Like Westley in the Princess Bride, you've built up an immunity to rat poison this season it seems. 20-1 is a pretty good place to be when it comes to positioning yourself for the tournament.

Tovarich: After 31 days away, I almost couldn't remember where I even lived or how to get to the arena. It was almost strange to see our court after so long. We still sold the game out. I wasn't sure if our fans remembered we existed either.

Reporter: Why shoot so many 3's in a lopsided win?

Tovarich: I'd like them to shoot out of their funk. We had a decent first half, I think 4-9. We didn't follow it up after halftime.

Reporter: How about Dillard shooting 3 of them?

Tovarich: I just wanted to see if he could. He's 2/18 now, so I'm officially giving up on that. He's either going to have to improve that a lot of maybe a backup PG is an option for him if I can't recruit another, or maybe I can RS one.

Reporter: Were you encouraged by the rebounding?

Tovarich: Eventually. The irony of being +9 on the boards is that they got 5 of their first 6 misses back. I'm not sure what changed. We had their bigs in foul trouble for most of the game, but we've done that dozens of times and managed not to reap any benefit from it.

Reporter: Is it a big deal for the program to be ranked in the top 10 for the first time?

Tovarich: The media pollsters are awfully generous to reward us for a gaudy record. The coaches just moved us into the top 25 finally for the first time. They're probably being more realistic.

Tovarich: I'd be embarrassed to lose a game where I shot 12/19 on 3's and won the rebounding battle. You should probably shoot a 3 on every possession like that. We were in their face. It didn't matter what we did though. So, that said, we won somehow. It wasn't pretty, but it doesn't have to be.

Reporter: Is taking over #1 in the RPI significant?

Tovarich: We were 2 before. Somehow I don't think it makes much of a difference. I think we found the right schedule this year with more solid mids and majors with good records and fewer power schools with few wins.

Reporter: Do you feel the 3-point shooters came out of their slump a little today?

Tovarich: That was definitely better. We were no Fresno State from out there, but we were solid enough for once.

Reporter: Is there a danger of looking past Loyola Marymount ahead to the Oregon game?

Tovarich: I don't think so. We're just happy to be home for a little while right now before we had back on another tour of the country for 3 weeks or whatever it is.

Tovarich: I feared we might get run out of the gym there coming out of halftime. It wasn't anything I hadn't seen before, but when you get stuffed on your first shot, then they get a 3, then you get stuffed again, and they hit a 3 again, then get a steal and a breakaway layup and it's 8-0 in barely a minute and your 18 point lead goes all the way down to 2 within 4 1/2 minutes, it isn't encouraging. Then I don't know what changed. After their 22-6 run to start the second half, I think we went on a 22-2 run. Then suddenly they couldn't miss that last 2 minutes but it was over by then. I'm always leery of it when we go into halftime with a big lead, but 7/8, 4 of which were 3's while we start 1/10 feels a little overboard.

Reporter: Why don't you call a timeout when the other team is on a big run like that?

Tovarich: I typically find it doesn't change much. I can give all the instructions I would in a huddle out loud. I subbed in the bench for a couple minutes there. That didn't do much either. Their assault kept going. Then they just snapped out of it all of a sudden and we did the opposite. There were some wild runs in that game.

Reporter: Do you feel the outside shooting didn't carry over from the last game?

Tovarich: We were ok in the first half, 3/7 I think. After missing the first 4 after halftime, I just abandoned the 3's. It seemed obvious they weren't allowed.

Reporter: Where does this game @ Oregon rank in the history of the program?

Tovarich: It's as important a regular season game as we've had, but regular season college basketball isn't exactly critical for us right now. Barring some mass injuries, the likes of which we've never experienced, we're heading to the tournament and even though Oregon's probably a little disappointed in their season, they are too and ultimately these don't really get remembered unless someone runs up the score or someone gets injured.

I think Oggy might be able to defeat this parallel universe LMU team.

Do you think you can get a 2 seed? Or more in 4-6 range?

Tovarich: That's one of the tougher opponents we play this year. Basketball is really easy when you shoot 8/13 behind the arc and don't embarrass yourself rebounding.

Reporter: Were you surprised at the rebounding?

Tovarich: Considering we can be -20 against cupcakes sometimes, -1 against a big school is good for us. I was stunned to see a big school with a C who only averages 4.7 boards per game. If the guy wanted to spend his college career being bad at rebounding, he could've just signed with me.

Reporter: Are you surprised when teams play zone against you?

Tovarich: I think we've established we'll chuck it if you let us, and we're usually pretty good at it. At the very least, I'm surprised when we're 8/13 and you get one of those stubborn "this is how we play" coaches who don't change to something else when it's not working.

Studbucket: Do you think you can get a 2 seed? Or more in the 4-6 range?

Tovarich: After forcing all of college basketball to stop for 6 1/2 months while I mulled over this question, I don't see why we can't be a 1...now that we beat Oregon on the road. We are #1 in the RPI and we have mostly cupcakes left. There's a good chance we go into the tournament at 30-1. Our SOS is decent at least, maybe not as hard as I thought though. If this result went as a loss, then I'd say a 2 is realistic.

I'm glad coach Tovarich addressed the elephant in the room: holding the college basketball world hostage for months at a time. It's a superpower most coaches don't have.

Tovarich: We appeared to be stuck in neutral on offense there for quite a while. That would have been a tight game without Fleming's efforts scoring.

Reporter: Was there an emotional letdown after such a big win at Oregon?

Tovarich: I'd like to use that as an excuse, but these guys are robots. Every game just exists on its own. Nothing we did last game matters.

Reporter: Was the arena being 90% empty a factor?

Tovarich: I'm not sure the population of this thriving metropolis we are in here, but you'd think a top 6 school in the country visiting would be something to get excited about. I guess not.

Reporter: What do you make of Wilkins' performance?

Tovarich: I thought he was solid after he started 0-7.

Reporter: Did you consider benching him?

Tovarich: If we weren't in nowhereville playing a cupcake team, I very possibly would have done that.

Reporter: Was there any lookahead to a revenge game against Portland State?

Tovarich: I know I have been looking forward to that, but I purposely gave us a mental reprieve between a top 25 team and a revenge game so we're not having to give a big motivational speech twice in a row. They tend to tune you out if you pretend Eastern Washington is the Super Bowl too.

I've been to Cheney and EWU. Not a lot happening there. Mid-sized school (I think like 10k students), but a small town in between Spokane and Pullman.

                        Tovarich: (yawns) Any questions?

Reporter: Where was all the full-court press and shooting at the buzzer to run up the score in revenge?

Tovarich: I forgot that despite that coach's eagerness to pile on us last season, he still got fired for being 8-20 and now lives in obscurity as an assistant at Drexel, so I sort of lost the motivation. No fiery speech, no revenge talk. We just went out and showed them by playing uninspired, below average basketball in their energy-less half-filled arena and beat them by an unconvincing margin. That'll teach 'em, right?

Reporter: So will you get revenge on Drexel?

Tovarich: It's not as fulfilling to go do that, just to get back at an assistant. The head coach of Drexel has a poor choice in assistants, but that offense doesn't rise to the standard of caring enough about them to get revenge. I'll have one of my assistants monitor his career and let me know if any school is dumb enough to hire him as a head coach again at some point and I'll remind him about it at that point. Getting revenge on the Portland State university itself, their new coach who had nothing to do with it and the players wearing jerseys that merely say Portland State wasn't going to accomplish much for me.

Reporter: Is there much motivation left for the team these remaining games?

Tovarich: Our next 3 opponents are 20-50 and we're likely to get three more sparse crowds while we head east before returning to Portland yet again on our way home, so no. It's not easy to find anyone to play late in the season like this, so that's reality. The schedule has to be front-loaded and we'll up the toughness of it next year for sure.
