Tovarich: Good win, I guess. Luckily we built a 16-point lead of whatever. They caught fire there at the end, think they made 8 shots in a row, 5 of which were 3's. We hit our FT's and finished it out.

    Reporter: Rebounding?

Tovarich: A concern, always. Should be able to outrebound North Texas, who's probably the second worst team we'll play this season. Hardly surprising though.

Reporter: Are you and/or the players bored?

Tovarich: We go through the motions a lot. We lollygagged our way through this one. Eventually we've got some elite opponents and SEC play but I think it's been too easy, easier than it should be. It's been easy to exploit the opponents' weak roster composition and strategy.

Tovarich: We weren't quite as on fire as we were against them last week, but they played about as inept on offense. Just the two guys could score, and they could only score when they were in the PG slot, otherwise they struggled. 35 of their 49 must have come by whoever was playing PG at the moment. Extraordinary. I thought they had a bad game last week. They might just be bad.

Reporter: Who's going to challenge you this season?

Tovarich: I'm sure Georgia Tech will still be a great game, even if they did just lose @ Indiana. Anyone with a competent C on their roster might. Other than us, only UNLV in the top 8 has a C and they have a FR. I remain baffled at everyone's unwillingness to go recruit that position. The world isn't all about guards. It's not the worst strategy to go guard heavy and try to beat us by shooting 65% on jumpers, but even though we allow that more than your average team, it's still a low success rate.

      Reporter: Is going undefeated possible?

Tovarich: There's always a crazy game where we play terrible and the other team goes berserks. It usually takes both in combination and we usually still stick around somehow, but it seems highly unlikely. Eventually the pressure of that gets to you. I'd rather not deal with it.

Tovarich: That's another that's high on the list of unlikely wins. The insane shooting we overcame in the second half was incredible. I knew right away, the first shot being missed is usually a bad omen. It seemed like an extra bad omen when it double bounced around off the rim and both my big guys then missed the rebound, only for some puny little guard of theirs to wander in and grab it for an easy putback. Then they made 11 in a row. I think at one point they were 16/19 before kindly cooling off to ONLY shoot 21/29 in the second half and 6/9 on 3's. Down 6 with 2 minutes to go felt unlikely to be overcome, and we managed somehow. Kovacevic got a nice steal, still not sure where he came from or what he was even doing under our basket on their inbound pass but he grabbed it and laid it in to tie it with 36 seconds to go and we inexplicably blocked their go-ahead shot. We couldn't score with the few seconds we had left, but we got it to OT. They started 2/2, which just made me roll my eyes, but then they went cold finally. That gave us the chance to get ahead by 2, then we did a good job making all the FT's at the end to close it out.

Reporter: If your team can come back and survive that kind of shooting, are you sure anyone can beat you?

Tovarich: Of course they can. This is why we play these games. Notre Dame shot like this against us in the second half too. We survived that with FT's, we survived this with a big FT disparity. That isn't always going to work out. Somewhere the refs won't give us a 20-0 FT advantage like we had in Maui or 26-7 like we had today. We dominated the boards today too, which is extraordinary considering how few misses we forced in the second half. We should rightly have been killed in that statistic. We shot 3's like garbage today. The big guys dominated. If they had even just an above average night scoring, we'd have lost. It was an unlikely win. We're really good at figuring something out. Someone will usually come through. We'll focus on what's working and take advantage, but it won't always work out for us. We're way above what you can reasonably expect there at my time at Georgia. Someone'll get us. But overcoming performances like that, like what got us in the NCAA tournament last year, is why we play all these road games against good teams, so we know we can do it and how to do it.

Reporter: What did you think of your team's unusually high turnovers?

Tovarich: Yeah, 13 might be a record in my career. Whatever their full court press was, it was very annoying, and it never stopped. We were trying to make the long passes over it like we do against the half court trap, but we got a lot of those intercepted. That wasn't the right strategy. I'll have to figure out what it was they did and we'll need a new plan if we see that one again.

Reporter: The in-season signing period is about to open. Do you expect to sign anyone?

Tovarich: I'd love to get one, but I don't think so. It's the long game as usual for all those guys.

Tovarich: We picked the right time to play probably or worst game of the season. It was a pretty low energy effort. Maybe there was some letdown after the Texas Tech comeback game, emotionally draining probably. If we played anyone decent tonight, they'd have beaten us with our C- game. Luckily it was just Minnesota.

Reporter: Are you confident enough in your team's ability now that you don't need to full court press down 3 baskets in the second half?

Tovarich: It was early, so no, I didn't feel like that was necessary. If we got past the halfway point of the 2nd half and we were still down 3 scores, I'd have worried. I know they can play their way out of it, even if it was just barely.

Reporter: You tried the other Sanderson as the late FT shooter. Have you settled on anyone for that role in close games?

Tovarich: No, not really. I don't have anyone all that reliable. Sometimes I feel best about my big guys. That only happens when we force a miss and they get a rebound. In past years, I'd often have called a timeout before they were fouled to inbound it to a guard, but none of my guards inspire a lot of confidence in me at the line like Kovacevic and Moody do.

Great record, though a few close calls so far. Georgia may be #1 and 9-0, but I am sure that the local news media still doesn't notice as the football team is probably 9-4 and must be paid attention to.

Tovarich: Wow, crazy start to that one. It was hard not to feel defeated down 32-12. We got 3 of our first 4 shots in the paint blocked. They started 12/16. We started 4/16. Every block/charge call was against us. We were turning it over. Nothing was going right. Then all of a sudden we go on a 19-0 run and we end up eeking out a 1-point lead at halftime.

Reporter: Are you sure you won't go undefeated?

Tovarich: Yeah, we did this last year too. We got out of some tight situations and pulled a win out of our backside. Eventually the luck runs out. There's skill to winning close games with strategy and clutch shots. There's luck. There's good players taking over and coming back from 20 down. There's opposing coaches who get away from what was working and let you back in for some reason.

Reporter: How did they do that?

Tovarich: Those two guards were each 3/3 on 3's and most of those were before halftime. I think between them they only shot one in the 2nd half. Keep your foot on the pedal. They should never have done anything else until they actually missed. Their press eventually stopped being effective, but they took too long to get out of it. We pressed back of course when you're way down like that, and we got some turnovers to get back in it.

Reporter: Quite a few coaches complain about the FT disparity you always seem to enjoy.

Tovarich: Yeah, we've had some nice lopsided ones like today with the 23-2 advantage. I guess the SEC refs came with us. I don't know why that is. We're aggressive with the big guys and a lot of people just try to jump shoot over us, so maybe they ought to re-think their strategy and get themselves to the line.

Reporter: No signees during the in-season period?

Tovarich: Nope. We have a lot of space on our board as usual. We'll try to cobble some recruits together. I would be stunned if we used all 6 scholarships. Maybe we'll get 4-5 that are worthy and carry one or two over and go harder for a couple select players next year.

Ha, yes. The 2018 Georgia football team would be getting ready for an SEC championship game a few days after this Northwestern game. I've cleverly stayed away from home for a month by sending us on a never-ending road trip. Now we go home for Georgia Tech 2 days after the SEC championship and maybe we're worthy of being noticed now. I didn't want to beat the football jokes to death in the questions so I stayed away from those this season even though that's probably how it'd have gone.

Tovarich: Does anyone need SEVEN point guards? They had some good shooting performances, they just are apparently indecisive about which of their 9 guards to put out there.

Reporter: Was there a plan on offense besides Moody?

Tovarich: Yeah, mix in Kovacevic and Deren occasionally. If you're going to construct a roster with only 2 PF's and we get them both in foul trouble, you have nothing to stop us. All in all, the big guys were mediocre at shooting tonight. Considering who was guarding them, it was maybe below average but they were plan A, plan B, then plan C. To beat us with a roster of 9 guards, you better shoot the lights out and 5-19 on 3's is far from that. They still hung in there well enough because we missed too many easy shots. But in the end, they never really threatened to win. They got to the national championship game with this setup, so maybe that doesn't dissuade them, but I know it's not going to beat us often. In the Center-less ACC, that's probably a fine strategy though.

Reporter: Speaking of that, Boston College next only has 2 PF and no C. Will the plan be the same?

Tovarich: Carbon copy of tonight. They have 3 SF's at least, so there won't be some little pipsqueak PG trying to post up Moody and kicking him in the shins while he tries to turn around and lay it in.

Tovarich: That was over pretty quickly.

Reporter: Do you think the other coaches will ever catch on and change their ways?

Tovarich: Not likely. I know good centers are hard to come by in recruiting, but the world has too many PG's.

Reporter: Is it true that you've only offered 1 of your 6 scholarships?

Tovarich: Yeah, we had to regroup after the in-season signing period was such a disaster. We're still trying to scout out who's worth signing and who isn't. The assistants are needed for that one. I don't really bother with scouting. I'm all in on my recruiting pitch and developing the skills. It's literally the one weakness in my coaching I have to rely on the assistants for.

Tovarich: Gosh, where to begin...I should amend a previous statement I made about a month ago when I said Minnesota was our second worst non-conference opponent. I assumed Towson was the worst. Minnesota is quite the worst, by far. Towson's better than 5 SEC teams. Combine that with the magic of tournament semifinals that I've experienced a good dozen times, and it was almost a magical upset for them. Kovacevic hit the hook shot with 2 seconds to go. And luckily it was 2 flat because they made the usual full court pass and that guy hit the 3 but the buzzer had gone off just a tenth or two before. Same thing happened to us before halftime with Sanderson's that went in. So fair's fair there. If there was 2.2, he'd have nailed that for the win because none of their guards could miss. That Udezue guy averages 6.8 ppg and went for 30 today. Total insanity. If they'd won, they probably should have renamed the university in his honor for the crazy game. And everyone he passed to couldn't miss either. We're lucky their center was a total miss on every shot. They killed us on the boards though. We're lucky to survive such insane shooting. I thought we might be done down 14 in the first half, which was 2 or 3 difference occasions.

Reporter: Does your team believe they can come back from any situation and win?

Tovarich: They've done it just about every which way possible these last two seasons, so it's hard not to. But sometimes we've run into teams with these crazy shooting numbers and couldn't get out of it. 2 of our 3 losses were at the buzzer last year accompanied by 60+% shooting and we almost got that today, they were just a tenth or two too late.

Reporter: Is the team looking ahead to the Game of the Century next week?

Tovarich: Oh please no, you football folks need to stop overusing that one. Don't bring it to regular season basketball now. We need to focus on the final tomorrow. I presume it'll be Rutgers, who already gave us a reasonably tough game up at their place early.

Reporter: How big will the Game of the Century be?

                        Tovarich: (glares)

Reporter: It's the most important game in the history of Georgia basketball coach!

Tovarich: It's not a conference game. It'll perhaps be a preview of a meaningful game in April if we're lucky. The result now is not that important.

Reporter: It's the Game of the Century coach!

                        Tovarich: Happy New Year everyone.

Tovarich: Bizarre ending. I'll take it, but very surprising how it all finished. I thought they tied it up with 35 seconds to go. I guess his foot was on the line, so we were still up 1. They started the fouling, but we were able to throw it into the back court and run around and waste some time and by the time they shuffled through all their fouls to give because the refs were so bias all game, we had run it down to 5.5. Sanderson hit both FT's to put us back up 3. We started with the fouling. We had 2 to give I think, unlike the 5 they had. They made a long pass down court but the guy was inside the arc, so they called timeout with 1.2 and ended up inbounding it to someone who was also inside the arc. By the time he passed it out to someone who was beyond the 3 line, time ran out. He missed anyway, which is refreshing. We're great at letting people score at the buzzer.

Reporter: Now that you've won the Game of the Century

Tovarich: OK, but really. Please kill that. College Football's regular season is way more important...as long as they don't go expanding their playoffs from 4 to 12 or some crazier number like 14. 1 vs. 2 in the first week of January means next to nothing when March and April come around.

Reporter: What did you think of your shooting?

Tovarich: Points in the paint felt hard to come by. I was surprised Moody only had 5 misses. It felt like more. We had 3 3's blocked. Deren struggled. Irakli was useless. He was in foul trouble all game on top of it. He had some steals, or that'd have been one of the all-time worst games I've ever seen. The other Sanderson was 5/7 on 3's and then cooled off. He should probably refrain from shooting 2's. Couple guys were on. The Seminoles shooting was a little better. We just outshot them somehow. That partly had to be all the FT's they were racking up compared to us because we got outrebounded and we were only +6 in turnovers.

Reporter: So what does the win actually mean?

Tovarich: That we're in good shape for the overall #1 seed, but that doesn't mean much. Any 1 seed works for me. It's all about the matchups and those are random. We could still get some crazy 8 or 9 seed who's rated higher than us, or a 5 seed in the Sweet 16 who shoots like crazy and beats us at the buzzer. There's no real advantage to being overall #1 except you get the worst 16. After the 1st round, everything's a dogfight usually.

Tovarich: Luckily we had built up a nice 17 or so point lead. We went pretty cold at the end and they were bombing 3's the entire game really. But especially there at the end. I don't know if 18? or 17? turnovers since the statistics are unclear there, is a record for a game where we never pressed, but it's gotta be up there.

Reporter: Who in the SEC will challenge you?

Tovarich: I don't know. I'm not much of a scouter. Vanderbilt's another flawed roster. I guess it's not a big deal to have no C if you have some height and depth at PF. But like many of the rosters with no C, they only had 2 PF's. And like Florida State and Georgia Tech, they start both PF's on the active roster. So, if one's in foul trouble or they both need a breather simultaneously, you're sending some SF out there. We always have a center on the floor. Worst case scenario, 6'11" Kovacevic can play there as a PF. There's always an advantage for us. So, the first thing required is semi-competent roster management, which apparently no one has. The alternative is shoot the lights out. Vanderbilt made 12 3's and barely made it interesting in the end because they shot poorly from inside the arc. Someone will get us because we play poorly most likely. Or some craziness at the buzzer. It could be anyone. Everyone in the conference seems competent except for Mississippi.
