Tovarich: Ugly shooting, but good win. Rare to get a power school to come to a place like this, so hopefully the fans enjoyed it.

Reporter: Both Riley and Marshall beat the press easily. Why do you think they didn't stop it sooner?

Tovarich: You'd have to ask them. I thought that was what one of the two timeouts they called in the first 5 minutes was for. We destroyed the press. We got maybe 3 turnovers from it, but we got a lot in the halfcourt defense. They were making a few too many passes and didn't really seem to find any urgency until it was too late.

Reporter: You were only -5 in rebounds. Does that seem promising against a power school?

Tovarich: I thought Shehan did a good job. They didn't have as much height as I'd have thought a big school would, so we'll see. I'm still holding off on judgment. They pulled the starting center pretty quick and put someone else in who did a better job rebounding, so I'm not even sure we were seeing their best center.

Reporter: Connecticut will be the first team you've played in your time here that is considered to be overall better than yours. Do you think it's a winnable game?

Tovarich: I don't know. I realize I likely scheduled a couple losses here with UConn, Texas and Cal on the road. If we get better at shooting than we've been these first two games, then maybe. Also imperative we don't run into any great big guys or any ridiculous efforts like UCLA in the tournament last year.

Tovarich: As I suspected, I scheduled a loss there.

Reporter: You lead 55-51. What changed that made them go on a 20-2 run?

Tovarich: Guess they just decided to stop messing around. There were some incredible things they did there. They got the 3 offensive rebounds in a row that lead to a foul on a made layup, missed the FT, got the offensive rebound and scored again for a 4 point possession. Then the alley-hoop they threw from behind half court that somehow seemed to defy gravity over my entire defense right to their one guy. Then there was the stretch where they made 8 shots in a row while we went 1-10.

Reporter: How do you think your big men rebounded against a big team?

Tovarich: Their PF who plays C with 13 boards is a true FR as well, and 5 inches shorter and yet outrebounded us and also blocked several of my 7 footer's shots. Incredible skill I guess. Shehan may be serviceable as a rebounded, but I've never seen a 7 footer so feebly attempting to go up with a shot. All 3 of his misses were blocked and then Riley of course managed to jump and try a finger roll that he couldn't get over the top of the rim somehow. I'll never figure it out I guess.

Reporter: Why do you think the team is struggling with their shooting so much?

Tovarich: No idea. We're allowing our customary 60% by the opponents, so no idea why we're so cold and our opponents aren't.

Tovarich: I apologize to anyone who watched that.

        Reporter: You won?

Tovarich: So? This team is broken. I expected to see a significant and noticeable improvement from last year. We're terrible. Tamayo is broken. I let him keep going at 0-10 just to see if it was humanly possible for him to make a shot. Petrauskas is so timid trying to shoot. I've given up understanding why no one just slams it down instead of all these cute little twirly shots and finger rolls. It's unwatchable. It's infuriating. We got outrebounded by Austin Peay. We don't know how to rebound. I expect I'll just never coach a team that knows how to rebound. It's pitiful. Not much of anyone can shoot from the outside. The big guys I can't watch shoot much more.

Reporter: So, what's your plan for improving?

Tovarich: I have no idea right now. We could've pressed some today, but it never felt necessary. It gets an occasional easy basket. We give up some easy baskets. I'd rather watch that than what I just saw though. I don't know what this team's problem is. It feels like everyone is struggling.

Tovarich: Good finish there. Close game until the end. Embarassing rebounding. Poor shooting from 3. I should just make a tape recording of all this stuff.

          Reporter: Was Tamayo's shooting encouraging?

          Tovarich: Not really.

          Reporter: Why couldn't you rebound?

Tovarich: If I knew the answer to that, I wouldn't be rated lower than that coach I just faced who's only in his second season. I don't know how their PG jumps up and grabs a rebound over my C. I don't know how there's 3 of us and 1 of them and they get it so often. I don't know. I just try to keep telling myself rebounding is overrated.

Reporter: You love 3's, but your team can't make them very well so far. Will you keep it up?

Tovarich: Probably, especially against Texas. I know we'll face a far superior big man who'll stuff all our shots and single-handedly out-rebound us, since we can't outrebound inferior big men. 3's are the only way to win @ Texas. And nothing I've seen of the 3-point shooting makes me optimistic about that.

Tovarich: Well, didn't expect to win that. We shot badly. They shot badly. We forced a lot more turnovers and the refs were generous to us for once. I still don't know what our shooting problem is. We didn't have it last year.

Reporter: I expect you rebounded better than you thought you would?

Tovarich: Yeah, that wasn't so bad.

Reporter: Why stop pressing in the second half when it was so effective in the first?

Tovarich: I felt safe with the lead.

Reporter: You didn't feel you were too conservative in the second half?

Tovarich: I was starting to think that when Halsch singlehandedly got the lead from 14 down to 6. Luckily we got a couple offensive rebounds and ran some more clock and we were able to run it down to where they had to foul us, and we hit all 4 there at the end. But I was trying to keep the starters fresh. 8 points in 7 minutes by the bench was rather unimpressive and I wanted the starters to have some energy left for their inevitable push.

Reporter: Your shooting % has decreased, but so has your opponents. No idea why?

Tovarich: None. We're not doing anything differently. Just no noe can be relied on for a shot now that they're a year older for some reason. It defies logic.

Reporter: Even though Texas is unranked and officially listed on paper as equal to your team, how big of a deal is it to beat a team like that?

Tovarich: Hopefully they have a good Big 12 season and help our SOS out. We've beaten a handful of big programs since I got here. This school's got a great history but we know we've got a shot against most teams.

Tovarich: That was something resembling what should have happened at least. Some people, some people hit some shots finally. We sneaked out 1 extra rebound for once. That's very rare, so I guess I should just be happy about it even though it was a 2-6, grossly outmatched team.

Reporter: Why pull some of the starters so early?

Tovarich: I'd like to leave Tamayo and Rakiecki off on good notes. If they came back in the second half and missed a few, I'd worry about their confidence, so hopefully it was a boost this way.

Reporter: You started slow, down 13-11 after about 5 minutes and then the press for the next 7 minutes totally changed the game.

Tovarich: Yeah, seems like it just takes one quick steal and a layup and everything opens up. I've skipped the press against some of these lesser opponents because we ought to be able to beat them without it, but maybe that little bit of momentum it creates is necessary.

Reporter: Even though you won rebounds as you said, is it disappointing no one had more than 5?

Tovarich: I've accepted that's a reality. Our big guys just seem constantly out of position and it's more of a group effort.

Reporter: The big guys didn't score much. Problem there? Or more worried about hitting more 3's?

Tovarich: The 3's haven't been hitting, so I'd rather work on that.

Tovarich: Good easy win. Nice to have that first big blowout win. I'd like to take some credit for the defense, but I doubt we had a lot to do with it. We did pile up some more blocks than usual, but other than that, they just missed a lot.

Reporter: This time you let Tamayo stay in and miss his last 4 shots, why didn't you take your own advice?

Tovarich: I really should have, but he still had a very good game, and I don't think it made any difference. Just gotta teach him how to make a 2-point shot too.

Reporter: The rebounding regressed again, didn't it?

Tovarich: Their two big guys were dominant on the boards, but we missed 6 more shots than them and they outrebounded us by just 4, so they had more defensive rebound chances, which were easier. It wasn't the worst effort.

Reporter: It looked like you were determined to get Petrauskas going there toward the end.

Tovarich: Yeah, I like when everyone scores. It's a bit of a chore oftentimes with him though. They blocked him on all 4 of his misses. I wish he'd be more assertive with the ball in the paint, but he, like every other big guy I've coached, just don't seem to be.

Reporter: Why do you think you've shot better the last 2 games?

Tovarich: No reason whatsoever. They played a lot of zone and that gave us a lot of wide open 3 attempts, but other teams do that and we miss, so all in all, I have no idea.

Tovarich: OK win. Didn't feel like we out-rebounded them but we did somehow. Shooting was mediocre. Tommy Amaker must have a situatation like I did my first year at Eastern Shore only playing 7 players. Tough to keep them all fresh. Their big guy dominated the boards. The two shooters piled up a lot of points. Overall mediocre performance on our part.

Reporter: You're up to #2 in the mid-major poll. Do you feel you're close to breaking into the top 25?

Tovarich: Maybe? I don't know. Maybe we have some votes? No idea, because no one can see. It'd be nice to get some recognition like that, but this team needs to focus on Troy. We dropped our conference opener in the middle of a 13-1 start last year. Those things are magically harder somehow.

Reporter: Tamayo was 4/6 on 2 point shots, does that please you

Tovarich: No. All of those should have been 3's. I don't know why so many times we shoot with our feet on the line. The guys need to have the awareness to know where their feet are when they catch a pass. I can't go out there myself and place them in the right spots.

Reporter: The in-season recruiting window passed. No news?

Tovarich: Recruiting hasn't gone well so far. We've piled up a bunch of new recruits for one of the assistants to watch tape on and we'll make a run at some more people.

Tovarich: A rare good rebounding showing by us. Marshall and Shehan did a great job breaking the press and being decisive and strong with the basketball on their layups, unlike some other big guys who got stuffed frequently and pushed around as usual.

Reporter: You only shot 17 3's. Are you feeling ok coach?

Tovarich: Yeah, it feels strange, but it happens. They pressed so much, we gotta take advantage of that. They played tight man D the entire game and kept close on the shooters most of the time, so such is life. Luckily some of the big guys stepped up.

Reporter: Troy coach feels the refs were bias and that you didn't need to score the last bucket as the shot clock was turned off.

Tovarich: I'd feel the refs were bias if I were him too. I bet when we go to Troy, they'll get some home cookin too. That's how it usually is and we were at home. As for the layup against the press, he could've stopped. There's 33 seconds left and it's an 18 point game. Give it up. Normally I wouldn't, but I was a little irritated at the pressing still going. They can try to use it as motivation in the return game if they want.

Reporter: They still shot over 50%, you just accumulated more shots than they did with some turnovers and better offensive rebounding. Is the field goal defense still a concern even though it's been better this year?

Tovarich: It always is. It has been better, but I still assume every shot that gets taken is going in and I just try to be pleasantly surprised when we can force some misses.

Tovarich: Wasn't looking good down 57-51 there, great finish, hit some shots. Finally forced some misses. Luckily their C wasn't overly big, so it wasn't so dominant for them down there. They still outrebounded us easily though. Big games for Tamayo and Shehan. The other 3 starters were pretty off.

Reporter: You've likely never in your career had your C take 10 shots. Why so much more than usual?

Tovarich: I was a little worried when I saw their C was a SR. Luckily he isn't so tall, so I thought we might've had an advantage there. I almost gave that up after the second block, although that second was 100% goaltending. Bias refs I guess. Some games the paint is not easy for us to score in, and sometimes that becomes obvious very quickly. We missed our first 4 3's, so I thought I better try everything early and see what was looking promising and what wasn't.

Reporter: Your rotations got quite changed up there in the last 5 minutes of the first half. Did you like the different combinations?

Tovarich: Yeah, Shehan was pretty exhausted and needed an extra couple minutes. Stivers was beat too. I'm not against different combinations, just like to balance the A team and B team if I can. Unless someone misses a FT or gets extra tired like that during a long stretch without a stop, I'll stick with the hockey subs.

Tovarich: Nice to get everyone some minutes. Easy win, like it was supposed to be.

Reporter: Did you just assume the game was over when you went up 17-2?

Tovarich: Yep. Just had to mix a few starters back in for a few minutes here and there to rest the B team plus the other 2 guys.

Reporter: What do you expect from Greensboro in the championship?

Tovarich: They had a gaudy record like we did last year and were just ahead of us in the RPI until they got upset in their conference tournament, so I know they're a good team. I see they beat Clemson, and they have 3 SR's and 2 JR's starting, so that wonderful team unity (rolls eyes). It'll be a challenge. Time to get to work. Merry Christmas Eve everyone.

Tovarich: Backups made that a little more interesting than I'd hoped in the second half, but good win. They had an off shooting night I think. They're likely better than that.

Reporter: Should you be in the top 25 now?

Tovarich: I think so. Barring catastrophe, we'll get there eventually if we're not yet.

Reporter: How about your big guys against the press?

Tovarich: Awesome. They pressed way too long. Not sure why they didn't figure out sooner that was not going to work for them. We did turn it over a few times more than usual, but some of that was half-court and transition. The press only caused 2 of the 7 maybe.

Reporter: They played very fast, it seemed like that was a bit of an issue for you.

Tovarich: They have great speed, so they just kinda out-ran us on both sides sometimes. But that might also be why they didn't shoot so well until the last 4 minutes.

Tovarich: Luckily we shot well, and luckily they didn't have much height so we were able to keep up with all their scoring and good shooting. Lack of height of course didn't stop them from outrebounding us, but not much does.

Reporter: Did you think this game would be harder?

Tovarich: A little. They were 10-4 and it was on the road. They're one of the best teams in the conference. Luckily we had a good shooting night, broke the press well and were able to force some turnovers by their guards.

Reporter: You didn't make the top 25, were you disappointed?

Tovarich: Somewhat, but it'll come. It's another thing to put on my resume which makes me a better coach, but we'll get there, and soon if we keep playing well. If not, this team should be pre-season top 25 next year for sure.

Reporter: Does that mean you'll stay next year even though you can leave?

Tovarich: Way too early for that nonsense.
