              Re: Oregon Ducks (NCAA 08)

              Dixon rewarded; Ducks snubbed
Individual awards aplenty, but Ducks will not play for National Championship

EUGENE, OR - The trophy case at the University of Oregon is about to get much, much bigger.

The Ducks' record-setting season has reaped in many awards for their players - just not their team.

First and foremost though, of course, is Dennis Dixon. The senior QB put it all together in 2007, and has been rewarded with college football's ultimate honor - the Heisman Trophy.

In a landslide, Dixon beat out Arkansas RB Darren McFadden for the coveted award. Dixon had 435 first place votes to McFadden's 99, and 1830 overall to McFadden's 766. Louisville's Brian Brohm (667), Boise State's Taylor Tharp (658) and Hawaii's Colt Brennan (432) followed.

"This is just a tremendous honor. I wouldn't have been here without my teammates, my coaches, and my family. To be rewarded for all the hard work I've put in is really special...I just wish our team was being rewarded like our players were," a bittersweet Dixon said in his acceptance speech in New York.

The snubbing the Ducks' team has gone through is nothing short of outrageous. Aside from going 12-0, winning the Pac-10 and scoring 609 points in the process, the Ducks beat the following teams: Conference USA Champion Houston (10-3), #9 Michigan (10-2), Washington (8-4), #7 USC (10-2), #25 Arizona State (9-3), and #10 UCLA (10-2). The collective records of all the teams on the Ducks' schedule is 96-61, a .611 winning percentage. Compare that to the teams ahead of them:

              #1 Auburn (12-1, SEC Champions): Wins over Kansas State (7-5), USF (8-4), #21 Florida (8-4), #2 LSU (10-2), Ole Miss (8-4), #8 Tennessee (11-2); Loss to #19 Arkansas (9-3); opponents' record: 91-66 (.580).

              #2 LSU (10-2): Wins over South Carolina (8-4), #21 Florida (8-4), Ole Miss (8-4), #19 Arkansas (9-3); losses to #14 Virginia Tech (10-2) and #1 Auburn (12-1); opponents' record: 94-63 (.599).

              #3 Louisville (11-1): Wins over #20 Utah (10-2), USF (8-4), Rutgers (7-5); loss to #12 West Virginia (11-1); opponents' record: 82-63 (.573).

#4 Iowa (12-0, Big Ten Champions): Wins over Northern Illinois (8-4), #17 Wisconsin (9-3), Penn State (7-5), Northwestern (7-5), Minnesota (7-5), Western Michigan (7-5); opponents' record: 83-73 (.532).

But instead of the Ducks going to New Orleans, the National Championship game will feature SEC Champion Auburn against Louisville, a team that didn't even win the Big East.

In addition to Dixon winning the Heisman Trophy, he also won the Davey O'Brien Award as the nation's top quarterback. Patrick Chung, Max Unger and Matt Evensen also won awards.
