Reporter: Were you not expecting to win coach?

Tovarich: No, that too.

Reporter: What else do you look confused about?

Tovarich: Winning rebounding, having someone with a double double, how bad the other team shot that I'm pretty sure we had nothing to do with, how we average 1,332 fans a game but when we got a neutral court in another state, we sell out a much bigger arena somehow. It all makes ya wonder.

Reporter: How big is it to win a tournament coach?

Tovarich: I've won a couple dozen I imagine. I love Dr. Pepper, but with all due respect, it's not high on the list.

Reporter: Do you have higher expectations for this team now that you're on a 4-game winning streak and have a winning record?

Tovarich: 17-64.

Reporter: Do you love 3's again?

Tovarich: I see a team playing exclusive zone and I just can't help it I guess. Atako had a decent game from out there. It didn't quite give me flashbacks to Tamayo at Western Kentucky, but it was nice. We've had I think 3 games this year where we only made one, and that Eastern Illinois game I think it took until there were 2 minutes to go. I doubt I've ever coached a team that didn't make a 3 but this team sure looks capable of that.

Reporter: Are we gonna win the conference coach?

Tovarich: Are you gonna make me say it?

Reporter: Say what?

Tovarich: 22-73.

Reporter: Is that a yes?

Tovarich: No.

Reporter: How'd you beat the best team in the conference at their place then?

Tovarich: We had a flukish 3-point shooting night. I mocked zone teams when I was at Western Kentucky because we usually had an elite 3-point threat. It's not a bad plan against this team. We hadn't done anything to make you believe we can hurt you with 3's to this point. They also were a bit sloppy with the ball. Despite their rating, they're under .500 and they only play 8 people so they lack depth obviously. It's a crap conference we play in, but we're just on right now, and I can't explain why.

Reporter: How long can it go coach?

Tovarich: Who knows. I started 3-5 in the SEC with Georgia and we inexplicably won 8 in a row after that. I'm not sure what the cause is. The conference is pretty awful, but we're also awful. I'm sure we'll all get a good reminder of that some time.

Reporter: Jax State coach was upset with the FT disparity. What did you think?

Tovarich: He should be. 24-4 for the road team is pretty insane. I've probably seen worse, but it was baffling.

Reporter: Their coach seemed to be trying to get the crowd to litter the court when they disagreed with a call to see if the refs would then change it for no reason.

Tovarich: That only works in SEC football.

Reporter: Is your team secretly good and you've just been lowering expectations?

Tovarich: No. Our schedule outside of the 2 money games is probably one of the easiest in the country. Everyone else in our conference sucking doesn't make us suck any less.

Reporter: Losing?

Tovarich: We have 3 games this week so I have no time to recruit.

Reporter: But what about the loss? Wasn't it tough?

Tovarich: We're doing way better than we should be.

Reporter: Do you put the loss on Crenshaw for missing the point blank shot that would've put you up 1 with 7 seconds to go?

Tovarich: Without his 43 points, we'd not have been that close.

Reporter: So what was it?

Tovarich: Mostly an inability to rebound. That's somewhat on Crenshaw. We even had their big guys in foul trouble the entire game. PG's would run in there and grab boards amongst all our big guys. It was some of the most pitiful rebounding I've experienced and I am like -1000 in rebounds in my career I bet.

Reporter: This is the second time you didn't hit your first 3 of the game until near the end. Have you abandoned 3's?

Tovarich: Well, we made the one at least. I haven't had a game in my career without one, but we saved it for 3 minutes to go, almost like Eastern Illinois where we had it with 2 to go. It's not our strength. We'll do it against the zone, but Crenshaw is the offense. That won't change.

Tovarich: Good win. They had a bad shooting night. Happy?

Reporter: Are you sure Crenshaw shouldn't keep starting at C next year?

Tovarich: He could maybe be the PF if I can't get a good one. We lose all 3 we have. I am sure our Dayton transfer is better, but a 2* true FR can do a lot in a bad conference with no other real good big men. Murray State's is a 3* C, though I assume he's usually better than he was tonight. The one for Austin Peay is supposed to be the best, but he had a so-so night against us too. We have no outside shooting threat, so he's plan A, and B and C and then I begrudgingly move on to something else if I have to, so the stats are going to look great, at least in terms of scoring. His rebounding is below average, but that's probably some curse I have.

Tovarich: That one may not have put people to sleep but it had to be hard to watch. That was Ohio Valley basketball in its truest form, utter ineptitude.

Reporter: Is it meaningful to win a close game?

Tovarich: In a way, because that's our first single-digit win, but we were up 7-9 most of the second half and let them back in it at the end. The layup they got at the buzzer made it look closer than it really was.

Reporter: This is the first time you've had to shoot some FT's at the end of a game. Is Ravello going to the designated person to take those?

Tovarich: Because of that scenario never having come up, I haven't given it much thought. Our guards don't take many FT's. The big guys get all of them, so there's such a small sample size. I think I may try Lemons or Gomes. Ravello's barely .500. Atako is a possibility. It took 19 games for this situation to come up though. It may not again.

Tovarich: I knew this team would do it eventually.

Reporter: Come back and win a close game at the end?

Tovarich: Miss all their 3's. 456 games in a row my team made one. Now I have to start a new streak.

Reporter: So how about the close win, coach?

Tovarich: Yeah, good win. Thought we were done down 58-51 with 5 minutes to go. Put the press on, got a couple steals I think. Mostly it just sped them up and they missed almost every shot for the rest of the game.

Reporter: So is Atako the FT guy at the end of games?

Tovarich: I think so. He might be banned from 3's soon. So much for my theory about how that might not come up again. He bounced the first one in, but it went on and made the second. Crenshaw got a nice rebound and he made the first of the front end.

Reporter: Will you shoot fewer 3's now?

Tovarich: Already have been. Even a 2* FR C dominates this conference, so we can focus on that as the plan. I look forward to starting a new streak though. They're still important.

Tovarich: Good win. Questions?

Reporter: What changed at the end of the first half when you finished on a 16-2 run?

Tovarich: They were playing a lot of 2-3 zone and trying to bait us into taking all those nice shiny 3's and we took the bait repeatedly and it didn't work. We also did a terrible job rebounding and they got a lot of putbacks. We even got their center in foul trouble, and like usual, we don't really take advantage of it on the boards. Obviously when it came to scoring we did though.

Reporter: When did you feel their comeback happening?

Tovarich: When Stokes was driving in for a fairly easy layup and some dinky little SG runs in out of nowhere and stuffs him and then they hit a 3 at the other end. I think we missed our next 6 shots after that.

Reporter: How did you get back in it at the end?

Tovarich: We finally started hitting those point blank shots and we got 3 or 4 offensive rebounds there. Crenshaw I don't know if's had 12 boards yet, but they were huge.

Reporter: You go up 3 with 38 seconds to go, are you surprised they went for a 2?

Tovarich: Yes, that was baffling, especially since they had 3 fouls to give. So we were able to run around and avoid being fouled and widdled it down to .5 to go before they could get us to the line.

Reporter: Concerned that Atako missed the front end even though it didn't matter with so little time left?

Tovarich: He's 1/3 in these situations, so that's not encouraging. Maybe we'll try Gomes next time. We still won though, when it's hard to say we deserved it, so it all worked out. I'll go with my gut on that. He's mostly done shooting 3's though.
