What a run and great championship. Congrats to WKU and Coach Tovarich!

It even seems like coach is putting aside some of his cynicism and some sunshine is shining through. Like when someone asks Bill Belichick about a TE from the 80s

Look at the sunshine in this presser. He's truly pleased!

We're not quite the most talented team, but we're top 5. The better teams like Duke, and Boston College and Georgia Tech didn't survive and we did. Once we got to the Elite 8, we were pretty much the favorites. It no longer matters at that point if you're a mid-major or a power school or someone like Eastern Shore if you can get the talent there. The right coach, the right players and the right situation can produce a champion from any conference almost. It took us 6 years, and I inherited a great foundation left by the last coach that really made it easy to hit the ground running. Eventually someone else will do it too. We may not have all the advantages of the big schools, so it is significant in that regard, but it can be done and it should give hope to all the other mids.

Tovarich: I now reluctantly take questions.

Reporter: We're all a little surprised you came back coach.

Tovarich: Indeed. I very much considered moving on as I've accomplished all that can be accomplished here. Purdue was the only power job available and it did not interest me. Wyoming in the Mountain West was a consideration. That's still a step up from the Sun Belt but a notch below power conference, but I'll wait for an opportunity I like.

Reporter: 3 scholarships available. What's the goal in recruiting?

Tovarich: Another center for sure. Last year was a weak group. This Jamaican guy is unlikely to ever play. We need a new backup center so he doesn't have to play next season. We have 2 SR PF's, so that would be a need. Then maybe another SF even though Flores stubbornly stuck around despite my attempt to nudge him toward transferring.

        Reporter: What about the...

Tovarich: Let me guess, the assistants?

        Reporter: Yes, coach.

Tovarich: I kept e-mail guy. He's good at e-mailing. I found a better tape guy. Don't ask me his name.

Reporter: You said this would be a rebuilding year. You're in the top 10, so does such a thing exist here?

Tovarich: No idea how we're ranked that high, rated this high, any of it after losing 7 seniors. I thought 2 years ago was a rebuild and we were ranked, but we ended up a 5 seed. So it still could be. The pollsters can be wrong.

Thanks. Even coach Tovarich can't complain too much about a national championship, other than some minor references to rebounding inability and amazing shooting by almost all opponents.

Tovarich: Hopefully that was just a bad game, or this team's really in trouble this season.

Reporter: Uh, you won by 12 coach.

Tovarich: Yeah, but against that coach, it should be 25 minimum.

Reporter: Is there a championship hangover or just an inexperienced roster?

Tovarich: Probably both. Maybe just a road game, against a team who already managed to play a game in October, which is supposed to be against the rules, but that's another story. We probably should've come here last year and ruined the start of his career at his place, and also because last year's team was far more experienced. Maybe a road game to start the season wasn't the bench strategy with this team. We go home now, but against a top 10 team, which probably should've waited too.

Reporter: Suotamo dominated the second half, why so few touches in the first?

Tovarich: We know what he can do. We experimented a little too much in the first half I guess. Then when down 36-26, I figured we better just get on with it.

Reporter: How about your favorite statistic?

Tovarich: Yikes, 17-7 we were down on the boards at the break. Embarrassing. We made it a little less embarrassing after the half, but it was still awful from start to finish against a team like that. Hopefully just a bad night. Suotamo's supposed to be better than that.

Reporter: How do you assess all the newcomers?

Tovarich: Bazin was on, that was helpful. Ferris didn't grab a rebound in 8 minutes, that's awful. I'm still not sure there's a point to having him there despite what people rate him. Meyers dished it out nicely, didn't take a shot, but that's going to be the norm for him.

Reporter: Is the game a disappointment because Jordan missed the 3 at the buzzer?

Tovarich: I thought that went without saying.

Tovarich: Well, that's everything you expect in a game with a Bob Huggins team. Physical street fight kind of a game. Great defense, ugly offense-for both teams usually. Hopefully he doesn't take the loss too hard and go get a DUI or something. Maybe he learned his lesson at Cincinnati and doesn't end up getting fired from West Virginia for one too.

Reporter: You benched Jack when he was 1/8 in the first half. Sometimes you'd sit people the rest of the game at that point, what gave you the confidence to put him back in after halftime?

Tovarich: Because it couldn't possibly get worse, right? Jeez, that was brutal. Think he was blocked 4 times, the one was a dunk, he made 2/3 in the second half, though one was a miss that we got lucky was goaltending. Pawlak was brutal in the paint too. It's like anyone who's a PF was doomed to be awful tonight. Thank goodness Suotamo did a good job scoring and getting some fouls on their big guys.

Reporter: Another poor night of rebounding. Is there any hope there or is that going to be a bigger weakness than usual?

Tovarich: Suotamo's supposed to be a good rebounder. I'm not entirely convinced that's true. But maybe we need to tweak some things there to make up for this team's shortcomings.

Reporter: Bazin's off to a good start, does he deserve more minutes?

Tovarich: If he keeps shooting like that, he'll get some more. Flores is supposed to be better than him, but Flores is the worst scorer since some of my Eastern Shore players, so I'll defy the ratings that whoever came up with and play Bazin more for sure. Maybe that'll be some of the experimentation we do coming up when we're not playing top 10 teams.

Reporter: Speaking of experimenting, what else do you plan to try?

Tovarich: We may try Camper at PG and start Jordan. Pawlak maybe on the B team at PF instead of starting both of them. Maybe Bazin can start some at SF and we can have a true SF instead of using SG's and PF's there. Lots of things we can try with this team.

Fun dynasty to follow. It's always weird seeing a team like Air Force ranked in the top-10, let alone top-25. Do you think this squad can repeat? Feels like the Sun Belt should be a gimme.

Tovarich: I'm a little surprised at how easy that was. We were so bad in our first road game, and so good in this one. We picked the right way to do that rather than the other way around.

Reporter: What did you attribute the better rebounding to?

Tovarich: I really wish I knew. I'll likely go my whole career before I ever figure it out.

Reporter: Even though they were playing zone, were so many 3's a good idea?

Tovarich: Probably not. A good idea would have been Suotamo on every possession. You assume they'd catch on at some point though. But I can't resist an open 3.

Reporter: Do you take back what you said about not being a top 6 team?

Tovarich: No, not yet. 2 years ago I thought we were in an obvious rebuild and we started like 10-0 before we lost 3 in a row. There will be some inconsistency with this team. We've already seen it with some people.

Tovarich: Well, good result. I think they're probably a decent team and just had a really awful night. We had some struggles too.

Reporter: You won by 37 coach. How bad were the struggles really?

Tovarich: The starters in the paint were brutal. Jack was 0-5 in the paint, stuffed twice, missed 3 on his own. Suotamo was under 50% against a bunch of backups. Got the starter in foul trouble, then some black Japanese guy came in. If I wasn't redshirting our white Jamaican guy, those two battling might have been fun. Bazin's hot start is obviously over. Ferris and Merriex did a good job. I guess it's just the starters that were semi-cursed shooting in the paint. Funny how it all seems to happen to all of them at once.

Reporter: Is Flores just not going to play?

Tovarich: Even in mop-up time I have no use for him. I got plenty of young guys with a future here who can gain some action. I tried to get him to transfer after last year and he didn't take the hint. He is totally unable to contribute on offense. He just takes up space. If we're in a situation at the end of a game where I need someone to pile up some intentional fouls or we're in the 8th OT and we need a fresh body, maybe I'd think about it.

Reporter: Speaking of the "white Jamaican guy", why are you going so hard for another center recruit?

Tovarich: I should've cut him already, and the 3rd PG. They're not really going to develop into anything. I can cut them next year, but I should've been more patient with the scholarships last year and carried them over.

Tovarich: Luckily most of the team shot well. Suotamo was great at scoring, so was Pawlak. Jack's in a slump apparently. Jordan hit a couple 3's off the bench. Camper did well enough. Rebounding was poor, but that was also a result of not forcing many misses. We can get some steals, and I know that gives them an occasional open shot or easy layup, but I feel like they'd just make it anyway, so may as well go all out for it.

Reporter: Can Suotamo keep up this scoring pace?

Tovarich: I think so, though I need the rebounding to be better. We've never had a 20 a game scorer because we've never needed one. Even when people like Tamayo could go off with a bunch of 3's, we had so much depth that no one person needed to carry us on a regular basis. This team though, the scoring depth is not what it has been. Camper's capable of decent shooting games, but I haven't seen any indication he can do what Li or Lewis or Tamayo could do where they might hit 4 or 5 in a row and go like 7/11 in a game. He and Jordan hit some here and there, but it's not consistent. So we may need 20 a game or more from him, but rebounding is my main concern, as always.

Reporter: The only other elite team in this tournament Georgia Tech lost to Portland State yesterday, so is the field disappointing?

Tovarich: It's hard to think of many tournaments in my career we got to play an elite team, so they all tend to be disappointing. I can schedule Portland State or Wright State or whoever we end up seeing tomorrow any time, and I usually don't and there's a reason for that.

Tovarich: Eh, nice to win a tournament I guess. It'd be nice to get more than one team with a pulse though. Poor shooting from 3, but we should take one every time against a 2-3 zone. Rebounding was disappointing as usual, minus San Francisco. So-so game is about the best I can say.

Reporter: Should Jordan be a starter after that?

Tovarich: Eh, maybe. There's not a lot of consistency on this team. People are hot and cold. More so because we're younger. Camper couldn't hit anything in the first half. Made a few 3's in the second, couldn't hit a 2 to save his life. The big guys were mostly solid except Pawlak but he was only out at the 3 point line, maybe it'd have gone better for him down low.

Reporter: Suotamo grabbed 11 boards but you still seem disappointed?

Tovarich: Their two big guys got 13 and 15 in as many or fewer minutes. 10 should be a given. 15 is more what I expect against an opponent like that. He needs to average 20 and 10 probably because of the inconsistency of the rest of the team. He needs to be doing what he did tonight against most of our opponents. We don't have all that many good ones.

Tovarich: Well, the second half was a bit more like it. The first half was rather pitiful. That Bland guy had 15 at halftime I think. I don't know why I tell people to stay tight on the outside shooters and yet, they're wide open all the time. Down 14-10 on the boards at halftime was pitiful. Our 3 point shooting was pitiful.

Reporter: Did you give a good halftime speech?

Tovarich: I told them they were embarrassing themselves and that I'd put Flores in if they didn't improve because I can watch him take up space on the floor with no purpose if that's what I wanted to see.

Reporter: Is there any reliable plan B on offense other than Suotamo?

Tovarich: Well, 3/16 on 3's, even if I'll accept they're not happening and so get the ball down low and Suotamo should dominate a team like that. Hell, even Ferris grabbed 11 boards in only 10 minutes. Suotamo somehow needed 18 to get 10. That's why I started him over Shehan usually because he's supposed to be a good rebounder and he's taking a step back in that regard this season it feels like.

Tovarich: Second halves are much easier when you dominate the first half, unlike last time out. Little sloppy were the backups in the second half, but they're a generally young group, so such is life.

Reporter: Will you continue this series?

Tovarich: This 'rivalry' probably can go on hiatus. We're not getting much out of it.

Reporter: Was the rebounding better from Suotamo today?

Tovarich: I guess, but that's what he should do. It's hard to judge anyone's performance from games like this.

Reporter: The in-season recruiting window has opened. Do you expect to sign anyone?

                              Tovarich: No.

I’m working my way through this legacy (fun read!), but wanted to chime in that I’ve seen this quite a few times, as well. It usually happens with one or two games a season. It doesn’t show any phantom individual statistics, at least, but it’s still annoying and I don’t know what the cause is. I’m not sure if it messes up the tracked team points per game / points allowed or not.
