1902 - NL Year In Review

Another year at war with the American League has resulted in battle fatigue setting in on the Executive Committee of the NL along with it's member clubs. The league did chalk up it's greatest triumph in the purchasing of the Baltimore franchise in the rival league and releasing it's major players to sign with NL clubs. The New York Giants, using the help from incoming players John McGraw, Joe McGinnity and Roger Bresnahan, got on a major push near the end of the season and won the NL title with an 89-51 record, beating the Superbas by eight games. The Giant's Christy Mathewson dominated in his second season as he led the lead in wins (33), ERA (2.08) and strikeouts (227) and won the first triple crown for pitchers.

Brooklyn finished second thanks to the hitting of Willie Keeler, who led the NL in RBIs, and the pitching of Wild Bill Donovan.

The Phillies were raided again by the AL clubs as the team lost Ed Delahanty, Red Donahue and Al Orth. Although they were raided for the second time in two seasons, the Phillies played well enough to finish third, twelve games behind the front running Giants.

St.Louis, which suffered a major blow when it lost several players in the raid by the AL franchise in the city, finished the season in dead last, 51 games behind as the Cardinals went from first to worst in the NL.

          Raid!

Clubs from the American League have once again raided clubs from the rival National League.

Willie Keeler and Jesse Tannehill have left Brooklyn and Pittsburgh, respectively, to join the New York Highlanders.

Wild Bill Donovan of the Brooklyn Superbas and both Sam Crawford and Frank Kitson of the Cincinnati Reds have both left their clubs to join the Detroit Tigers.

An emergency meeting of the Executive Committee of the National League has been called!

            Peace At Last!

The three-man Executive Committee of the National League met and then sent a proposal to American League President Ban Johnson to ask the AL to merge with the NL. Ban Johnson said no.

Peace talks continued and a new National Agreement has been reached, ending the war between the American League and the National League.

Both leagues will be recognized as equals and both leagues will honor the other's contracts. There will be no more raids by American League clubs. The players that had already jumped to the American League from the National League can stay with their new clubs.

The National League has allowed the American League club in New York to stay with the provision that the AL will not put a franchise in Pittsburgh. AL President Ban Johnson has okayed this provision. The New York and Brooklyn clubs in the NL disaproved but a consensus was reluctantly reached.

            The AL/NL War Is Over!!!

I know that the years are flying by but I've already have gone through the 1905 season and have posted it at the maddenmania site.

1903 - MLB Year In Review

Well folks, the raidings have stopped and peace is at hand under the new National Agreement between the two, now equal, leagues. The players and managers can now concentrate on the field and the owners can start concetrating where it matters most to them, the turnstiles.

The Philadelphia Phillies held a 2-game lead heading into September and it stayed that way as they headed into the final ten games of the season. It took them awhile but on the last day of the season, they clinched the NL title, staving off the threats of Chicago and New York. Chicago finished second, three games back, thanks to the free agent aquisition of Honus Wagner plus the hitting of Danny Green and Harry Lumley. New York finished third, four games back, with the hitting of Roger Bresnahan leading the way. St.Louis bounced back strong enough to finish in sixth, but bettered last season's performance by 28 games, finishing 65-75, thanks to the hitting of Chick Stahl and the pitching by rookie sensation Ed Walsh.

In the American League, Cleveland and Detroit were in a dogfight that even had to go to an extra game. On September 1st, Cleveland held a 2-game lead over the Tigers but by the 130th game, Detroit came back and was leading by one game. Cleveland took back the lead five games later but on the last day of the season Cleveland lost their game and Detroit won their's to end up in a tie. A one-game playoff was held and was won by Detroit behind the pitching of Bill Bernhard, who won his 25th game to lead both leagues.

With ten games to go, both Cleveland and Detroit had a gentleman's agreement with the Phillies for the winners of each league to face each other in a best-of-nine series. This agreement sets up the first World Series and the first inter-league championship series since the 1890 matchup between the National League and the American Association champs.

A large crowd assembled in Detroit to watch the first game of the series, won by Philadelphia by a score of 4-1 behind the pitching of Stan Yerkes. Doc White pitched a four-hitter in leading the Phillies to a 7-1 victory in game two. The series shifted to Philadelphia for games 3-5 but it was more of the same. Bernhard pitched the Tigers to victory in game four, following Philadelphia's 4-3 win in game three, but Yerkes came back and pitched another 4-hitter in leading the Phillies to a 3-2 win and a 4-1 advantage. Doc White scattered 12 hits as Philadelphia went on to a 4-3 victory in game six and won the first World Series, five games to one.

1904 - AL Year In Review

Another year, another tight race. The Detroit Tigers and the New York Highlanders were in a dogfight as the Highlanders had a 2 and a half-game lead over the Tigers when September rolled around. With ten games remaining, Detroit took a half-game lead and on the last day of the season, they clinched the AL title. Detroit was lead once again by the pitching of Bill Bernhard, who was a co-leader of the major leagues with 25 wins. New York finished 2 games back and were lead by the league's outstanding batter award winner, Mike Donlin, and the pitching of George Winter, whom they got in a trade with the Boston Pilgrims and also had 25 wins. The Philadelphia Athletics finished a distant third, eight games back, and were lead by the arms of Rube Waddell and Eddie Plank.

The American and National Leagues coexisted without incident in 1904 in the fall it was a different matter. Near the end of the season, owners from both the Highlanders and the Tigers offered to play the NL title winner, the New York Giants, in the postseason to decide the world's champion. Giants' president John T. Brush refused the offer stating that because the Phillies easily handled Detroit last fall, the American League was an inferior and minor league. Despite the heavy criticism, Brush stood his ground so there was no World Series played.

1904 - NL Year In Review

After their team won the NL title in 1902, Giants fans were hungry for another title and they received it in 1904. The combination of hitters Cy Seymour and Charley Hickman plus the pitching of Christy Matthewson lead the Giants to the title as they finished six games ahead of the Chicago Cubs. Mathewson finished second in the league with 24 wins and a 1.51 era, and finished first in strikeouts with 228. The Cubs were lead by the hitting of star Honus Wagner. The Pittsburgh Pirates finished in the first division for the first time since 1901 and was a very distant 17 games behind the title winning Giants.

The cheers of Giants fans turned sour as New York's president, John T. Brush, refused to play the title winner from the American League, stating that the league was inferior and not good enough to play the National League's title winner for a championship. Actually, Brush was still mad that the American League got the okay to keep their franchise, the Highlanders, in New York to compete with the Giants.
