    Tovarich: Good win. Questions?

Reporter: Do you really feel the need to slow the game down so much when ahead?

Tovarich: I wasn't going to, but they started 1/8 and we had 4 offensive rebounds I think, so we got 7 minutes in and they only had 3 points. I thought it might be fun to see if we could keep them to single digits in the 2nd half. They made it with about 2:47 to go and then we played normally again. Challenges like that keep me going.

Reporter: You looked confused why your crowd was chanting 'overrated'

Tovarich: Yeah, can you be overrated if you're not ranked? I don't really get it. I know it's just a cliche thing college kids like to chant at games and storm the court whenever humanly possible but it seemed dumb. They should just eat their chalupas they got for us scoring 70 and be happy.

Reporter: How happy were you with the rebounding effort?

Tovarich: One of our best performances since I've been here. We were 11-11 on the boards at the break. Moody, I'm not sure if he's ever been in double digits off the top of my head, he'd have gotten there if we didn't slow the game down so much and I let the bench play so much of the second half, but it was unexpected for sure. They're playing a 6'6" PF at the 5 spot, so you have to consider that, but shorter people have dominated us before.

Tovarich: Who needs rebounds huh? Their C singlehandedly out-rebounded our entire team, which has to be a new low. We kept them a touch under 60%. We're lucky to have shot 9/14 on 3's in the first half. It was easy to predict that wouldn't last, and it didn't. 1/6 was too many. Should've stopped at 1. Felt like they hardly ever missed and they just got it back most of the time. We're lucky they were sloppy with the ball and lack depth. It makes little sense to play 8 people and full court press for almost an entire half. I was happy to return the favor and destroy them. They figured out to stop playing zone after we hit 9 3's before half, then the press was out of desperation, but it's a combination of 2 bad strategies on top of each other.

Reporter: Why didn't you slow the game down when you did on Wednesday?

Tovarich: If I thought any significant run was coming, I would have. I almost thought it might the way they stuffed Moody on 2 of his first 3 shots all of a sudden. But they never got close, then they pressed and we destroyed that. Didn't matter if it was Kovacevic, Fontenet, dumping it off to Moody and Deren. That was bad strategy. Everyone else should watch some tape and see that other than having a great shooting night, every strategy they employed was terrible.

Reporter: Is it a long term strategy to just accept -17 in rebounds and 60% field goal defense as long as you can force 20 turnovers?

Tovarich: It shouldn't, but it's worked my entire career. 20 turnovers is never guaranteed. The -17 in rebounds was fluky even for us and our terrible standards. I don't know what the problem is. 3 of us jump up and one of theirs grabs it in between all of us. Like there are magnets in the ball they used or something. It defied physics numerous times.

Tovarich: Boring 2nd half to watch, I know. We executed well though. We got a couple nice offensive rebounds, got a couple steals on their long transition passes. We made 2 baskets with the shot clock under 3, and got fouled on another. Looks like we avoided any serious injury to our PG. Looks like he'll be feeling the sprained knee for about 11 days, but nothing he can't play through.

          Reporter: Should he play though?

Tovarich: Probably. He was a little sloppy with the ball today. Maybe that was the injury. If it's hindering him, we'll go with a 9-man rotation, but I assume he'll play normally. Maybe fewer minutes like today.

Reporter: Should College Gameday come to the Kentucky game next week?

Tovarich: We're 3 and 4 for now, so yes unless 1 is playing 2, which since they're both ACC teams, is entirely possible. We have to focus on a road trip to Arkansas first. I doubt we'll have as easy a time as we did with them last week.

Tovarich: Easier than expected. The momentum changes in the first half were pretty extreme. We'd each take turns going up 2 or 3 baskets only for the other to come back and do the same. We survived the refs 9-2 foul disparity in the first half. Then it was 6-2 in our favor in the second.

            Reporter: Why did Parsons start?

Tovarich: (shakes head) those dumb assistants...slight injury and they go re-arranging depth charts and lineups and blah blah blah and they can't remember to go put it back correctly. I fixed it as soon as I saw.

Reporter: How big is the Kentucky game? It might be the biggest home game in Georgia basketball history.

Tovarich: It probably was until they went and lost twice. I hope they don't go finding themselves against us. It's very strange we're not going to their place for the second year in a row, same for Florida. The rotation barely changed at all, but only one Georgia-Florida? Twice in a row? I'm sure it's not as big as the cocktail party, but that seems obvious.

Tovarich: Nice even game. Big 3 by Sanderson with 45 seconds to go to put us up 5. Then we hit 6/7 FT's to seal it, which we needed because they hit a couple 3's late there. I see their 7' C is out, so maybe that's why they're on a 3-game losing streak. That likely would've made the difference. I don't think Moody would have dominated like he did. A 6'8" PF is a world of difference.

Reporter: Is Moody the main plan on offense now?

Tovarich: When we feel we have an advantage there, yes. I know earlier in my career I was happy to shoot 25 3's a game, but a good big man down low is the highest percentage shot. I would love for him to rebound, but Kovacevic is doing a great job on that most games picking up the slack. That's something Moody will have to improve on as he gets older, though it seems like it's hard to get many games where someone goes for 25 and 15 or so. Seems one stat suffers as the other piles up.

Reporter: Usually you trust the bench to play faster and not just stand around wasting time, but that seemed to be the plan today with just 7 shots in about 7 minutes for them?

Tovarich: Well, Deren is largely to thank for that. He drew 3 fouls in one possession at one point, somehow none of which were shooting fouls :rolls eyes: so we kept getting a new clock. Someone really ought to change the rules where after an offensive rebound or something the clock maybe just goes to 20 or you can stand around for a while. The bench struggled today, so that was part of it too. It's not like last year where I don't trust them to do anything, but 2/7 didn't inspire me to let them run around much. Partly that was the game situation and the opponent. I still trust them generally to play some actual basketball.

Tovarich: I've probably watched high schools games that were higher quality than that. If you liked watching missed shots, this was your favorite game ever. All around ugly, but we managed to be marginally less ugly than them. This would have been a bad one to lose. We have the 10th and 11th place teams this week before we finish with four tough ones, so this was a good one to gut our way through.

Reporter: So did Moody get benched?

Tovarich: Sort of, yes. 4/10 in the first half was bad enough, but after a 1/5 start after halftime, I accepted he's going to have a bad game and there's nothing that can be done about it. And I hate to say it, but sitting him probably won the game. As soon as we sat him, we went on a 10-2 run in barely a minute and we lead the rest of the way. At that time, it was the best thing to do. Then he came back and finished 1/3, so just wasn't his night, or much of anyone's offensively.

Reporter: How big was Fontenet off the bench?

Tovarich: With Kovacevic at C, I brought him in to replace Moody, and he gave us a nice burst. It only lasted a few minutes and he started missing, but we got what we needed from him.

Reporter: How about the free throw shooting?

Tovarich: Yeah, that seemed destined to be bad from the start. 2/6 in the last 20 seconds didn't help. I'd blame Horton for all the misses, but it's really not his fault. That line was a curse well before we sat through the 7 intentional fouls because they hadn't committed one single foul the entire half until there were 37 seconds left :rolls eyes:

Reporter: Any changes to the lineup beyond this game?

Tovarich: Nope, status quo for Mississippi. It was just a night of bad shooting and bad offense for everyone, except Kovacevic really.

Reporter: Why is Georgia Tech #1 when you beat them and they have one more loss?

Tovarich: Yeah, and it's to Marist...I have no idea. Only the pollsters know. The coaches agree but I think I just piss off all the coaches by telling them how bad their strategies and roster management skills are.

Tovarich: It's cliche, but there's no more accurate phrase to describe that game than the old "tale of two halves". I feel like I'm usually on the other end of it, but we looked dead and buried early on. I think we were down 34-16, they'd made 15 of their first 20 shots. We'd already turned it over 6 times. We were barely shooting 50%, which were all layups because their full court press that never stopped the entire game was forcing turnovers and Kovacevic had a rocky start breaking it. Nothing seemed to be a foul on them. They were called I think for 3 fouls in the first half, then 11 in the second. I think we had 5 on us in the first half, then 1 after the half. We were -1 in rebounds at the break, +6 in the second half. They shot 62% then were a pedestrian 40 or so after the break.

Reporter: Did you consider benching your FR PG with 8 turnovers?

Tovarich: No, he's been due for a game where he looks like a freshman, but 8 turnovers is crazy. 14 for the game as a team? I'm not sure I've experienced that once in my career. It was bizarre. We pressed back eventually and got some turnovers too but there was some weird, inexplicable stuff going on all around that magically reversed itself after halftime.

Reporter: Did you give a good speech at halftime?

Tovarich: I can't explain why things magically turn around, but they almost always seem to. Whatever happened in the first half often completely 100% reverses itself after. Steals stopped, the refs went totally bias the opposite direction, the rebounding changed, they couldn't shoot all of a sudden. All of it totally opposite. Can't explain it.

Tovarich: Usual apologies to those who fell asleep watching us dribble the cover off the ball in the second half.

Reporter: If you don't win the NCAA championship, is this a disappointing season?

Tovarich: No, but it might be one if we don't win it next year. All 10 guys are back, hopefully two more good recruits coming in. This team's overachieved beyond anything I could have predicted. The right people have the big games when the FR are struggling. We've lucked out a few times at the end. We've been just barely good enough to get by almost everyone. But there are plenty of teams better than us on paper for sure.

Reporter: Even though you were the #1 seed in the SEC tournament last year, you didn't win a game in Tampa. Is that a goal this season to go deeper?

Tovarich: Nope, I don't care what we do there. Those things are for seeding, which I am confident we'll be a 1 seed unless we lose like 4 in a row here, or for teams who need it to get into the tournament.

Reporter: Why do you think the SEC doesn't send you to Kentucky or Florida?

Tovarich: No idea who writes the schedule, but it definitely should have a more definitive rotation than whatever is going on right now.

Tovarich: LOL. They had no business losing that game. They were over 70% for most of it. They beat us on the boards. We were a little ahead in the turnover battle, but +6 is not even as good as we usually are there. We didn't shoot FT's very well. It was hard to explain how we were even in the game at all, let alone ended up pulling it out. They started 14/17 after halftime. We caught fire at the end of the half finally and hit all those 3's, 10/18 in the second half. I thought we had no chance because even if after the incredible run it took to get it down to 1, we had 4 chances to take the lead and missed 3, then Kovacevic is going up for a dunk and someone slaps it out of his hand on the way up. 5th try was the charm, Sanderson hit the 3. We got a few steals. Then of course my favorite irony, they only had committed 1 foul all half so we were able to wittle the clock down to .4 before we went to the line so they didn't have time to do anything.

Reporter: Where was Moody at the end of the game?

Tovarich: I can't really explain why, because Fontenet didn't really accumulate any statistics that point to it, but when Moody was a little low on energy and it was time for the starters to go back in, I moved Kovacevic to C and left Fontenet in at PF, and we took off. He got a couple rebounds and a couple assists, and I'm not even sure when those came, but things were going so well with those guys on the floor, I just sort of forgot about Moody and left the team who was out there because there seemed like no reason to mess with it.

Reporter: What is it about this team that is able to pull so many games out at the end?

Tovarich: I still keep expecting that to end. One of those South Carolina games seems doomed to happen again somewhere, and it should have happened again somewhere and just hasn't. Someone on the team always seems to do just enough. 10/18 3's in a half is not normal and we needed every one of them. It helps that they finally cooled off after starting 14/17, they finished a very human 3/7 to let us back in it. It didn't matter what we did to anyone on their team, we couldn't force misses and they were better at rebounding and got several back.

Reporter: Did the steal and shot by Sanderson right at the halftime buzzer give you the momentum you needed?

Tovarich: It turned out to be a significant 2 points, but no. The first shot of the second half often tells me what I need to know about how the half will play out. When teams go berserk like that on us in the first half and they come out and make their first shot, they'll almost always cool down. Alabama came out and missed a layup and I knew we were in trouble. Then they went and made 14/16, so the 2 points mattered because that was the final margin, but no, momentum does not carry over through the magic of halftime.

Reporter: You've clinched the SEC regular season championship. Do you have those on autoship from Amazon like at Western Kentucky?

Tovarich: I wouldn't go that far yet, but I think with all 10 guys back, we can safely order next year's early.

                          Reporter: How is Hart?

Tovarich: He was able to come back in and play on the ankle sprain. He'll be sore through the end of the regular season but he'll be able to go for his customary 6-7 minutes.

Tovarich: Good win for Senior Day. Is is still Senior Day if you have no Seniors?

                                Reporter: So, Parsons?

Tovarich: Yeah, I should have remember from last time. Those dumb assistants go changing everything over an injury that doesn't even affect anything. I should have remember to fix their screwup before the game. We fixed it quicker than we did last time.

Reporter: What did you think of Vanderbilt's strategy?

Tovarich: It's not the worst thing I've ever seen. They pressed, after not starting out that way. Then they tried some zone. They shot a lot of 3's. They mixed it up. That's better than stubbornly clinging to things that didn't work.

Reporter: Would you rather continue to be #2 in the polls or do you think you are being slighted for not being #1?

Tovarich: #1 always felt like a curse at Western Kentucky. You don't have that problem in a major conference. Kentucky may be the Super Bowl for a lot of the teams, but we don't have their kind of brand name recognition or tradition even if we're good right now. On paper, they're allegedly better, but they're having a rough season for what they should be doing.
