Tovarich: Not a lot of defense in that game. Everyone got in the scoring column again. Nice to win against an annoying style.

Reporter: Did you feel you matched their intensity?

Tovarich: Of course not, they're playing to continue their season, so they came out firing and they were up 6-8. The half court trap was extra annoying today. Even Galbreath turned it over two possessions in a row at one point and gave them 6 points in about 15 seconds.

Reporter: What adjustments did you make against that?

Tovarich: None, really. They speed the game up a lot, not just with the half court trap but they're in very tight on the ballhandler trying to get 5 second calls so you have to constantly pass it around to avoid that. I tried to avoid that and we let them dictate the speed by speeding up ourselves and we drew a lot of fouls because of that. Just 3 3's attempted in the first half, only 1 made, has to be a career low for me.

Reporter: So what changed in the second half?

Tovarich: Not a ton. They just missed a few shots. I got tired of watching them shoot 62% in the first half, so we pressed them back a lot and we forced 10 turnovers to get the lead. Since they were going to score anyway, I don't care that we gave them a handful of uncontested layups. I took the press off at half as I always do and never needed to bring it back. Didn't create a single turnover in the second half, but they didn't get into their trap a lot. They bombarded us there in the last 2 minutes with 3 or 4 3's to get it down from 20, but they were in full court press by then, not trap, and we can run circles around that and drew a bunch more fouls.

Reporter: Was it weird to be the home team and wear your white jerseys against them in their arena?

Tovarich: Yes, that's all very confusing. We're the higher seed so we're the 'home' team and get to use the home locker room. It looks exactly 100% like our locker room anyway, but it's rather confusing to be the home team on the road team's court. We seemingly got 100% of the tickets and brought our mascot. All very bizarre.

            Reporter: Troy tomorrow

Tovarich: Of course. 4th year in a row we've run into Troy in the tournament. Hopefully they don't blow us out by 20 this year.

Tovarich: I don't know how you beat a team who shoots 60% both halves. All 11 of our FT's were in the first half, then the refs just decided to stop calling fouls. 8 blocks seems low. I bet it was more. Couldn't rebound as usual. Everyone went cold shooting in the second half except for Suotamo who started 1-8. Whatever.

Reporter: Joe Lunardi had you as a 2 seed. Do you think you'll be dropped to a 3 now?

Tovarich: Sure, probably. Whoever we play in the second round, regardless of how they seed us likely has more talent than us. We'll just have to see how we match up with them.

Reporter: Do you think the Sun Belt was stronger this year than previously?

Tovarich: It's an older league. Troy starts 4 seniors, and that team unity stuff, sometimes it's like the most important thing in the world, and this league starts a lot of seniors, us included. The RPI only has us 12th I think, which isn't as good as previous years, but I think it's tougher for sure. We may have 3 teams in now if Lunardi is correct with FIU being in and then Troy or Little Rock get the auto bid.

Quite, looks like they had an awful non-conference season collectively. Iowa finished 11-7 in the conference, but only 18-13 overall, Wisconsin was 10-8 but 15-16 overall. Penn State actually finished 6th but was 24-10 so they made it in. The bottom 5 all finished under .500 overall. Michigan State and Illinois hogged a lot of the wins and everyone else was pretty even except for Purdue.

Then Texas A&M finishes tied for 2nd in the Big 12 but doesn't make it in at 17-12, but 6th place Missouri gets in at 17-12. Similarly in the ACC, Miami ties for 2nd, but at 17-12 doesn't make it in. Virginia goes 7-9 and finishes 9th though and is in comfortably at 20-12.

The SEC only managed 4. The PAC only got a 5th because 10th place Oregon won the tournament, but Cal finished alone in 2nd and is out at 20-12 overall.

The Big East hogged 7 spots. The moderate conferences took a lot of bids, 3 from CUSA, 3 from the Sun Belt, the MAC and WAC each got an at-large too.

Wow, what a mess across those 3 big conferences. Interesting to see the middle get so strong, I hope that makes for an interesting tournament.

Tovarich: Second year in a row for Southern Utah. Despite that being a 1-16 game last year, which means we got worse and they got better, this one must have been easier since we only won by 11 last year, though I can't say I remember much about it. I may be getting old.

Reporter: Did you feel the game was over when you started up 19-4?

Tovarich: No, I've seen enough of those kinds of starts slip away gradually.

Reporter: You usually insult everyone who plays zone against you, would you like to tell Southern Utah coach he's an idiot?

Tovarich: Well, the way we shot against Troy, maybe letting us shoot ourselves into a slump wasn't the worst plan. The 3-2 zone is not one I can remember seeing any time in recent memory, but we shot well tonight.

Reporter: Are you concerned you gave up 16 rebounds to their PF?

Tovarich: Rebounding is always a concern, mainly because I don't know how to fix it. I guess in the 3-2 zone, their two big guys should be closer to the basket than they would be in man where we typically have 4 out, so maybe that was it. No matter who we get in the 2nd round, of course I am concerned we suck at rebounding.

Reporter: Are you rooting for a Niagara upset?

Tovarich: Of course. Marquette, despite the seeds, is better than us as you'd expect every power school in the tournament to be. Despite what our seed always says, we have a high RPI because I try to challenge us in the non-conference, and even though the scheduling often doesn't work out, it should equate to a hard SOS and we end up seeded higher than our talent level says we should be.

Tovarich: I would love to see video of the 11 losses they had. They ran circles around us like the globetrotters. They threw alley-oops from halfcourt so high the camera lost track of it. The press was relentless. I've never been pressed so aggressively for virtually the entire game. 14 turnover by us is by far the worst I've ever seen in a game. They shot it will. 44-17 rebounds is about what I expect. I don't know why we can't rebound. I think we had 1 offensive rebound the entire game. They must have had 15. We deflected so many passes, just for it to go back to them somehow. Not a single assist for Galbreath. Everyone he passes it to missed. It was like a curse somehow to receive the ball from him. We never had a chance. There's no way that team could ever lose a game playing like that, greatest thing I've ever seen. I know they're better than us, but it still feel like everything conspired against us to help a team who couldn't possibly need the help. I don't know why we were the away team. We're the higher seed, even if we don't deserve it, but somehow that seems to matter. Why did they get all the fans? Why isn't my red blob wandering around? It's ridiculous they're the home team.

Reporter: Is this season a disappointment?

Tovarich: Most of my seasons here feel like that. I'm not sure it's humanly possible for me to assemble a team that can compete at that level. We start 3 seniors, so we should have kept getting better every season and we didn't.

Reporter: Big schools came calling last year and likely will this year.

Tovarich: We'll see who calls. There's always another step into the Mountain West/Atlantic 10 kinda schools that are a level up from here, but not a power school. I have to think about whether or not I can accomplish anything here other than plowing over the Sun Belt schools every year and getting killed in the 2nd round by a school with far more talent than I have.

Reporter: If you do come back, what do you expect the starters to look like?

Tovarich: Galbreath obviously will be the PG. Suotamo the center. At SG, we have Lewis from the B team, a 4* I redshirted and a 5* coming in, so that's open. At SF, we have a 4* recruit coming in, and Li from the B team. At PF, we have Pawlak and Jack from the B and C team, and hopefully a 4* coming in. Those 3 spots are all wide open.
