Re: Coach Tovarich 2.0 CH2K8 Career Legacy

I've seen the OT bug maybe once or twice, but don't know what to do with it.

I get random freezes near the end of every season and my career stats get messed up. It's annoying but the cost of playing 2K.

Tovarich: It would be nice to get a rebound occasionally. It's embrassing. I don't know what to do about it. Watching them get putback after putback after putback was irritating. That game should never have been close, but since they often get 3 shots on a possession, usually until they make it, it's hard to get too far ahead.

Reporter: What things have you changed in an effort to get more rebounds?

Tovarich: Nothing. I think at some point I've tried some things, but for the most part, we're going to get out-rebounded slightly, occasionally by a wide margin. Apparently rebounds are overrated because we're 27-2 and I bet we've only out-rebounded our opponents about 3 times.

Reporter: Do you expect to go undefeated in the Sun Belt now?

Tovarich: We have 3 at home, so we should. New Orleans gave us a tough game the first time, inexplicably so did 8-16 Florida Atlantic. The Cajuns had a rough night, but they'll probably be better.

Reporter: It's close enough to the end of the season to start asking if you'll be back next year.

Tovarich: No idea. That'll be the cliffhanger for you all at the end. You'll have many months to wonder where I'll be next year.

Tovarich: I guess that's the solution to winning the rebound total, just get way ahead and wait for the other team to devolve into a 3-point happy team. If they weren't missing so many 3's though, they'd have outrebounded us. I know they got at least 3 offensive rebounds on the one possession, possibly a 4th, it was hard to keep count. It was nice to eventually blow them out. I think they got within 5 about 4 minutes into the second half before we exploded there. Nice to get the B team some more minutes, get the C team in there. We couldn't do a whole lot wrong shooting-wise today.

Reporter: We're going into the last week of in-season recruiting, how is it going there?

Tovarich: Just down to the last scholarship. I offered a C. He seems to prefer Cincinnati, but they haven't offered, so hopefully well get him. If not, we have a PG we're in the lead on. I'd prefer the C even though he'll 100% redshirt next season, but they're both quality guys.

        Reporter: What are their names?

Tovarich: I don't know anyone's name until I see it on a jersey at practice. They're potential PG and potential C for now. Maybe tape guy knows their name or recruiting helper guy.

        Reporter: You mean the assistants?

        Tovarich: Yes.

Tovarich: Not sure what happened to their shooting in the second half, but that turned out to be an easy one after a close first half. We dominated the boards. I'm just too confused to even process that right now. Great performance from most people. I think a couple were banned from scoring no matter what, but that's ok when you win by 30.

Reporter: With Duke losing, do you expect to be #1 in the poll next week?

Tovarich: I can see someone jumping us, we'll see. We have to take care of Florida Atlantic first. They were 8-16 when we played them the first time and they played a great game. They're in 13th right now, so them continuing their season depends on them beating us in this one, so I assume we'll get another good effort.

Reporter: It's senior day, and you don't normally start the SR's on the bench. Will you do it this year?

Tovarich: Yeah, we'll let Magley and Marshall start and play a few minutes and we'll get back into our regular rotation. If the game were of some significance and we had a really good team in our last game, I wouldn't, but I think we're locked into a 1 seed and we've wrapped up the conference and we should be able to win no matter who I play.

Reporter: But you just said you expect a good effort from them even though they're 10-20?

Tovarich: Yeah, we're supposed to say nice things about the opponents, unless it's Denver.

Tovarich: Obviously that couldn't have gone much better. Started all 3 SR's. Magley and Rakiecki were tremendous. I think they were both career highs in scoring for them. We got Marshall some points at least. I think that one was over at 40-12 in the first half. They had a rough shooting half and then never really had a chance. I know Tamayo and Shehan are probably disappointed but we spread the love on Senior Day. I don't think much could have gone better.

Reporter: You dominated rebounds again, is that encouraging that something has improved?

Tovarich: No, just bad shooting by the other team. I don't think we were the cause of the bad shooting though.

Reporter: Is there anything this team can improve on heading into the Sun Belt tournament?

Tovarich: More consistency is always good. Rebounding the last two games has been a fluke. We won't keep getting some awful shooting nights from teams who are going home if they don't win.

Reporter: What would it mean to the program if they're ranked #1 on Monday?

Tovarich: I'm sure it would go to a lot of people's heads, hopefully not the players'. We're obviously not the best team. I'll just settle for an easier 2nd round than we got last year.

Tovarich: Kind of a sloppy game, little high in the turnovers, not nearly as high as them though, and we only pressed for about 3 minutes right after halftime. We didn't shoot from the line well, but the big guys down low were tremendous, the backups hit some 3's. They shot great from 3 to keep themselves in it for a while. Nice second half though, nice minutes for the B team. I believe I already saw the Cajuns won and we handled them twice easily, so hopefully that goes as easily again.

Reporter: Were you worried about the #1 ranking going to the player's heads?

Tovarich: I never brought it up, but I know I didn't need to, I know they all saw it. Players are like robots though. They don't seem to show a lot of emotion, unless the ball is out of bounds on them. Then they're crushed. They handle losing better than that for some reason.

Reporter: Joe Lunardi has you potentially playing Georgia Tech in the 2nd round, how'd you feel about that?

Tovarich: At least I'd know we could beat them. I just don't want to see another 93 rated kinda team like North Carolina who just underachieved a little because they were young.

Tovarich: Luckily we went on that nice run in the middle. That was a one score game it felt like into the low 30's, then we blew up right before halftime and the first few minutes of the second half. The backups struggled, so they made that look closer than it was there at the end. Rough night for many of them. Troy in the final, just as you'd expect. They feel like the second best team.

Reporter: 17 turnovers forced without pressing, are you pleased with that?

Tovarich: Yeah, we got in the passing lanes, and deflected a lot of passes. They often go right back to the offense, but tonight a lot of those went to us.

Reporter: Shehan has really taken off with the scoring lately, can he keep that up and is that now more of a plan on offense than just shooting 3's all the time?

Tovarich: He's doing what you expect him to do. I don't know why he can't do it more. He's the 2nd highest rated C in the conference and many teams don't even have a true C, so he ought to do a lot down low. I wish he could rebound better. Petrauskas is superior at that for sure, but Shehan can score most of the time. Every other big guy was brutal tonight though.

Reporter: What kind of intensity do you expect tomorrow knowing you're likely a 1 seed no matter what happens?

Tovarich: It's still a trophy to collect. It's still something to win. Lunardi had us as the overall 1 seed before Marquette went and beat 2 losing teams in Cincy and Seton Hall...

Tovarich: Been a while since we played an NBA team. I guess we were due for one. I can only laugh at all the absurdity that I just watched.

Reporter: Is it better to get a bad game like that out of the way before the NCAA tournament?

Tovarich: Yeah, maybe, but there's no reason it can't happen again in a game or two.

Reporter: What do you think you could have done differently?

Tovarich: Nothing. We played good defense. We contested the shots well. It made no difference. We were open for 3's. We missed them all. The rebounds clang to them like they had magnets. We were in position for them. We forced turnovers. They ultimately just shot out of their minds and we were unable to make a shot from anywhere really. This team can overcome a lot of things going against us and has, but there are limits.

Reporter: Do you still expect to get a 1 seed?

                            Tovarich: I have no idea.

                            Reporter: Are there any positives?

Tovarich: Riley broke the press relatively well. Lewis hit both his shots. My assistants stopped me from breaking any clipboards.
