Tovarich: I've never seen such crazy sequences of predictable and repeated patters, ever. Just insane.

Reporter: What do you mean coach?

Tovarich: Gosh, where to start. 8 blocks only? They actually had 16 probably. FIVE 3-pointers blocked? We tried twice to block there and it ended up with them shooting 6 FT's. We never once in the game had as many made FG's as them. We ended up with 29 to their 30 and we took TWENTY FOUR extra shots. But never once did we have even the same number made as them. I've never seen someone get FOUR fouls in 1 minute, 3 of which were on the same possession because they twice consecutively got the FT back after missing the and-1. Three time we got the margin down to 3 and they shot 100% immediately following AND got fouled all three times too. I know it's a bit skewed by their center going 11-11 even though our bigs missed TWENTY ONE times in the paint, but to shoot 65% for a game while we shoot barely 40 is wild. +24 shots and +17 turnovers doesn't make up for -15 rebounds. That felt unwinnable in a way.

Reporter: What can you do against a team playing such good interior defense?

Tovarich: Don't undersell it. It was past good. It was amazing, the best I think I've ever seen. If blocks were recorded properly, Loren Woods' record would have been in jeopardy. And blocks on 3-pointers in a game if someone kept that stat somewhere too. I'm sure they're better than us and older than us and more talent and bigger and stronger and faster, but we've played good teams and never felt so helpless, yet simultaneously in the game because we forced so many turnovers. 24 extra shots should be a win 100% of the time.

Tovarich: Good thing they couldn't shoot either.

Reporter: Did you know that was a school record for rebounds?

Tovarich: I hope so with all the shots they missed. 37 for the team is not surprising. A little sadder is Grady sets the individual record at 12. This was our 121st game in Division 1 and we finally for the first time got someone with a dozen rebounds. Luckily we were on a neutral court so the announcer wouldn't say anything about it. I'd have been embarrassed to hear that if we were at home.

Reporter: Have you ever missed 5 shots on one possession?

Tovarich: Four of which were blocked. They didn't get credit for all 4, but they should have. I think we weren't allowed to score on that possession?

Reporter: Did you shoot too many 3's?

Tovarich: Crandle did for sure. They were intent on leaving us open for 3's. We eventually resisted the urge and went down low. Luckily we ran away with it there late. We had a regular 4-point lead there for much of the second half and the first EIGHT times we had a shot to go up more than 4, we missed. Then once we did, the flood gates opened.

Reporter: Do these long road trips wear on the team?

Tovarich: I don't think it matters. We could play in Florida one day and Alaska the next and they come out with 100% energy no matter what. It's like they're robots.

Tovarich: It was shocking to go to halftime tied. At point we were being outrebounded 9-2. They'd gotten 6 offensive rebounds in 3 possessions. We missed our first 5 3's. They made 6 in a row. Being +7 in turnovers in the first half was the only reason we were in it. That Forney guy was killing us. I hate having to double team a guard all the time, but god help me if I had to watch him shoot again. And yet, you tell them play tight and double team him and he's wide open repeatedly.

Reporter: What did you say at halftime?

Tovarich: I'd like to take credit for the 15-0 run to start the second half, but it was just them missing all of a sudden. Forney bricked his first 3 3's. We made out first 2. Didn't make one again the rest of the game, but that little spurt there to start was the decider.

Reporter: Why do you think you rebounded so well last game and so poorly today?

Tovarich: We did a good job making it back to -10 there at the end with all their rushed 3's they missed. Our bench played less than half the minutes and only got outrebounded 12-9 by the starters. They had some guy off the bench get 8 boards in 8 minutes. We're pitiful there. We're wildly inconsistent. I have given up worrying about. I've given up trying to explain it. We just can't rebound with any consistency. We can't do much of anything with any consistency.

Reporter: Will you take 29 points from Grady in exchange for only 2 rebounds?

Tovarich: He damn well better score if he need 9 minutes per rebound.

Who is the best rebounder coach Tovarich has ever coached?

What do you think, 1 more loss is the margin you have for the postseason?
?The Bulgarian Brothers - a story of two brothers (Oggy and Dinko) as they coach in the NCAA and the NBA.

?Ask me about the Xbox Ally handheld - I'm on the team that made it.

Statistically, it looks like Kovacevic from Georgia averaged a little over 8 rpg over my 3 years. Considering the quality of the Sun Belt, it really should have been one of my centers from WKU who were 2nd and 3rd overall in their class and yet, they were still in the 7 range per game, and that was even on a lower difficulty. As far as current Anchorage stats, Atkinson as a true FR averaged 5.5 and that hasn't been touched yet lol.

Tovarich: Sorry if you bet the over on that one. It felt a lot like the last game where only Grady was reliable. Everyone else largely struggled, though Farley came on at the end there with some 3's and Luz hit a couple late too. Then the other team really only has one guy hurting you and you have to revolve everything around him and just let some other people get you every once in a while so you don't rip your hair out at letting the same guy kill you over and over. That Duncan guy had 10 points in 3 1/2 minutes, and I couldn't take it anymore. Luckily the double teams got him to cough it up a few times. That Crosswhite guy got us for a few, but those were all in transition from turnovers, which we had an uncharacteristic amount of.

Reporter: It seemed like your transition game really struggled.

Tovarich: It was odd. We had a handful of breakaways and guys, mainly Crawford, but others too were sprinting down the court, and yet, they definitely weren't able to move at full speed. Someone ALWAYS caught up and contested the shot and we missed a dunk, got stuffed on some shots that should've been easy layins. It indeed looked like they were running with cement in their shoes.

Reporter: Did you essentially bench Wilkins?

Tovarich: I was happy with his rebounding. It was far better than anyone else's, but 3/10 shooting was enough for me to see.

Reporter: So you want the scoring more than the rebounding?

Tovarich: We're largely allergic to rebounding anyway, so I may as well take the scoring.

Studbucket: What do you think, 1 more loss is the margin you have for the postseason?

Tovarich: That seems like reality. 5 losses may even have been too many last year, we'll never truly know. This year we'll end up with 6 power opponents and 2 "major" ones. Last year we had 8 power opponents and the same 2 majors. Heading up to Fairbanks for the early tournament is a lot less of a contributor to your SOS than staying home for our tournament is. But some of these power opponents may be a losing battle. You'd hope we get credit for going to Auburn later, but last I saw Auburn was 3-11, so maybe that's actually hurting us more than helping.

Tovarich: I've never seen such amazing clutch defense. We got stuffed on EVERY tying or go ahead shot we had the last minute of the regulation and the entirety of overtime. Not surprising we missed the tying 3 at the buzzer. We couldn't hit a 3 to save our lives. They couldn't miss. Gomes averages 4.6 ppg and hit 4/5 3's. The PG averages 10 and hit all 4 of his. Literally whatever had to happen to stop us from winning happened. Stuffed at the buzzer in regulation, offensive rebound, putback gets stuffed. Every 3 was missed. 17 extra shots and we still lose. It felt like Texas A&M all over again only that team had talent. Another C who never missed a shot the whole game and got 5 blocks without ever committing a foul allegedly. It's incredible how 30 things go against you to make you feel like there was literally nothing you could do to win because whatever had to happen to stop you was going to happen. The backboard stand would've collapsed out of nowhere if it needed to. The fire alarm would've been pulled while we're on a breakaway, some fan was going to throw a drink on the court to cause a delay. Seriously, whatever had to happen was going to happen. The guards were ALL having a horrible game. It's not exactly the first time I've seen that. But then even the big guys suddenly couldn't make a layup without getting blocked. And twice we got the offensive rebound in OT only for the next shot to get blocked too. You'd think they couldn't have perfect timing EVERY time but apparently they can.

Reporter: So is UConn a must win?

Tovarich: We will full court press UConn from the opening tip, every possession for all 28 minutes no matter the score. If we're up 29 like they were, we will fire off a 3 at the buzzer, like they did. I'm not longer sure if it's because they ran it up on us last year or because I need to take out some frustration from probably the most frustrating game I've ever been involved in.

Nooooo, you can't have lost to Monmouth. That's rough. Hope UConn is a big turnaround.

Tovarich: Obviously tough to overcome -17 in rebounds. Doesn't matter what style you play, that's a tall task. Their blocking without fouling was amazing. They only gave him 7, but I bet it was well into the double digits, ALL of which were in the second half when we shot a whopping 16-39. Can't do that against a lot of teams, but especially not Connecticut.

Reporter: What now that you didn't get your revenge?

Tovarich: Hopefully Calhoun doesn't retire and we'll try again next year.

Reporter: What about now that your NCAA tournament chances are likely gone?

Tovarich: When we lost to Portland State and North Dakota State, the writing was on the wall. Monmouth was just putting the writer in permanent marker.

Reporter: Why do you think guards who average 8-10 ppg keep going crazy on you?

Tovarich: It's not a lack of effort on defense. We're right in their face a lot and they drill jump shots at an incredible clip anyway. I don't know what to do besides get more talent, more experience, more height, more everything.

Reporter: Do you need to make your schedule easier to get to the tournament?

Tovarich: We did make it the one year at 27-4, and that schedule wasn't really much easier than any other. I scheduled what I thought we could handle. And we should be able to handle it. Every team is more talented than the year before. We should be better than this, and we're just not. Wolfe is going to leave, but the other 9 who play are all back. Maybe we'll snag some decent recruits. Even though we'll be younger again next year, I'll schedule what I think they can handle. This year's results are a setback though, and it makes me question if they can handle as much as I think.

Reporter: Why are opposing big men piling up so many blocks?

Tovarich: It's even way more than the stats say. They stuffed our last jumper before we got the pointless putback at the buzzer there and it didn't register a block for them. I am sure they had at least 15. You have to go back to Texas A&M where we last had more than 11 FT's. We're being aggressive getting the ball down low. Apparently they're all coached better than my guys are to outblock us 3-1 regularly without fouling as much as we do. Maybe that's another answer of just getting more talent.

Tovarich: Could've used something resembling that performance 2 games ago. Very frustrating to watch that kind of performance after watching the last two.

Reporter: Congrats on your 100th win coach!

                              Tovarich: Yippee!

                              Reporter: Doesn't the milestone matter?

Tovarich: No. I'd have hoped to get to 17 this season earlier than this. It's been a disappointing season.

Reporter: So what was different today?

Tovarich: We got to the line, we shot well. We were active on defense and got some steals, we finished in transition. Our rebounding was mediocre, which is an improvement too.

Reporter: What is the goal for the rest of the season?

Tovarich: To build for next year. We have Auburn left, who despite the 4-12 record will be more talented than us. Other than that, we only have one winning team left. We have a lot of road games though, and we suck at those. We need to play better and hopefully build a little consistency for next year.

Tovarich: I'm not sure who invented the triangle and 2 and if there's really any strategy to it other than legitimately just hoping the other team shoots badly on 3's, like we did in the first half when we were 4/20. Hope isn't much of a strategy but we spent that entire first half trying to find someone to shoot some 3's. It was brutal. Finally Pippen and Spears found it in the second half. It's such a weird game, weird defense to see. We're probably lucky they shot like garbage too and can't score much because 74 on 63 shots is pretty sad and not the kind of efficiency that typically wins you a game against anyone with a pulse. There's such potential to put up astronomical numbers against that style, but we didn't really capitalize on it either game with them. Luz was pretty astronomical in the wrong way.

Reporter: Why do you think Dartmouth coach employs that defense?

Tovarich: Because no one at Dartmouth is really paying attention. Your average student probably never attends a game and no one really notices what goes on in this gym unless it's the alternate library if they have to close the regular one. This is a great testing area for weird gimmicks like that. No one can mock you when no one knows.

Reporter: Your RPI sits at 42. Are you sure you're eliminated from the tournament?

Tovarich: We don't exactly have a lot of SOS left. Jax State is the only winning team. Auburn is better than us on paper but were 4-12 I think, so they're going to probably do more harm than good if we can even beat them. If you can't beat a 4-12 power school, you don't deserve it anyway, but I don't think there's any going up in the RPI with these teams' records we have left.
