Defense sparks & Dixon ignites as Ducks steamroll Cougars
    Harper's return, Dixon's 6 touchdowns pace 62-21 rout

EUGENE, OR - The Washington State Cougars were literally inches away from a two touchdown lead on the road in the first quarter against #20 Oregon.

And then #20 for Oregon changed the face of the game.

Free Safety Matthew Harper lunged in front of Alex Brink's pass, and ran 101 yards for a touchdown, tying the game at 7. The Ducks would score the next four touchdowns, and when all was said and done, Dennis Dixon had 5 through the air and one on the ground, and the Pac-10's best offense had a 62-21 victory.

It wasn't all on the offense though. The Ducks - leading the nation in takeaways and turnover margin - intercepted four more passes. That set their offense in a rhythm, and they racked up 513 yards. Not bad, considering they were at -6 (yes, minus six) after the first quarter. Dixon was on the run for much of the game, and couldn't find much room, netting only 29 yards on the ground. So he once again did the damage with his arm, completing 73% of his passes (19-26) for 305 yards and 5 TDs, with only one interception.

The Ducks face an interesting test next week, travelling to Seattle to take on rival Washington. The Huskies have been very schitzophrenic, but they do hold a 30-14 win over USC under their belts. Speaking of the Trojans - they come to Autzen in two weeks for a mega-showdown.

        Ducks flex their muscles
Stewart carries Oregon past Washington, into showdown with USC

SEATTLE, WA - Most coaches would be pretty happy after a game that featured his team putting 52 points and 674 yards of offense on the board.

        Not Mike Bellotti.

"We've got to fix things, defensively," the Ducks coach said after Oregon's 52-35 win over rival Washington. "We can't realistically expect to put up these kind of numbers offensively against a team like USC. We can win a shootout with any team, but we can't expect a shootout against that team."

This was a game that the Ducks had been dreading - one where the defense didn't bail themselves out by forcing turnovers. Patrick Chung did intercept his 6th pass of the year, but other than that the Huskies marched up and down the field at will, thanks to Jake Locker's athleticism and Louis Rankin slashing and gashing through the lines.

On the other side of the ball, it was a mixed bag. Jonathan Stewart carried the ball a career high 34 times for 197 yards and a pair of touchdowns, but he also uncharactertistically coughed the ball up twice, both times in the redzone. Still though, the Ducks took the Washington crowd out of the game with their power running attack. Dennis Dixon completed only 12 passes on the day, but still went for 304 yards and 4 touchdowns. Dixon added 108 yards on the ground, his 3rd 100-yard game of the season.

USC lost early on to Washington, but a win over Oregon next week would put them back in the driver's seat for the Rose Bowl and the Pac-10 title. The Ducks are determined to prevent that from happening.

                  Clutch Ducks
With the cool hand of a Heisman favorite, Dennis Dixon leads Oregon past USC

EUGENE, OR - To win the Heisman Trophy, you have to fill up stat sheets and box scores, come up big against quality competition, play for a nationally prominent team, and have that one defining moment.

Dennis Dixon may have had his on Saturday.

After USC pounded the ball into the endzone with 79 seconds remaining to take a precarious 35-34 lead, Dixon didn't panic. He just strapped on his helmet and started warming up. He watched USC's kickoff sail through the back of the Autzen endzone.

And then he completed a 19 yard pass to Ed Dickson. His next two throws were errant, leaving the Ducks in 3rd and 10 against a USC pass rush that had been getting closer and closer all day.

On 3rd and 10, Dixon bolted for the corner. Brian Cushing cut him off and drove him out inches short of the first down. Mike Bellotti faced a tough choice. Jonathan Stewart and Dixon had both gone for 100 against the Trojans, but could you really risk a run against this front seven with 4th down and the game on the line?

They didn't. Instead, Dixon hit Jaison Williams for 15 yards. Then he hit Cameron Colvin - who had just returned after being injured in the 2nd quarter - for 15 more. Then Jonathan Stewart plowed ahead on a draw play for 10. And as time expired, Matt Evensen's 29 yard field goal sailed through the rainy sky and right through the uprights, giving the Ducks a 37-35 win, and the inside track to the Pac-10 title.

It takes 3 OTs, but Oregon wins battle of Pac-10 unbeatens

EUGENE, OR - After back to back wins over quality Pac-10 foes, the question can now be asked.

Is Oregon a legitimate National Championship contender?

The Ducks passed their latest test - barely. They held leads of 17-3, 24-10, 31-17 and 38-31, but Arizona State had an answer every time, and Ryan Torain's 4th touchdown of the game with 51 seconds left sent the game into overtime. The teams traded touchdowns in the first two overtimes, and the Ducks took a 58-52 lead in the 3rd frame on Dennis Dixon's 3rd touchdown pass of the day. The mandatory 2-point conversion attempt failed, but the Ducks' defense finally made a stand, as A.J. Tuitele's blitz forced Rudy Carpenter into a poor throw on 4th down, preserving the Ducks' dramatic victory.

"We're starting to believe. We've got to stay focused, but we know what we're capable of now," Ducks RB Jonathan Stewart said afterward. Stewart had a career game, rushing for 209 yards and 4 touchdowns of his own on just 26 carries. Dixon was equally brilliant, completing a dazzling 78% of his passes (18-23) for 246 yards and 3 touchdowns, along with 68 yards rushing and another score. He didn't turn the ball over.

The Ducks have three games to go, and things could get tricky. They're in the desert next week to face Arizona, before a colossal matchup with undefeated UCLA in the Rose Bowl.
