Tovarich: Well, we're lucky we pulled that out. They're lucky we didn't shoot 3's better against their zone.

Reporter: Why do you think they didn't score the last 4 minutes of the game?

Tovarich: I don't know why they missed all of a sudden. We hit a couple 3's in a row to tie it with 2 minutes left, and then no one scored again until Stivers hit the 3 with 2.5 to go. Just one of those things I guess. They were making everything it felt like before that.

Reporter: Is 45 a record for 3's attempted?

Tovarich: That's probably a personal record, but I don't recall well enough to know. They played almost exclusively zone though, so if they're going to leave it open, I trust Tamayo always.

Reporter: Then why did Stivers get the last shot?

Tovarich: I just had a feeling. They were both fairly open there, but I trust Stivers to shoot it as well.

Reporter: They didn't take kindly to you saying you'd already made a banner for the Sun Belt championship.

Tovarich: And they blew their chances to get a leg up to start the season.

Tovarich: I've seen a lot of incredible halves of basketball. A 3-6 team shooting 22/29 in a half was by far the most incredible though.

Reporter: Do you feel like you ever had a chance in that one?

Tovarich: Of course not 43-19 rebounds. 13-1 fouls. They shot 75% for an entire half. 14-2 FT's. We shot 8/19 on point blank layups. There was no overcoming any of that.

Reporter: Not even when you started the 2nd half on a 13-0 run?

Tovarich: No, that was never going to last.

      Reporter: Why can't you rebound?

      Tovarich: I will never know.

Reporter: How do you refocus for Kansas State?

Tovarich: We'll practice and we'll do what we do when the game starts. I don't thinkl I'll see another 75% half from anyone.

Holy cow. That 60 point half is wild.

Tovarich: We're just broken at the moment. +18 in turnovers, +22 in shots but we can't hit any of them. Our defense is playing better than to allow 60% shooting again. I still don't know why we can't get a rebound. I can't remember the last time Li hit a shot. We're just broken and I don't know what to do to fix it right now.

Reporter: Why can't any of your guards ever make a layup?

Tovarich: I have no idea. It's a constant thing and it's baffling. Like they cringe every time they go up like someone might touch them and they manage to miss a layup that's barely contested. The other team's great at finishing with 3 people around him. I guess we need to get tougher.

Reporter: This is your first 2-game losing streak here. How do you deal with that when you never have before?

Tovarich: Florida Atlantic is 4-11. Hopefully we can break it against them. I don't know why we're in a holiday funk. We'll get back to practice in a few days and hopefully get some confidence back.

Tovarich: It looked routine in the end, but it didn't start that way. Hopefully we worked our way out of our funk, and hopefully Tamayo isn't starting to get in one.

Reporter: What were you thinking down 12-6 early?

Tovarich: "Here we go again". I think we turned it over twice in a row in transition trying to push things that weren't there. Luckily they did a lot more of that than we did.

Reporter: You didn't shoot a 3 for over 4 minutes in the first half. Were you feeling ok?

Tovarich: When Tamayo is 0-7 and the team is 0-10, even I can take the hint and not be so stubborn. But then after a few minutes of course, I AM that stubborn. So then we made 5 in a row to pull away before halftime, and we kept them comfortably behind in the second half and were able to get everyone off the bench going. Just Galbreath and Tamayo couldn't hit anything, so hopefully that isn't a cold spell coming on for them like Li just went through.

Reporter: You outrebounded someone. Is that encouraging?

Tovarich: I guess so. They took a lot of quick shots in the second half. I'd say they devolved into jacking 3's, but they made almost 50% of them, so that doesn't seem accurate to say. But they were so quick shooting that we were the only ones under the basket to rebound because some of them hadn't made it down the floor yet.

Reporter: Riley had his most productive game in a long time. You usually don't use him in the half court offense. Might you more now?

Tovarich: A lot of that was during our spell of not shooting, or not making any 3's, so he got 2 offensive rebounds I think and was able to go back up and lay them in, and we gave him and Suotamo a lot of chances while we couldn't shoot outside, so hopefully it got their confidence up in case it happens again, but I love my 3 pointers, so it's still plan B.

Tovarich: That one actually was as routine as it looked. It was nice to have a stress-free game from start to finish. Maybe since we're not ranked anymore, we're not the Super Bowl for anyone now, though we hopefully will win enough to be back in soon.

Reporter: You didn't even "occasionally" press today, and still forced 15 turnovers. What do you attribute that to?

Tovarich: We're aggressive either way. Trapping some of the guys when they have the ball in the corner or along the baseline really limits their options. We're so bad at field goal defense that it's the only way we can play really.

Reporter: Tamayo's funk was just one game, but how about Stivers today?

Tovarich: That's ok. I don't expect all 10-12 guys we throw out there to be on, just as long as not ALL of them are off.

Reporter: Do you think it's actually a coincidence you fell out of the top 25 and then had two easy games?

Tovarich: Who knows what factors go into how the other team plays. We were at home, so you'd hope the other team struggles. The refs were generous toward us as you'd expect for a home game. You'd think a team that starts 3 SR's would take care of the ball better, but they weren't great at handling it today.

Reporter: You're starting to recruit a JR for the first time. Why now?

Tovarich: Just seeing if it sets us up better to get him next year. I'm curious.

Tovarich: That was a fun, fast paced game. Hopefully it makes up for some of those games people had to watch at Eastern Shore where we dribbled the cover off the ball and stood around watching the clock tick.

Reporter: How great was Riley breaking the press?

Tovarich: That's what he's best at. He's usually got more speed than the PF trying to keep up with him and he breaks it very nicely. He drew some fouls, he got it to Suotamo sometimes when the guy guarding him came over to try and stop Riley. You'd think they'd learn it wasn't working and stop but then went most of the game with it.

Reporter: Is that why you pressed them back?

                      Tovarich: Yes. Serves them right.

Reporter: What changed when it came to rebounding in the second half?

Tovarich: We had a whopping 5 rebounds at halftime. I know there were not a lot of misses, but good grief, that was embarrassing. Most of our boards probably came those last 3-4 minutes when they just started letting the 3's fly and we were the only ones around the boards, otherwise I assume that guy that didn't even start would have outrebounded our entire team.

Reporter: You're already back in 1st. Were you worried about an early loss?

Tovarich: Not at all. The banner's already made, just waiting for it to be official. I expect to win every conference game still, even though games like Middle Tennessee happen sometimes, but I doubt anyone else is good enough to beat us and then everyone else too.

Tovarich: Odd game. I was hoping for an easy night with the 13-2 start where they couldn't make a shot for a long time. Then they couldn't miss for a long time and lead 34-24. Then we pulled away after halftime easily enough. 3's were just not falling for anyone. The refs helped us some. That doesn't happen that often.

Reporter: Is there any such thing as an easy road game, even against lowly rated opponents?

Tovarich: They're rare. We did have the one @ Eastern Kentucky the first game. We're back ranked too, so that seems to be some big motivation for all the Sun Belt schools.

Reporter: You mixed and matched the A and B teams as you call them a little. Was that intentional?

Tovarich: Mostly no. Suotamo was pretty gassed. Riley missed a few FT's when he'd have been subbed out. I don't entirely know how they got messed up a bit there but no, not intentional except for giving Suotamo an extra minute or rest.

Tovarich: That looked a lot like the Monroe game. 13-4 early lead. Suddenly we're down 16-15. I knew that script, so I put the press on and subbed everyone out and slowed things down a little.

Reporter: Did you think Suotamo was broken when he started 0-8?

                            Tovarich: Tremendous question!

Reporter: Uhh, we just ask the questions you write down for us to ask coach.

Tovarich: Shhh. As I was saying, great question. Yes, all 8 of his shots were layups. Half were blocked, once he got blocked by the backboard. Twice we even got him behind the defense, and he refused to dunk so he just jumped up and all he had to do was let the ball fall off his fingertips and in, and he managed not to. So yes, I took him out for a few extra minutes early in the second. After that, I was just curious to see if he was broken and gave him a few more chances since we were up comfortably for most of the second half.

Reporter: Why do you think neither team could make many 3's again?

Tovarich: Just like the Monroe game, only a little bit better. I don't know. Unfamiliar arena for us maybe. I think their percentage was ok, especially Villanueva early and when it got to the last 3 minutes they were just heaving the first shot that came about and it will really went down.

Reporter: That's also how you closed the rebounding gap?

Tovarich: Yes. That felt a lot more lopsided than 34-30 before the end there.

Tovarich: It's hard to explain how we won that one. They're very obnoxious to play. Their half court trap is very irritating. I mean that as a compliment. 8 turnovers on our end is a lot. We usually take good care of the ball. There were probably 6 times I thought we had no chance. Whether it was when we were down 27-13 or 60-47 midway through the second half. Our press finally got to them a bit when Pleiness came out. I never thought he'd miss. But we were able to speed them up and force some bad passes like they were routinely doing to us.

                              Reporter: After Galbreath fouled out

Tovarich: (interrupting) thanks for reminding me of that. Incredible. We allegedly fouled him on a made 3, a missed 3 and a few other teams going for steals because we went hyper aggressive, because I swore to god if I had to watch him bury another 3, I was going to lose it.

Reporter: (continuing) Capel seemed to run the offense just fine

Tovarich: Yeah, he's ok enough. He took care of the ball and moved it around nicely to some shooters.

Reporter: Despite the good numbers by the big guys, you seemed frustrated at all the point blank misses.

Tovarich: They're ALL frustrating. The stats surprise me very much because I can remember a good 8 or so misses on layups. Some were guards when we were trying to lob it over the halfcourt trap, but jeez, it would be nice to feel like everyone didn't turn to jello when they get in the paint. It's incredible how other teams play such amazing transition defense. We're past them and running in and somehow they spook us into missing a layup or Capel missed a dunk or they come out of nowhere and get a block without hardly ever getting called for a foul. I wish they'd all teach me how to do it, after they teach me how to rebound.

Reporter: How about Stivers FT shooting at the end?

Tovarich: Tremendous. 6/6. That's why I moved him back to his natural PG position, so he'd be handling the ball during the intentional fouling.

Tovarich: The Cajuns ran into a buzzsaw tonight. We didn't do a lot wrong. They couldn't do a lot right. It's surprising to cruise against one of the better teams in the conference, experienced too. They'll be starting 4 seniors and a junior next season. They'll be tough.

Reporter: +11 rebounds is probably one of the best rebounding performances you've ever had against a team that was of a similar caliber.

Tovarich: It was pretty 50-50 throughout the game. They definitely fit the bill for devolving into jacking 3's there in the second half, so it's skewed a bit. But it's nice to have more whatever the reason. I'm probably -1000 in rebounds in my career so I'll take it.

Reporter: Only 8 3's in the second half. Were you feeling ok coach?

Tovarich: Haha, yes. There's no reason to rub it in on the Cajuns. They haven't pulled anything like Denver did my first season here that I will NEVER forget as long as that coach coaches there, or Middle Tennessee this year. Lots of backup minutes, and no unnecessary 3's. I'd have given Lewis one or two if I realized he wasn't in the scoring column like everyone else. I'd have played some of the walkons if I was allowed but they don't let you have more than 12, which is silly. I have 15 on the roster...

Reporter: Cajun coach was not thrilled with the refs and the foul and free throw disparity. What did you think?

Tovarich: I know how he feels. We were in the bonus before they even called one on us in the first half. We're the home team though, and we were more aggressive getting the ball down low and driving it in. Some nights the refs let a lot go down there and we get stuffed 8 times, and sometimes they're a little less forgiving. It happens.

Reporter: Speaking of Denver, do you still plan to run up the score on them Saturday if you get the chance?

Tovarich: Absolutely. I remember teams who could dribble out 5 seconds, and I remember those who throw a half court pass and go all out to beat the buzzer when they're up 16. No matter where I coach, I will torment O'Bannon. I don't usually pay attention to who goes where, but I will find him, even though he'll be lucky to get hired as an assistant, and I will punish whatever coach hires him.
