      2007 Oregon Ducks
Bellotti believes senior leadership can help these Ducks fly to new heights

EUGENE, OR - 2006 started out brightly for the Ducks, but ended just as dark. A 7-2 start spiraled into a 7-6 finished, lowlighted by 3 blowout losses and the benching of quarterback Dennis Dixon, who turned into a turnover machine.

So what makes Oregon head coach Mike Bellotti believe this year will be different?

"Maturity," Bellotti said at Pac-10 Media Day. "Dennis Dixon as a senior is infinitely more mature than he was as a junior. He's an explosive player, and a dynamic playmaker on the field, and the mental part of the game is starting to take hold. If it does, the sky is the limit for him, and this team as a whole."

The Pac-10 has been USC's personal playground for the past five years, and they will enter 2007 as the overwhelming favorite to repeat as Pac-10 Champions and contend for another national title. The list of those who can challenge the Trojans for the throne is headlined not by Oregon, but by California. The Golden Bears technically shared the Pac-10 title with SC last season, but their loss to the Trojans kept them out of Pasadena. They are the consensus #2 in the preseason Pac-10 rankings.

But while everyone fawns over USC and California, the Oregon Ducks have assembled an underrated team of skilled players, particularly on offense. The 2007 Ducks appear to fit the mold of the stereotypical Pac-10 team: All kinds of offense, not much defense. The 4-2-5 scheme the Ducks run on defense emphasizes their pass defense, which led the Pac-10 a year ago. But it also weakens their defense against the run. On offense though, the Ducks may not have a peer in the conference. If Dennis Dixon can reduce the turnovers, his playmaking ability, combined with the embarassment of riches he is surrounded by, could put the Ducks over the top in the competitive Pac-10.

        Analysis

Dixon had a bad 12-14 touchdown to interception ratio in 2006, and that must be improved dramatically for the Ducks' offense to click. If it does improve, not only will the Ducks click, they might just explode. Dixon is a supreme talent, both running and passing, ideally suited to run the spread option of new offensive coordinator Chip Kelly. Efficiency in the passing game will open up the ground attack for Dixon and his running backs. Jonathan Stewart is perhaps the Pac-10's best rusher now, with Cal's Marshawn Lynch in the pros. Stewart ran for 981 yards and 10 touchdowns as a sophomore last year, while partially splitting duty with Jeremiah Johnson. Johnson (644 yards, 10 TDs in '06) is a fellow junior, and will see significant carries as well, keeping Stewart fresh. If the Ducks were solely based on running the ball, Dixon, Stewart and Johnson could each go for 1000 yards, but there are huge weapons on the outside as well. Jaison Williams has tight end size - 6'5, 240 - but wideout speed. Cameron Colvin has underachieved in his career so far at UO, but had an outstanding spring. Brian Paysinger is technically the slot receiver, but it wouldn't be surprising in the least to see him as the #1 receiver in the stats.

Of course, the foundation for any great offense is a great offensive line, and Oregon has the Pac-10's best. The best individual lineman - Sam Baker - plays for Southern California, but the best unit as a whole resides in Eugene. Seniors Geoff Schwartz and Josh Tschirgi are mentioned in Preseason All-Pac-10 teams, and big things are expected from Center Max Unger. As a group, the Ducks' offensive line is massive, and expects to create huge running lanes for Stewart and Johnson.

            Analysis

The Ducks' front four will be relied on heavily to get pressure on opposing quarterbacks. Jeremy Gibbs is a defensive tackle converted to end, and may at times be shifted inside so Will Tukuafu can get into the game at end. Nick Reed and David Faaeteete have the potential to burst onto the All-Pac-10 team by year's end.

The front four must excel because of the bizarre back seven. Oregon runs, in a sense, a 4-2-5, but both Jerome Boyd and Patrick Chung spend much of their time at the line of scrimmage on the outside. Boyd has the size of an outside linebacker, and Chung occupies the "Rover" position, giving him freedom to make plays. The actual linebackers are John Bacon and defensive captain A.J. Tuitele. Tuitele is on the watch list for many awards. The true secondary players are sophomore corners Walter Thurmond III and Jairus Byrd, along with free safety Matthew Harper. Thurmond and Byrd were both freshman All-Americans a year ago, and Harper is a ballhawk. The pass defense should be solid again, but Boyd and Chung will be called upon in run support often.

                  2007 Pac-10 Preview

                  Projected Order of Finish

                  1. Southern California Trojans
Some things remain unchanged. The Trojans are a landslide favorite to not only win the Pac-10 for the 6th consecutive year, but they're heavily favored to be one of the teams to reach New Orleans to play for the national title game. All the pieces are in place - a senior QB, an enormous well of talent on offense, and a nasty, nasty defense. The only pitfall could be the schedule. The Trojans have to travel to Lincoln, South Bend, Berkeley, Eugene and Tempe. If USC is to conquer the Pac-10, they will certainly earn it.

                  2. California Golden Bears
Last year it seemed like all the pieces were in place for Cal. In a "rebuilding" year for USC, the Bears had oodles of talent on both sides, and still they lost by two touchdowns to the Trojans in Los Angeles. Now, playmakers like Marshawn Lynch and Daymeion Hughes are gone. The cupboard is far from bare, though. DeSean Jackson and Nate Longshore lead a still-electric offense, and with USC coming to Berkeley, anything is possible.

                  3. UCLA Bruins
The Sons of Westwood are riding the high that came from the dramatic 13-9 win over hated rival USC last season. The win probably saved Karl Dorrell's job, but it also upped the ante for 2007. The Bruins won't light up the scoreboard, but their defense is probably second only to SC's in the conference. Safeties Chris Horton and Dennis Keyes are leaders of a smothering secondary, which is a key in the pass-happy Pac-10.

                  4. Oregon State Beavers
It was the Beavers a year ago that showed the rest of the conference that USC was indeed mortal. Now OSU wants to build on a 10-win season. They will rely on a fearsome pass rush and a potentially explosive offense. They must break in a new QB and endure the growing pains that come with that, but Yvenson Bernard and Sammie Stroughter are two of the conference's most electric players, and they will go a long way in leading Mike Riley's team throughout the season.

                  5. Arizona State Sun Devils
Dennis Erickson essentially spit in the face of the University of Idaho, but ASU is the major benefactor. Erickson is a proven winner at the college level, and he takes over a Sun Devils program that has underachieved for a decade. Underachieving, however, means there is talent, and there is indeed a lot of it in the desert. Rudy Carpenter is one of the top QBs in the Pac-10, and he will spend much of the time handing the ball off to Ryan Torain. On defense, ASU is led by OLB Robert James, one of the most underrated players in America.

                  6. Oregon Ducks
Mike Bellotti's team oozes talent, but there are two glaring questions: 1. Can Dennis Dixon stop putting the ball in the hands of the opposing team? and 2. Can the defense stop anybody? These questions will have to be answered quickly if the Ducks are to make a run at the crown. One thing they do have going for them is homefield - they get Cal, USC and Arizona State at the Autzen Zoo.

                  7. Arizona Wildcats
The Mike Stoops era has not been a good one in Tucson. Stoops was expected to revive the "Desert Swarm" days of the early-mid 1990s, but it just hasn't happened. Willie Tuitama and a nice stable of WRs lead the offense, and Antoine Cason and Wilrey Fontenot form perhaps the Pac-10's best CB duo, but the lack of a stable running game or run defense will probably bury UA again - along with Stoops.

                  8. Washington State Cougars
Think they miss Mike Price in Pullman? The Cougars, like their in-state rivals, have hit a very dry patch while USC and Cal suck in all the talent in the west. Wazzu has some nice senior leaders like QB Alex Brink, WR Michael Bumpus and DT Ropati Pitoitua, but in comparison to the haves of the conference, WSU just doesn't measure up. It will probably be another long season in the Palouse.

                  9. Washington Huskies
There once was a time when Washington held the Pac-10 crown. When Don James and Rick Neuheusel ran things, the road to Pasadena often ran through Seattle. Nowadays though, the Huskies have fallen by the wayside, still trying to recover from the Neuheusel fiasco. Ty Willingham is doing his best to build up talent, and now he will hand the keys to the car over to what Husky fans hope is the savior - duel threat redshirt freshman QB Jake Locker.

                  10. Stanford Cardinal
There is talent in Tucson, Pullman and Seattle - those teams are capable of surprising one of the top dogs. Stanford, on the other hand, appears to be the only sure win in the league for the upper echelon. Jim Harbaugh may be the right man for the job - but that job is going to be tedious and lengthy.

                  Preseason All-Pac-10 Team

QB: John David Booty, Southern California
                  RB: Ryan Torain, Arizona State
                  RB: Yvenson Bernard, Oregon State
                  WR: DeSean Jackson, California
                  WR: Jaison Williams, Oregon

Ducks open 2007 with a bang
There are issues to fix, but Oregon impresses in opener

EUGENE, OR - There were some very unsettling things about the season opener for the Oregon Ducks against the Houston Cougars.

QB Dennis Dixon completed only 51% of his passes, thanks in part to 6 drops by his receivers. The Ducks squandered a 17-0 lead, with many defenders getting caught out of position.

In the end though, the Ducks scored the final four touchdowns of the game, including the deciding three in the 4th quarter, beating the Cougars 45-24 in the 2007 opener at Autzen Stadium.

"We're wouldn't be doing our jobs as coaches if we didn't have things to work on. We've got some things that need to be fixed, and not a lot of time to fix them," Head Coach Mike Bellotti told reporters after the game.

The main thing that needs to be fixed is the dropped passes. Jonathan Stewart, Cameron Colvin and Jaison Williams all had one, and the normally sure-handed Brian Paysinger had a whopping three.

The ground game worked though. Jeremiah Johnson led the Ducks with 98 yards on just 8 carries. He scored the game-tying touchdown in the 3rd quarter on a 47 yard scamper. Stewart added 94 yards and a TD, and Dixon had 54.

The Ducks will probably need all their offensive weapons to click, as they head to Ann Arbor next week to face the potent offense of the Michigan Wolverines.

First game not unlike the start the Ducks had this season against Houston. Are you using the default playbook in the game for the Ducks? It sure leaves something to be desired since it's basically the Crowton offense, but I guess that is true with the playbooks in general in the game.

Man, looking at that healthy starting group of receivers is something else. Looking forward to seeing 450+ yards against Michigan.

Yeah, I couldn't find a playbook that was closer to the actual Ducks offense. The default one in the game isn't that bad, though. With package substitutions there are some cool plays, like putting Johnson next to Dixon in the shotgun and motioning Stewart from the slot into the backfield, a triple option of sorts. Pretty neat.
