UNC vs NC State is a juicy round 1 matchup that they'd never allow to happen.

Tovarich: LOL, wow. Ummm, I don't know where to start. Has a team ever shot over 70% and lost by double digits? That's insane. Has a team ever advanced in the NCAA tournament while getting 12 rebounds in an entire game? That's also insane. Even I thought the pace of that game was out of hand at times. Their full court press for the entire first half was silly. We destroyed that. We got every big guy on the roster, which sounds like a lot, but they only have like 3, none of which are true centers, in foul trouble, which made Suotamo's first half easy. Jack too was a foul magnet. They shot 75% in the first half though, so we barely even had a lead LOL.

Reporter: Roy Williams is upset at the 24-6 FT disparity. What did you think?

Tovarich: Well, 18 of those were before the half. They never dropped out of the press, they were quite aggressive against Jack and Suotamo when we drove it in. If they know the refs are calling it, they should adjust.

Reporter: You mentioned they had no true center after the 1st round. Did you think that was an advantage for you?

Tovarich: Huge. 3 PF's only on the entire roster, no centers. I remember Duke having only one center, one PF on their roster last year. I don't know what they're doing over there in the ACC with all the guards, but I think even Jay Wright who started 4 guards regularly earlier in his career thinks that's too many.

Reporter: Might there be some national awards for Suotamo coming?

Tovarich: He deserves every award there is. He's tremendous and probably the main reason I stuck it out one more season here.

        Reporter: So...

Tovarich: (interrupting) That's not an invitation to ask where if I'm leaving or where I'll be.

        Reporter: But coach...

Tovarich: Alabama next round, yes. Glad someone asked. I see another roster with no C and only 1 PF. I'm not sure what school of roster management everyone went to or what analytics company every pays to tell them this is a good way to set up a roster, but yikes.

        Reporter: Are you...

Tovarich: (interrupting) Oh look, plane's leaving. We're out of time. Sorry guys.

Tovarich: Over 50% on 3's and a 27-2 FT advantage, I'd say we're rather unbeatable like that. And rebounding, wow. +17 in rebounds, and it's in the Sweet 16 against an SEC school? I don't think we've ever been +17 against anyone, ever. It's a miracle.

Reporter: Is that the shortest team you've ever played?

Tovarich: It has to be, gosh. They're starting a 6'5" SF at the 5 spot against Suotamo? It's no surprise Suotamo dominated scoring and on the boards. Then Kapono the PF, is only 6'7" and we managed to get him in foul trouble too. I don't know how they won 28 games with that roster unless the SEC is like the ACC and doesn't believe in the center either.

Reporter: Can any of this momentum carry over against Oklahoma?

Tovarich: No, it's a brand new game and we may go from 11/21 on 3's to 2/21. Suotamo may not be able to shoot 86% and get 14 FT's. I see Oklahoma is pretty guard heavy and have no PF's, but they have 2 C's at least on the roster, so I suspect we, and by we, I mean our almost one man team Suotamo, will probably have a harder time than he's had the last two games. I'm not sure why no PF on the roster, but that's a less glaring weakness than no C and no starter over 6'7"

Reporter: Did Flores remember how to play basketball and/or did he faint when you put him in?

Tovarich: He made his layup, drew a foul, grabbed a rebound. He shouldn't take it as an invitation to stay, although that's up to you know who, not me.

Reporter: So you've informed the athletic director that you're leaving?

Tovarich: I don't even know where that guy's office is.

            Reporter: So, you haven't?

Tovarich: He knows to leave me alone and not interject himself into the well oiled machine that is the basketball program.

            Reporter: What about the players?

Tovarich: I'm not sure if they know where his office is either.

Indeed, the formula on the game ignores conference affiliation and it's a little bizarre sometimes in the 1st round to see. The juiciness of the Florida-Florida State Elite 8 game is exactly the kind of the thing the committee would go out of their way to try to make happen even though it would usually not work out like this

Tovarich: Wasn't the prettiest game, but pretty doesn't matter. Style points don't matter. Turned into an easy game in the second half with all their turnovers forcing things and both teams missed tons of shots. Rebounding was even enough, FT's were even enough, just turnovers got us through this one.

Reporter: What went into slowing down the game in the second half?

Tovarich: Mainly Suotamo getting a 4th foul with over 10 minutes to go. The less that transpired with him on the bench, the better. Then also, neither team was shooting well, so unless there was a vast turnaround in shooting by them, they had no chance of catching up at the 40% rate they were shooting.

Reporter: Last week Jack had 24 against North Carolina and 0 today, what do you make of his play?

Tovarich: He was just off. It happens. Pawlak was burying 3's, unlike the rest of the roster. Suotamo was doing great, so Jack helped out in some other ways. Rebounding was below average, but he got some. He got some steals, some assists. He wasn't out there hurting the team just because he missed a few shots.

Reporter: How do you keep the team focused amidst rumors of you leaving?

Tovarich: We start 3 seniors. Most of them are leaving if they lose. That's focus enough.

                  Reporter: So are you leaving?

Tovarich: Yes. I'll be leaving this press conference. Then we'll be leaving the locker room and leaving the bus, then the airport.

Reporter: So, Florida State. What do you know of them?

Tovarich: They were like 24-0 before they finally lost. They and us and Marquette were top 4 the entire season, so it makes sense we're here. Their starting 5 is ridiculous. Not a lot of depth with the bigs though. Obviously we'll try to get their center in foul trouble and then it may be rough for them. If we can't do that, we'll need another performance like today from Pawlak. Everyone else will have to be better.

Way different from last year, with so many 1 seeds in the Final Four.

Tovarich: Obviously a disappointing performance, both offense and defense. Can't overcome your best player going 6/20. You can't overcome a team like that shooting 20/27 in the second half, and 7/9 on 3's. It's probably a miracle we kept it that close.

Reporter: When someone is shooting that poorly, why not bench him and go for someone else?

Tovarich: He's the only reason we're here. Other people had a chance to step up too. We have to force more misses on defense. We had to shoot better, everyone did. There were few players who shot well. That team has too much talent to overcome all that.

Reporter: Do you still feel Suotamo deserves all the national awards?

Tovarich: Even more than I did before. We can't win when he isn't great.

Reporter: You tried Stafford at SG instead of PG with your backup PG for the first time. Is now really the time to experiment like that?

Tovarich: Of course. We're only on game 39. Time to try new things. Bazin really doesn't belong on the court in such a situation. Stafford seemed energetic enough so I gave him a couple extra minutes. He's our best 3 point shooter probably.

Reporter: Where will we see you next season?

Tovarich: No one cares about that right now. When the disappointment of the season ending has gone, it'll be time to talk about that.

Re: Coach Tovarich 2.0 CH2K8 Career Legacy

Georgia Athletic Director: It's my great privilege to announce Coach Dave Tovarich as the next men's basketball head coach at the University of Georgia. Coach Tovarich did remarkable things at Western Kentucky with 3 consecutive Final Fours and a national championship. It was our determination to go for the best young mid-major coach in America and there is none better. We are grateful he accepted and look forward to turning the program around.

Tovarich: Thank you all for taking a moment to leave spring football practice and come over to the basketball arena. Thank you athletic director guy. Feel free to stay out of my way while you micromanage football. I look forward to the challenge of turning this team around and winning a national championship, unless Oregon State calls first. So, you know, root for them to win and I'll stick around for a bit. This may take a few seasons. There's a lot of work to do on the roster, on the culture of the program. We'll for sure be raising the standards around here. Since no one pays attention to basketball here, I look forward to doing it under the radar.

                                Reporter: Who are your...

Tovarich: Dear God, don't make the first question about assistants.

                                Reporter: Assistants?

Tovarich: The same two from Western Kentucky. They are the best tape guys and recruiting helpers there are and this roster needs a lot of work.

Reporter: What did you think of your replacement hiring at Western Kentucky?

Tovarich: Yeah, there's a reason I didn't know where the AD's office was. The less I saw or heard from him the better. What a clown hire. I was looking forward to dominating Samford. Of all the people on planet earth, they hire my arch-nemesis. Unbelievable. Luckily the 3 best players were seniors and drafted and Flores left the team for Central Connecticut or some such place. He is still inheriting way too good a team for his lack of quality. I have to think long and hard about whether or not I'm going to be able to schedule him any time soon to extend his misery. I'm sure he's counting on me not wanting anything to do with Western Kentucky, who'd run circles around this roster I'm inheriting.

Reporter: So you'd really leave for Oregon State?

Tovarich: If they ever fire Kermit, or he retires, I'll be on the plane over when the AD calls. Arizona too. But apparently all AD's at power schools tolerate 17 loss seasons just fine. Felton only got fired for going over 20 I guess. Not a single other power job was open. I gave some thought to San Diego State. I am a West Coast guy, but I'm ready for the biggest conferences.

Reporter: So you think you'll end up staying until we win a national championship?

Tovarich: Power jobs are few and far between. I think the Big 12 has had 1 change in 10 years now, which was only Bob Knight's retirement. The PAC 10 has had 2 changes, only 1 firing and Lute retiring. Only 3 non-retirements in the ACC, I think 2 in the Big East and 2 or 3 in the Big 10 in almost a decade. They are so hard to get that I may have time to turn this sinking ship around and overhaul it all before anything else comes open. I never expected to stay at Western Kentucky for 7 years. It was intended to be a stepping stone, but it was a great job.

Reporter: So why leave it now?

Tovarich: I was ready to go after the national championship. That seemed like the best time to transition. But I wasn't interested in Purdue. So a guy like Suotamo made it easy to come back for one more ride.

Reporter: When will we hear updates about the roster, etc?

Tovarich: I have to gut that thing immediately and start opening up some scholarships as soon as I can. The one and only scholarship this season was wasted on some 57th ranked PG who probably belongs on Georgia State. I have a lot to clean up. Maybe someone can invent a transfer portal so I can get a new team immediately? That's what my favorite pre-season press conferences are for. For now, it's time to get to work.
