Tovarich: Good to get the first conference win. Even game until about 2 minutes to go when they suddenly couldn't hit a shot anymore. +11 in turnovers needed to squeak it out there, as usual. Embarrassing rebounding effort, as usual.

Reporter: How big was it to get a couple of their starters in foul trouble early?

Tovarich: Bigger than it should have been. Most of our opponents are crazy conservative about the fouls. With every team, 2 fouls in the first half in automatic sit until the 2nd half. Early 3rd is automatic sit for a while. It's very traditional, old school logic. I know I let Petrauskas foul out the one game, but he wasn't going to help any sitting on the bench for 10 minutes.

Reporter: Opposing centers don't seem to pile up the rebounds against you but the power forwards do. Why do you think that is?

Tovarich: I don't know. I'd like my center to be the big rebounder. He's the only one with the chance at offensive rebounds usually because everyone else is outside the arc. Maybe PF is where we're weaker than center even. On the boards, it all feels weak. They got a lot of offensive rebounds today, doesn't even matter if it's a guard in there, he'll get it over my big guys. I'll see if it improves if I ever coach and older, more experienced center, but these young guys I always have don't seem to figure it out.

Reporter: Would you win without mixing in the full-court press during the game?

Tovarich: Probably not often. I often feel like we need to take 10 extra shots to win a game.

Tovarich: I laugh because I could've told you after our 3rd shot that we'd lose. 0-3 to start in the paint. 3 layups. Missed. I think we went to halftime 3/14 in the paint. They shot 70% the first half. They then improved in the second. 27 turnovers and it barely ever got suspenseful, because it wasn't allowed to be. I mean, LOL. TWENTY SEVEN.

Reporter: You had a 3 to tie with 2 seconds to go.

Tovarich: We all know that never had a chance to go in.

Reporter: How shocked were you at the charge call?

Tovarich: Not at all. We're down 3, we still the inbound pass and try to take one step over to lay it in. BOOM. CHARGE. LOL. It wasn't allowed for us to score there. We were down 1 score, so we have to shoot 0%. That's how it is in these games. I expected a missed layup but they managed to toss in a new one, a laughable charge.

Reporter: Why not shoot more 3's like usual, especially when you miss over 20 shots in the paint?

Tovarich: We weren't really allowed to make those either.

        Reporter: But

Tovarich: (interrupting) It. Did. Not. Matter. What. We Did. Period.

Reporter: Why isn't it just that the other team was better?

Tovarich: Oh, they were amazing. Shooting 70% is one of those once a career kinda things for those guys. They'll probably never do it again as long as they're in school unless they compile enough games against us. We couldn't make a layup. It was their impenetrable defense. They blocked everything or forced us to miss from 1-foot away without really fouling us much, relative to how many times we drove the ball in. It was all amazing. All hail the 6-5 Troy Trojans, the best team ever.

Reporter: Anything else you'd like to complain about?

Tovarich: I gotta pace myself. I'll save some more for a different game.

Tovarich: Not a great shooting night. They weren't spectacular either. Neither team shot 3's very well. Kind of an ugly game, ugly win, but those count too.

Reporter: Is it preferable to have a dominant scorer or a team like this where lots of people contribute?

Tovarich: Options are good. If anyone gets hot, they could have a big game, but the outside shooting was rough tonight, so it was nice that the big guys did a pretty solid job scoring.

Reporter: How about the same question for rebounds?

Tovarich: It sure would be nice to have a dominant center who asserted himself in the paint, on both sides of the ball. Rebounding is kind of a group effort too, and that's less fun than scoring being a group effort. I'd like a tall 7 foot elite center who you can pencil in for 12-15 rebounds a game before it starts.

Reporter: Against the man press they ran the entire second half, it seemed like your PG had trouble getting by the defender. Do you think your team lacks speed?

Tovarich: It kind of does. Ryan was ahead, and then the PG would run around him, and the instant one hair on his body is ahead, it's like we come to a complete stop and it's an impenetrable wall. Same when driving in the lane. They run right by us just fine though (shrugs).

Tovarich: Good win. End of speech.

Reporter: What was good about it?

            Tovarich: That we won.

Reporter: What did you think of winning the rebounding?

Tovarich: They missed so many shots and were often taking 3's before half their players were anywhere near the rim, so not much. We also got their center in foul trouble early and they didn't have a lot of height after him. Good thing he was out, because after halftime, Petrauskas suddenly missed 6 shots in a row in the paint, so he piled up some points against the backup in the first half since the starter is apparently a tremendous defender to force all those point-blank misses.

Reporter: Nothing negative you'd like to complain about?

Tovarich: Of course I do. We had to play 3 games in 5 days this week, which means I had no time to recruit this week. We have other weeks with just one conference game, so there was no reason for this. I hope it doesn't cost us too bad and our recruits didn't forget about us while we were apparently too busy to even send an e-mail.

Tovarich: It was fun to play the Denver Nuggets in the second half. Maybe I'll protest the result of this game. LOL

Reporter: What do you think the opposing coach said at halftime to start the half on a 19-0 run and force you to miss your first 11 shots?

Tovarich: He called the Nuggets and told them to come on over.

Reporter: Despite their crazy run, you got back to within 2. Did you think you had a chance then?

Tovarich: Of course not. As soon as we got within 2, they made their next 10 shots in a row and we shot 2/15 to end the game.

Reporter: Why do you think you can be +10 in turnovers and take 11 more shots and still not be competitive?

Tovarich: Because the robots were programmed that way. Team Unity I guess. Whatever. 47-19 is the most lopsided half of basketball I think I've ever encountered in my life. Congrats to the Nuggets. I suppose we're lucky they only out-rebounded us 38-19 and outshot us 65%-38%. Good learning experience or something. I don't think this win should count for them in the standings though. They should at least have to play a professional team for it to count.

Reporter: What else do you think there is to try during a half like that?

Tovarich: It makes no difference. We missed 13 3's in a row. We tried to go down low and they blocked our first 2 shots. They stole the next 2 passes down low. There's nothing you can do when the opponents transform into an NBA team at halftime.

Tovarich: It's a good thing we shot so well from 3 and forced 15 turnovers since yet another team shot 65% and the rebounding was pitiful.

Reporter: Have you ever seen a center play 3/4 of a game and not get a single rebound?

                Tovarich: (shakes head) Baffling.

Reporter: Their two centers combined to go 12/12 shooting. Why don't you think they gave them more shots?

Tovarich: Also baffling. Bad coaching I guess. Should have just done it every possession. Petrauskas was nothing more than a traffic cone on defense and the boards. Evans played for 54 seconds and got a rebound.

Reporter: When they threw in a half court shot before halftime, what were you thinking?

Tovarich: I just kinda rolled my eyes at that. It was more how the 15 point lead was widdled down to 1. It gave me some de ja vu to the last game. Then we hit a couple 3's and had to get the press back going which I'd called off for a while.

Reporter: You seemed unhappy with the bench.

Tovarich: Yeah, wasn't feeling good about what they were doing. They got a few baskets in the last 2 minutes there, but during the very predictable run the Cajuns were making in the second half, they weren't doing anything well.

Tovarich: Their night was like our second half against Denver. Rough for them.

Reporter: New Orleans coach seemed upset about how many 3's you took.

Tovarich: That's our offense. It's especially our offense against the zone. Sorry he feels that way. We slowed it down quite a bit in the second half and the backups played a ton. There's not much I can do about their shooting night. I could've been like Denver and fired off a 3 with 3 seconds to go to rub it in, but I didn't do that because I assume that other coaches, like myself, remember those sorts of things. We're only scheduled to see New Orleans once unless we get them in the tournament, but I don't think he should be upset at me. We only took 4 more than them (shrugs).

Reporter: Why do you think this team is inconsistent?

                  Tovarich: Team Unity (rolls eyes).

Reporter: You seem to like that excuse.

Tovarich: It's like, the key to the entire universe sometimes. It's apparently really super important.

Tovarich: Jumped on them early and kept them mostly at an arm's length. Lots of good minutes for the backups and they did well. Good win.

Reporter: Do you think you can get an at-large bid to the tournament if you don't win the automatic bid?

Tovarich: With an RPI of 66, I'm starting to think not. I was feeling good when we went 12-0 in the OCC. Mississippi and Wake seem decent at 13-7. Penn State I saw just improved to 2-17. We could've gotten Louisville to help out the SOS but they managed to lose to Fairfield by 32, which seems rigged.

Reporter: When they got the lead down to 8, did you feel concerned?

Tovarich: I got the starters back in. I may have jumped on letting the bench take over the game too early. I didn't think it would be a New Orleans situation where the other team shoots 30% the entirety of the game, but I thought the backups could handle it. Needed just a little more from the starters though to feel good about it again.

Reporter: Some people who look into this sort of thing show that you actually have less team unity now than 2 games ago? Why is that?

Tovarich: I've accepted I know nothing about this togetherness thing. It has nothing to do with unity or togetherness as far as I can tell and it's just something about experience. Seems like 4 FR and a SO would have a team unity of 0 to start the season, but apparently that's impossible, so I have no idea. It's above my knowledge.

I didn't really think about playing my old team. Maybe next year, though I think I'd like to wait till my former players are gone. Then I won't feel bad for crushing them.

I think our best opponents were Mississippi and Wake Forest, but they turned out not to be rated any higher than we are. Troy's the next best team in the Sun Belt, about 4 points below us.

Tovarich: Gosh, I wouldn't want to be the 16 seed who has to play them in the 1st round. Oh, they're 10-10 and in 9th place? LOL. I'm not even sure what to laugh about the most. The guy with 26 rebounds. The guy who went 6-6 on 3's and 7-7 overall in just 11 minutes and scored 23 and also got fouled every time he missed. The part where we missed 15 3's in a row. The +9 in turnovers that we had that means nothing. We came in 3rd in rebounding. The one guy had 26, the rest of their roster had 24 and we only had 18 total. Greatest rebounder in the history of the world. Oh, he's a walk-on who only averages 5.2 per game? That's including today? LOL.

Reporter: Who was answering all your questions there coach?

Tovarich: Me. I can play media too and ask myself the questions.

Reporter: Would you like to claim the game was fixed?

                            Tovarich: Sure.

Reporter: And were the refs bias?

Tovarich: Fouls were 12-5. We're the home team. It would be nice to get a call occasionally. It would be nice if EVERYTHING didn't have to go wrong all at once. Maybe we just have one bad aspect in a night. It's crazy how literally everyone on the team falls apart on layups AND 3's AND rebounding AND the refs pile on. Luckily we finally hit a couple 3's at the end after their 20 points in a row and our 13 missed 3's in a row so the score doesn't look 10x more embarrassing than it does. Greatest 10-10 team ever. Too bad for them they don't get to play us a second time this year. That walk-on had 77 rebounds in 19 games and got 26 tonight. He'd be 1st team All-Century if he got to play us more.

Tovarich: Usual win. +15 in turnovers. +14 in shots and we week it out in the end making all 4 of our FT's late and hitting a clutch 3 at the right time (rolls eyes)

Reporter: Have you given up on the big guys and "devolved" as you like to say into just trying to shoot 3's every possession?

Tovarich: I can only watch so many missed layups. I can't stand watching a PF driving in, but some 5'6" PG cuts in front of him and my PF just almost falls backward because some tiny nobody stepped in front of him. I can't stand the lack of aggression. I can't stand the missing point blank shots all the time. I can't stand the inability to rebound. It's all infuriating. I wouldn't say we devolve into the 3's too often, although we did against Little Rock because that game was a joke, but that's the offense. If I ever coach a big guy who can function at his position even at an average quality, I'll maybe let them go more but as you can see from the rebounding and their center's scoring, we're grossly outmatched down low as we are 95% of the time.

Reporter: What were you thinking down 7-0 in the first minute?

Tovarich: That someone better hit a shot so we can get the press set up.

Reporter: Then what did you think when you were up 20-9 4 minutes later?

Tovarich: That their PG was a turnover machine. Partly he's so short, but even though they did a really good job breaking the press, he was turnover prone in the half court offense as well. You don't expect 9 turnovers from a SR, but I wouldn't expect to have to force an opposing PG into 9 turnovers just to eek out a close win at home (rolls eyes again).

Reporter: Why do you think you went 12-0 in the non-conference but are a disappointing 7-4 in conference?

Tovarich: I'd say familiarity but we're 4 FR in the starting 5 and no one in the conference knows me, so I don't know. The people who do the ratings say we should be 23-0 because we've been the better team in every game. Must be that team unity stuff.

Reporter: Won't you have amazing team unity in the next 2 years because they're all starting so young?

Tovarich: I wouldn't assume they'll all start again. We'll see how the 2 scholarships we have to use go and we may just constantly get younger. I'd like to make some improvements to the big guys for sure.

Tovarich: Happy to sneak out with a win. Missed the 3 at the buzzer in regulation, got it done in OT. Badly outrebounded again. Shocking, I know.

Reporter: What was the plan down 7 with 2 minutes to go?

Tovarich: Get a steal, maybe a breakaway layup if we'd be allowed to make one and get the press set up. Never got anything with the press, but we were aggressive going for the steals as we had fouls to give, and we were able to steal an inbounds pass and get a layup. Big 3 for Tamayo and then Stivers had his blocked at the buzzer. Couple misses from them were fortunate as well.

Reporter: The big guys struggled on layups again.

Tovarich: Yes, there's a reason we took 33 3's. I can only watch so many misses from 1 foot away. I'm at my quota...for...a while.

Reporter: Ryan didn't shoot many 3's the first 18 or so games, but seems to be taking a few here and there now.

Tovarich: Yes, admittedly, I would not allow him to take any before. There are a lot of better 3-point shooters on the team. He's realistically no worse than my two best guys at Eastern Shore were though and I let them shoot all the time. We needed all 8 of his points tonight, just to get to OT.

Reporter: You'd set up in the 1-3-1 zone sometimes, but you'd also audible out of it to man, what was the logic there?

Tovarich: Just trying something new. Wait for the PG to call a play and then switch. They were struggling from outside, so I wouldn't have been upset if they took a 3 on the zone either. Just trying to confuse them.

Reporter: Is revenge a factor in the game @ South Alabama?

Tovarich: I don't think so. We lost that one early, but it's just about winning for the sake of winning, not revenge. That'll be saved for the people firing off 3's at the buzzer when the game's in hand. Little Rock may have to wait a while for theirs if we don't see them in the tournament. Then Senior Day will probably be a bit more personal.
