Tovarich: I didn't think I said anything too inspirational or game-changing at halftime, but I'll take all the credit.

Reporter: So, what did you actually change at halftime?

Tovarich: We got tight on a few of their outside shooters. I told them to crash the glass a little. I mean, getting outrebounded 22-7 at halftime, that one's pretty obvious. We did a good job making those numbers look respectable, although I don't know what we did to make them shoot 25% in the second half. They're lucky they hit that 3 with 4 seconds to go or they'd have been in single digits. We slowed it down some the last 5 minutes or so because the tight game turned lopsided all of a sudden.

Reporter: You seemed annoyed with the refs.

Tovarich: It seemed pre-determined Suotamo was going to be in foul trouble the whole game. Every time he breathed on someone, they'd call a foul. We eventually got their starter a 3rd and he sat a lot of the 2nd half as well, but 4 fouls in 9 minutes is crazy. Shehan luckily is also really good. He couldn't put a putback back in to save his life, but he rebounded in the 2nd half, which we couldn't do in the first. Air Force obviously doesn't have the depth we do, so tight calls by the refs can't really hurt us too bad.

Reporter: Cal next. What do you expect from that?

Tovarich: Obviously on paper, they're better than we are. They're battle tested. The PAC-10 has 7 teams seeded 1-4. I see they start 4 seniors, so their team unity is out of this world. There's probably nowhere that we're better than them. It's going to take great effort. We'll go hyper-aggressive on defense and go for a lot of steals, because I can already see the alley-oops from halfcourt coming and shooting 65%. We'll need to find some hot shooters. We're probably sizeable underdogs as we'd be against almost anyone in the 2nd round.

Tovarich: Whew, my favorite way to win a game. Allow 60% shooting, brick every 3 we take, get dominated on the boards and go for steals on every possession.

Reporter: What were you thinking down 7-0 in the first minute?

Tovarich: De ja vu. I was remember Marquette last year. Suotamo's running down the lane and could just dunk it but he decides to finger roll it and miss short, then they go down and bomb a contested 3. The alley-oop from beyond the 3-point lane which I had 3 people in between who couldn't block it was a nice touch too.

Reporter: Despite focusing so much on McCroskey, he piled up the points anyway.

Tovarich: Yeah, we were supposed to double him every time he had it, and we did get him to throw it away a few times, but no matter how tight we were supposed to be on him, he was often open. Their PG too.

Reporter: You didn't give the bench much of a chance.

Tovarich: Nope, wasn't feeling them at all really. Wasn't feeling Li, but they kept leaving him open, like they knew he'd miss and they were baiting me to let him keep shooting. Lewis caught fire in the second half though and shot us out of it. A few big rebounds at the end, Galbreath hitting all 4 FT's at the end was huge. We can usually overcome one off night like Li had. But it took everyone else contributing.

Reporter: You'll likely get UCLA again for the 3rd time in 5 years. Can you match up with them in any way?

Tovarich: They've dominated us both times. We'll have to try the same gameplan as today and hope Li doesn't go 2-13, we can rebound better and they don't shoot 60% but we'll need to be +15 in turnovers and +17 in shots to eek it out like we did today if we're lucky.

Awesome win, and you get Nevada instead of UCLA next round, which is hopefully a good thing.

Tovarich: Well, luckily there are no style points this time of year. First Elite 8 is awesome. I've had teams the last few years I thought could do this who didn't, and I didn't think at the beginning of the year this would be possible for this team, and it's probably because we got lucky playing a 9 seed in the Sweet 16 but I'll take it.

Reporter: What were you thinking when they came out of halftime on a 9-0 run and you didn't score for 3 1/2 minutes?

Tovarich: "I knew that first half was too easy". "I've seen this before". "I wonder what the other coaches say at halftime to do this". "What do they look like UCLA all of a sudden"? "Oh, right, team unity".

Reporter: What caused the ugly shooting for both teams in the second half?

Tovarich: Too much at stake for such small schools I guess. I apologize to everyone who had to watch us shoot 8/26 in the second half. I don't think their percentage was a ton better. We slowed it down a little bit late, but we took more shots in the second half than the first. Just no one besides the big men could make one, and even then, Suotamo missed 3 putbacks in one sequence right there? It was helpless to watch. Luckily they, after their 9-0 start anyway, couldn't shoot much better.

Reporter: You got outrebounded, but several key rebounds gave you a chance to run some clock those last 3 minutes.

Tovarich: Yeah, once I was able to surmise that most of our shots were destined to be missed, we stopped going back up with the putbacks that we were going to miss and held it for another 30. Eventually you learn your lesson.

Reporter: The school made one Final Four over 50 years ago but it was vacated. Does that makes this one a bigger deal?

Tovarich: No. I don't think the teams who have been to 12 care about any of those. The 13th would still be special for them. We'll be big underdogs though to Louisville.

Tovarich: Wow, ummm (laughs). It probably wasn't fun to watch. It was beautiful though lol. It's unbelievable. I kept waiting for the run to come and it finally did, a lot later than I thought. We did a great job dribbling the basketball. We hit just enough 3's, just enough offensive rebounds. We made just enough FT's at the end there. We forced just enough turnovers on all their long passes in desperation to catch up. Sorry for everyone who watched bored on TV wondering why Princeton was on there in Western Kentucky jerseys, but that was likely how it had to be done. My job's not to entertain everyone.

Reporter: What were you thinking up 10-0 in the first 3 minutes?

Tovarich: "Can I start running the clock now"? "Why are we actually getting rebounds? We never do that". "Where's this shot defense been all season"? "Maybe team unity only matters in the regular season".

Reporter: Are you worried going forward about the center's lack of ability to score today?

Tovarich: Not yet. That was a FR and he defensively dominated us. That's a sight I've seen many times where we get pushed around down low. We'll have to see who we get. I guess we don't have to travel since the Final Four is right here in Indy. We'll be big underdogs again. If we can jump out 10-0, then prepare to fall asleep watching again everyone. We'll see if we get that lucky again. We'll slow it down as long as we can, if we can. Hopefully the big men can score better.

Reporter: Will nerves be a factor?

Tovarich: For me or them? Haha. I have no idea. I don't know if when we play well that we're comfortable or when we play poorly it's nerves. I have no idea what to expect. I've been expecting what I saw against Marquette last year. I've been expecting what I've seen UCLA do to us twice, what North Carolina did the one year. And it hasn't come yet. I mean, we even blocked an alley-oop pass from just inside half court. I don't know why teams love to try that against us, though only in tournaments it seems, but finally Galbreath stuck his arms out and blocked one. Normally that goes through us like we're ghosts. I was stunned. I don't even remember what we did on the next possession I was so stunned.

Reporter: You mean after you stood around dribbling for 32 seconds?

                        Tovarich: Yes.

Tovarich: Wow, incredible. Sometimes as coaches we come up with a plan we think is good and is what's best and sometimes we're totally wrong. We tried to slow it down. We were 0-0 for over 3 minutes. We ticked every second we could off and kept it low scoring and it was working. Then they blitz us with a quick 9-0 run in under 2 minutes and it gets us out of that plan and we put the press on and we speed it up and you'd think their SR PG would handle the ball better but we got him to turn it over. We got everyone to turn it over. Second game in a row we blocked an alley-oop. Incredible. The big guys struggled again. They shot 60% but couldn't hold on to the ball. The ultra-aggressive defense worked far better than standing around dribbling the cover off the ball. I was reluctant to do that to such an experienced guard. Stunned it worked. We were down in rebounds 17-5 at half, which was embarrassing. That didn't get a whole lot better in the second half. I am on my way to 250 games in my career and I still don't seem to be able to do anything about that. But we make it work somehow. We go for a million steals a game, and we end up with almost 20, so we get killed on the boards. Maybe that's part of it, I don't really know. Umm, what else? They played a lot of zone in the second half. Left Li and Lewis open for some 3's. That wasn't smart. None of it was as baffling as the plan at the end though. They get the offensive rebound-SHOCKING I know-and the putback to make it a 3 point game, and there's like 40.5 to go? And they play it out, so we of course just fire off a 3 with 1 second to go, and we managed to deflect the outlet pass which just left them with a heave from beyond half court. It hit the rim of course, because I think that happens 100% of the time, 99 at least, but I'd have dragged that out I think, even though they probably were only at 2-3 fouls. I'm not sure what the plan will be for the championship. We made the Louisville strategy of pretending we're Princeton work, and we made that work for a while here too, but then we broke out of our shell and it turned out to be the best thing we could do. We'll have to see who we get on Monday. I don't think I want any part of 36-1 Texas who I see only has a loss @ top 10 Michigan State in OT and only 4 wins by single digits. I was hoping to see them in the Legends Classic. It was probably better we didn't with what all we had going on there. I know we lost to Illinois last season, but I'd take my chances there. Unbelievable we're in the championship. I remain astounded at this team. I guess we're at the point as a program where we don't rebuild, we reload as they say. Just didn't think this would be the team to break through after all our 2nd round problems. Still unbelievable. Oh, so any questions?

Reporter: Thanks coach. We thought you were going to talk forever.

Tovarich: Oops. Looks like we're out of time. See ya'll Monday.

Hahaha, I've definitely done the "waste 30 seconds then take a shot offense". It's miserable but almost worked for me.
