Re: Bringing the Pride Back (HC 09)

WEEK 16, DECEMBER 18, 2010 PANTHERS VS BROWNS

The Browns looked good over all. I am starting to lose faith in Joseph. He almost always runs back towards defenders so I am unsure of what to do with him at this time. He has had flashes of being very good...but then he overdoses on stupid pills... The defense once again gave up BIG yards to one receiver. I am seeing what is happening I just need to figure out how to stop it.

Well the Colts and the Patriots both lost so I have won the Conference. I am thinking very strongly of sitting my starters and just simming this last game against Pittsburgh. I wont gain anything by winning, but an injury would be lethal at this point. But that 16 win season would be nice...but a Super Bowl win would be nicer...

Re: Bringing the Pride Back (HC 09)

I decided to just sim the final game of the season, in the big scheme of things it didnt matter if I won or not. I lost 27-24 to the Steelers. But I didnt risk injury to any of my key players.

I also signed MLB Gino King. I had been trying to sign him to a 5 year deal worth 10.8 million with a 2 million bonus. He kept dropping his demand, but he would not neogitate. He would make his demand, I would respond and he would do the "accept this deal or I walk" thing. I dont like paying incentives, so I was able to sign him to a 5 year deal worth 10.8 million, but the bonus was 5 million. He is young though and has been great in the middle of my defense.

HB Joseph is another story though. I didnt give him an offer for a couple of weeks yet he walked out every time after that. I looked at his numbers for progression and I may have to Franchise Tag him to try to get him to sign another year. He makes stupid mistakes...but he also makes great plays.

DIVISONAL PLAYOFFS, JANUARY 8, 2011 BROWNS VS RAVENS

Well this one was almost too much for the ole ticker. Did I say I HATE playing the Ravens? Maybe it is because I had 3 trips to the Red Zone in the first half, all inside the 15 and ended up having to kick 3 FGs. Maybe it is because I had a 28 pass interfernce call on a 3 and 18 that put them on the 38 where on the next play Rice broke 4 tackles on the way to the end zone. Or it might be the fact that I couldnt get a first down in the 2nd half until there was less than 3 minutes left in the 3rd.

But all is well that ends well. After they took the lead with 2 minutes left I stuffed them on the 2 point conversion. But after getting 1 1st Down I failed on a 4th Down conversion attempt and turned the ball over on my 48 with 1:56 left. My Defense stepped up though and forced a punt. I used 2 of my TOs to keep some time on the clock so I got the ball back at the 20 with 1:01 left and 1 time out, I was able to get to the 50, but once again was facing a 4th and 10 with 46 seconds left and 1 time out. I called a 4 wide comeback route and hit Rudolph at the 36 yard line. I hurriedly called another pass play and completed for a 1st and 10 at the 16 with 15 seconds left. I let the clock run down to 3 seconds and took my last time out. After lining up for the FG the Ravens called a time out. I once again called for a FG and Serna nailed it as the clock it 0:00 for the 2 point win! My heart bout jumped out of my chest! Did I say I HATE playing the Ravens??? CB ERic Wright has a strained MCL and is out 3-4 weeks.

CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP: BROWNS VS COLTS, JANUARY 16, 2011

I thought this one was going to end my run as I went down 9-0 at the end of the 1st. I had given up a Safety and the ensueing kick resulted in a TD. I had 0, zilch, nada yards of offense at the end of the Quarter and it didnt look much better as I started the 2nd. But then the team started to come alive. I shocked myself as Edwards finally got thrown to and held on to the ball! I scored 31 unanswered points to put the Browns in the Super Bowl. All I can say is...WOW!

The Saints beat Tampa Bay 27-24 so I will face them again....will see how that goes tomorrow.

SUPER BOWL, JANUARY 30, 2011, BROWNS VS SAINTS

To be honest, this game was a little bit of a disappoitment after what the 2 previous games had been like. I thought it was going to be another "Brees/Colston Show" as they marched down the field on the opening drive, but OLB Cody picked off a Brees pass at the 8 and raced 92 yards for a TD, a fumble with a FG and another INT for a TD gave me a 17-0 lead at the end of the 1st and I never looked back. The only laughable part was the 2 Pass Interfernce calls I had, ironically on both of their scoring drives, a 36 yarder and a 41 yarder. But I will let the defense off of the hook for those considering they forced 5 turnovers. WR Donte Stallworth had a "mystery injury" on game day and didnt play. RB Reggie Bush was injured for the Saints.

Re: Bringing the Pride Back (HC 09)

I will be starting on the off-season things tonight. I will probably franchise Joseph. I am going to let Edwards go, as you can see, when he was a factor in the game, he had more drops than TDS...hence my nickname for him...Butterfingers Braylon.

My defensive secondary was AWFUL for 90% of the season...then in the post-season they actually started to play well. I guess it finally clicked. You can see that I gave up over 10,000 passing yards. That equal to over 500 yards a game! WAY TOO MUCH! So that is a BIG need I will be looking at.

The coaches all stayed so I am very pleased with that. I will post an update once I get some of this other stuff finished.

Here are some of the end-of-year stats.

Re: Bringing the Pride Back (HC 09)

Well after was all said and done...I decided not to Franchise Tag RB Joeseph. Okay, he had 1100 yards and went to the Pro Bowl. But it was going to cost $9.6 million. That was 3 million more than he wanted during the regular season. I also was looking at his numbers...I mean...he makes some really STUPID plays. He would miss a wide open hole, run out of bounds for no reason and when all he had to do was run down the field for a HUGE gain...he would...well...it seemed like..***n around in a circle almost until someone tackled him.

I remembered when I intially signed him that his awareness was low. I looked back and it was 45...well...when I was looking...trying to decide what to do about him...it was still 45. So that explains the bonehead plays.

I may try to sign him during FA. I am still not sure yet.

                    I have 3 goals for the off-season:

                    1. Sign a CB of over 85. This is probably not going to happen...
                    2. Sign a K of over 85. I will just keep Serna
                    3. Sign a HB of over 85. The jury is still out on this one...

My biggest need is my CBs. I have 2 on the roster now. Both of them were backups all season so that unit will be completely redone. However, the draft class looks weak and there are not any strong, younger names on the FA boards. Still trying to figure that one out.

Here are the major off-season coahcing changes:
Raiders: HC: Jon Gruden hired, Eric Mangini fired, hired as 49ers DC
Redskins: Al Saunders hired, John Mitchell fired, hired as Cardinals DC

I like to see ex-players hired as coaches, here are some:
                      Bears
                      QB: Jake Delhomme
                      49ers
                      RB: Warrick Dunn
                      Jets
                      OL: Stump Mitchell
                      RB: Earnet Byner
                      Lions
                      LB: Derrick Brooks
                      Panthers
                      LB: Zach Thomas
                      DL: Teddy Bruschi

Re: Bringing the Pride Back (HC 09)

During FA, the owner wanted me to sign three players:
                        1. A CB of over 85
                        2. A K of over 85
                        3. A RB of over 85

I tendered the following players and kept them:
                        K Serna: Level 2, 2nd Round
DT Rubin: Level 4, 1st and 3rd Round

I also signed 2 players in FA.

I decided to try to sign RB Joseph. I guess it doesnt make sense considering I am still not 100% sold on him. But I felt he could continue to improve. I will make sure I add as many of the things as I can to help him develop (Learning, Intangibles) as I can. So I signed him to a 5 year deal, $26 million, with a $4 million signing bonus.

I also spent alot of time looking at the CBs available. I saw alot of guys 32and older who wanted 3+ year contracts. I checked their health and no one was over 83% so I re-signed CB McDonald to a 4 year, $16 million deal with a $2.5 million bonus.

I was also interested in bringing CB Joe Norton and DT Dre Moore back, but they never came up for re-signing nor were they listed as FA after the pre-season started. I am not sure where they went.

                          DRAFT DAY, 2011

I had a very active draft day. I made 4 trades and ended up drafting 14 players.

1-32: HB Marcus Mercer, New Mexico State, sleeper and GM Recommendation. Signed to a 5 yr $12.33 million deal with $2.0 million bonus, no incentives. Hope he can compete with Joseph.
2-64: I rolled the dice here to wait a little longer to get a TE, but he was taken before I got him. But I traded this pick to the Lions, for their 3-89 and 4-114 picks.
3-89: I lost out on 2 players I wanted here so I traded this to the Falcons for their 5-132 and 2012 5th round pick, along with CB Chevis Jackson, who they had been trying to trade to me earlier.
3-96: No one I felt I had to take here so I traded to the Bears for their 4-109, 6-173 and 2012 6th Round.
4-98: Also traded to the Bears for their 2012 3rd and 2012 7th Round picks.
4-109: WR Charles Wilkes, Florida State, signed to a 3 year, $1.3 million deal.
4-114: DT Josh Adkins, GM recommendation, Kansas, 3 yr/$1.16 million deal
4-124: LOLB Vincent Gordon: Virginia Tech, 3 yr/$1.3 million
4-128: RG Tai Fitzgerald, Boise State, 3 yr/$1.14 million
                          5-132: QB Johnnie Gore, Bowling Green, 3 yr/$760 k
                          6-173: LE Sam Lewis, Walla Walla, 3 yr/$660 k
                          6-184: TE Bernard Fellow, 3 yr/$660 k
                          6-185: MLB Wesley Whitman, 3 yr/$680 k
6-189: SS Michael Dawson, SE Missouri State, 3 yr/$700 k
                          6-192: CB Cris Ricks, Wisconsin, 3 yr/$670 k
                          7-211: RT Eric Reeves, Iowa, 3 yr/$810 k
                          7-219: CB Moe Buckely, Virginia, 3 yr/$790 k
                          7-224: C Cornelius Hunter, Coastal Carolina, 2 yr/$810 k

                          Undrafted Free Agents:
                          C Zach Cannon, Miami
HB Bo Stevens, cut as soon as camp opened, bad legs
                          MLB Sean Blair, VMI
                          TE Brandon Lane, Wheaton
CB AShton Holmberg, cut as soon as camp opened, bad legs

                          GM Camp Invites:
                          P Marcus McComas, Cincinnati
                          P CJ Peterson, Florida
                          CB Corwin Miles, Penn
                          WR Rob Jackson, Hampton
                          LE Dan Finley, Coastal Carolina

Just a side note...QB Tom Brady is yet to be signed. He is 35, a 98 and his FA price is $6 million.

Thanks, I was reading yours as well. I will be following it.

I am actually going to leave at the end of this season, and go to the worst team that offers me a job.

I cut him after the 2nd season. He was a FA this season but as of now is unsigned.

Just to give you a quick update. I have played the first 3 Pre-season games:

Week 1: Browns 37, Bengals 30, overcame 5 turnovers in that one.

Week 2: Browns 16, Bears 17, I lost this game. I thought I only had 1 TO but I had 2 and the clock expired before I could kick the FG.

Week 3: Browns 41, Steelers 7. The running game showed some life...FINALLY. But it was Mercer who lite it up. Granted, it was against their 2nd string, but he seems to move much smoother than than Joseph with the ball. I am going to play him with the first string in the last pre-season game to see how he does. I may find that I wasted all that money on Joseph...

                                Trades:
C Hank Fraley: Jets for their 2013 3rd Round pick. They immediately cut him then re-signed him for $3.2 million, then promptly cut him again.

MLB Dan Ward: Broncos 2013 5th and 7th Round picks. The Rookies that I brought in made him expendable.

DT Shaun Rogers: The alabatros is gone! I traded him to the Redskins for their 2013 3rd Round pick. He spent the whole 2nd half of last season so injured he never even saw the game field, let alone the practice field. His health was a 42% at one point. His torso got down to 0 but yet he never went on IR. I took a $3 million hit to trade him, but his salary was wasted as he NEVER could play. I guess it is the game's version of the Redskins and Albert Haynesworth...

Overall most of the draft picks got cut. I will post a roster after the last pre-season game.
