    A History of Major League Baseball (1901-????) - a "what if" scenario - ootp7

Has anyone thought of rewriting history?

Has anyone thought about how major league baseball might have ended up if they used today's financial system back when the American League came onto the scene in 1901?

Let's have a little fun and travel back in time and see what might have or could have been.

    I hope you enjoy this.

    In the beginning:

The story behind the what if scenario:

"After a bitter contract dispute with Giants' owner Andrew Freedman, Rusie responded by publicly thumbing his nose at Mr. Freeman, which was the 19th century variant of the middle finger. He was fined $200 (he made only $2,500). Rusie refused to play until Freedman returned his money and ended up holding out for the entire 1896 season. It was a fiasco for baseball; fans boycotted and the press railed against the owners. Owners implored Rusie and Freedman to compromise; neither would budge. The holdout was finally settled just prior to the 1897 season, as the owners collaborated for recoupment of the garnished wages, as well as a $5,000 settlement. This was partially out of respect for Mr. Rusie. However, the primary motivator was the threat of legal action against the reserve clause had his case gone to court."****

    (****NOTE: Taken from Wikipedia.com)

What if the trial went to court and the reserve clause was abolished had Amos Rusie's case had gone to trial and he won his case against the Andrew Freedman???

That is the scenario for this walk, or run, through baseball history.

The year is 1901 and a new era in baseball has begun. Free agency is among us as the reserve clause was abolished thanks to the court case won by Amos Rusie against New York Giants' owner Andrew Freedman and the rest of the National League.

                A New League is Formed!

In 1901, Ban Johnson, with the consent of the team owners, withdrew from the National Agreement and announced plans to operate independently as a second major league. The National League owners welcomed their rivals, the American League, with disdain and fear. These elements give the underdog the chance to survive. Here are the list of the teams:

                Baltimore Orioles
                Boston Americans
                Chicago White Stockings
                Cleveland Blues
                Detroit Tigers
                Milwaukee Brewers
                Philadelphia Athletics
                Washington Senators

1901 - AL Year In Review

When the American League opened it's first season, each team found itself loaded with talent from the NL. Probably the brightest star the first year was Nap Lajoie, second baseman for the Philadelphia Athletics, who won the AL batting title after jumping from the rival Phillies. In addition to hitting .401, Lajoie also drove in 109 runs, taking two of the three triple crown catagories in hitting. Connie Mack managed his first Athletics' squad that also previewed one of his most prominent collegiate finds, 25-year old pitcher Eddie Plank, who won 32 games to lead the league. Jimmy Collins jumped from the Boston NL club to manage and star for the new AL team in Boston. His team also featured one of the best pitchers to jump to the junior league, Cy Young, who finished second with 26 wins and second in strikeouts with 184.

The Americans took the first American League title by three games over the Athletics, who suffered a collapse in the early weeks of September then couldn't make it up at the end.

1901 - NL Year In Review

While the upstart American League was holding it's first major league schedule, the National League was staging it's 25th season. Since it's founding in 1876, the league had survive rules changes, shifting franchises and competition from three rival leagues, establishing the National League as the powerhouse in the young field of professional baseball. In 1892 the league expanded from eight teams to twelve, some teams, like the ones in Louisville and Washington, spent almost a decade away from the first division. Late in the 1890's Baltimore and Brooklyn came under common management, as did Cleveland with St.Louis and Pittsburgh with Louisville. These didn't lead to fixing of games, but it did lead to all of the better players being on one club, leaving the other team much weaker. In response to this, the league decided to cut down back to eight teams, dropping Baltimore, Louisville, Washington and Cleveland. This left the loop in New York, Brooklyn, St.Louis, Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago, Cincinnati and Pittsburgh.

The emergence on the scene of the American League not only created a second major league, it also provided an escape valve for the players. The players embraced the bidding war that developed and about thirty regulars from 1900 jumped to the new league, including stars Nap Lajoie, John McGraw, Joe McGinnity, Clark Griffith and Cy Young. The AL occupies three of the abandoned NL cities and new teams were placed in direct competition in Boston, Chicago and Philadelphia.

On the field, the East Coast teams were more hurt by the AL raids then the Western teams. St.Louis grabbed the lead in late August, then led by as many as six games before winning the NL title with three games to go. The Cardinals were lead on offense by hitters Eric "Snags" Heidrick and Dan McGann. The team was led on the mound by Mike O'Neill, who won 30 games and had a NL leading 2.27 ERA. Philadelphia's Ed Delahanty led the league in average, batting .366, and runs batted in with 108, while Sam Crawford from Cincinnati led the league in homers with 11.

While Philadelphia boasted the arm of Doc White, the league's winningest pitcher, New York showed off the arm of rookie sensation Christy Mathewson, a 22-game winner in his first season.

Thanks again for reading some of my gunk. It is really appreciated. I have been following your college football journal but I haven't yet posted in it. It looks really good.

It's amazing at some of the things that have popped up so far. I am already through the 1905 season.

1902 - AL Year In Review

Halfway through it's second season, the American League found it's Baltimore franchise in the hands of the enemy, making the completion of the leagues schedule a little muddy. Baltimore manager John McGraw kept finding his way into AL President Ban Johnson's doghouse. Johnson kept getting on "Mugsy" for harassing the umpires that finally McGraw had enough and opened negotiations with John T. Brush, the chairman leading the three-manned counsil of the NL. In the middle of July, the purchase was finally made and Brush released John McGraw, Joe McGinnity, Roger Bresnahan and Cy Seymour from their contracts so that they could sign with NL clubs. Baltimore at the time was 41-35, 9 games behind, in third place. After a couple of days, AL President Ban Johnson found a loophole in the leagues bylaws and revoked the franchise. He decided that the league would run the team the rest of the way on AL funds. The Orioles finished in a tie for fifth place with a 67-73 record.

Ban Johnson had other problems besides McGraw in 1902. The Philadelphia Supreme Court, after being pushed by the NL's Phillies, tried to use it's state law to get the players back that were raided from the NL club. Johnson said no and pointed out the Rusie vs. NL case that disolved the reserve clause.

Milwaukee finished it's move to St.Louis and quickly raided the NL's Cardinals. The Browns signed Jesse Burkett, Bobby Wallace, D!ck Padden, Snags Heidrick, Jack Harper and Jack Powell. The Browns used the new players to finish in second place, only four games from the AL title winning Washington Senators. Along with those players, several players continued to be lured by the higher salaries and jumped from the NL to the AL. Two of the NL stars that crossed over were outfielder Ed Delahanty and pitcher Red Donahue. Connie Mack's Philadelphia Athletics raided the NL's Pittsburgh Pirates and lured pitcher Rube Waddell to join their club.
