1913 - MLB Year In Review

It looked like it was the Boston Red Sox year as the jumped in front but they ended up in a tight four team race with Washington, Chicago and Cleveland all within a couple of games all season long. In August the Red Sox suffered a serious blow as their star outfielder Tris Speaker suffered a major torn ankle ligament injury that has ended his career. Boston, however, continued to hang onto first place and was leading the AL by 3 games over the White Sox and 7.5 games over the Senators as the schedule headed into September. With about a week and a half to go Chicago pulled into a tie with Boston then took the lead with only 5 games remaining. The White Sox hung on and clinched the AL title on the last day of the season by winning their last game while the Red Sox had completed their schedule the day before and sat 1/2 game behind. Chicago had a great lineup led by the trio of Frank Baker, Zach Wheat and the oft-injured Ty Cobb. On the mound both Ed Lafitte and George McQuillan each had 23 wins to pace the team and the league.
The NL title race was not as close as the Chicago Cubs continued their strangle hold on the rest of the league. Chicago headed into September 7 1/2 games ahead of St.Louis and 8 1/2 games over New York. Both St.Louis and New York fell out of contention but the red-hot Philadelphia Phillies came on only to finish in second place, 6 games behind the Cubs. St.Louis collapsed after a torn ankle ligament injury to Shoeless Joe Jackson that will also sideline him for almost all of the 1914 season.
During the World Series it looked like the White Sox would run away as they took the first three games behind the solid pitching of Noodles Hahn, Ed Lafitte and Ed Walsh, who they acquired in a trade with the St.Louis Cardinals in July at the trade deadline. The Cubs fought back and won the next two games before the White Sox won the world's championship in game six as Ty Cobb hit a home run and Ed Lafitte won his second game of the series.

                  1914 - MLB In Review

Europe had broken out into a war this summer as the leagues had started their pennant races. Rookie sensation George Sisler was leading the way offensively for the Phillies as they started on a roll. Philadelphia was leading then second place Cincinnati by 6 games before they got a big boost on the mound as they acquired Christy Mathewson from the Giants. The Phillies kept on rolling and by the time September rolled around, Philadelphia was up by 8 games over New York and 10.5 games over Cincinnati. The Phillies stayed hot and clinched the title with about two weeks to go. Defending NL champion Chicago got red hot during September and finished in second place, 14 games behind, as Vic Saier tried to power the Cubs towards the top despite losing Honus Wagner. The Boston franchise, cellar dwellers for most of their seasons since 1901, came on strong and finished in fourth place, 17 games behind the front running Phillies, and unveiled their newest first round pick, Rogers Hornsby. Hornsby, like most rookie hitters, struggled during his first season and finished batting .235 before an injury ended his season in August.
The Chicago White Sox started their quest for another AL title behind the hot bats of Claude Cooper, Bill "Duke" Kenworthy and Ty Cobb. Ty Cobb finally had an almost injury free season as he played in 145 games, batting .382 and driving in 100 runs as he won the Outstanding Batter Award. Rookie hurler Raleigh Aitchison threw a no-hitter and finished the season third in the league in wins with 22, and led the way on the mound for the pale hose as he won the AL's Rookie of the Year award. Chicago had the lead by 5 games over Philadelphia and 8.5 games over St.Louis heading into September and never looked back, eventually winning by 6 games over the Athletics.
The World Series proceeded to be a ho-hum affair as the powerful White Sox lineup, plus their terrific pitching, took command as Chicago swept Philadelphia in four straight games and won the world's championship.

1915 - MLB Year In Review

The Chicago White Sox proved that they were still the dominant team in the American League as they gained control of first place in June and never looked back. Going into September, Chicago was leading by 8.5 games over the Washington Senators and continued their roll, eventually winning the AL title by 11 games over the Senators. Ty Cobb led the way on offense as he hit at a .358 clip until leaving with an injury in late August. The pale hose, however, had a terrific pitching staff that was led by 26-game winner Ray Fisher and 22-game winner Fred Toney, who also threw a no-hitter during the year. Washington was led by Marty Berghammer, who won the AL batting title with a .360 average, and by Eddie Cicotte, who won 23 games. New York finished in third place, 17 games behind, thanks to the continued power hitting of Ed Lennox. The Boston Red Sox finished in fourth, 27 games behind and finally brought up one of their top prospects, Babe Ruth, in September. Ruth pitched in 5 games and had a 1-3 record.
The National League race was pretty much like the AL's race was. Heading into September, the defending title holders, the Philadelphia Phillies, rolled over the rest of the league. At the start of September, the Phillies led by 10.5 games over both the Cincinnati Reds and the New York Giants. The Giants faded and the Phillies won the title going away, winning by 14 games over the Reds and 15 games over the Chicago Cubs. Pitchers Joe Benz and Christy Mathewson led the way for Philadelphia as Benz won 20 games and Matty won 18. At the plate, Guy Zinn was the leading hitter, batting .303 and had 9 homers. Benny Kauff and Lee Magee led Cincinnati to the second place finish as Kauff drove in a league-leading 87 runs and Magee was named the NL Outstanding batter, batting .312 with 5 homers and 68 rbi. The Chicago Cubs acquired pitcher Rube Marquard from the Braves and he led the team with 21 wins. Three Finger Brown continued to contribute on the mound as he won 15 games and finished third in the league in ERA with 1.86.
The World Series looked like a runaway as Philadelphia won the first two games but the White Sox battled back to tie the series at 2-2. The Phillies won a hard fought 12-inning game in game #5 then held on in game six, winning 5-4 and the world's championship, avenging their World Series loss in 1914.
