Tovarich: Wow, I thought the blocks were out of control the last game. They had 8 at halftime. The backup C had 5 in only 11 minutes LOL. We kept them under 60%, so that must have gotten better after halftime when they were at 63%. We did a good job turning them over with their crazy first half shooting and the block party.

Reporter: Aren't you going to celebrate your conference championship?

Tovarich: No. Those are a given. We did a lot of stuff poorly today. I'm focused on that.

Reporter: Would you like to tell us what you did well?

Tovarich: Shot 3's. Got to the line and executed FT's. Turnovers. The usual. Not rebounds, not field goal defense.

Tovarich: That might be the most inept game of offense I've seen in my time at this school. Luckily they were also inept. Camper hit some 3's and Suotamo did an adequate job scoring. Without them, that was brutal to watch. Pitiful rebounding as always. We're probably lucky we got 2 early fouls on their center, because he had 9 boards in only 13 minutes. Their SG had 9 rebounds. I got a 7 foot giant and he can't get to 9 most games.

Reporter: Was there a letdown after clinching the conference championship?

Tovarich: No. I don't think the players spent much time celebrating that.

Reporter: Are you distracted by talk of you leaving for another school at the end of the season?

Tovarich: Nope. I'm all in on this season with this team.

Reporter: Just a bad game then?

Tovarich: Bad's being kind. If it was against a competent team, and not Denver, we'd have lost to 200 schools today. Luckily it was one of the others.

Tovarich: It was tough to find much working in that first half. The people with PF next to their name were 2-12. Jack went 4/5 in the second half at least. The bench, other than Ferris wasn't doing anything. Luckily the people with C next to their name were dominant scorers. 3's were not happening, so we only took two in the second half I think, which didn't go any better. Jack grabbed a couple boards and went back up with them after halftime, he missed everything against the break, though did draw some fouls on their center, which is always helpful. He might have had a triple double with boards and blocks if he was able to play more.

Reporter: Are the closer than expected games a concern at this point in the season?

Tovarich: This is the best time for it to happen. We'll probably crash out of the Sun Belt tournament the way we're playing right now, and maybe that'll get everyone to re-focus like last year.

Reporter: So you don't care about the Sun Belt tournament?

Tovarich: Never really have except for that first season when we possibly needed it to make the tournament. The teams who need it always go in caring more than we do. Those aren't the kinds of banners I pre-order.

Reporter: Do you have confidence in this team to overcome a game where Suotamo is contained, like by a power school in the tournament?

Tovarich: That's very hit and miss. Camper goes crazy on 3's here and there. Pawlak and Jack are usually better than today. It's a 50/50 proposition there. So, confident? No, not really. Just have to hope we can find someone else.

Tovarich: Rough rebounding night. Rough night from 3, which is more and more common lately. We won that one at the free throw line for sure.

Reporter: Speaking of, Coach Monson is upset with you getting all the calls when they were the home team.

Tovarich: That's easy to say 24-9 FT's are quite a disparity, but we got the ball down low and were aggressive in the paint. They wanted to get into a jump shooting contest.

Reporter: When was the last time Bazin did anything in a game?

Tovarich: Yeah, he's not quite in Flores territory, but it's been rough for him. I know he's capable though. But he's on a short leash every game.

Reporter: Can Stafford go perfect on FT's this season?

Tovarich: I know he's only at like 51 for the year, but for a true FR, I am shocked he's still not missed. Everyone's doing a great job at the line this year. Even Suotamo is over 80%, incredible for a big guy. He was almost 80 last year, but our worst shooter is 73%. It's been stunning.

Tovarich: Hack-a-Shaq is not the best philosophy against us. Shooting in the paint was a bit of a chore for everyone. Jack and Merriex couldn't hit anything. Almost everything Pawlak hit was a jumper outside. Ferris started 1/6. Suotamo was decent enough, mostly from the line though.

Reporter: Re-match with North Texas. What are your thoughts on them?

Tovarich: Same situation as last year playing them in the 1 vs. 4 game, and they ran away with it at the end. We just had a hard fought game at their place last week. We need to defend their jump shots better. We'll be hyper aggressive on defense to hopefully just stop the shot attempts because we are awful at forcing misses.

Reporter: The bench is not getting many minutes. Is that a worry?

Tovarich: In the short term, they're not generally playing well. Some decent games pop up here and there, but they're inconsistent. Rough night tonight for most of them. Some of them will start next year and need development, but that's the next coach's problem. (gets up and leaves before questions)

Tovarich: Some of those roller coaster games are bound to happen, and I've been through dozens that I can't explain what changes so many times, but this one probably tops the list.

Reporter: How were you feeling up 15-5 after a few minutes?

Tovarich: Great. Then suddenly we're down 9 about 5 minutes later. I have no idea how we kept ourselves in it. The first half stats were insane. They were 7/10 on 3's. They outrebounded us 16-5. That Hehn guy had 18 at the half. Jack was 0/5 on layups. We were just 2/9 on 3's. We did a great job hanging in there through all that...somehow.

Reporter: They started out hot in the second half too.

Tovarich: Yeah, hit a quick 3, started 7/10 again. I admit I wrote that one off and just pondered what it is about tournament semifinals that cause such superhuman performances.

Reporter: They score at 7:38 to go up 12. What changed from there?

Tovarich: Yeah, no idea. They didn't score for over 7 minutes after that. We forced some turnovers. The rebounding magically reversed itself. I can't explain it. They finally scored with 28 seconds to go once we'd gone up 11, but I have no explanation for why they suddenly turned into my first Eastern Shore team.

Reporter: South Alabama in the championship. They're a 10 seed but on their home court. What do you expect from them?

Tovarich: Can't predict this stuff. We'll have our long passes over the half court trap ready to go and hopefully Suotamo's gonna finish them for us.

Tovarich: Nice big win. I'd say easy, but having to navigate Suotamo's foul trouble was insane. 4 fouls in 7 minutes of playing time on him in the first half. Like, I can't remember the last time we were called over the back of someone, while the ball was still on the rim no less. A blocking foul on him on someone who'd already passed the ball. A charge on him that was dubious. I finally had to relent and sit him with 4 1/2 minutes to go in the first half because they seemed pre-determined to foul him out before halftime. Then not a single foul on him in the second half. Amazing huh?

Reporter: How much did Jack step up during his foul trouble?

Tovarich: Enormous. The lobs over the top of the half court trap to Suotamo had to go to him now and he threw them down decisively and it was wonderful. I almost wondered if I had to pull him too at first, since he had 2 fouls called on him in less than 4 minutes.

Reporter: 23 turnovers, is that a record?

Tovarich: It might be, I'm not sure. They were so determined to play as quickly as possible that they made such long passes that were easily picked off. With a C and 2 PF's on the floor, we have a lot of length.

Reporter: Do you think you can be the overall #1 seed now?

Tovarich: If Marquette or Florida State win their conference tournament, I'd expect it to go to them.

Reporter: So was this a farewell to the Sun Belt today for you?

                          Tovarich: What do you think?

Reporter: Well, I...(Coach Tovarich disappears while he's actually answering the rhetorical question)

Tovarich: That got a little lopsided there in the last couple minutes with all their 3's they missed, but it was a so-so performance by us. I don't think that kind of execution and effort will get us by North Carolina in 2 days, so hopefully Suotamo will be more like himself, because he needs to be. Jack stepped up. Jordan hit some 3's. We didn't stay tight on their two outside shooters like I instructed. They were way too open. All around, everything's going to have to be better. I don't know how North Carolina is only an 8 seed, but they're rated almost as high as we are, so we'll need our A game rather than our C game we brought today.

Reporter: Does Ford Field seem like an appropriate venue for Rounds 1 and 2?

Tovarich: It's as appropriate as us winning our national championship last season in a 3,800 seat arena.

Reporter: Will anything less than a national championship be a failure?

Tovarich: Not at all, but losing in the 2nd round will be, even though I know how good an opponent we've got.

Reporter: How do you think you matchup with North Carolina?

Tovarich: Overall, their starting 5 are better than our starting 5. I notice they don't have a true C on their roster, so hopefully Suotamo can take some advantage there. They're guard heavy, so we'll see how our length matches up and we may need to play Jordan a little more instead of Jack or Pawlak if we need to get more athletic.
