Tovarich: Nice easy win. Lots of minutes for the backups again.

Reporter: You had an unusually high 9 turnovers. Do you care since you won easily still?

Tovarich: We were a bit lazy against the press, made a few too many long passes down the court and they stole a handful of them. It was mostly the B team doing it and Ryan playing some PG like he did last year, so I know Stivers wouldn't do that so many times, so not as much of a concern, but Capel does need to be less complacent with a big lead.

Reporter: Were you worried anyone would be looking ahead to your new rival Denver?

Tovarich: No, that's probably mainy my thing more than theirs.

Reporter: You may be ranked in the top 10 next week. Does this feel like a top 10 team?

Tovarich: Of course not. We still haven't played a ranked team. Mississippi State is unranked at 17-5, not sure why. Texas is a subpar 10-8, UConn is a subpar 12-8. Cal's 10-12. Turned out most of these teams had disappointing seasons. The pollsters are being nice putting us up there near our RPI, which seems inflated somehow, but no, the record is gaudy, but not filled with a lot of quality.

Tovarich: Hopefully Tamayo doesn't get kneecapped, because some fixers are out a lot of money after that one. That would have been a loss in any previous season of my career. This team, Tamayo specificially tonight, overcame all the absurdity.

Reporter: What absurdity are you referring to?

Tovarich: Great question, let's start with missing out first 8 2-point shots, all of which were layups. Some of them were hysterically blocked, the one was a blatant goaltend, the possession where we had 3 consecutive offensive rebounds only to be blocked on ALL 4 shots by the same guy who magically warped around to block everyone's shot, or all the ones where literally all the ball had to do was fall out of our hand into the basket and it mysteriously came out sideway to miss from what amounts to a negative distance. Literally we're above the basket and refuse to dunk of course. There was there 74% shooting in the first half. At one point, rebounds were 15-2. I think in the second half, we missed our first 5 2-pointers, all of which were layups. 3 we somehow couldn't get over the rim. Like, how does a 7-footer, jump up with a ball and he can't get it over the rim? If Shehan were captaining the Titanic in the first half, they'd have missed the iceberg.

        Reporter: How about Tamayo?

Tovarich: Insane. Started 7/8 on 3's. That's the only way we had a lead there in the first half with their absurd shooting.

Reporter: The vast majority of their shots were layups though.

Tovarich: Yes, that magically went through all our defenders like they were ghosts. We didn't make very many layups. And I think it was a 90% success rate of offensive rebounds when they did accidentally miss a layup.

Reporter: Did they just get up for the game because you ran the score up on them last year, or tried to?

Tovarich: Maybe, they're an extremely mediocre .500 team for the second year in a row but frequently play amazing against us. We must be their Super Bowl. Good thing we had the +12 turnovers and +13 shot attempts. I have no idea how we were +13 in shots. They got offensive rebounds the the majority of their misses. Seem like some kind of inescapable fate that they couldn't hit a 3 and we couldn't score in the paint. The statisticians missed some blocks for them for sure. They had 4 in one possession I am sure. 34-19 rebounds is a joke. Almost every player on the team not named Tamayo all simultaneously being inept is too convenient. It's just incredible we won somehow. This team is so good that we can overcome all sorts of mystical powers that the other teams seem to throw at us.

Reporter: Anything else you'd like to rant about, even though you still won?

Tovarich: Sure, I wanna give some props to Shehan, despite the ridiculous rebounding advantage, got the game-deciding offensive rebound with 13 seconds left, that allowed us to run out the clock, and avoid what surely would have been a game-winning shot by them. Tamayo for the clutch 3's late. He started 8/9 in the first half, then went unsurprisingly cold to start the second, then finished with 3/4 after his convenient 5 misses in a row.

        Reporter: Are you done?

Tovarich: No. I also wanna throw in how the other team seems to shoot like 95%, almost all on 3's, when you deflect one of their passes and it goes back to them. It's excessive punishment for playing good defense. And we played good defense. They shot 61% anyway, but we contested all sorts of shots. We had a hand right in their face. It somehow didn't matter. We should have deflected another dozen passes down into the paint. I can't explain how it got through EVERYONE on our team like we were air.

        Reporter: Are you done now?

Tovarich: Suck it Denver. Now I'm done.

Tovarich: The fixers were due to get us once. We escaped all their previous attempts. Tamayo did a good job hitting the pointless 3 at the buzzer to make it a 1 point game, but then again, I think we shot about 100% down 2 scores. It was only when we were down 1 score that we shot 0%, which included something like 20 missed layups.

          Reporter: What about free throws?

Tovarich: Some kind of bizarre hex? I mean, 2-9 for Riley? We were at 74% before thie game and all that hilarity at the free throw line happens? 9-22? Come on. The release points were magically different than every other game we've ever played all of a sudden.

          Reporter: What about the rebounding?

Tovarich: I can only laugh when some little PG jumps in over 3 of my guys and gets a rebound. I can't explain it.

Reporter: Why don't you just accept basketball has some randomness instead of blaming all your losses on it being fixed?

Tovarich: There is some randomness. But is it random to shoot 0% when you have a chance to tie or take the lead? That's not random. Random is some of those going in. EVERYONE misses EVERY time? Not random. 9/22 for a 74% FT shooting team, is not random. Deflecting 50-something passes to get 16 turnovers isn't random. Getting outrebounded 3 on 1 isn't random. I can predict it all. Deflect a pass back to them? You can see the 3 pointer coming every time. It's not random when you can predict it.

Reporter: Does this loss really matter? You pretty much have the regular season wrapped up and you're obviously in the NCAA tournament.

Tovarich: Yeah, it's not a big deal in the end. But it doesn't make it any less frustrating to have to sit through when you know you're going to lose.

          Reporter: When did you know?

Tovarich: When Riley was 2-9 on FT's, all of which were in the first 6 minutes of the game. When we were down 6-0 after we missed 3 layups and were 0-6 on FT's. It was obvious then. In case it wasn't even more obvious, it was them shooting 65% the entire game and we couldn't make most of our layups. It doesn't take long to find patterns and they're unbreakable sometimes.

Tovarich: Good thing we built such a lead in the first half. The second half was a joke. 0-13 on 3's. 5-25 total. Luckily we made some our FT's throughout the half and had a 3-point lead when Stivers conveniently missed the front end of the one and one. Then I guess my fault for not fouling because I should have known they'd score the halfcourt 3 at the buzzer to send it to OT. I also played the backups too much in the second half I guess. I need to be stingier with letting up on opponents. It was a joke to watch all the misses in the 2nd half while they slowly creeped closer and closer, and there was no shot we could take that would go in. It was fun to play another guy who averaged under 7 boards a game get 23 and score 20. It's fun to play against Shaq. He and the PG should've taken every shot. They'd have won by 40. Luckily they started out cold and we built up that 18-4 lead that slowly evaporated.

Reporter: You turned the press on up 29-14, why?

Tovarich: Because it had just been 29-8 and I already saw the comeback slowly happening. I've blown some big leads before, but 21 is a new high. The backups seemed like they could hold such a lead. I'll have to start being a bit more ruthless and leave the starters in longer.

Reporter: You got a steal up 4 with 45 seconds to go and went for the breakaway layup instead of running clock, why?

Tovarich: Because I assumed we could make a breakaway layup, but I guess when the pipsqueak PG runs down the court next to Riley, apparently we can't handle that level of defense so we conveniently missed, like we did 80% of our shots.

Reporter: Why could you suddenly shoot in OT?

Tovarich: Great question. After just finishing a half shooting 20%, it was pretty shocking to actually hit a couple 3's.

Reporter: You know conference road games are supposed to be hard, right?

Tovarich: And 11-11 teams are supposed to play like they're 11-11, and we're supposed to play like we're 23-2.

Tovarich: Nice second half, they came out on fire and were up 7 early in the first half and we battled back to take a lead at halftime somehow. Second half they struggled a lot. +9 in turnovers might be a career best for any team I've coached, not sure. At least the most lopsided rebounding against a decent team. Maybe we dominated one of the cupcakes on the boards, not even sure about that though.

Reporter: Rakiecki couldn't miss, do you feel like you should've taken advantage of that more?

Tovarich: It's hard to project that he'd have kept making them all, but I'll take 14 points from him and be content with that.

Reporter: Usually you create a lot more than 4 turnovers, why do you think you couldn't today?

Tovarich: We only pressed for about 7 minutes in the first half maybe? and never in the second. I didn't even think it was effective. They have a SR PG, so he's seen enough of the press in his life to know to take care of the ball.
We deflected a lot of their passes in the first half, they just kept bouncing back to them. We built that lead in the second half pretty quick so they got desperate and were shooting quickly. I'm not too worried about it.

Reporter: Is there any pressure in the next game knowing one more win clinches the regular season Sun Belt championship?

Tovarich: I think we're counting on that one either way. That banner's probably already been made. So, no.

Tovarich: Another highly improbably victory with what all was going on during the game. I can't say enough about how great these guys are. Tamayo was otherworldly today, and he had to be against Allen Iverson.

Reporter: You sat down and laughed on the first possession of the game, why?

Tovarich: Well, I think it was obvious what was going on immediately. Shehan misses a point-blank layup, gets his own rebound. Then tries to go back up, then gets that blocked, Riley grabs the rebound, we give it right back to Shehan and he gets called for basket interference on his own shot attempt because he won't let go of the ball while he's above the rim with it. I knew immediately what kind of game we were in for.

Reporter: What kind of game were you in for?

Tovarich: One where you could see things happening before they happened.

                      Reporter: Like what?

Tovarich: Like, for the first 7 minutes after halftime, they scored 100% of the time we got back to 2 scores down. They scored 12 consecutive possessions. They missed? It was an offensive rebound EVERY time until they scored. We shot about 100% down 3 scores. Then we shot about 0% down 2 scores. Finally the press worked a little bit and we somehow accidentally broke the spell and caught up.

Reporter: Was the offensive plan to just give the ball to Tamayo on every possession?

Tovarich: Pretty much. The paint was hexed. We shot 5/14 in the pain in the first half. It was a joke, only no one was laughing, not even on the inside-pun intended. So, it was 3 after 3. I think we tried one single shot in the paint in the second half? And Petrauskas got stuffed. They called fouls on 1 so we got 2 FT's, but it was obvious from the first possession that scoring in the paint was verboten. Tamayo hit his first two 3's of the game, so that was the plan the rest of the way.

Reporter: How about your defense on Sain and Gilchrest?

Tovarich: Non-existent. Gilchrest had 13 points in 4 minutes to start the game. Sain had 10. We tightened it up on them a bit after, but they were a great 2-man team. Unstoppable. Luckily Tamayo was too. They should've tried to cover him better, I thank them for inexplicably not. But Rakiecki and Frazier hit a couple too which were badly needed. We only play one game this week thankfully, so Tamayo can ice his shoulder and we can rest. That one was emotionally draining. It's crazy how overboard the adversity can be sometimes in this game and how frequently these 10-loss teams ranked in the 150's can turn into superheroes who can't be stopped, and it's only against us. They can't do this stuff to any other team, it's crazy how many career highs people hit against us.

Reporter: Middle Tennessee coach looked disparaged during the handshake. What did you say?

Tovarich: I told him he got a superhuman performance from 2 guys who scored 43 when they average 23 combined and we had some kinda curse on us in the paint and they were at home and still couldn't score. So yeah, he probably realized that too.

Reporter: Joe Lunardi currently projects you as a 2-seed. Do you agree with that?

Tovarich: Bit too generous, but sounds nice. I'd love a nice easy 1st round game after the first 2 I've experienced in my career.

Reporter: Also coach, congrats on clinching the Sun Belt championship.

Tovarich: Thanks, totally lost thought of that during the adversity-fest. We'll celebrate that one tomorrow. Just celebrating this unexpected win.

                            Tovarich: **** YES ****

                            Reporter: Ugh, coach?

Tovarich: Sorry. That was an extremely gratifying win. All the usual incredibleness from the opposition going on. The refs as well. Winning at the buzzer in a game like that was as pumped as I've been in my career to win a game.

Reporter: Take us through the last possession.

Tovarich: We finally broke through the pattern of not being allowed to take a lead. They predictably went back ahead with 13 seconds to go because they were amazing and couldn't be stopped. It's fun to play teams shooting 67% all the time. We must be the worst field goal defense team in America by a wide margin.

Reporter: Ugh, coach. The last possession?

Tovarich: Yeah, I'll get there. The refs did a great job fouling Shehan out and keeping him in foul trouble throughout the game.

Reporter: The FT's were even coach.

Tovarich: That doesn't mean everything. We, the home team, the top 10 team were called for more fouls than them. Since we're incapable of finishing a shot when we're fouled, we always get 2. They often can power through the lame contact being called and make their basket at least 50% of the time, compared to the 2% of the time we can do it, so it takes longer for them to accumulate FT's when they only get 1 at a time.

Reporter: OK, the last possession coach?

Tovarich: Their offensive rebounding was amazing. It was like they were programmed to be in perfect position every time. I think I could hear Raftery keep saying 'they didn't get the rebound by accident' and he's so right, it's incredible how they know exactly where to be and no one on my roster every seems to. All their putbacks on their misses were incredible.

Reporter: So how about that last possession coach? What was the plan?

Tovarich: The plan was to full court press the hell out of them because I was tired of them making every shot or getting the offensive rebound at least half the time until they scored. They shot only a slightly superhuman 64% in the second half after their 71% in the first. As usual, it shouldn't constantly take 8 extra shots and 8 extra turnovers forced to eek out a home game against a 12-loss team, but that's the only way we're allowed to win apparently. Did I cover everything yet?

Reporter: Everything except the one and only question you've been asked.

Tovarich: Yeah, so Tamayo was covered. Rakiecki was open on the opposite side of the court. We were trying to get it to Riley first, then over to Rakiecki but Stivers tossed it all the way over to Rakiecki first, and he was supposed to shoot but he was already queued up to pass so he passed it back to Riley, who I didn't want shooting a 15-foot jump shot, especially after he was 1-6 on layups in the first half when we kept breaking the press but he mysteriously couldn't score on any of them, so Petrauskas was over by the baseline, so we passed it down to him and he drove the baseline and laid it in as time expired. Wasn't really the plan, but he was incredible today as was Shehan when he was allowed by the refs to stay in the game.

Tovarich: Another amazing 12-loss team. We'll leave it at that.

Reporter: Tamayo had a wide open 3 at the buzzer in regulation, surprised he missed?

                              Tovarich: No.

Reporter: What were you thinking up 11-0 early in the game?

Tovarich: Can't wait to see the comeback. Poof. Timeout. 3 misses in a row for us, 3 makes in a row them and it's 11-6.

Reporter: How'd you feel about the rebounding?

Tovarich: Amazing their C who barely averages 7 a game, got 18 against us.

Reporter: You are indeed the worst FG defense in the country by 4.6%, why do you think that is?

Tovarich: Must be our terrible defense. We get a hand in people's face when they take jumpshots and it makes no difference. It's hard to tell if we affect their shot at all by even being on the court. We may as well let them shoot wide open shots, I think they'd make the same amount.

Reporter: Do you plan on continuing to just go for steals all the time?

Tovarich: Yep. Makes no difference what we do in the half court, the other team's are all amazing at shooting. Takes 13 extra shots and +9 in turnovers to eek out a win in overtime. If we didn't press and weren't aggressive in double teaming and forcing turnovers, we'd be a 15-15 team despite our superior talent to about 27 of our 30 opponents.

Reporter: How about the traveling call on them?

Tovarich: First one I've seen in my career. I almost fainted.

Reporter: Do you assume you'll win the Sun Belt tournament?

Tovarich: I'd almost rather lose one. We've pulled so many games out of our *** at the end despite the incredible performances against us, that it seems like the law of averages say we're due to lose one because it's impossible to continually overcome all the amazing shooting we see. We'll try to win them all, but I don't mind if we lose one and can just go home and re-group.
