Tovarich: I apologize to all the bettors who had the over on the score tonight. That was hideous. I've never seen a team go 9:14 without a point like they did. I wish I knew what we did different, but it's the same defense I've coached for 380 or however many games.

Reporter: What was the strategy in the second half?

Tovarich: Once they made their first shot after halftime, I felt good. That's a good indicator when we're down at halftime. Then they went and made 3 of their first 4 and I wasn't feeling great anymore. We put the press on, then 9:14 of no scoring, 0/12 by them. Just crazy how bad their shooting got all of a sudden.

Reporter: Why at 8 minutes did you take the press off when it had been effective for 4 minutes prior?

Tovarich: Until they improved the shooting, there was no reason to speed the game up in any way. So we ran clock, stopped pressing, etc. They kept missing, so they couldn't set up their press. We were only 9/23 in the second half, so we didn't exactly light it up either during that stretch, but we were close enough that 9:14 of no scoring is more than enough to work with. Then I was glad I wasted time, because they suddenly made 3 in a row, but they never made one again.

Reporter: Is it South Carolina? They've been 2 of your 3 lowest scoring games of the season.

Tovarich: No idea if that's a coincidence or not. This seemed like one of those games where the college basketball gods decided assists were bad. 7 in an entire game? And only 11 for them. Everything had to be done individually it seemed. It went for both teams, so we were even. I don't know why it was them both times. Just glad to get payback for the first one and ruin their senior night.

Tovarich: It was nice of them to ONLY shoot 50% on 3's in the second half after their 7/8 1st half. That should have been their plan on every possession. They'd probably have scored like it was an NBA all-star game. Crazy we managed to lead with all that.

Reporter: Is their lack of depth why they always seem to fade down the stretch?

Tovarich: That's been my experience in the 3 games with them this year. Playing 8 people is tough and one only played 2 minutes. That's my 7-man Eastern Shore rotation my first season and it's not a set up for success.

Reporter: Is it a big deal to win your first SEC tournament game?

Tovarich: No. There's nothing I care about less.

Reporter: Would it be important to be the overall #1 seed?

Tovarich: Georgia Tech managed to lose a 3rd game @ Clemson to end the season and still stayed #1 ahead of us, even after we beat them on their home court and have 2 fewer losses. I think I'd be happy staying under the radar a little rather than being #1. I know the ACC is crazy good, and the SEC is very average, though the Big 10 makes us look good since they appear to be a one bid league. Head to head and 2 fewer losses apparently isn't good enough. I'm fine with a 1 seed anywhere. They can have #1 overall if they win the ACC tournament.

Reporter: A re-match with Alabama after just playing them recently. What do you expect?

Tovarich: We should have lost that one. They ought to be dejected from losing that and just fold.

Tovarich: Rough to overcome all the insane shooting, all the bounces in their favor, the lopsided rebounding and tie it up with 24 seconds to go, only for them to hit the jumper at the buzzer to win it. It was clear as day it was coming. They barely missed anything all game, 67%, so you know if the shot gets off, it's almost certainly going in.

Reporter: What was the strategy at the end?

Tovarich: We had 3 fouls to give, so since they ran most of the clock down for us, I thought we'd try to foul them and see if we could at least force a desperation shot with a few tenths or something, maybe if we rushed them it could have accomplished something. But their guy got too open on the baseline to get to in time after we tried to foul the guy who caught the inbound pass.

Reporter: You were down 19 with about 7 minutes to go and it was very similar to the game a couple weeks ago. Did that give you confidence you could come back again?

Tovarich: We know we're capable. We finally got an occasional miss. We finally hit some 3's. We started 0/10 and then suddenly made 6/7 but they shot 71% in the first half and they really didn't cool off all that much in the 2nd. When they started 5/5 after halftime, I figured it was all too much. Not to mention we'd deflect pass after pass after pass and it would bounce back to them somehow, often giving them a wide open shot as punishment for our good defense. Then even if they did miss, we couldn't get a rebound anyway and they'd just go right back up for a putback. We didn't have many chances to take the lead but we shot 0% when we did, and it took a bunch of chances to tie to finally get one in but by then the clock was in their favor to hold for the last shot. Eh well, whatever.

Reporter: Does this hurt or help going into the tournament?

Tovarich: Hopefully it's not the start of a slump. We may end up getting a team in the 2nd round though who is better than us on paper. We'd be the 9th best team in the ACC. It's entirely possible an 8 or 9 seed has better players than we do. We've ridiculously overachieved but the tournament's all about matchups. We'll hope for the best matchup tomorrow.

Georgia and Georgia Tech at the top of the NCAA Polls is cool. Would be fun to have that be a tournament matchup.

Tovarich: Lazy first half. 28-0 run to start the 2nd ended that one pretty quickly. Biggest run of my career for sure. Felt a bit bad for them. They had a losing record, so obviously took an unlikely run to get here. They fired off 3's the entire game since they had nothing to lose. They shot them well enough early and then I'm not sure they made a single one in the second half.

Reporter: Is it a big deal to have 3 double-doubles in a game?

Tovarich: It's a weird statistical quirk. It means we rebounded well. You'd really hope we would against that team anyway but especially with all the misses from 3.

Reporter: What do you expect from Arizona in the 2nd round?

Tovarich: Just the team I hate to see. They're better on paper and more talented than we are and yet, managed to underachieve their way into an 8 seed while we grossly overachieved our way into a 1 seed. I had a lot of bad experiences with this scenario at Western Kentucky when we stumbled our way into a 1 seed by playing a weak Sun Belt schedule and it took a few years to really break into the latter half of the tournament. We're the underdog for sure.

Reporter: Can you carry over anything from today's dominant effort or might that lull them into overconfidence?

Tovarich: I'll make sure they find something to improve. Arizona's another team who doesn't believe in a C. So hopefully we'll be able to take advantage of that. But obviously they've loaded with elite guards who can shoot their way through us and we're great at letting teams do that.

Man, you’re just cursed in the SEC Tournament, aren’t you? Although given coach’s disparaging comments about the importance of the tournament, maybe he’s just throwing games to give the guys more rest before the NCAA Tournament.

I underachieved a bit in the Sun Belt tournament too. Those teams who need it definitely care about it more than I do haha

Tovarich: I think we were safe after the first half anyway, but nice to start out strong with a 27-6 run to put it out of doubt.

Reporter: Why did you leave the starters in so long in the second half?

Tovarich: There weren't many stoppages. The B team probably stood under the scoring table for several minutes. I would ordinarily have called a timeout to get them in but I was too busy admiring Arizona's just inside half court alley-oops. Then that third one behind the back from behind the 3-point line was mesmerizing. So, I totally forgot to get the starters out even though we were up 25 while these plays were going on.

Reporter: And the full court pass to Hart for a layup with 1 second left?

Tovarich: He was the only player who hadn't scored. It was important to get him in the scoring column.

Reporter: Is it too easy to play these teams with no center?

Tovarich: Yeah, a true FR PF playing the 5 is pretty easy. I got the 2nd and 3rd rated C in last year's class and they're already both doing great. If the other team doesn't have someone big down there, we'll take advantage.

Reporter: Pitt has an elite SR C. How will you be able to handle him?

Tovarich: They also have a 7' PF. So the advantage we have over a lot of our opposition may be nullified. We'll try to get them in foul trouble. Jamie Dixon knows the importance of the big men. They're a bit light on guards though, so we may have to really get out and run in this one since we'll have the advantage at the guard spots.
