1908 - MLB Year In Review
The American League title race was pretty much decided by the time September came rolling around. The New York Highlanders, winners of the last two seasons, made it three in a row as they totally dominated the league, winning a record 101 games. The Highlanders were ahead of the then second place Washington Senators by 13 games and continued to cruise to the title, finishing 16 games ahead of the Chicago White Sox. New York was led at the plate by Mike Donlin and Sherry Magee and on the mound by Addie Joss and George Winter. The White Sox finished second behind the hitting of Ty Cobb and rookie Frank Baker.
It was the same story in the National League as well as the Chicago Cubs rolled to their third straight NL title by finishing 14 games ahead of the second place Pittsburgh Pirates. The Cubs were once again led by their pitching corps with Mordecai "Three Finger" Brown leading the way, as he led the league in wins (24) and earned run average (1.32). The Pirates finished second thanks to the power hitting of Tim Jordan, who led the majors in home runs with 14, a new National League record.
The World Series proved to be ho-hum as well as the favored Highlanders disappointed no one in defeating the Cubs in five games. George Winter led the way with two wins, with Bernhard and Joss winning one game each.

Re: Current Hall of Fame
1909 has been completed through the regular season and will be updated sometime Thursday night. Only a few more years to go before you-know-who enters the league as a pitcher. Then we'll see if/when his team turns him into an outfielder. Who know's, maybe he will end up staying a pitcher. If you can read this, thank a teacher. Yes. These are all real players who have played in the majors from 1901 thru whatever. I am using the Sean Lahman's database.
BTW folks, the "George" being talked about is George Herman Ruth. He should be in the first-year draft in either 1912 or 1913.Last edited by doncoryell; 08-24-2007, 02:37 AM.If you can read this, thank a teacher. If you can read this in english, thank a soldier.Comment

1909 - MLB Year In Review
After winning three straight National League pennants, the Chicago Cubs entered the season confident of an unprecedented fourth consecutive title. Who could blame them with the bats of Eddie Collins and Honus Wagner plus the rotation of Three Finger Brown, Tom Hughes, Bill Wicker and Vic Willis. By the time the season got anywhere near September, the race was all but over as they ended up winning by 17 games over the second place Cincinnati Reds. The only surprise was Vic Campbell. All he did was bat .310 with a league-leading 6 home runs and 78 runs batted in, gaining him the NL Outstanding Batter award.
As the pennant streak continued in the National League, it did not happen in the American League. New York, winners of four straight titles themselves, could not make it five in a row. The Highlanders started out slow and could never catch up, dropping all the way to sixth place. The Boston Red Sox, riding the bat of Tris Speaker, held a four game lead over Chicago and six games over both St.Louis and Washington. All Tris Speaker did was lead the league in average (.320), home runs (8) and runs batted in (94) as he became the second player in history to win the triple crown. Not only that, but he also led the league in runs scored with 99 and was second in stolen bases with 49. The White Sox tried to keep pace during September but had to settle for second place, four games behind the pennant winning Red Sox.
In the World Series, the Chicago Cubs won it for the second time in three years by totally dominating Boston and swept the series, 4 games to 0. The cubbies outscored the bosox 22-11, including just allowing 1 run, total, in the last two games behind the stellar pitching of Brown and Hughes.
Institutions came and went for the national pastime in 1909. Harry C. Pullman's six-year reign as NL President came to an end after suffering a nervous breakdown. On the lighter side, Forbes Field in Pittsburgh and Shibe Park in Philadelphia opened their doors for the first time during the season and crowds came pouring in to take a look at the brand new ballparks. Maybe the change in ballparks will spark some change in the struggling franchises on the field as the Pirates and the Athletics, respectively, both finished far behind in their respective leagues.
