Tovarich: Wow. Incredible game. They got up 8 at one point I think but I think in the last 10 minutes, no one ever lead by more than one basket. They went up 1 with 23 seconds to go and I was planning on holding for a shot at the buzzer, probably a 2 and see if we could get another foul called in case we didn't score, but Walcott was over relatively open as they were playing off him, apparently unconcerned about him, so I decided, what the hell, let's give it a try and give ourselves another chance to foul if we have to and he sunk it. Nothing that went on before that should've made me confident he'd make it, but for whatever reason, I felt like he'd make it. That gave them 7 seconds to tie or win it with a 3. They made a nice pass, and I thought they had a wide open 3 if they wanted it and I had the nightmare doomsday scenario all ready for it to go in and he took a couple steps forward and so Lathum came toward him and just tipped it barely enough to keep it from even hitting the rim and Montrimas was there to grab it. Not sure why he passed up the 3, but I'm glad he did and it worked out for us. If he sunk it, I'd probably have gone and stolen the team bus and gone to the nearest bar.

Reporter: Your big guys were a combined 17/26. I know it was mostly on layups but they often don't execute like that. Talk about how crucial they were.

Tovarich: Yeah, that wasn't really the gameplan, but they pressed us up until the last 90 seconds maybe. Lathum's the go-to guy against the press, hopefully to drive it in while the 2 C's are engaged with eachother. Since we got their C 2 fouls in 2 minutes, I thought ok, that's a good place to exploit. Then we got the backup C 2 fouls with lots of time left in the first half and they both went and sat, so it became the new gameplan to get it down to them even in the half court. The 3's weren't really going down with even a slight consistency, so I felt better about the big guys against their bench. Got their C a 3rd foul real quick in the second. He was clumsy and slow and out of position a lot and so he only ended up playing 8 minutes, so with a PF in the game for most of it, I thought we had the clear advantage and we used it. They were foul-happy. Glad the refs were rewarding our aggression. Despite the large gap in FT's, fouls were only 12-9 for the game, so the refs were even.

Reporter: You had Krleski on his way to the scorer's table and then when Walcott hit a 3, you sent him back. Were you planning on making that change like in the quarterfinal?

Tovarich: Absolutely. He had an open 3 and if he missed it, that was it for him because he was 2-9 and I don't have time for that right now. I'll let it go in the regular season, because frankly, it's not a big deal. The season's about these 3 games. He nailed it and so I left him in. Didn't end up taking another shot until the end, but that's what kept him on the court.

Reporter: Joe Lunardi has you as a 14 seed. Do you think that would be fair?

Tovarich: Sure, I guess. I don't know. I know our RPI is just inside the top 150. Let's face it, our schedule was full of cupcakes, so even with 24 wins, I know it's going to be an elite team in the 1st round.

Tovarich: We couldn't shoot. We couldn't rebound. We couldn't defend. Other than that, everything went great.

Reporter: You slowed it down in the first half and stayed within 2 at the break. What changed?

Tovarich: Once you're down 9, you gotta stop that. Although maybe it would've been less embarrassing if we hadn't. We might've lost like 42-24 or something. Once we got running though, it was just highlight reels for them. In addition to lead passes, I guess alley-hoop lob passes are also indefensible. It was dunk city on us all the second half.

Reporter: Was their superior size the main difference?

Tovarich: There was no main difference. They shot 60% to our 28%. It would've been hard to keep up with them if we shot anything resembling average. But to have a bad shooting night on top of the ridiculous edge they have in the paint was a double whammy. 41-12 rebounds is embarrassing no matter the opponent. There were precious few possessions they didn't score. They routinely got all their misses back. They're tough and physical and we don't have the ability to match that.

Reporter: You're eligible to take another job. Do you think you will?

Tovarich: We'll see what's out there. Schools with hyphens in them are obviously not destination schools. The conference as a whole only has a few tournament wins in its history. Maybe pulling a big upset in the first round under some flukish shooting circustances is basically the ceiling, not just for the school but for whoever wins the MEAC tournament. There's little hope of excelling here and it's most likely that we've accomplished almost what is possible here. I'll see who calls. If no one worth answering calls, I'll keep building and we'll aim for that tournament win.

Re: Coach Tovarich 2.0 CH2K8 Career Legacy

AD: We wish Coach Horn well in his future at St. John's and thank him for all he did for this program. It was a national search for his replacement and we're thrilled that Coach Tovarich has accepted our offer to become our next head coach of Western Kentucky University. He did a fine job turning around the worst team in America and we look forward to him elevating an already established program to the next level.

Tovarich: Thanks whatever your name is. Get ready to give that speech again in a few years. But for now, this is a great program with lots of opportunity. It already has a fine roster and some good incoming recruits and it'll be nice to have something resembling talent.

Reporter: Why did you choose to leave Maryland-Eastern Shore while you were in the middle of building them up?

Tovarich: For the reasons I mentioned in my post-game after the NCAA tournament. That's about what the peak is for that program. Maybe the 2nd round is the ceiling. It would take some extraordinary circumstances to do anything more than that. Losing in the 1st round or 2nd makes little difference to me. I've got bigger aspirations, and those can't likely be accomplished there and if it can, it'll be a long way down the road. Western Kentucky is a significant improvement and it was the only opening that I was interested in.

Reporter: It was believed that Western Michigan offered you first.

Tovarich: Yes, that was my first offer.

Reporter: What made you reject them? They made the Elite 8.

Tovarich: That was obviously somewhat flukish. Their roster is no better than here. Also, the MAC feels kind of boring.

Reporter: What are your expectations for the team next year?

Tovarich: I've barely looked through the roster. 3 of the 4 recruits were already signed. We moved quickly to use up that last scholarship. The last coach, whoever he was, did a great job signing good players and building up some interest from some other good players. I'm not sure I'll even know what to do if recruits are already interested. Not something I've experienced yet, along with having actual talent.

Reporter: There were dozens and dozens of other openings, but you had no interest in any of them?

Tovarich: None. If all the same jobs were available except this one, I'd have stayed at Eastern Shore. Just no interesting schools were open really.

Reporter: Tell us about all the incoming recruits.

                          Tovarich: The previous coach signed:
Vidal Ireland-a JUCO SO PG, 3* from Cincinnati
Andrew Stivers-#10 PG, #24 OVR, 4* from Missouri
Stevie Tamayo-#26 SF, #127 OVR, 3* from Nashville

That left me with one open scholarship. They'd offered a third 2* PG, who would have served no purpose here. I pulled that and went for a 3* PF who signed immediately. Gerry Riley #30 PF, #180 OVR, also from Nashville. The only PG on the roster I believe is graduating if I've looked over the roster correctly, so PG was the big need and that was covered perfectly. It came in as the 13th ranked recruiting class, though I wouldn't take any credit for it.

Reporter: What do you think of the recruiting class that Eastern Shore ended up getting and the coach they hired?

Tovarich: I saw the class came in 45th. I'm not sure who all they ended up signing. I see they hired a guy from Troy who just got fired after 27 years on the job, so that's rough for him.

Tovarich: Apparently when you get to a bigger school, there's more of you press folks and I have to stand up here more and answer questions. Hooray. So....questions.

Reporter: We assumed you'd bring up your assistants at some point in your introductory press conference. We've never had to ask about them, so we forgot.

Tovarich: That's cute you care about them.

                            Reporter: Assistants are people too.

Tovarich: Yeah, and I think I hired some people as assistants too. I thought maybe they'd be a significant improvement from Eastern Shore to here in the assistant pool. Nooooooooooooooope.

Reporter: So who are your assistants?

Tovarich: You can assume I'd have told you their names if I knew. One guy is scouting guy. After the first week of recruiting where I assign him a boatload of tapes to watch, he serves little purpose. I might send him on some scouting trips if I have the resources. The other one is recruiting helper, who will call some recruits here and there when I've taken up too much of my own time on it already and then he's also in charge of sending e-mails. He sends so many e-mails every week that I don't even know where he goes and don't see him. They'll be replaced next year, so don't get too attached to them.

Reporter: Your depth chart lists 4 FR as starters. Is that wise?

Tovarich: Team unity is probably not something I'm ever going to have. Those are the best players, so they'll play. The other starter is only a SO as well, so we'll have the worst team unity since the Citadel 2 years ago. And that'll aggravate me at some point.

Reporter: You're going to start a walk-on at center?

Tovarich: Yes. I don't know how that guy stumbled on to our roster, but he's the best center on the team by far. I think we might have won some kind of lottery there. I know he's not the tallest, but that's likely not a huge problem in this conference.

Reporter: At Eastern Shore you said you only wanted 10 players. You have 14 here. What's the plan there?

Tovarich: I'm on the fence about cutting a few people. We only have 2 PG's on the roster, but that JUCO guy they signed turned out not to be any good, so I'm think of cutting him. He's on the roster for now, but I've got a week to decide on that. Got these 2 older C's who are not as good as the walk-on. I'll RS one for sure. I may cut the other. I may go with a SG at the point on the B team and maybe 2 SF's on the B team as well, so this 3rd SG may go the RS route as well, or he may get cut. I'm a little indecisive about the bottom part of this roster right now, but yes, 10 people active is what I prefer.

Reporter: Is it a bit optimistic to have 3 Power schools on the road while starting 4 FR?

Tovarich: Probably. But we'll see what they can do. You media folks tell me I've got the best team in the Sun Belt, so I've got high expectations for this year

Reporter: So you expect to be in the NCAA tournament?

Tovarich: Yes. And with a crazy young team, I expect to be ranked next season.

Tovarich: We haven't even played a game yet, so I don't know why someone's making me stand up here at a podium to talk again.

Reporter: Uhhhh, you had the pre-season scrimmage. We have questions.

                                Tovarich: (glares)

Reporter: So what did you learn about your team in the scrimmage?

Tovarich: Woah, hold on. Really caught me off guard with that one. Ummm, not much. I'll do the learning when we play some other people.

Reporter: You mean the early games are an experiment?

Tovarich: Yes. An at-large bid from the Sun Belt is probably possible, but not common. The Sun Belt tournament is what matters. I'm not overly concerned about the results right now.

Reporter: Why do you think the regular season games don't matter?

                                Tovarich: Because they don't.

Reporters: (eyebrow raises and muttering to each other in judgement)

                                Tovarich: What else ya got?

                                Reporter: The previous coaches

                                Tovarich: (interrupting) Don't care.

Reporter (continuing) recruiting mostly in Tennessee and Kentucky and nearby states. All of your recruits are far away. Why are you changing that?

Tovarich: I'm going where the interested recruits are who are of high quality. I got quite a bit of resources for just 2 scholarships available. I got some really good recruits interested and they happened to live elsewhere. Deal with it.

Reporter: Do you plan to continue shooting an excessive amount of 3's like you did at Eastern Shore?

Tovarich: You seem to have a lot of opinions about how I should be doing things around here.

Reporter: It's our job to ask questions.

Tovarich: Yes, but yours seem to have a lot of judgement attached to them when you don't like that I'm breaking with what you perceive to be the norms around here.

Reporter: I'm just going to have to get over that aren't I?

Tovarich: Yes. Things are going to be different. Apparently that includes the number of times I have to stand up here.
