Stewart carries Ducks in the desert
Star tailback rushes for 200 in 3 quarters

TUCSON, AZ - It says a lot when Dennis Dixon throws for 350 yards and has an off day.

But that's exactly what he had against Arizona. He threw two interceptions, lost a fumble, barely completed over 50% of his passes, and was sacked a season-high five times. Combine that with Jonathan Stewart missing most of the second quarter with a shoulder injury, and the Ducks had a precarious 14-13 halftime lead over the Wildcats.

Stewart returned after halftime though, and although he only had one touchdown on the day, he dominated to the tune of 218 rushing yards, his second straight 200-yard game. That helped the Ducks' offense find their rhythm, and they ran away from Arizona after halftime, winning 49-21.

"Dennis got a little frustrated out there. He wasn't used to all the pressure; our line's done a great job all year, but Arizona got to Dennis a little bit and rattled him," UO coach Mike Bellotti said after the game. Dixon had a season low 4 yards rushing because of the sacks.

The Ducks are now 10-0, and are headed toward a colossal showdown with #2 UCLA in the Rose Bowl next week. The winner will all but be guaranteed a spot in the Bowl Championship Series.

                      Ducks' dynamic duo delivers championship
"Never say die" mentality fuels come back in Pasadena

PASADENA, CA - The Oregon Ducks enjoyed their trip to the Rose Bowl so much, they might schedule a return visit for New Year's Day.

After a placid three quarters, the Ducks had to fight tooth and nail in the final frame, but ultimately prevailed, edging top-ranked UCLA 42-35 at the Rose Bowl to clinch their first Pac-10 Championship since 2001. Because they appear to be on the outside looking in at the BCS National Championship picture, they appear destined for their first Rose Bowl since New Year's Day 1995.

They entered the 4th quarter against #1 UCLA up 20-14, but Chris Markey scored early to put the Bruins ahead by one. The Ducks struck back with a 53 yard scoring strike from Dennis Dixon to Jaison Williams. Dixon ran in the ensuing 2-point try, making it 28-21. UCLA responded in 37 seconds, but the Ducks blocked the extra point, leaving them ahead 28-27 with 4:38 to go. The offense couldn't put UCLA away though, and had to punt. Bruins' CB Alterraun Verner ran the punt back 84 yards for a score, sending the Rose Bowl into delirium with 2:57 left. Chris Markey converted UCLA's 2-point conversion to make it 35-28. The Ducks faced 4th and 2 on their ensuing possession, and Dennis Dixon went to the Pistol formation. Faking the handoff to Jonathan Stewart, Dixon rolled out to his right. UCLA safety Dennis Keyes had blitzed and was cutting off Dixon's running lane to the first down. UO tight end Ed Dickson, though, had come open on a corner route. Dixon hit him in stride for a 63 yard touchdown with 96 seconds remaining. UCLA tried to mount a winning drive, but Ben Olson made a terrible throw off his back foot that went right into the hands of Oregon defensive captain A.J. Tuitele. Dixon and Stewart took it from there, and Stewart scored the winning touchdown with only 10 seconds left.

The Ducks have clinched the Pac-10's automatic BCS berth with an 8-0 conference record, and can win the conference outright with a victory over rival Oregon State in the Civil War, next week at Autzen Stadium. The home team has won the last ten meetings in this rivalry.

                        I knew it.

How the hell does Markey rush 34 times? He suffered 12 injuries after the game most likely.

With those stats at the bottom, I would say McFadden should win the Heisman almost 2300 yards is crazy and at 6.9 yards per carry. Dixon has nice stats, but McFadden deserves to win.

I know. I would tell you better luck next season, but with a QB who looks like he might pull off a Heisman, and not one loss, I'd have a tough time trying to say that with a straight face.

Dixon lays claim to Heisman; Ducks lay claim to New Orleans

PASADENA, CA - Never before has a Pac-10 team celebrated a Rose Bowl berth so sadly.

The Oregon Ducks erased an early 21-0 deficit and scored the game's final three touchdowns to down their archrivals, the Oregon State Beavers, in an offensive classic, 62-41. The Ducks outgained the Beavers in total yardage 726-649.

After it was over, the Ducks celebrated with their fans on the field. Many held roses in their hands or mouths, signifying their Pac-10 Championship and reluctant berth in the Rose Bowl on New Year's Day.

Reluctant because these Ducks believe they deserve better.

"There's nothing to really say about that situation. It's unfortunate, but there's nothing we can do aside from taking care of business each week, and we have. It's not fair that these kids aren't going to get their chance," Oregon Coach Mike Bellotti was visibly upset after the game. For the second time, his Pac-10 Champion Ducks will be left out of the National Championship Game. In 2001 his 10-1 team, led by Joey Harrington, was passed over by a Nebraska team that didn't even play for their conference title and lost their last game 62-36 to Colorado.

That Oregon team won the Fiesta Bowl, 37-14. This Oregon team will have to make a similar statement in Pasadena.
