      2005 Michigan Football

      Continuing the Tradition...

      • The most total wins in college football history - 842
      • The highest all-time winning percentage (.74588)
      • Leading the NCAA in home attendance every year but one since 1974.
      • The longest current streak of having over 100,000 at a home game - 186 consecutive games.
      • The longest current bowl game streak - 30.
      • The longest current streak of non-losing seasons - 37
      • The longest ongoing streak in the nation finishing ranked in the Top 25 (20 consecutive seasons through 2004).
      • The longest consecutive number of weeks appearing in the AP poll - 108 (Miami is second with 88).
      • The longest number of games in Div 1-A since last being shutout by another team - 250 games through Texas in 2005 Rose Bowl.
      • The most televised school in college football history (344 televised games).
      • The largest NCAA crowd to ever watch a football game: 112,118 on November 22, 2003, at Michigan Stadium.
      • 42 conference football championships (most of any team in any conference)
      • 25 undefeated seasons (more than any other Division 1-A school).
      • Highest all-time strength of schedule (SOS) rating in college football -- per cfbdatawarehouse.com.
      • 73 years since playing a (non WWII era) non Division-1A opponent, longest of any program in the country.
      • 108 winning seasons -- most in college football history.
      • 7 National Championships: (1901, 1902, 1918, 1933, 1947, 1948, 1997)
      • One of only two schools with a winning record vs. every Division 1-A conference, including independents.
      • "The Victors" is the only fight song inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.

      The 125th Michigan Football Team

      Season Preview
      Volume 1, Issue 1

Masterful offense, mediocre defense could make for interesting 2005 season for Victors Valiant

ANN ARBOR, MI--What's that flash of orange?!

Oh, it's Texas quarterback Vince Young, and he's STILL running around, over and through the Michigan defense!

Dusty Mangum barely gets the FG away to beat UM in last season's Rose Bowl.

2004 ended in heartbreaking fashion for the Michigan faithful, as despite getting pulverized by the scrambling quarterback from Texas, Michigan was inches away from blocking Dusty Mangum's last second FG. Alas, they didn't, and Texas won the greatest Rose Bowl of all time, 38-37.

The game saw a spectacular end to Braylon Edward's amazing career, as he went out with 10 catches for 109 yards and 3 TDs, concluding a season that saw him win the Biletnikoff Award as the nation's top receiver. He ended his career with almost all off Michigan's major receiving records, and will be remembered mostly for his heroic effort in rallying Michigan from a 27-10 deficit to a 45-37 triple overtime win vs. Michigan State in which he had 11 receptions for 189 yards and 3 scores, 2 of the amazing leaping variety.

With "The Digit" departed to the NFL, the Wolverines would figure to drop off a bit offensively, right? Wrong.

Even without Edwards, the Wolverines have the best offense in the Big Ten. Sophomore sensation return in the backfield in the form of quarterback Chad Henne and running back Mike Hart. It will be interesting to see if Henne can progress with Edwards. He does have capable WRs, though, as Steve Breaston is a huge threat, and Jason Avant has hands like glue. Hart led the Big Ten in rushing in his freshman season, and this year he may defer some of his carries to super-freshman Kevin Grady, who is expected to see significant time.

On the offensive line, monsters Matt Lentz and Adam Stenavich return for their Senior years at Guard and Tackle. The other Tackle spot is secured by promising sophomore Jake Long, who is the next in the long line of excellent Michigan linemen. At the other Guard is another youngster, sophomore Adam Kraus, and junior Reuben Riley will be making most of the snaps at center.

Vince Young was a man among the boys that was Michigan's run defense.

      And then, there's the defense.

The defensive line is actually one of the best in the conference, with big Gabe Watson back for one final year at DT, and speedy DE LaMarr Woodley looking for a breakout Junior year. Jeremy Van Alstyne and Pat Massey round out a very nice line.

And then in the back seven, it all comes undone, just like it did vs. Texas.

There's a log jam at Linebacker, and only some sparkle. There may not be a Jarrett Irons, or a Sam Sword, or a Larry Foote. As of now, the starting three are Prescott Burgess, Christopher Graham, and David Harris, but others, like Pierre Woods, Shawn Crable, and Scott McClintock may get into the starting lineup, and will definitely see action.

The secondary gets hit the hardest, losing All-American CB Marlin Jackson to the NFL's first round, and exploder safety Ernest Shazor, who somewhat surprisingly left a year early--only to go undrafted. They also lose the other starting CB, Markus Curry. FS Ryan Mundy is the only returning starter, but there is SOME talent here. Junior CB Leon Hall is poised for a breakout season, and will start opposite senior Grant Mason. Replacing Shazor at SS is difficult, and right now the job belongs to sophomore Brandent Englemon, but fellow sophomore Jamar Adams will push him.

On special teams, Junior Garrett Rivas brings stability to the FG kicking, and freshman punter Zoltan Mesko has a cannon for a leg. Explosive Stevie Breaston will handle most kickoffs and punts.

Michigan SHOULD be 7-0 heading into the October 22nd showdown in Iowa City against the Hawkeyes, but potential pitfalls include a night game at rowdy Camp Randall vs. Wisconsin, and at Michigan State, where the Spartans want revenge for last year's OT classic.

It seems unlikely that the Wolverines could make it to Pasadena again for the Rose Bowl, since it's the National Championship this season. But another BCS Bowl could be a possibility if the defense finds consistency. Otherwise Michigan will be spending Bowl season in Florida at the Capital One or Outback Bowl.

This should be fun, Psy. Seeing as how this was the team I told you to use in the first place.

Atleast Henne and Hart won't be in the Top 5 for Heisman like in every dynasty.

Wolverines muzzle the Wolfe, blast UNI 49-14 in opener

ANN ARBOR, MI--And Michigan's dominance of the MAC conference continues.

After a slow start and only a 21-14 halftime lead, Mike Hart found his legs in the second half and rolled through the defense as Michigan blew out Northern Illinois, 49-14.

Chad Henne was very efficient in the first game of his sophomore campaign, going 12-19 (63%) for 179 yards with three TDs and no interceptions. Hart started out poorly, with his first seven carries netting a negative five yards. But as the Michigan offense kept the Huskies' defense on the field, they wore down, and Hart finished with 156 yards on 28 carries and a career high four TDs. Freshman Kevin Grady carried the ball 14 times for 57 yards, breaking several tackles and showing quite a motor. Receiving wise, Steve Breaston caught 6 passes for 80 yards and a TD, and Jason Avant caught 4 for 55 and a TD. Sophomore Adrian Arrington caught Chad Henne's other TD.

For UNI, Phil Horvath was 5-10 passing for 131 yards and a pair of touchdowns, but two interceptions as well. Star running back Garrett Wolfe was contained, carrying 20 times for 55 yards. Sam Hurd had an 82 yard touchdown after blown coverage by Michigan's secondary.

OLB Prescott Burgess led UM with 6 tackles and a sack, followed by 5 from Leon Hall and Gabe Watson. Watson also had a sack, and DE Jeremy Van Alstyne had another. Linebackers Chris Graham and David Harris each had an INT.

OLBs Javan Lee and T.J Griffin each had 8 tackles for UNI, followed by 6 each from Ray Smith and Martin Wilson. The Huskies forced one turnover, a fumble recovery by Wilson. They had no sacks.

Next week, Michigan's #2 rival, the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame come to the Big House. The Wolverines are looking for revenge for last year's 28-20 collapse in South Bend.
