Re: Bringing the Pride Back (HC 09)

I just finished the last pre-season game against the Dolphins. I won 45-26. One of their TDs came on an INT from Appling and another against my 2nd string defense. I was using this to fine tune the defense so I was not too worred aobut how they played.

The running game took off. Mercer had 84 yards, averaging 6.4 yrds per carry against their 1st string defense. Joseph came in and averaged 5.6, but that was against their 2nd string defense. So it looks like I am going to use a rotation to see how that works. Maybe start Mercer and then rotate them every quarter.

I also made some roster changes. I moved SS Ward to CB and RT Shaffer to C. However, Shaffer was injured in the Miami game and went on IR for 7-9 months for head trauma.

I signed C Sleepy Sweat from Wofford to a 1 year deal to take his place.

I also signed DT Moore again. My DTs were weak and even though he is a jek when it comes to re-signing, he does help in the middle. I cut DT Adkins (72/74) to make room for him.

I also signed RE Destin Ferguson from UNLV to a 1 year deal. I cut Re Purcell to make room for him

Re: Bringing the Pride Back (HC 09)

I promised that we would make the playoffs. Here are the goals for this year:

      1. Beat the Steelers in Week 1 (MNF) at home.
      2. Win 3 of first 4.
      2. Re-sign DT Rubin
      4. Re-sign RE Johnson
      5. Re-sign K Serna
      6. Win DROY
      7. Bring back OC Rob Chudzinski
      8. Brinck back DC Mike Singletary

Coaching staff for 2011. There were no changes here, just upgrades.

      OC: Chudzinski, overall 77
      DC: Singletary, overall 97
      ST: Harbaugh, overall 53

WEEK 1, SEPTEMBER 5, 2011, MONDAY NIGHT GAME, BROWNS VS STEELERS

The year started off well with the Browns winning fairly easily over the visiting Steelers. Some questions were answered and others popped up. I think RB Joseph might get traded. He just isnt smart with the ball. He had 9 carries with 3 broken tackles and 4 tackles behind the line. RB Mercer had 22 carries with 12 broken tackles and was tackled behind the line 2 times. He did have one fumble, but Woodley was behind the line before the ball even got pitched to Mercer. Also, my Red Zone problems continue. It seems like if I get inside the 20, that is when I get a holding call, or a dumb pass. I am not sure what to do at this point, just keep trying to figure something out.

Re: Bringing the Pride Back (HC 09)

          WEEK 2, SEP 1, 2011, BROWNS @ SEATTLE

The Browns won this one in the 2nd half under a stingy defense and a methodical offense. Seahawks QB Matt Hasseleack was injured but back-up Troy Wade from New Hampshire had a great 1st half, going 15-20, but fell apart the 2nd completing only 3-8 and throwing 2 INTs. The Browns were able to pull away from a 17-13 halftime lead to win comfortably 39-13.

The running back situation became more complicated as rookie RB Mercer did not play a down. He was listed on the depth chart, but never took the field. I checked and re-checked the injury news and he was not listed there either. Joseph just continues to disappoint. So I pulled him after 2 horrible runs and put in the 3rd RB Robert Brooks. He had a great game, but got injured on the next to last play, separating his shoulder meaning he is out for 4-5 weeks. I signed RB Alridge for 510K to fill in for him.

          But back to Joseph..he
fumbled on the 9 yard line, then 2 plays, I really didnt get. One was a draw where he just did a great slide, with no one near him, losing 6 yards. The other though just blew my mind. It was after Brooks got hurt, 3rd and 6 from the 17. I call an inside hand off and he has a great opening. He runs right through the hole and approaches the 11 yard line for the 1st down, there are 2 DBs coming from his left but all he has to do is take one more step and he will easily have the 1st down allowing me to run 1 more play and kill the clock. But no, he jumps backwards and then runs towards the DBS, they tackle him short of the 1st down so it is 4th and short. Those are the kind of plays that mean I am going to trade him. But I want to make sure Mercer is back from where he disappeared to.

Well, I will post the stats if people want to see them, but the team played good.

Brooks averaged 5.8 per carry and Joseph did average 4.6 and have 2 TDs, but I am still not pleased with him...I guess it wouldnt matter as much if I didnt watch him make such bonehead plays while players with lower ratings played better.
