Tovarich: OK, let's get the usual out of the way. I cut all 5 of the walkons on the roster. They were never going to see the court. We'll try to get lucky with some different ones next year. We will RS our Lithuanian PG, who despite somehow being a 4* already seems like he's not going to develop into anything. We'll leave him on the team for now and see if he improves, but I'm not holding my breath on it. Don't anyone translate that into Lithuanian for him. The remaining roster:

      Tovarich: The depth chart:

Tovarich: I'm not entirely sure how to divvy everyone up yet. Both our PF's are too slow to break the press. Root was an adequate PG, but I think I'd prefer starting an actual PG. Even though Hart is a true PG, Root is terrible at shooting, so my initial plan is to have Root be the B team PG and Hart move over to SG. We'll figure all that out later. The schedule:

Tovarich: Proud of the guys for gutting out a win tonight. It was a tough road environment. It was a hard fought win that will build lots of character for the future. It's amazing to start 1-0.

Reporter: Are you feeling OK coach? You don't sound like yourself.

Tovarich: I tried some coachspeak there. Not good huh?

Reporter: No. Stick to your usual.

Tovarich: OK, that was a soul sucking embarrassment of a game that made me ashamed to wear a suit that doesn't even have a Georgia logo on it. -16 in rebounds to Savannah State is the most pitiful rebounding effort I've encountered in my long career of god-awful rebounding. I would expect to put a team of 5 FR out there and out-rebound Savannah freaking State.

Reporter: Are you regretting chopping down the roster to nothing?

Tovarich: No. We kept 10 solid players. They've got some growing to do. There are going to be games like this when too many FR are playing. There's a reason I started with a cupcake school like this, and on the road. They were able to largely play like garbage except for a few people and they still can win. We need some road experience before we go play some real teams, which will in only about 2 weeks.

Lithuanian Reporter: Kas nutiko Aurimas Mikolas?

Tovarich: I can't say I speak any Lithuanian but I'll assume you're asking why Mikolas is no longer on the roster. I changed my mind about keeping him and I cut him so I can use that scholarship again next season to sign someone who might actually play some day, which he would not have.

        (Lithuanian Reporter leaves)

Reporter: Would you like to amend your previous statement that you expect to make the tournament?

Tovarich: I reserve the right to change my mind on that at some point. The growing pains may end up being worse than I thought. I'll get back to you on that.

Reporter: How did you settle on these lineups?

Tovarich: They're far from settled. We'll experiment if we ever play less awful and are in charge against someone, hopefully against Elon next. Kovacevic is probably not nearly as useful as a PF as he was a C. I know both our C's are FR, but they need to rebound better. Kovacevic won't have the speed to break the press like we could with Zahn, so teams that do that, which is most of the SEC seemingly for some reason, we'll need some kind of alternative strategy there. We have no real 3-point threat on the B team, so there exists the possibility of moving Sanderson or Horton to the B team. Probably Sanderson if he shoots like that much more. Kovacevic in a 4-out offense is no use out by the 3-point line like Zahn was, so we may experiment with Parsons as a PF out there. He's no 3-point threat either, but the B team needs a little more threat of outside shooting. If we can't rebound anyway, I don't care if we're small at PF because we're going to have to learn to win without rebounding apparently. I am quite experienced at this.

Reporter: What's the goal with recruiting?

Tovarich: Yikes, are the questions ever going to end today?

Reporter: You wouldn't let anyone ask any last time.

Tovarich: Fine. We're going for a PG and a SF. We're being very aggressive with some high rated players. If we fail again, we'll have to go with the long game like last year.

Sorry I missed this at the time you posted it. My bad. Most Sun Belt games were gimmes, and then one of them, usually FIU puts some magical game together combined with me playing a C game. These power conferences are killer though. Air Force I think was just a bunch of SR's that year. That team unity stuff is really critical in the simulation engine. Schools like AFA just pop up for a year or two here and there and then they go back to being average. I've had some other legacies where Rider and Idaho were #1 because they were undefeated.

I never really pay a whole lot of attention to other team's rosters, but I got curious about some things and started looking through. There is virtually zero national recruiting done in this game. Duke has 3 players from New York, their 3 best players and the rest are quite regional. The ACC total has 5 players from Texas and none west of there. The Big East has no one on scholarship west of Illinois. The Big 12 has 1 player from California and 2 from Arizona. The entire PAC 10 is from California, Arizona, Nevada, Oregon, Washington and 1 player from Idaho. These big schools that would cherry pick the elitest of the elite national recruits are probably suffering when there is a weak recruiting class from their area. The PAC 10 almost never has a down year because California is loaded every year with tons of great recruits. Arkansas has one player from Colorado and Kentucky has one from Oregon, otherwise no one else in the conference besides me has a player west of Texas.

That's crazy. Luckily I keep a spreadsheet of the top 20 prospects every year in my Bulgarian Bros dynasty to see if it's similar for me.

Duke has been dominant and getting amazing players. Here's where their top stars have come from:
              • Newark, NJ
              • Philadelphia, PA
              • Charlotte, NC
              • High Point, NC
              • North Charleston, SC
              • Virginia Beach, VA
              • Brooklyn, NY
              • Houston, TX
              • Cincinnati, OH
              • Cape Coral, FL

Everything is NE and Eastern seaboard except for Houston, Cincy, and Cape Coral, and all of those were year 1.

It seems like the longer the recruiting cycle goes on, the more local teams get? However, the California and West coast teams have not been good yet in my universe.

Re: Coach Tovarich 2.0 CH2K8 Career Legacy

Could all be roster related somehow too. I used one that someone on OS posted in the 2K section for the game. This is the first time I've ever used that one. I also notice a big difference in the coaching carousel too. There are barely ever power jobs available with this particular roster. It takes over 20 losses, possibly consecutively to get fired from a power job. Virtually every power coach has their job security maxed out.

The ONLY Big 12 change in 10 seasons was Texas Tech when Bob Knight retired. The only 2 PAC 10 changes were Lute Olson retiring and Oregon State fired Jay John like they always do.

The Big 10 is slightly chaotic with a whopping 5 changes in 10 years. The Big East has been hit with the most retirements, but I think just 1-2 actual firings. I think 2 of the 4 changes in the ACC were retirements. Just 3 firings and 1 retirement in the SEC. I can't ever remember it being so hard to get a power job before, so it may have something to do with this.

Tovarich: I was getting ready to play a recording of my previous press conference, just subtract the road stuff and then of course, this would have been way more embrassing because only like 1,000 people were at the game in Savannah and we had 9,610 apparently.

Student Newspaper Reporter: You said you wouldn't schedule a Tuesday game after we discussed this last year.

Tovarich: Maybe I did it so I wouldn't have to answer so many questions like last week.

Reporter: I need some quotes so it looks like I'm taking this seriously and I can be rewarded with more football press conferences and less basketball press conferences, so we better do this. What turned the game around all of a sudden?

Tovarich: I have no idea. We were bricking everything left and right and had a whopping 27-26 lead with 3 minutes to go before halftime. Then I subbed the B team in. It was just going to be for a minute and then I was going to call a timeout, yell, errr "emphasize" rebounding and send the starters back out for the last 2 minutes, but the backups went on a 15-2 run to end the half. Starters carried it on with a 9-0 to start after halftime, then it was all over and they just jacked 3's most of the 2nd half.

Student Newspaper Reporter: Do you consider the rebounding to be an improvement?

Tovarich: -2 to Elon is still brutal. Maybe less brutal, but still brutal. Moody got a decent number, as you'd hoped he would against Savannah State, so I'll hold off on putting Kovacevic back at C for now.

Student Newspaper Reporter: Is it too soon to think about mixing up the rotations after certain people are struggling?

Tovarich: Too early. We'll look at that soon though. I'm not sitting through another game of whatever Sanderson has going on shooting 3's. We'll likely get some quality opponents in the Old Spice, so we'll see what everyone can do against some actual talent and then assess.

Student Newspaper Reporter: OK, please coach, seriously. Tuesday is for the weekly football press conference.

Tovarich: Some awful shooting. I was going to lose it if I watched yet another finger roll off the front of the rim short. I must have watched 10 of them. I benched Moody at the end of the first half. Deren was no better. Freshman as a whole struggled, and I don't know if all the FR were destined to struggle or just people with C next to their name. 1/10 at halftime between them was some of the worst layup shooting I've ever seen. I know it won't be the last. Such are the lives of FR. Kovacevic was enormous. I almost put him back at center but he was doing fine where was. The refs weren't quite as absent as the last game against Elon where nothing was a foul, but they were pretty hands off. Maybe that contributed to the C's getting pushed around, I don't know. I didn't think we were ready for an opponent like Wisconsin, even though on paper, we're allegedly better than them. Also we're the "home" team, which I swear matters even on neutral courts.

Reporter: Are you ready to admit the Savannah State game was just first game of the season kinda stuff, or just a bad night?

Tovarich: We'll see. +11 in turnovers and +8 shots and not pulling away until 3 minutes to go isn't encouraging.

Reporter: How do you assess the rebounding?

Tovarich: -4 against Wisconsin, probably our crowning achievement on the boards so far this season. We'll do what we always do: figure out other ways to win.

Reporter: Did Sanderson do well enough to start against Virginia tomorrow?

Tovarich: Yes, he'll remain in for now. The C's are going to have a short leash before I stick Kovacevic back down there. Virginia's likely to push them around.

Reporter: What can you take into the Virginia game from last year's matchup?

Tovarich: No idea. They were ranked last year just like now and then they went 4-14 in the ACC. They got to the line more than we did last year. I'm sure they killed us on the boards. We're the "home" team, and we're on their home court like last year. They have a couple new starters, but boatloads more experience than we do, especially at C. We shot 3's well and still lost to them last year, so we need some sharp shooting and we'll have to give a quick hook to the FR.

Tovarich: We couldn't much wrong in the first half luckily. They couldn't do much wrong in the second half. 15/20 and 5/6 on 3's is pretty crazy jump shooting, even in my long history of insanely terrible field goal defense Luckily we hit 3/4 3's in the second half and shot ok enough and got to the line quite a few times because it didn't take long to see they were going to shoot the lights out and the comeback was on. I knew very quickly we needed to make sure there simply was not enough time to come all the way back and a few more minutes it might have been different.

Reporter: How shocked are you by Moody's scoring?

Tovarich: After what I watched from the C's yesterday, I'm stunned. It's especially stunning because that team starts 5 SR's. I expect as a FR he'd get beaten down. The rebounding was pretty non-existent but if he scores 26 a game, I'll live with poor rebounding. Rebounding requires misses and neither team really did a whole lot of that. Very unexpected and pleasantly surprised. I expect him to have a lot of 26 point games but 2 years down the road. It was most welcome tonight. It's hard to figure out why the struggles yesterday and dominant today.

Reporter: Another top 12 team in West Virginia in the championship. Is it important to win an in-season tournament?

Tovarich: You may as well try to win every game you play, just because. But I won't lose any sleep over losing the championship if we do. We've got some other tournament later. We won one last year. We're building the program, developing the talent and seeing how we match up against good competition for conference play. It's nice to get a tournament field like this for once. I've been disappointed in a lot of opponents I never got to meet up with in these things. Finally getting our money's worth.

Reporter: Is mere experience with the big men the key to their improvement on the boards?

Tovarich: There's going to be clunkers rebounding the entirety of their careers. Even Suotamo who's off in the NBA somewhere had some 5 rebound nights as a SR.

Tovarich: Similar to the Virginia game. We had a crazy good first half. We shot well, shot 3's well, rebounded well. Did an ok job stopping them. You felt the run coming in the second half though. We just made sure to run enough clock to make sure they never had a chance to come back. We're lucky they only took four 3's in the second half because they made them all. We managed just 1/4.

Reporter: Are you surprised to win this tournament?

Tovarich: Very. There was absolutely nothing we did in those first two games that inspired any confidence in me to think we could beat 3 good teams like that. Moody was great these last two games. Sanderson and Horton both shot 3's well. We got their big guys in foul trouble early and it actually played out like you expect. They struggled to guard our bigs and we won the rebounding. That's almost always a good strategy and we try to draw some fouls against their big guys quickly and we succeed a decent amount and then some SF comes in and outrebounds us.

Reporter: Were you surprised to see a full court press?

Tovarich: Yes and no. Yes because it's Bob Huggins and that's just odd. No because everyone seems to have that same strategy against us. We're seeing it a ton. They bailed out on that after 10 minutes when they realized that we almost always destroy anyone who tries that.

Tovarich: You probably have to go back a long way to find a game one of my teams took 43 3's, but I've never seen a team play so much zone and I can't help myself, despite how poorly it went for a lot of the game. We improved a lot in the 2nd half. I think we went to halftime 5/22, so we were 12/21 in the second to blow it open. We did a great job grabbing offensive rebounds though, particularly in the 1st half so we got a lot of putbacks. They shot 3's pretty well, so they felt in it until the 2nd half when we finally shot better.

Reporter: You moved the other Sanderson to PG. Is that a new experiment?

Tovarich: I just didn't want him shooting anymore.

Reporter: Why do you think everyone likes to full court press you?

Tovarich: Maybe they just smell blood with a FR PG and think it's a weakness for us, but it isn't.

Tovarich: De ja vu all over again. More zone. More full court press the entire game. I think everyone must be using the same analytics company to decide how they should play and they should probably all fire them. We're pretty unbeatable shooting over 50% on 3's. And Kovacevic doesn't usually have the speed to execute against the press the way I like but he managed to drive it in constantly and finish...with actual dunks. Every time he tried some lame layup he seemed to miss. Overall, just expected a tougher road game there. I imagine that'll change for the next one though.

Reporter: Normally you slow down the game after acquiring a big lead. Why not tonight?

Tovarich: They started 4/5 in the 2nd half and so I thought about it. But we were executing so well against the press that I felt good about getting 2 points every time instead of standing around dribbling. If they ever really threated, I'd have done it. But we shot 7/8 on 3's in the 2nd half. Horton who was 0/5 on them in the first half went 3/3 after. Their modest 6/10 on 3's wasn't good enough to catch up. They're a young team, so I guess that's most likely why they had a bad night.

Reporter: When will see you press more?

Tovarich: Maybe if we ever need to. I don't think we've had to since the first game against Savannah State when we went down 55-50 in the second half. I suspect the occasion will rise next game where we may need it. Maybe we got our bad performances out of the way the first game and 11 minutes and we're rolling now. But I still expect some inconsistency and a thud of a performance somewhere with a roster of half freshmen.

Reporter: How epic will the Georgia Tech game be next week?

Tovarich: As "epic" as a regular season basketball game in November can be I guess.

Tovarich: I was mocking the guy who asked if the game would be epic. That's a quite cliche term. There's no Game of the Century in regular season basketball like football for a reason, but that was a pretty intense game. Quite draining to partake in. So many things to get to, I wouldn't even know where to start.

Reporter: Georgia Tech coach thinks your SEC refs were very bias, particularly in the 2nd half.

Tovarich: He absolutely should feel that way. We hadn't been called for a single foul the entire half until the final seconds when we did it intentionally. When Horton made the 2 FT's to go up 3 with 8 seconds, I know I've been burned on the intentional fouls before, but we had so many fouls to give and so little time, I knew we had to. They'd intentionally fouled I think 6 times. So fouls were 9-0 before that and 15-0 before we intentionally fouled.

Reporter: Will you continue to intentionally foul at the end like that even if you've been burned before?

Tovarich: Yeah, we got it right last time last year against someone. We kept forcing them to inbound it and we finally were able to intercept the one. Auburn I think. This time they tried to shoot from behind half court and we ended up blocking it anyway. The way they shot before that, it wouldn't have stunned me if it went in. Glad we were able to block without fouling.

Reporter: Is it discouraging to need to be +17 in turnovers to eek out a game?

Tovarich: That's an insane number for sure. Also 35 FT's, easily the most any of my teams have ever shot I think. Their shooting was crazy. They have so many good shooters. But it's a faulty roster composition. They had 2 PF's and we were able to keep one in foul trouble and the other eventually got 4 late. So when one had to go to the bench early in the 1st half, they're putting 4 guards out on the floor regularly. They shot well, so they made it work, but we made it work too.

Reporter: Kovacevic has been your go-to guy in your time here, but you seemed to bench him?

Tovarich: It sounds harsh to phrase it like that, but sometimes you have to accept the external forces working against you. I've witnessed a lot of very bizarre patterns and watched a lot of players come out so inept that there's nothing you can do to help them, and it sounds odd to say about a player who 8 FG's, but their full court press -gasp- was relentless, and I like the PF to break the press, drive it in and either go up or dump it off to the C, force their C into a tough decision and hopefully draw some fouls. Kovacevic was 0/6 driving it in against the press. Made EVERY other shot the entire game. Not only that, but when he passed it to Moody, which I did almost every time once I caught on, Moody would also miss EVERY shot. If they pressed and Kovacevic touched it, it was some kind of curse. So Fontenet didn't seem to be affected by it. Finally with 4 minutes left, the never-ending full court press we see every game was taken off and Kovacevic could resume his normal role.

Reporter: How frustrating was the rebounding?

Tovarich: It didn't take long to see what that would be like. They got half their misses back for the game. It's brutally tough to win a game like that. The +17 turnovers is supposed to lead to you having a bunch of extra shots. The -14 rebounds lost some of that advantage. Luckily the refs were generous with the fouls. Must have been ours.

Reporter: How did that team lose to Marist?

Tovarich: Incredible isn't it? Took a Herculean effort from us. Took a couple shots at the shot clock buzzer late, the 3 by Sanderson off the inbound pass with 2 seconds was awesome. Took 26 made FT's. I would love to know how Marist did it. It was the first game of the year, but presumably that went for Marist too.

Reporter: Is it possible your FR are simply not going to play like FR?

Tovarich: There'll be a dud somewhere. I've only lost like 5 non-conference games in 3+ years now. I don't know why that is. Conference games are tougher. We've been so bad at rebounding that it'll catch up somewhere. Somewhere with a competent roster that has a C and depth down low. These teams like Georgia Tech playing with 9 guards are fundamentally flawed and they can be taken advantage of. Most of the SEC folks seems to know you can't do that. Seems to be an ACC thing mainly. But yes, the FR will look like FR and we'll lose to someone bad like we did LSU last year. We don't go to Kentucky or Florida again somehow, which is strange, and just plain wrong, but someone will get us and make us look bad.

                                Tovarich: Yep. Good win.

                                Reporter: You seem bored coach.

Tovarich: Yeah, it's not supposed to be this easy. Then of course, you try to put a hard schedule together and we turn out to be better than everyone on our schedule so far except Georgia Tech, who just has a misconstructed roster. It's not the challenge I thought it would be. I know conference season will be tougher, but these OOC games are mostly easy.

Reporter: No in-season recruiting signings. Was this expected?

Tovarich: Yes. We were in 1st on the #2 recruit in the country. I think we've been passed by Duke now, but he was never going to sign in-season. He's in it for the long haul. We were the only offer on our SF but he seems to prefer some other people who can grab him if they ever bother to offer him. We've got a couple backup plans going. We may need some more.

Reporter: Usually you don't give the backups so many minutes.

Tovarich: Yeah, they played well. There was no need for the starters. It was a comfortable game. I'll have to try harder to scout out who's going to be good and who won't be next year because everyone on this roster is back.
