Thanks for the readership and the reply. They are both greatly appreciated.

Notice how we are not seeing much of either Ty Cobb or Honus Wagner, two players who dominated at the plate during this time.

Through the first six seasons, Ty Cobb is batting .290.

Ever since he was signed by the Cubs as a free agent, Honus Wagner has been basically struggling with inconsistancy. He hasn't batted over .315 in any year since the move except for 1908, when he was hitting .358 but only played 38 games because of an injury. Every other year he is batting below .300.

You know what, I didn't even think of that. That's pretty amazing. Are injuries part of the "problem" (not that it's a problem)?

Yes, in Ty Cobb's case. The injury setting is "average" and I guess that Cobb has been getting hurt pretty often. Wagner has been more durable.

Ty Cobb only played in 74 games in 1907, 82 games in 1909 and 107 games in the just completed 1910 season. In those 107 games, though, he hit a ton and qualified for the batting title!

Honus Wagner only had 1 season recently with injuries, just 1908. Wagner batted just .259 in 149 games in 1909. He did bounce back and batted over .300 in 1910.

1910 - MLB Year In Review

U.S. President William H. Taft opened the 1910 baseball season by throwing out the first pitch. His actions served to mark baseball as the "official" national pastime. Washington's Jim St.Vrain pitched a great game spreading out eight hits and recording the victory. Unfortunately, this was not an omen of prosperity as the Senators ended up finishing 6th with a 71-83 record.
The Chicago White Sox played winning ball all season long and was in front by 13.5 games heading into September and never looked back, finishing 19 games ahead of the second place Boston Red Sox. Chicago possessed a lineup which included Harry Hooper, Frank Baker and Ty Cobb. Fighting injuries, Ty Cobb ended up playing 107 games and batted .385, winning not only his first batting title, but also the Outstanding Batter award as he also led the league in runs scored and stolen bases. On the mound, Hooks Wiltse lead the AL in wins with 25 and Orval Overall chipped in with 24 wins and recorded 185 strikeouts.
As the National League headed into September, the New York Giants held a 4 game lead over the Chicago Cubs and 6 games over the Philadelphia Phillies. The Phillies ended up fading away but the Cubs got hot and with ten games remaining on the schedule took the lead by three games and clinched the team's fifth straight NL title with three games to go. Chicago was once again led on the mound by Three Finger Brown and had a hitting attack that was led by Fred Snodgrass and Honus Wagner, who led the NL in runs batted in. The Giants collapsed in the middle of September after star pitcher Christy Mathewson suffered an injury.
The World Series, the second time that two teams from the same city were playing in, was hyped up to be a showdown between hitters Ty Cobb and Honus Wagner. Both players didn't disappoint the fans as Ty Cobb finished the series batting .450 with two homers and Honus Wagner batted .389 and drove in six runs. The White Sox took the first three games of the series before taking the series with their extra inning win in game five.
During the season both leagues introduced a new "jack-rabbit" ball. Although it boosted runs and home run production a little, it could be a sign of things to come as the leagues entered their second decade together as major leagues.

I guess the new ball and the new ballpark did him some good. Now if he can only start avoiding injuries and play more than 100 games in a season.

BTW, the winner of the NL's outstanding batter award isn't a slouch either, "Shoeless" Joe Jackson. (Since in the real hall of fame we have alcoholics ("Pete" Alexander & Hack Wilson, among others), womanizers (Wade Boggs), cheaters (Gaylord Perry) and a player known to throw games every now and then (Tris Speaker), Shoeless Joe Jackson & Pete Rose should have the bans removed and allowed to be elected to Cooperstown). What's your thoughts on them?

Shoeless Joe is a no-brainer HOF'er. From the reading I've done on him, he was pretty much a victim in that whole scandal. His stats for the series don't lie. Rose is tougher. I think in light of everything else that plagues baseball (steriods), his gambling as a manager doesn't look like it impacted the games too much. If he handled himself better, he would've been in already. Personally, I would let him in.

The great Ted Williams tried mightily to get the ban removed from Shoeless Joe and get him into the Hall.

Rose, based on the way he played the game and the way he conducted himself in his egotistical way, reminds me of someone who played many years before him and had the same number of letters in his last name, COBB. The only difference is that "Charlie Hustle" was not as fast as "The Georgia Peach".
