Tovarich: Another game where it seemed pre-destined that we'd lose by 1 point. 0% on shots that would give us the lead or tie it. Zero Percent. Thought we had an easy layup, but the blocking foul was mysteriously not a shooting foul hahahahahahahahaha. It was the most laughable, homerific call I've ever seen. Then we miss the layup after the throw in. Why? Because we'd have taken the lead. That wasn't allowed. Tyson had all 4 of his 3 attempts blocked hahahahahaha. We haven't had four 3's block this YEAR. It's like it was automatic that if he attempted a shot, someone would fly in and block it. That's one I've never seen in my 38 years here at Eastern Shore.

Reporter: What was the plan on the last possession?

Tovarich: It made no difference. We weren't going to make it anyway. Every miss was predictable. Their offensive rebounds in the missed shots were predictable. The made shots after we tipped a pass and they got it back were predictable. Our missed layups were predictable. There was nothing we could do.

Reporter: Does the team just need some pep talks?

Tovarich: I was trying to save those for the very end and the conference tournament. And I'm using some trying to see if I can keep Krleski on the team for next year. I'm pretty over this year all of a sudden. We've been cursed by someone.

Reporter: You're still better than last year.

Tovarich: That's not saying much. We were the worst team in the nation on paper and now we're allegedly the best team in the conference, and in 4th place.

Reporter: Is the youth of this team the main reason for the inconsistency?

Tovarich: Yep. It's not enough that young players are generally rated lower than most of the older ones. We lack togetherness and unity and I don't expect it to be a whole lot better next year, so maybe in 4 years we'll be allowed to play like we're supposed to.

Tovarich: Obviously we couldn't do much wrong tonight. They couldn't do much right. We had a lot of frustration from the 3-game losing streak to take out. Hopefully we didn't use up all the good shooting.

      Reporter: Was this game fixed?

Tovarich: They probably feel that way. The margin was a bit high but I'd like to think we're significantly better than them. They just walked into a buzzsaw.

Reporter: It was just layups against the break mostly, but your big guys collectively shot almost 90%.

Tovarich: Yeah, I know they were down, but the press isn't often effective against us. They were +1 in turnovers. That's rare for us to lose the turnover battle, but we never pressed obviously. I'm not gonna rub it in.

Reporter: Can you carry any of this over into some more positive momentum?

Tovarich: I've been around this game long enough-like 60 games-to know there's no such thing. We can turn right around and give up 70% shooting to...whoever we play next.

Tovarich: Just another day being +16 in turnovers and +9 in shots to eek out a 2-point win over a 62% shooting 6-14 team.

Reporter: How important was getting their starting C in foul trouble early?

Tovarich: Critical. Probably the difference in the game. Getting him 2 fouls in 2 minutes and sitting him until the second half was huge. He grabbed 8 boards in the second half alone in yet another non-existent rebounding effort by us. Of course, they shot 62% to our 47% so we gave them a lot more rebounding opportunities with all our misses. We just had to just stop them getting across half court with all their sharpshooters.

Reporter: Their PG was a real mix.

Tovarich: Yeah, he really covered the spectrum. All 7 of his points came in the first 3 minutes of the game. Ton of assists but a ton of turnovers too. He found the two guys who seemingly couldn't miss a lot but he threw it away a lot too.

Reporter: Would you like to compliment the refs?

Tovarich: They did their job for once.

Tovarich: Most incredible transformation I've ever seen. From leading 29-11 to getting outscored 78-53 for the rest of the game. I guess when you're 9-14 and you're just bored, you spot the other team 18 to make it interesting. It was incredible how they scored 12 consecutive possessions and we missed 8 layups in a row.

Reporter: Why do you think you blew the big lead?

Tovarich: Because they wanted us to.

          Reporter: Who?

          Tovarich: The fixers.

Reporter: You normally have few turnovers. What did they do to force 11 from you?

Tovarich: They were amazing to deflect so many passes and we never got one back. We deflected 20 of theirs easily and most of them went right back to them. And then I think they shot 100% after that.

Reporter: How did they out-rebound you 2-1 despite you getting all their bigs in foul trouble?

Tovarich: The excessive and predictable offensive rebounding is all part of the fix. Anyone can see it coming too. They got all 4 of their missed FT's back and got easy putbacks on all of them. All part of the script.

Tovarich: Shockingly Montrimas never fouled out by calling 4 on him in the 1st half and just 1 on their entire team was laughable. Don't know why the refs really hate us sometimes.

Reporter: Are you concerned another team shot 60% against you?

Tovarich: Always. Almost everyone does. They were rather pedestrian in the second half after their 64% in the first.

Reporter: You were unusually conservative in the second half, why?

Tovarich: After just blowing an 18-point lead, sure, I got a bit conservative with a 10-12 point lead. When we got an offensive rebound, which I think we got 5, I told them to run off another 30. Didn't even care if we scored, just run the clock down.

Reporter: You're now on the road for the top 2 teams in the conference. Can you still get back in for the 1 seed?

Tovarich: We're 2 games behind Hampton, so we'd need help either way, but with our lowly team unity, what chance do we really have of winning out?

Tovarich: Wow, that one was a new standard for craziest transformation at halftime.

Reporter: What was your message at halftime?

Tovarich: I went to the concession stand at halftime and got some pizza. I told them I went to look for some basketball players. I guess they got the message.

Reporter: You did nothing different on defense to cause them to shoot only 40% in the second half after 70% in the first?

Tovarich: Not really. We were pressing after baskets in the first. You just have to actually make some baskets occasionally. Us being 0-8 on 3's and 10-29 total didn't lend to many times being able to set up the press. And we probably made 4 of those 10 before I set the press up since we were in it at the beginning. It literally took one 3 to go in and everything changed and we flipped the switch and the barrage of turnovers was incredible.

Reporter: The bench scored 33 in 9 minutes. Don't you think sometimes they deserve more minutes?

Tovarich: That's obviously not normal. We handed them a little momentum getting it from 19 down to 10 and they were tenacious on defense and they were nailing the 3's. Many times, they score almost nothing if Krleski and Tyson miss a couple shots.

Reporter: Howard played exclusively man in the first half, why do you think they switched?

Tovarich: No idea. And I still haven't figured out if it was a 1-2-2 or a Box and 1. For all intents and purposes, it makes no difference really but it left a lot of people open for 3's even though I feel we were getting good looks on the first 8 we missed in the first half too.

Reporter: You're still 2 games behind Hampton and you head there next. Is the 1-seed still possible and how critical is that game?

Tovarich: I'm not sure we can catch them. South Carolina State for the 2-seed is probably what's most important. We'll try to win but we'd still need some help so I'm not focused on the 1 seed.

Tovarich: Well, it's a win. I'm thankful they couldn't make a free throw. The refs must have wanted some camera time with 38 combined free throws. We shot efficiently from 3 and from the line. Lathum got some layups against the press. Took them 2/3 of the game to figure out that was a bad idea.

Reporter: When the opponent throws a lead pass into the paint, why does your players turn into ghosts?

Tovarich: I wish I knew. It defies all physics the way the ball bounces on it's way into the paint and then it and all my players seem to lose momentum and go into slow motion and someone runs around behind us and grabs the ball when it almost seemingly goes through us somehow.

Reporter: What percentage do you think your opponents shoot on reverse layups?

Tovarich: 99% at least and with a high degree of difficulty. I think we stumble our way into a block once without it being a foul, but the acrobatics are amazing to watch sometimes.

Reporter: This is the last week of recruiting. How do you feel about it this year compared to last?

Tovarich: This looks a lot more promising than last year did. I've improved my recruiting skills from last year a little. The interest from recruits seems a little bit better, still not great. We're going for a lot of guys with no offers but the player has other preferences. We just have to hope those schools use up all their scholarships and we'll back our way into a few. They could all disappear all of a sudden, but I don't feel so fatalistic like I did last year where I sort of only barely managed to pull in a few guys late in the offseason.

Tovarich: I can't believe their far superior team unity didn't seem to be a factor (rolls eyes). Nice to have an easy relaxing win. Hope we save this 3-point shooting for Raleigh though.

Reporter: Norfolk State coach thinks you held the ball excessively in the second half to keep their point total to an embarassingly low number.

Tovarich: (smirks) I didn't feel it would be classy to run up the score so I changed things in a way to make sure that didn't happen.

Reporter: Then why were you upset when they made a 3 in the last minute to get out of the 20's?

Tovarich: It was just bad defense to leave them open like that. I was more upset about them having 3 offensive rebounds on one possession, despite the fact that they still missed the 4th shot too and never scored.

Reporter: Your big guys kind of disappeared this game.

Tovarich: Montrimas did a disappearing act a couple weeks ago it seems and Houdini hasn't let him back out yet. Lathum's points are mostly dependent on being pressed and when the other team doesn't do that, he doesn't get so many layups. In our 4-out offense, the PF isn't going to see many looks in the half court offense unless I can find out who can shoot 3's well.

Reporter: Why do you think they had such a rough shooting night?

Tovarich: It wasn't much of anything we did on the jump shots at least. We had some nice blocks without fouling for once in our lives down low. Even though they start a SR at C, he didn't seem to have a lot of skill, so even Montrimas, who is usually pretty foul prone shut him down well.

Tovarich: That was one of the most inept games I've ever been apart of-both teams. Hideous to watch I'm sure for the several fans at the game. Apologies to all of them. I thought about sending the players into the crowd to apologize for it to each fan individually. A 5 minute delay getting to the locker room would've been ok.

Reporter: You've been EXTREMELY conservative in the second halves the last 3 games.

Tovarich: That 18 point lead we had is in the back of my mind. I slowed down @ Hampton because they kept making little mini runs to get back in it. Norfolk State I did to (cough) not run up the score, obviously. Today, it was just such horrendous shooting that I didn't want to watch anyone shoot.

Reporter: You made an obvious effort to get the ball down low to Montrimas, talk about his game.

Tovarich: I gave him a pep talk before the game, and thought it would get him going. 3/10 is obviously not that. All from 1 foot away too. His rebounding was solid, relatively speaking. He stands too far away from the basket on offense though. I'd rather he just park nearby. That's definitely part of the rebounding problem. 4 big offensive rebounds though, including with about 20 seconds to go to seal it, so at least he contributed something.

Reporter: The bench scored 11 in 5 minutes, an improvement over the ratio of the starters.

Tovarich: Yeah, they called so many timeouts and never pressed and we weren't in a hurry with a consistent 8-12 point lead, so no one ever got tired and I just felt more comfortable with them in. The bench did a good job in their 2 spurts on the court. Maybe Krleski shooting more would've been a good thing, but we won, we locked up at least 2nd. It's all good.

Reporter: You'll need help from Howard beating Hampton in the last game to have a chance at the 1 seed. Is that a big deal to you?

Tovarich: The tournament's at a neutral court, so it shouldn't matter as much, but a regular season sharing of the title and the 1 seed would be nice.

Tovarich: Good win. Got everyone in the scoring column. Even Montrimas who can't seem to find where to go on offense anymore. Got the 2 SR's some extra minutes out there for senior day. Their offensive rebounding was offensive. Green alone got 3 in the first 2 minutes, and another 2 on the same possession late. It's embarrassing. Still waiting on the Howard-Hampton game to be played, so don't know if we're going in as the 1 or the 2 seed.

Reporter: What do you have to do to get Montrimas scoring?

Tovarich: He needs to stop standing more than 5 feet from the rim for one. He's not allowed to shoot from that far away. He also needs to get it together on the boards too. He did ok at that last game, but 2 in 16 minutes for a big guy is pitiful, when his counterpart got 11 in 17. I know that guy is a SR, but it doesn't seem like much of an improvement on scoring or rebounding from him from the beginning of the season. He has gotten more blocks without fouling lately, so at least he's done something useful.

Reporter: If you don't end up in the tournament, is this season a disappointment?

Tovarich: I wasn't expecting to be there in Year 2 when I took over but since I found out we were allegedly the best team, then yes, it would be.

Reporter: It seems like McFadden will leave the team at the end of the year with the 2 SR's?

Tovarich: I think that's about 99%, yes. I guess Bright's going to stick around, but it's hard to imagine him on the roster next year. He'd be better off transferring because I imagine cutting him if he doesn't leave. He never started last year so I guess that's why he's not the only really unhappy one on the bench. McFadden is better served elsewhere as well. Krleski I hope stays. I've used a lot of pep talks on him. I'd like his 3-point shooting next year. There's always a place for that even though he definitely won't start.

Reporter: You've been conservative with this kind of lead in the second half lately, why not today?

Tovarich: If they had started inching closer, I may have had them clam up a little. But it didn't seem to be happening. Tyson and Krleski were hitting their shots, the bench was extending the lead. FAMU didn't have a lot of depth. I do it if it makes sense, but it didn't seem to today.

Tovarich: I assumed we were going to lose after about 3 possessions. It had that feeling to it. But despite getting outrebounded 40-19, which is insane, and despite Kobe Bryant going for 30, or their guy off the bench who had 9 rebounds in 8 minutes lol, Wiley shot us out of it. Crazy it took 18 extra shots and being +17 in turnovers.

Reporter: How ironic was it that they hadn't committed a single foul somehow in the second half, and therefore didn't have time to get the ball back for the last 20 seconds when you got the offensive rebound?

                              Tovarich: Hilariously ironic.

Reporter: You basically benched Walcott. That's not something you've ever really done before.

Tovarich: Yeah. He was broken. 2-11, 3 of which were layups. I even gave him a pep talk before the game. I thought he'd be feeling good about himself, and none of it took I guess. I don't have time for 2-11 in a game you have to win to extend your season though. Tyson looked broken too, so Krleski got the time and he made a few 3's at least.

Reporter: Is Montrimas ever going to be a serious contributer on offense?

Tovarich: I hope so. He's just a FR. I try to remind myself of that frequently, but I don't know. His ability to get pushed around by every other big guy is something that needs to change.

Reporter: Despite all the full court pressing, almost all the turnovers they committed were in the half court. Did you consider abandoning the press?

Tovarich: It got them to throw a couple away when they tried the baseball passes down to the center, so it was worth it. Probably enough to change the outcome, so it was necessary.

Reporter: Do you think it made a difference that for some reason, even though it's a neutral court, that Winston-Salem State as a 7-seed was the "home" team and you were the away team as a 2-seed?

Tovarich: It does seem to matter even on neutral courts. It shouldn't make a difference. It's also ridiculous that they were at home. But I believe the way the world "works", we'll be the road team the entire tournament no matter what seed we end up playing. If that's an indication of how it's going to go, I don't expect to be able to survive two more of those.

Tovarich: That game seems like a carbon copy of the first game and a carbon copy of both regular season games against South Carolina State.

Reporter: How were you feeling when you missed 4 point blank shots in a row in the first 90 seconds of the game?

                                Tovarich: De ja vu.

Reporter: Do you wish you could have gotten a tech when the fouls were 8-1 about halfway through the first half?

                                Tovarich: Absolutely.

Reporter: Have you ever seen a disparity in shots like that? You took 22 more than them.

Tovarich: Incredible they only took 25. Much of that was because of all the fouls in the first half where they went to the line. I don't think we made any magical adjustments but after they called 8 in 6 1/2 minutes, they didn't call one on us the remainder of the game. Then the turnovers. I think the press only forced about 4 of those. The rest was their predictable halfcourt offense.

Reporter: Do you think you'll always have to be plus double digits in turnovers to win games?

Tovarich: It sure feels like that. I sure wish I knew how to stop the other teams from shooting so well almost every game. Maybe when I have better players, I don't know.

Reporter: Do you have a preference who you play in the championship?

Tovarich: No. I expect an ugly 3rd game against whoever, just like these first two were.
