The Coaching Career of Jon McGurk(CH2K7-360)

"Heyyyyy folks good morning! You're listening to the Ted and Head Morning Show on AM 670 The DUNK, your sports talk radio of Charleston. I'm Ted and my partner over there is Head."

    "Hiya buddies!"

"Get up outta that bed and wipe that sleep outta your eyes because have we got a story for you. I have here a confirmed report that late last night, our own EIU Panthers have hired an unheralded Jon McGurk to be the head coach of the men's basketball team."

    "Jon McWho?"

    "Jon McGurk, Head."

    "Who the heck is that?"

"I don't know, but we're about to find out. Let's go to the phones. Jon, you there?"

    Coach McGurk: "Yes, hello fellas."
Ted: "Hi and welcome to Charleston. Listen, first things first. Who are you?"
Coach McGurk: "Heh, well I've been coaching in DII and DIII schools for about three years now and figured it was about time to step up to DI. EIU was gracious enough to accept me after talking it over with them."
Ted: "So you had more than one school in mind? Why did you decide to stick with us, Coach?"
Coach McGurk: "Yeah, it was either here or Northern Colorado. They have a pretty good center and a decent shooting guard over there but a lot of the rest of the team were upperclassmen. I wanted a chance to jump into a young team right away and give them the opportunity to develop into a team that I think can go farther than they think they can."
Ted: "How far is that, coach?"
Coach McGurk: "Well the last time we've made it into the big tournament was 2001. I'd like to get us back there and maybe do a little damage. I am a very defensive minded coach and believe defense can take any team as far as they want."
Head: "Coach, hi this is Head!"
    Coach McGurk: "Uh, hi 'Head.'"
Head: "So what do you like about your team in the small amount of time you've gotten to know them?"
Coach McGurk: "Well, 'Head', like I said before, they're a young, hungry group of guys that want to win. There are a lot of guys not starting that I'm sure will be given plenty of playing time. I also like our size for such a small school. Julio Anthony and Bobby Catchings ought to give opposing shooting guards fits on both ends.
Ted: "Coach how about recruiting. I know it's early but what is going to be your strategy to get the guys you want on your team?"
Coach McGurk: "Well to start I am going to get what I can, but I fully believe in looking outside the border for undiscovered talent.
Ted: Alright, thanks for the time, Coach. We gotta take a break. We'll be right back!

      Ted
: ".....Allllright we're back, and it's the day after the first game of the season and what a game it was!"
      Head: "You got that right!"
Ted: "Ok, Head, as per usual on the morning after a game, we have Ted and Head's Post Game Roundtable, aaaaaaaand not to stray from the path, we have a very tired Coach Jon McGurk on the phone with us. Coach, congratulations on the win last night. How does it feel?"
Coach McGurk: "Thanks Ted, it feels great. My guys played real hard for me to make sure we got that win and I'm proud of them."
Head: "Glad to hear it. Coach, take us through the game. What worked? What didn't work? Where can you improve? What did you do well?"
Coach McGurk: "Well Head, that's a lot of questions. I thought we did a really good job adjusting defensively to whatever they threw at us. We stayed in man most of the game to try and take #2 out of the game, and that worked out really well. But then they started feeding the post and forced us into a 2-3 Zone.
Ted: "Alright, how about what didn't work or what you can improve on?"
Coach McGurk: "We need to hit our free throws. I think we went something like 2 for 9 last night, and we need to do way better than that. We also need to work on rebounding. When they started feeding the post it wouldn't have been so bad if they hadn't got so many second, third, and even fourth opportunities to put the ball back in. One of my big guys is going to have to step up and take charge in the paint.
Ted: "Were there any suprises? Guys you thought did better than you were expecting?"
Coach McGurk: "Well, Romain Martin had a hell of a game, which is why I kept him in there from off the bench for so long. It seemed like every minute he was out there, he grew more and more confident in his abilities and hit some big shots for us. I even called plays for him for awhile.
Head: "Coach were you concerned at all that the game might have been slipping away from you when they came back midway through the second half to go up 49-48?"
Coach McGurk: "I was a little concerned, yes. It was the first game of the season and I was still trying to find a good rotation. The guys I had out there during that stretch didn't mesh well together. Overall, though, I am really glad we got the win."
Ted: "Alright Coach, you have a tough weekend ahead of you with two more games in two more days. Get some sleep!"

That was a good start for the Panthers with the win over UL Monroe. The tests for the team will be the Iowa State Cyclones and the DePaul Blue Demons, both BCS (power) conference schools.

Good luck and continued success from Coach Bob Knight of (still) the Army Black Knights.

Ted: "Good mornin' fellas, let's get right to it. If you didn't see the game last night then you may have missed an NCAA Moment of the Year, as Freshman shooting guard Romain Martin of our very own Panthers exploded for 48 points, an NCAA high so far this year."
          Head: "Holy smokes, for real?"
Ted: "You bet Head. I'll tell ya, I was at the game last night and it was just an unbelievable, magical moment that Charleston, Illinois won't soon forget.
Head: "Wish I could have been there buddy. As usual we have Coach Jon McGurk on the phone. Coach, tell us a little about what went on last night.
Coach McGurk: "Well, Head, I gotta say it was just a crazy, crazy game last night. I couldn't be more proud of my guys for winning that game and in such spectacular fashion.
Ted: "It was spectacular all right. As a team you shot 52% from the field, and committed only 7 turnovers. And then, of course, you have Romain Martin coming off the bench to totally take over the game, receiving Player of the Game honors.
Coach McGurk: "Yeah he really made the game his own. I figured it might turn into something special once I saw he had 20 points by halftime. So I just kept him out there and he kept hitting his shots."
Ted: "It really should be said that before Romain really hit his stride, the team was in a 34-33 dogfight. Could you have pulled off the win without the help from the freshman?"
Coach McGurk: "I don't know. UCR has two talented shooting guards that lit us up in their own right. I think they combined for about 40 of the team's 75 points, so there's no telling what would have happened. Not switching from 3-2 Zone really didn't help their cause, I suppose. Romain had free reign at the top of the key all night, shooting over their smaller point guard, and he took advatage of that every time."
Head: "Coach, you think his game high is going to hold up for the rest of the NCAA season?"
Coach McGurk: "Well, for his sake, I hope so. It's always nice for a guy that works hard like that to have that bragging right. I just hope he keeps the confidence up that he showed us throughout the game."
Ted: "Alright, thanks Coach and good luck tomorrow when you take on Iowa St. of the Big 12 conference. You're going to need it!"

Author's Note: I have been playing college basketball video games since the SNES days and I have never seen anything like what I saw. The most surreal/awesome game I've ever played/coached.

Ted: "Head, we've got ourselves a team!"
Head: "You got that right, Ted. I'm just gonna keep riding this high."
Ted: Folks, the day after Romain Martin scores an NCAA season high 48 points in a victory against UC Riverside, he comes off the bench again and drops 22 more to help the Panthers defeat the heavily favored Iowa State Cyclones. On the phone we have the coach. Coach, you gotta be feeling pretty good right now."
Coach McGurk: "I am feeling great, but all we really did was follow a game plan and not stray from it, no matter how hard we thought they would come at us. We just stuck in that 2-3 Zone the entire time. It was our toughest test this year. Every time we thought we had them down they'd hit a three, press us, and get right back in it."
Head: "Coach it looks like your guys just exude confidence out on the court and it seems that such a high level of confidence has demoralized your opponents. How important has that been in your success so far?"
Coach McGurk: "It has been extremely important. It usually starts with Romain out on the floor, who is confidence personified, and it just bleeds into the other guys on the court. It just seems like we can't miss out there when we get on those rolls.
Ted: "Will Romain start any time soon? Or do you like his energy coming off the bench?"
Coach McGurk: "Romain Martin will start at shooting guard against Depaul and Catchings will move down to the small forward spot."
Ted: "Alright Coach, thanks a lot! Some breaking news here on 670 the DUNK. Romain Martin to start against DePaul. We'll be back in a few."

              YOU'RE WATCHING....SPORTSCENTER
              *de neh neh-de neh neh*

Stuart Scott: Alright, welcome back. We've got a developing story here out of small Eastern Illinois University. He gets his first Division One win in his first Division One game on Friday. His scrappy 6th man comes off the bench and drops 48 on UC Riverside on Saturday, and chops down a Big 12 tree on Sunday. Now a week later he's got another win against another big school in the DePaul Blue Demons. He is none other than rookie coach Jon McGurk of the EIU Panthers, and he is lighting a fire out there in the OVC! Let's take a look at the DePaul game. Linda?

Linda Cohn: Alright Stu, it's slow going in the first minutes of the game, so Coach McGurk subs in a guy who was supposed to start the game, Romain Martin. And the previous magic is....not working. Martin misses his first three shots of the game and is sent right back to the bench.

Linda Cohn: DePaul ties it 26-26 with 4 minutes to go in the half on a Draelon Burns three. Thirty seconds later, the score still tied and Freshman Ousmane Cisse SWATS that ball away. The Panthers led 33-28 at the half.

Linda Cohn: A big part of the reason they're down? DePaul is 3-15 from three point land. Ousmane led the way at half with 11 points and already 8 boards. Stu?

Stuart Scott: Alright! The Blue Demons start the second half off on a 9-2 run to tie it at 37 and works their way to the lead with 12 minutes to go in the game, for the first time since the opening tip. Here we see Karon Clark hit a WIDE open three. The Panthers counter with a 10-3 run led by Junior Bobby Catchings, who had a heck of a game, to go up 60-56.

Stuart Scott: Fast forward to three minutes left, DePaul up by three. Julio Anthony subs into the game and hits a HUGE three from the right corner 15 seconds later to tie it at 72. It's crunch time now. With 40 seconds to go in the game and the Panthers holding a slight 76-74 lead, Romain Martin shoots from the top of the key. It's no good! But unsung hero Freshman Bobby Jolliff gets the board and the put-back to go up by four, and it was all fouls and free throws from there. Bobby Catchings lead the way with 23 points for the Panthers. Great win by the rookie coach. He has a nice 9 man rotation going and they're really playing with a lot of confidence....

Re: The Coaching Career of Jon McGurk(CH2K7-360)

I hate to break the fourth wall, but I've decided to change the format of my updates from now on. All those stats are nice and all, but typing them all out is mentally draining, even with a template, and it slows me way down as far as updates go. My original goal was to focus more on the coach and his ordeal instead of focusing 100% on the players, so I've decided to come to a compromise. The updates are going to look more like the Last Game's Box Score in the VIP Viewer, but if a player does well or if there is any drama I'll be sure and give the heads up. Also, as long as I'm breaking character, I don't know if it's clear or not but I am coaching all the games, not playing them. 20 Minute halves with 3pt tendency at 35, all fouls at 60, and drive tendency at 60. All the rest defaults. I have a question in the coach mode thread and I would appreciate any comments you might have.

                  Coach's Notes
                  • 14-5 run to close out 1st half. Never looked back. 3-2 defense used exclusively in 2nd half. UWGB didn't know how to handle it, fell apart. Reserves played most of 2nd half. Game was over with 15 minutes left.
                  • Mike Robinson is my Player of the Game. 4/4 3PFG. All in 1 on 1 situations after making defender look silly. Breakout game. 16 pts.
                  • Losing his starting job really lit a fire under Billy Parrish: 6 asts, 4 stls
                  • Willhite is having confidence problems. Seems to be okay now after extended minutes today.

I like the idea of making the report similar to the VIP's last game boxscore. I definitely agree that it is a bit aggravating typing up all the stats after each game. I think that may, subconsciously, be why I seem to have slowed down because I hate typing all of the stuff out.

                    -EDIT-
Thanks for the idea. I just set up my template so game reporting won't be so tedious to me now.

                        • Me and my big mouth.
                        • Jolliff hurt. Ousmane 5 fouls in 3 minutes. No wonder we lost. At least it was a non-conference game.
                        • Romain 4/12 fg. Lost a lot of confidence. Need to build it back up.

                          Coach's Notes
                          • Catchings is out with a hamstring pull. Day to day. Did solid otherwise.
                          • Held Rivers scoreless the last 6:44 of the game.
                          • Jolliff's injury is doing much better, and Brock did a nice job filling in for him tonight.
                          • Ousmane Cisse is both the game's and the coach's Game Changing Performer. Gumbel points out the run starting hook shot with 1:15 to go in the game. I point out the game saving block against McKenzie with 1.5 seconds to go.
                          • Our defensive swagger is coming back.

coach_mcgurk, you are my inspiration. i've been trying to figure this thing out for a while and i love the concept of focusing on the coach and what he's thinking since we are playing coach mode. keep it up. there may be changes occuring in my legacy as well. i've already adopted the vip box score.

Thanks! I actually like the more condensed look of your layout better. I might make one or two more changes to my format to make it a little easier to follow, but other than that I'm starting to like the way my posts are turning out.
