defense. Both teams got a good number of turnovers. 9 for us is really high. Forcing 13 is solid. Yet, both teams shot 60%. We shot more 3's and made more and did better on FT's and that was about the difference.

Reporter: Why did you turn it over so much?

Tovarich: Capel was a little sloppy against the press late. Both teams were trying to push it in transition and it wasn't there.

Reporter: Were you thinking you could win down 20-12 early?

Tovarich: Missed layups, bad rebounding, etc. Every tipped pass going back to them. It felt like things were conspiring against us for a bit. Even after halftime, they jumped out 7-0 after we missed a couple layups. The first few minutes of each half were rough, and then we shot the lights out. Just one of those things I guess.

Reporter: You're going back to Eastern Shore next, what kind of reception do you expect?

Tovarich: I expect all 25 fans who remember me to give me a lengthy standing ovation during my 5 minute long video tribute on the scoreboard.

Reporter: They don't have a video board.

Tovarich: I expect them to buy one just for my return.

Tovarich: Such an emotional night. The video tribute to me was just great. The excitement on the players' faces who were here back then. The crowd was thrilled to see me.

Reporter: Uhh, coach? None of that happened.

Tovarich: I watched it in my mind. It was a lot of images of me calling timeout trying to keep my 2-3 competent players rested and lots of reaction shots of me wondering why we can't get a rebound.

                                Reporter: Are you serious coach?

Tovarich: No, as I expected, no one cared I was back. The arena was still half empty even with a ranked team coming in, which will likely never happen again in the history of this school. We may have been busy watching my imaginary tribute video for a while there. It was a pretty listless beginning of the game. I never coached any of the players on this roster. I know I recruited the two big guys, because they're by far the two best players on the roster. The 3 walkons were all here, but I redshirted them all.

Reporter: You seemed to make it a point to get the ball down low early and often.

Tovarich: Well, the PF and C are the only two remotely decent players they have, so partly, get them in foul trouble, which we did with Finn. We let Weidemann get 3 blocks on the first 4 shots, but Suotamo is a FR and playing against two talented seniors is a good test for him. He was so-so. Obviously this game is huge for them to have a top 20 team there. We looked thrown off by the tiny half-filled arena of apathetic fans and curtains blocking the exit doors right behind the basket. We may not be a big program, but we're definitely evolved beyond those kinds of atmospheres. Luckily we shot well, but they hung in there and the point of these kinds of games is to get the backups and 3rd stringers more minutes, and we didn't really accomplish that today. I mean, that's what most of conference season is for, but Jack is getting kinda whiny, so it would have been nice to get him in, but they fought hard to stay in it. They gave us a better fight than Arizona and Indiana did.

Reporter: Speaking of conference games, you said you already ordered the championship banner. Do you not expect a fight from anyone?

Tovarich: There's always someone who treats it like their Super Bowl and they play out of their minds. But we're 35-1 the last two regular seasons with a 1 point loss to Troy, which I haven't forgotten. 18-0 isn't maybe a given, but it's very possible. That's why I threw Kansas State and Purdue in there during the breaks in games to get us some more frequent close games and help out the SOS.
