Re: Coach Tovarich 2.0 CH2K8 Career Legacy

What did Coach Tovarich think of his time in Alaska? That's a long way to travel for some non-conference basketball.
?The Bulgarian Brothers - a story of two brothers (Oggy and Dinko) as they coach in the NCAA and the NBA.

?Ask me about the Xbox Ally handheld - I'm on the team that made it.

Tovarich: Nice win, I wasn't expecting it. I guess Gonzaga is a little down this year.

Reporter: How long will be Hollis be out?

Tovarich: Looks like about 3 weeks. He'll miss the Montana tournament, and then our first two conference games, and Michigan. He might be back when we go to Jacksonville State.

Reporter: What changes in the mean time?

Tovarich: Crenshaw and Stivers will both have to play a lot more, obviously. We may need to slow things down a bit to keep them fresh.

Reporter: Speaking of slowing things down, why didn't you today? You seemed happy to be in a track meet with Gonzaga.

Tovarich: I don't anticipate feeling the need to grind things to a halt against anyone in our pitiful conference, so it's not a skill set I feel we need. We ran with them, we drew a ton of fouls on their big guys and were able to take advantage until Hollis got injured.

Reporter: How did you feel about your FT shooting down the stretch?

Tovarich: Mbanugo missed the front end, we were lucky to get a miss. Then Crenshaw split the double bonus. We were lucky to force another miss, then Stivers split too to put us up 4. They got the 3 and Borders did a good job hitting his two to put us up 3 again. Then we were able to foul to force them to take a shot from half court.

Reporter: Mark Few thinks it was ridiculous you outshot them 29-8 at the line.

Tovarich: He should. They were the home team. Their big guys were on the bench for most of the first half and a little in the second. We must have brought our refs with us.

Reporter: Will you need Crosswhite to play now?

Tovarich: Nope. He's not a big guy, so he doesn't help down there. Brickens will have to play more. Crenshaw and Stivers will get more minutes. Other than Michigan, it's not a daunting 4 games so they should be more than capable of getting us through. Timeouts will be my friend.

Yeah, for a west coast guy, I've done a bad job making my way to the west, so I've seen most of the east coast schools. It was time for some new scenery. Too bad the game put that tournament at Eastern Washington, so I just kind of have to pretend it was where it was supposed to be. It's strange they can use the name of the tournament in commentary but then have to call it something else in the schedule.

Tovarich: Obviously when I said we'll slow things down to keep everyone fresh, I meant we'll get in the fastest paced, most helter-skelter game I've ever had at this school. Perhaps Longwood coach heard my comments about that being the plan and decided to full court press the entirety of the game to force us into a track meet. We shouldn't have taken the bait, but we did. Luckily they cooled off, outside of Allen Iverson-Evenstar because down 18-11 and all my starters exhausted, I was really wondering if we could ever catch up and simultaneously stick to the slow down plan.

Reporter: Did you ever think you'd take 28 3's in a game after last season?

Tovarich: Crazy huh. That's probably more than some 5-6 game stretches last year. They played such a soft 2-3 zone, we had people open, so we took them. I saw more 2-3 zone last season from the Ohio Valley schools than I ever had before. I'm not sure if it's a game plan people decide to employ against us, or I just keep getting lucky with Jim Boeheim wannabes.

Reporter: How much energy do you think the team will have tomorrow for the championship?

Tovarich: Luckily college kids are young and energetic. It's a brand new day and it'll be like they didn't play a game today and they'll be 100% ready to go.

Reporter: How did you decide to start Crenshaw over Stivers?

Tovarich: Yeah, the numbers say Stivers should start. I thought our team unity would be better. You replace Hollis who has 7 starts in his career and put in Crenshaw who started all 33 last year, and you expect team unity to go up and it just stays the same for some reason. Also I'm more familiar with his skill set, and he's a little unhappy with his playing time I know, and I don't want him to leave at the end of the year. Stivers is probably already a little unhappy. He thought he'd be transferring into a more playing time-friendly situation and it turns out he didn't really. But he's a SR, so I don't need to think long term with him. He's going to get more minutes, so that'll have to be enough for him.

            Tovarich: Fre...

            Reporter: Don't say it coach.

Tovarich: Fine. Pitiful performance. Of all the brutally awful rebounding games I've experienced as a coach, which are quite numerous, that is probably top 5. -24 against Northern Arizona is embarrassing.

Reporter: Would Hollis have made a difference?

Tovarich: I don't see how he could've. The shooting was awful too. They were on fire from 3 for a while there. They cooled off at the end, but it made no difference by then.

Reporter: Does the win over Gonzaga make up for it?

Tovarich: That's a win you don't expect. Sacred Heart and Northern Arizona are losses I don't expect. Gonzaga's unfortunately not looking like a top 25 team like we thought, but still nice. I know there'll be some bumps in the road with all the freshmen, and this was one for sure, but they still aren't fun.

Reporter: The signing window is about to open. Do you expect to sign anyone?

Tovarich: I think we'll have a solid SG coming in tomorrow hopefully. He's supposed to be a better shooter than Buckman, so hopefully that translates to his 3 point shooting and we can start him next year. Other than him, I have one scholarship out on a PF, but we may never be able to sign him at all. I'm holding on to the other two for now. We'll look around in about 3 weeks once the post in-season window adjustments are made and schools put out their new offers. I'm still not sure this 4th scholarship isn't some kind of test from the NCAA to make sure we don't end up with 14 scholarship players.

Tovarich: Wild game. I thought we were done at 18-4. We were 1/11. They were 8/13. Rebounds were 8-3. We'd be stuffed repeatedly in the paint. I'm not sure how they were only credited with 6 blocks. It was 12. It was crazy defense apparently. FT's were 21-8 until we got the 4 intentional ones at the end. Best player is out. We clawed back and lead a bunch of times, and then couldn't hit a layup for the umpteenth time. Then we come back again. Mbanugo pretty much shot us to a win there. Crenshaw was getting destroyed in the paint. Stivers did a decent job. Everything was a foul on us. Nothing was a foul on them. I see how Mark Few felt against us. I thank them for playing so much 2-3 zone, as everyone seems to like to do with us. And it was like having Tamayo at Western Kentucky again. We needed every one of them.

Reporter: How effective was your press today?

Tovarich: I'm not sure. Down 18-4, we didn't have much of a choice. I'm not sure we got any steals, but we hit 4/5 3's and got back into a 27-27 tie. Then we took it off and they went on a run immediately. I told them to do it occasionally. I'm not sure who decides what occasionally is, but somehow they all magically knew.

Reporter: You looked excited with the jump ball with 20 seconds to go.

Tovarich: Yeah, jump balls are so few and far between, I really don't have a mental idea of whose arrow it is. I thought we had a huge chance to hold for the last shot after tying it with 33 to go. But they got it back. We got lucky they missed the jumper from the corner. They should have gone to their center on every possession. We'd have lost by 30.

Reporter: Can you believe how long you were able to run around and avoid being fouled in overtime?

Tovarich: Lots of things in overtime surprised me. We got the one big steal with about 2 minutes to go up 2. Then we hit a 3 and went up 5. After we traded misses, we got a huge offensive rebound to run more time off. They got to within 3 with 38 seconds to go, and they got the first foul real quick in the back court. It's hard to get away in the back court. They're on you like glue. But Borders was able to sprint and get past half court and force the foul over there. Then they are really dumb to let you throw it into the back court and not get close to you. So we bait the PG back, and then run around him and past midcourt and wait for them to get close and call a timeout. I think we did 3? times. Bafflingly bad coaching by them. So we got it from 38 down to 2 seconds, Borders made both. Then apparently occasionally press meant up 5 with 2 seconds to go and they threw it out of bounds and we were able to get 2 more FT's with .1 to go. The irony of them having to foul 4 times to get us to the line in OT brings me great joy. Then combine the bad coaching to let us run around and it ends up in an unlikely win. The refs tried their best. Maybe they'll get us another day.

Tovarich: I didn't expect many easy games without Hollis. I'm grateful they had an off shooting night. One of the worst I've witnessed in a long time.

Reporter: Is rebounding still a concern?

Tovarich: Always. +3 in a game where we missed 14 shots and they missed 34 is pitiful.

Reporter: We can always hear you in timeouts talking about rebounding. Do you think they're tuning you out because it's all you ever emphasize?

Tovarich: Based on the stats, yes. But I'll keep doing it.

Reporter: Might you sign another player before the in-season window ends tomorrow?

Tovarich: I doubt it. Everyone else dropped off this PF but I don't think we have a chance to get him yet. Hopefully no one else figures out he's there and blows by us as the season goes on.

                    Tovarich: (laughs and shrugs)

Reporter: Coach Beilein is irate with the refs.

Tovarich: He should be. That was fixed I think. Even if the 21-1 FT's didn't feel fixed, that was a dubious goaltending call they gave us to win it with 3 seconds in OT on a ball that obviously had already been missed too. I think that's a first for me to win in that way.

Reporter: How much energy do you think you had for another overtime?

Tovarich: Probably as much as they did. They only played 8 people as well, so they weren't any fresher.

Reporter: You buried your head in your heads a few times in the second half. What were you thinking?

Tovarich: The shooting was abysmal. 0-7 on 3's. We started 0/5 in the paint. Later we were 2/10. Then things improved slightly. 9 of those 23 points in the second half were at the FT line.

Reporter: What about at the end of regulation?

Tovarich: That was for letting them get the offensive rebound with 20 seconds to go. We timed it so we had the ball at the end, and not being able to get a rebound ruins that. We were lucky they missed. I hate not being in control at the end like that.

Reporter: You were in control in OT at the end. Was Stivers always the plan?

Tovarich: Yep. He missed a few in the paint early too, but he got better after. He still missed. We got lucky with the help of the refs. That whole game seemed fixed for us.

Reporter: Will Hollis be back for Jacksonville State?

Tovarich: I think so. We went 4-1 without him just as I'd hoped. Funny game to lose to Sacred Heart and Northern Arizona but beat Gonzaga and Michigan, down as they both seem to be.

Tovarich: Fortunate opponent. An 0-9 team was exactly what Hollis needed to get back into things. He missed his first 3 in the paint, just like Stivers did. But then they found it as the game went on.

Reporter: Did all the yelling about rebounding get through finally?

Tovarich: Something did. We were being outrebounded 13-3 to start the game. Then we ended up -2 only, so things improved after that. The neverending offensive rebounds were embarrassing. We stayed in with Mbanugo's 3 point shooting to offset some of the pitiful rebounding.

Reporter: There are four pretty unhappy players on the team. Do you plan to give them a pep talk?

Tovarich: Nope. Crosswhite's a SR anyway and the other three would be wise to transfer. My job's to win games, and they're not going to be winning us any games after this season. My job's not to spare their feelings. I need better players in here to use up those 3 scholarships. Cutting them won't speed it up, so being unhappy here is a good reality for them. They should continue their careers elsewhere.

Reporter: Who gets all the pep talks then?

Tovarich: Had to use a few on Hollis. I'm not sure why being injured made him lose confidence, but it did, then Crenshaw gets them so he isn't too bummed about not starting anymore.

Tovarich: I'm pretty sure I've watched other team go 19/21 shooting to start a game, but I doubt I've ever seen it for our side. Crazy. We couldn't do a lot wrong today except refuse to defend Reggie Miller over there who tried to keep them in it.

                          Reporter: Can Borders dunk?

Tovarich: I have to think not. All ten of his baskets were on breakaways, whether it be from steals or from the highly ineffective man to man full court defense they were trying where he just ran by the opposing PG, and he layed them all in, so I'm guess he can't.

Reporter: Does Brickens have any purpose in the half court offense?

Tovarich: Nope. He's there to break the 1-2-1-1 press and that's it. I've been thinking about moving Crenshaw into the starting PF spot. We've got nothing but conference games left and since our conference has got to the worst in America, I doubt it matters, but I may do it anyway.

Reporter: Do you expect to go 20-0?

Tovarich: We're still all FR and low on team unity so I expect a clunker somewhere, but this conference has a grand total of 28 wins if you don't count us and 14 of those are conference wins, so 1.4 OOC wins per team? Brutal. If we can lose to Sacred Heart and Northern Arizona, we sure can lose to some of these guys too. We'll see if we still have a Tennessee Tech problem. I don't think they have much back from last year, but first, we're focused on Murray State, who went from running it up on us in overtime to the second lowest rated team in America, so I look forward to that game first and making a point at the end if possible.

A couple really good wins to start the season. This is definitely a new Morehead State team.

Tovarich: Good win. Nice round 50 points. Somehow I don't think Murray State coach got the point, but I feel better.

Reporter: Did you need to start full court pressing them with 12 minutes to go?

Tovarich: Correction. THEY started full court pressing. Then I returned the favor.

Reporter: They were down 20 though.

                                Tovarich: Yep.

Reporter: Did you need to call a timeout to sub your starters back in with 39 seconds to go?

Tovarich: Yeah, that was critical. We finished strong on a nice 7-0 run there in those 39 seconds. I'm just sorry Mbanugo missed the 3 at the buzzer or it would've been 10-0.

Reporter: Do you think you'll ever make the mid-major top 25?

Tovarich: Maybe eventually. I tried to get some decent teams on the schedule and some of them turned out to be pretty disappointing. Sacred Heart and Northern Arizona are both 4-8 so those are both pretty bad. It makes no difference really. We need to win the 3 games in Knoxville or it all matters for nothing.
